Young Frankenstein

FAQ

Fox/Disney has such an extensive library that they may not get around to it until a special anniversary.

No one has answered this question yet.

It was an homage to the 1931 film Frankenstein.

Respected American neurosurgeon and scientist Dr Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder), grandson of the infamous Dr Victor Frankenstein, inherits his grandather's castle in Transylvania. At first steadfastly refusing to follow in his grandfather's "doodoo", he changes his mind when he finds the record of Victor's research. Aided by hunchback Igor (Marty Feldman), lab assistant Inga (Teri Garr), and housekeeper Frau Blücher (Cloris Leachman) (neigh!), Frederick becomes determined to reanimate a dead body (Peter Boyle). Let the fun begin!

British novelist Mary Shelley (1797-1851) created the characters in her Gothic novel Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus (1818), but Young Frankenstein was based on a screenplay written by American director Mel Brooks and principal actor Gene Wilder.

Victor Frankenstein is the name given to the doctor by Mary Shelley, the author of the novel. The names of Victor and his best friend Henry were switched for the stage play that preceded the Whale/Karloff film, and a lot of the play carried over to the movie. In Young Frankenstein, they have returned to the character's name as Shelley originally wrote it.

The Monster kidnaps Elizabeth (Madeline Kahn) and ravishes her, so much to her enjoyment that she falls in love with him. Frederick lures the Monster back to the castle by playing the violin and then tranfers some of his intellect into the creature. When the villagers, led by Inspector Kemp (Kenneth Mars), finally find him, the Monster has become a learned man with educated speech. In the end, Frederick marries Inga, and Elizabeth marries the monster. Inga joyfully learns that, in return for transferring his intelligence into the Monster, Frederick got the Monster's Schwanzstücker.
