The Longest Yard

Netflix is removing all of these movies tomorrow
Image
Netflix is on the cusp of taking down a wide selection of movies and TV series.

The streaming service removes numerous titles each month, but without fanfare; unless you happen to select the thing that’s about to leave, you will have no idea there’s a limited amount of time left to watch.

Fortunately, we’ve compiled a list of every movie and TV show being removed from Netflix in April 2023.

We’ve aggregated all the impending removals from Netflix in the UK and US, which we’ve signalled below. If there isn’t a territory listed next to the title, then it will be leaving both.

Find a full list of every film and TV show arriving on Netflix this month here.

Nb: We put this list together with help from What’s on Netflix.

Danny Dyer speaks out about ‘classist’ criticism of naming daughter Dani after him
Image
Danny Dyer has spoken out about facing classist bias throughout his time as a public figure.

The actor, who left his role on EastEnders at the end of 2022, referred to people mocking his choice to name his daughter, former Love Island star Dani Dyer, after him.

In the interview with The Times, the example of Nigella Lawson’s name being derived from her father, baron and former Tory politician Nigel Lawson, was raised as a similar choice that has not drawn as much critique.

When asked whether the difference in how people perceive this tribute is an example of class bias, Dyer agreed, replying: “I think there is classism.

“As soon as I open my mouth I’m judged as thick and poor and not articulate. I noticed that early doors, but it hasn’t really bothered me.”

Dyer grew up on a council estate in east London’s Custom House neighbourhood.

Rotterdam 2023 Review: One Win Is Exactly What You Predict It Is
Image
An underdog sports team of ragtag losers needs to play an incredibly important game and against all odds manages to put up a decent fight, And on top of that the journey solves the personal problems of several team members. Sound familiar? It should, because there are literally dozens of such films about. Feel free to find an older example than 1976's The Bad News Bears or, a bit more adult, 1974's The Mean Machine, but let's all agree that the formula is at least almost half a century old. Korean director Shin Yeon-shick has now made his own entry in this genre with One Win, and it had its world première at this year's International Film Festival Rotterdam. In One Win we follow volleyball...

Asian World Fest to Screen Oscar, Golden Globe Foreign-Language Entries
Image
This year’s Asian World Film Festival will again showcase the very best of Asian cinema, all in an effort to draw greater recognition to the region’s wealth of filmmakers and talent while strengthening ties between the film industries of Hollywood and the continent.

During the pandemic, the 2020 edition was delayed to spring 2021. The festival will highlight pictures from more than 50 countries across Asia. It is unique in that it predominantly screens works that have been submitted to the Oscars and Golden Globes for international feature film and motion picture — non-English language, respectively.

“We started Awff in 2018, and we’re very proud of what we’ve achieved,” says executive and program director Georges Chamchoum, who co-founded the event with Sadyk Sher Niyaz, the former minister of culture of Kyrgyzstan, and Asel Sherniyazova and Brett Syson. “It’s a real passion for me, and our goal is to put a...

Paper Girls (2022)
Paper Girls Season 2: What To Expect
Paper Girls (2022)
This Paper Girls article contains spoilers.

With the first season of Paper Girls currently airing, binge-watchers everywhere find themselves curious about where the story will go next if the series is renewed by Amazon for a second season. (Which feels more than likely given the buzz the show is generating). Seeing how the show diverges from the comics it was based on, much of what you are about to read is timey wimey speculation. That said, we’ve taken a look at both the source material and the seeds planted by the initial eight episodes to see what the future — or the past — will hold for Kj, Mac, Tiffany and Erin.

Tiffany and Erin Do The Time Warp Again

In the first season finale, Tiffany and Erin have escaped from the Old Watch’s time ship with the help of the (seemingly doomed) Prioress. They journey through a folding and land in Larry’s farm,...

James Hampton, ‘F Troop,’ ‘Longest Yard’ and ‘Teen Wolf’ Actor, Dies at 84
James Hampton in The Longest Yard (1974)
James Hampton, who played the bumbling bugler Hannibal Dobbs on F Troop, the prison inmate Caretaker in the original The Longest Yard and Michael J. Fox’s furry father in Teen Wolf, has died. He was 84.

Hampton died Wednesday at his home in Fort Worth, Texas, of complications from Parkinson’s disease, a family spokesperson said.

Hampton was great pals with Burt Reynolds — the two first met on a 1963 episode of Gunsmoke — and they were castmates in The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing (1973), The Longest Yard (1974), W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings (1975) and Hustle (1975). Plus, he wrote and/or directed several episodes of Reynolds’ CBS sitcom, Evening Shade.

The Longest Yard
Along with Roger Corman, Robert Aldrich seems to be the director most represented on Trailers from Hell. This prison-set anti-authoritarian football movie has similarities to The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. Burt Reynolds, who also appeared in the 2005 Adam Sandler (!) remake, plays a violent anti-hero who makes us root for him against the corrupt establishment anyway, but Sandler in the remake is pretty much of a wimp. Remade in England as Mean Machine in 2001.

Burt Reynolds (1936-2018) And Deliverance
This past week Burt Reynolds, perhaps the most self-deprecating movie star to ever cruise to box-office domination, died during a hospital stay in Jupiter, Florida, at the age of 82. “I’m pretty passionate about my work,” he once said, “even though I sometimes have this realization on the second day of shooting that I’m doing a piece of shit. So, I can do one of two things: I can just take the money, or I can try to be passionate. But the name of the boat is still the Titanic.” Yes, on top of being effortlessly likable and undeniably sexy, Reynolds was naturally funny too. And yes, there are a lot of confirmed pieces of shit floating around out there in which he received top billing. But even if the bad ones in his oeuvre outnumber the good ones (and I would argue that this is indeed the case...

Film News: Burt Reynolds, The Movie Star King, Dies at 82
Jupiter, Fla – When I met Burt Reynolds in 2011, I knew I was meeting Hollywood royalty… he filled the room as a Movie Star King. He was frail at that time, complaining of the injuries he endured in the over 90 films in his career, but nothing stopped his stardom until it was over. Reynolds died on September 6th, 2018. He was 82.

Burt was age 75 at our meeting, and he still had that the charm bearing that audiences adored in his heyday in the 1970s and early ‘80s, when he was the King of the Box Office. He started in 1950s TV, bounced around in that and B-movies in the ‘60s, and found his niche as a humor-motivated “good old boy” in a series of films in the ‘70s, culminating with “Smokey and the Bandit” in 1977, his most memorable hit. But even in his later years, he broke ground with “Boogie Nights,” and worked up to the end…...

Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway in Chinatown (1974)
Why 1974 was the best year in film history
Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway in Chinatown (1974)
All week long our writers will debate: Which was the greatest film year of the past half century.  Click here for a complete list of our essays. I was one of the first to select years for this particular exercise, which probably allowed me to select the correct year. The answer is, of course, 1974 and all other answers are wrong. No matter what your criteria happens to be, 1974 is going to come out on top. Again, this is not ambiguous or open to debate. We have to start, of course, with the best of the best. "Chinatown" is one of the greatest movies ever made. You can't structure a thriller better than Robert Towne and Roman Polanski do, nor shoot a Los Angeles movie better than John Alonzo has done. Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway give the best performances of their careers, which is no small achievement. If you ask...

The Deep comes to an end, Burn Notice season 3 starts in the UK, The Bill finishes for good and there are some cracking movies too...

We start our lead into the bank holiday weekend with news of a series start-up for a show we watch week on week, but haven't covered much in these pages. Burn Notice launches into its third season on these shores on Wednesday, September 1st with Friends And Family on FX at 10:00pm.

Paramount Scores 'Longest Yard' Remake
Burt Reynolds, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Bill Goldberg, Terry Crews, Nelly, Lobo Sebastian, Nicholas Turturro, Bob Sapp, Michael Irvin, and Dalip Singh in The Longest Yard (2005)
The remakes continue to come fast and strong, as Variety reports that Paramount has decided to redo its 1974 comedy The Longest Yard for Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions. The update is expected to include more contemporary elements, and if Paramount partners with MTV Films, may feature a number of urban music stars. While Sandler's company will produce, he's not expected to star in the film.

Vinnie Jones in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)

Vinnie, who's acting as adviser on the film, enthuses, "The tackles are pretty damn good. There is no moody (fake) stuff in it, what you see is proper football."...
