Happy Tuesday, dear readers! We have an eclectic home media release day today that features some truly great genre films from both the past and the present. One of my favorite movies of 2022 is Robert Eggers’ The Northman, and Universal is releasing the film on a variety of formats today. Ahead of the new season’s debut later this month, CBS Studios is bringing Evil: Season Two to DVD, and Lee Haven Jones’ The Feast is headed to both Blu-ray and DVD today, too. Synapse is showing some love to The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue with their brand new Special Edition Blu, and if you’re a Shaw Brothers fan, you’ll definitely want to pick up the Blu for Human Lanterns.
Other home media releases for June 7th include Dario Argento’s The Phantom of the Opera adaptation, Gore in Venice, Beyond Evil, House Squatch, Poltergeist 3-Film Collection,...

Hello again, dear readers! We’re back with our weekly horror and sci-fi home media releases rundown, and tomorrow’s assortment of titles is an interesting bunch, to say the least. Blue Underground is showing some love to Lucio Fulci’s Manhattan Baby this Tuesday, and Scream Factory has put together a Special Edition Blu-ray for Night Creatures as well. And if you’re looking to catch up on some recent horror, V/H/S/94, Richard Bates Jr.’s King Knight, Bleed With Me, and The Exorcism of God are all being released this week as well.
Other titles headed home on April 19th include Alive, Snuff Tapes, and Ghosts of the Ozarks.
Alive
From director Ryuhei Kitamura For the brutal revenge killing of his girlfriend’s rapists, Tenshu is sentenced to die in the electric chair. Resigned to his fate and unremorseful for his crime, he amazingly survives his high voltage execution!

Ad Nauseam: Newsprint Nightmares from the ’70s and ’80s
1984 Publishing, October 5, 2021
Michael Gingold (Author), Joe Dante (Foreword)
Ballyhoo, the art of selling the public something they don’t want, has never changed—but like the devil it has assumed many disguises. In the 19th century small towns were inundated with colorful broadsides, barn-sized murals promoting the arrival of the circus or a traveling vaudeville show. The 20th century made do with the daily newspaper’s theater section—all in black and white but jam-packed with exciting possibilities. Today we have Twitter and your neighbor’s cousin’s friend on Facebook. That’s not exactly progress.
The movie advertisements of a not-too-distant yesterday were called ad mats. They permeated the entertainment sections of the dailies, crammed together side by side like post-war housing developments. They were in close competition for our undivided attention so the artwork was designed to attract—and shock—the most jaundiced soul.

When “Night of the Living Dead” arrived in theaters in 1968, it not only revolutionized the genre as a whole but also set in motion a series of changes to the zombie subgenre, by changing the misconception of the creatures overnight. What had, until that point, been a genre dominated by the concept of the zombie as a brainless, emotionless slave under the control of a malevolent individual to do their evil bidding, the new presentation of zombies as flesh-eating ghouls ready to rip apart others became one of the more prominent takeaways from the movie into the new series of films inspired from “Night of the Living Dead.” One of the first titles to take influence from “Night,” the Spanish film “The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue,” serves as such direct inspiration for South Korea’s first zombie film in Kang Beom-gu’s “Strange Dead Bodies”.

Filmmaking is incredibly hard work, said everybody who's ever made one for our enjoyment. It’s especially a trial by fire for inexperienced movie magicians, hoping that the wand will strike at least once or twice and that they just survive. With his reputation as a BTS guru with Blue Underground and Dark Sky Films in full swing, Severin Films’ David Gregory set out to make his feature debut, Plague Town (2008)—a tense homage to classic British and foreign horror infused with a fresh feel for the present. And now, a Blu from Severin that houses not only a surprisingly effective chiller, but also behind-the-scenes features that painstakingly showcase a vision dragged kicking and screaming all the way to the screening room.
It is odd for me to be discussing a film this recent. However, it makes perfect sense in context to the creators; Gregory and his co-writer John Cregan...

Legendary filmmaker George A. Romero may have left this plane of existence in 2017, but his legacy — the post-apocalyptic zombie movie genre that he created — lives on. According to the THR, Romero was working before his death on Twilight of the Dead, a film that would have been his final statement on the subject and the last installment in the series that included the groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1979), Day of the Dead (1985), and others.
Now Romero’s widow Suzanne, who has been developing the script that her late husband started with three other writers, is ready to meet with directors for the project. Details on the plot remain secret, except for this tantalizing line: “The story is set in a decimated world. Life has all but disappeared. But there still may be hope for humanity.” Romero reportedly wanted to explore what came next after the...

I love it when a director you clocked onto a little while back as someone with potential, someone that you should be keeping an eye on, not only drops his latest film but has taken a complete left turn genre-wise, turning his hand to romantic comedy, and smashed it out the park. The director in question is Fredi ‘Kruga’ Nwaka and last time out he brought us The Living Dead which did pretty well on the festival circuit and I personally sung its praises as a low-budget Brit horror comedy that was daring to dream.
When I saw Nwaka was moving down a more romantic road I wasn’t sure what to expect from him, or the finished film, if I’m honest. All too often...

Before George A. Romero passed away in 2017, the legendary filmmaker was working on a novel — his first — called The Living Dead.
Conceived as an epic reboot/reinvention of the zombie horror genre he defined with his landmark 1968 film Night of the Living Dead, the book was set to encompass the entire world of Romero’s six Dead movies — including classics like Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead — while giving him the kind of free creative reign he never quite enjoyed with his films.
But we sadly lost Romero at the age of 77 three years ago, and The Living Dead — which he had been writing on and off for several years — was left uncompleted. Enter novelist Daniel Kraus (who co-wrote The Shape of Water with Guillermo del Toro), who with the encouragement and assistance of Romero’s widow Suzanne Desrocher-Romero and his agent, Chris Roe, took on the...

George A. Romero figuratively wrote the book on zombies with his low-budget, independent 1968 horror film epoch Night of the Living Dead. World War Z, 28 Days Later, Zombieland and even The Walking Dead trudged that territory but didn’t map much new terrain. Romero’s final novel, The Living Dead, completed by author Daniel Kraus (The Shape of Water novelization), doesn’t expand on the basics of the zombie apocalypse. It doesn’t challenge the zombie trope Romero filled out with his subsequent works on animated corpses, when The Living Dead had their Day, Dawn, Land, Diary and Survival. But, with it, Romero and Kraus do peer deeper into the mirror to find a bitter reflection of the horrors Romero brings out in The Living.

“The Living Dead” by George A. Romero and Daniel Kraus is an all-new epic story from the horror master, continuing his roots going back to “Night of the Living Dead,” but taking it in all new directions. Romero did not complete the story before his death, so his widow, Suzanne Desrocher-Romero, asked frequent Guillermo del Toro collaborator and lifelong Romero fan Kraus to help finish complete the book.
In this passage below, we meet a survivor named Greer Morgan 15 years after the rise of zombies that almost wiped out all of humanity. We also get a taste of what the world has now become and what Greer does daily to protect herself and keep on going.
Readers interested in “The Living Dead” can learn more about the book by watching Kraus and Desrocher-Romero discuss the project and Romero’s legacy during their Comic-Con@Home Panel. Their panel will launch on YouTube at 8 p.

With its revolutionary mix of shocking-for-its-time violence and sociopolitical themes, George A. When it comes to releasing unique and collectible Blu-ray box sets (such as their Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection), Severin Films has done an amazing job preserving horror history, and this summer they'll continue to do so with The Complete Lenzi Baker Giallo Collection, featuring Umberto Lenzi's collaborations with Carroll Baker:
"On June 30th, Severin Films is bringing together the complete collaborative works of two cult film legends with The Complete Lenzi Baker Giallo Collection, which includes superlative editions of Orgasmo, So Sweet… So Perverse, A Quiet Place To Kill, and Knife Of Ice.
Italian writer/director Umberto Lenzi helmed popular peplums, created extreme poliziotteschi, and invented the Italian cannibal phenomenon. Hollywood actress Carroll Baker was the Golden Globe® winning/Academy Award® nominated star of Baby Doll, Giant and The Carpetbaggers. Together in the late ‘60s/early ‘70s, they made four landmark films that changed the erotic thriller and giallo genres forever.

From his zombie trilogies to Creepshow and The Crazies, George A. Romero gave horror fans cinematic gifts that will surpass our lifetimes and live on to chill, thrill, and inspire future generations. But there's one gift from Romero that was left unfinished. When he passed away in 2017, George A. Romero was working on a new zombie novel that Daniel Kraus (co-author of Trollhunters with Guillermo del Toro) stepped in to finish following his death. Titled The Living Dead and comprised of more than 650 pages, the new novel was slated to come out in June from Tor Books, and now we've been informed that we'll have to wait just a bit longer to read the latest anticipated entry to Romero's living dead legacy.
Romero and Kraus' The Living Dead will now come out in hardcover and digital format on August 4th, 2020 from Tor. This means we'll have to wait a little...

The living dead launching out of their graves, zombie frogs getting revenge on the science teacher, and one epic cover of Pat Benatar's "Shadows of the Night"—these are only a few of the countless elements I love about Dance of the Dead, a midnight movie masterpiece that pits a diverse group of high schoolers and their surly gym teacher against a horde of the living dead at the prom. Directed by Gregg Bishop and written by Joe Ballarini, Dance of the Dead celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2018, and while speaking with him about his new book earlier this year, I had the great pleasure of also talking with Ballarini about writing Dance of the Dead and how the cult zombie movie changed from its initial conception to its final version on the big screen.

Psychomania tells of a group of n’er-do-well teens, led by a rich and mean-spirited young man, who skip school, ride motorcycles, and cause trouble and general panic wherever they go. They dub themselves The Living Dead and enjoy causing death and chaos at nearly every turn. However, if things seem bad in the little English village in which they reside, they take a decided turn for the worse when Tom Latham (Nicky Henson) discovers his psychic mother and the mysterious butler Shadwell (George Sanders) harbor a shocking secret—the key to life after death.
It seems that Mrs. Latham (Beryl Reid) and her husband made a long-ago deal with the devil for immortality. The couple committed suicide only to come back from the dead. Unfortunately, the late Mr. Latham found out he wasn’t a true believer and never made it back across. But Mrs.
