The Company of Wolves (1984)
The Company of Wolves is an homage to Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. In both films, a young girl experiences a loosely connected series of beautiful and perilous dreams inspired by her first menstruation, set in and around her European village and filled with erotic symbolism, predatory folkloric monsters, a shapeshifting Granny, and images of fruit, herbs, flowers, fountains, coffins, weddings, tears, trees, and blood.Rusalka (TV Movie 1986)
The 1986 ENO production of the fairytale opera "Rusalka" has heavy similarities to "Valerie", featuring a teenage girl descending into a dream fantasy world which illuminates her fears of adulthood. Rusalka also features 19th century influences and white and black costumes, similar to those in "Valerie"Big Fish (2003)
Tim Burton was inspired by ending of Valerie and used the same carnivale-like crowd meeting.
