Planet of the Apes

Adult Swim Almost Made A TV Show Based On DC's Most Underrated Characters
Image
Few comic book readers might know about Jack Kirby's "Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth." The "Kamandi" property was created by Kirby (the comic book legend behind "Eternals") in 1972 and fell in line with the then-rising trend of post-apocalyptic stories like "Planet of the Apes," "I Am Legend," and the 1978 film version of "The Time Machine." The apocalypse was looming large, and pop culture tapped eagerly into those impulses to imagine distant sci-fi worlds where anything could happen.

Kirby's entrance into this genre fast-forwarded to a point in the far-flung future after Earth had been devastated by an unknown cataclysm. The planet has since been renamed Earth A.D. (After Disaster), and most of humanity had devolved into violent savagery. Some people were keeping civilization alive in underground bunkers, although they had to hide from multiple new species of anthropomorphic animal monsters. Indeed, animals had rapidly evolved thanks to...

Tim Burton's Divisive 2005 Remake Has Aged Badly, According To Actual Science
Image
Though most of Tim Burton's films are beloved classics, his 2005 remake has aged poorly and there is hard data to back up that claim. Burton became a household name in the late '80s and early '90s with films like Batman, Edward Scissorhands, and Beetlejuice, and it was his distinct style that set him apart from other Hollywood filmmakers. Burton's use of quirky visuals and unique writing was unrivaled for the first few decades of his career, and he could always be counted on to deliver something truly one-of-a-kind, even if he was just producing the project.

However, Burton's star started to fall in the 2000s, and the auteur director began helming film after film that failed to match the classics of his early years. Instead of creating new and original ideas, Burton began renting himself out to direct remakes like Planet of the Apes, and franchise films like Alice in Wonderland,...

Doug Liman at an event for Great Directors (2009)
At the Movies in the Noughties, a show about the cinema of the 2000s, is the latest addition to the Film Stories Podcast Network.

Get your aviator sunglasses out because there’s a brand new show to announce on the Film Stories Podcast Network… At the Movies in the Noughties.

A spin-off/sister podcast to At the Movies in the 90s, which has been running since 2023 and now has 55 episodes under the belt, Noughties will have a very similar style and premise under Devon Elson, one of the regular minds behind kitsch horror podcast ChuckyVision, itself having clocked over 100 episodes.

Elson is primed and ready to talk more than just killer dolls, as he explains: “My favourite part of writing retrospectives has always been placing a timeless, or timely, movie in the context of when it came out, so I jumped head-first into the 2000s. In my first two episodes...

For ‘Bonjour Tristesse’ Star Lily McInerny, the Dreams (Like Working with Chloë Sevigny) Just Keep Coming True
Image
Actress Lily McInerny knows it sounds a little weird coming from a rising actress of her caliber, but it’s true, she “wasn’t a very outgoing kid.” But even her early inclination to work behind the scenes couldn’t quite kick what was always stirring in her: she wanted to tell stories. Acting? That fit the bill.

As the Indie Spirit nominee told IndieWire during a recent interview, she always loved fantasy tales, and that love for magical escapism naturally led to an interest in the theater and beyond. Also of assistance: An overall McInerny clan affection for “The Simpsons” (the gateway for her sense of humor), plus her dad’s love of sci-fi and horror.

She even made her own little films as a youngster, and by age eight, she was acting in elementary school productions. At age 13, she got into New York City’s “Fame” high school,...

‘Salvable’ Review: A Welsh Boxer Battles the Odds in Well-Crafted but Familiar Drama With Shia Labeouf
Image
The past-prime fighter struggling to rise above his hard-knock background was a screen cliché even when it fueled unexpected smash “Rocky” almost half a century ago. Since then, the same premise has been dusted off for regular reuse, often with extra helpings of “gritty” to make it seem less formulaic. But even that approach can feel mired in the same-old. English music video directing team Bjorn Franklin and Johnny Marchetta (billed as “Franklin & Marchetta”) make an assured feature bow with “Salvable,” which has Toby Kebbell from the “Planet of the Apes” films as one such boxer in a Welsh coastal town, beset by problems in and out of the ring.

With Shia Labeouf and James Cosmo also on board, this downbeat tale has solid performances, an intriguing locale and accomplished visual presentation among its virtues. Nonetheless, Franklin’s script never quite transcends pedestrian familiarity, holding this watchable effort back from...

Wilson Cruz, Robinne Fanfair, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Blu del Barrio, Sonequa Martin-Green, David Ajala, and Mary Wiseman in Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Spotlight - Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s Holly Hunter will shine in the lead role
Wilson Cruz, Robinne Fanfair, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Blu del Barrio, Sonequa Martin-Green, David Ajala, and Mary Wiseman in Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Set in the 32nd century as a spin-off from Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will be a series departure from the usual Star Trek canon that follows the adventures of a Federation starship and its captain and crew rather than the faculty and young cadets of Earth’s Starfleet Academy. With Helen Hunt cast as the Academy's captain and chancellor, it will be the third time a Star Trek series is led by a female captain, following Kate Mulgrew's Captain Kathyrn Janeway of Star Trek: Voyager and Sonequa Martin-Green’s Captain Michael Burnham of Star Trek: Discovery.

Holly Hunter is the only Academy Award winner (The Piano) in an acting category to be cast as the lead in a prime-time Star Trek series. Of course, there have been several Oscar winners to be cast in supportive Star Trek series roles, who have won the golden statue, such...

‘Miami Vice’ Remake in the Works With ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Director Joseph Kosinski
Image
“Top Gun: Maverick” filmmaker Joseph Kosinski is set to direct a “Miami Vice” remake for Universal Pictures.

Dan Gilroy is adapting the screenplay. Though plot details haven’t been revealed, the movie is based the 1980s TV series, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover detectives in South Florida. The neon-hued show ran on NBC for five seasons from 1984-1989. A film version was first attempted in 2006, with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell leading the cast and Michael Mann (who produced the original series) behind the camera. Though it became a cult favorite over time, the “Miami Vice” movie flopped in its theatrical run, grossing $165 million against a reported $135 million budget.

Casting has yet to be announced. In addition to directing, Kosinski will produce through his company, Monolith. Dylan Clark, who worked with Kosinski on 2016’s post-apocalyptic action thriller “Oblivion” as well as the Matt Reeves-directed “Planet of the Apes” series,...

‘Miami Vice’ Movie in the Works With Joseph Kosinski Directing
Image
Joseph Kosinski is headed to Miami. The filmmaker behind the $1.49 billion hit Top Gun: Maverick is attached to direct a Miami Vice movie for Universal, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Nightcrawler filmmaker Dan Gilroy is penning the script, from an earlier draft by Top Gun: Maverick scribe Eric Warren Singer, who had to move on to commitments on Amazon MGM Studios’ Best of Enemies, starring Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper. The Batman producer Dylan Clark is producing through Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski producing through Monolith.

Miami Vice began life as the Anthony Yerkovich-created TV series starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as two undercover Miami police officers known for their love of pastel suits. (“The ambition of the show was to break the form of everything that had come before,” executive producer Michael Mann told THR last year of the series, which ran from 1984-90 on NBC.

The Secret Weapon Behind the VFX of ‘A Minecraft Movie’
Image
Those who are surprised by the runaway box office success of “A Minecraft Movie” would do well to remember what director Jared Hess and his screenwriters always understood: The universal appeal of exploring a fun, open world. Or, in this case, worlds. They were able to translate that appeal to film and give it a compelling focus. “A Minecraft Movie” leans into both the inventiveness of the games and the timeless urge to champion freedom vs. oppression.

In this latest iteration, that fight is against the villainous Malgosha (voiced by Rachel House and performed by mo-cap actor Allan Henry), the Piglin ruler of the Nether underworld, who was created specifically for the movie. However, Malgosha, like everything in the film, needed to convey the game’s iconic blocky aesthetic, or “A Minecraft Movie” would have fallen into pieces.

“The biggest challenge for all of us was to find that line between working with [live-action] photography,...

Rosanne Barr Responds to 'The Conners' Finale Years After Firing
Image
The Conners ended its run this week after seven impressive seasons and what can only be described as a start that grew out of a very controversial situation. What became a spinoff series of Rosanne originally hit ABC as a revival of the hit show, with comedian Roseanne Barr once again leading the Conner family. As quickly as the revival became a hit, Roseanne was abruptly canceled after Barr posted a tweet many perceived to be racist. The concept was retooled to then become The Conners and Roseanne was unceremoniously written out, something that she spoke out about in a blunt manner on more than one occasion. So, how does she feel now that The Conners is over? Despite initial hostility, her reaction to the series coming to an end is probably not one that many expected.

Per TMZ, Roseanne's son and rep, Jake Pentland, spoke about her feelings regarding...

Andy Serkis has delivered some of the best motion-capture performances with roles such as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings and Caesar in the Planet of the Apes franchise. However, Serkis delivered his best and most human performance in the Star Wars series, Andor.

Serkis had previously played one of the most divisive characters in the space opera saga when he appeared as Supreme Leader Snoke in the sequel trilogy. As a result, even Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy was skeptical about casting him in the series as a new character.

The Iconic Statue of Liberty Twist in the Original ‘Planet of the Apes’ Movie: Explained
Image
While there have been several iterations of the iconic Planet of the Apes, nothing has the pop cultural significance of the 1968 original. The sci-fi film did not just conform to the tropes of the genre, but also included political commentary, elements of horror, and an insane twist that still hits hard despite being one of the most recognized images in human history.

The iconic half-buried Statue of Liberty is a huge revelation in the movie and one hell of a way to end it. It reveals something that everyone obviously feared but never dared to think of, as it is too tragic and dark a scenario to think of. So, what exactly does the symbol of the Statue of Liberty mean?

Below them is the bleakly industrial setting of the film; it was filmed on location in Wales last year. Kebbell may not be recognized for some of his most famous roles, which include the tyrannical bonobo Koba in the Planet of the Apes films and King Kong in Kong: Skull Island; however, he has recently starred, sans CG ape accouterments,...

Speaking with Collider about Starfleet Academy, Giamatti revealed that his character revels in his evil deeds. "He takes great pleasure in being the villain. He likes it. And it's very much a part of his thing that he's all, 'Oh yeah, I'm the bad guy,'" he said. Not much is known about Giamatti's role in Starfleet Academy other than he is a recurring character with a dark past connected to one of the cadets.

The first season of Starfleet Academy recently entered post-production, and a second season is already in development. Giamatti went on to talk about how the series reminds him of more classic entries in the Star Trek franchise. "To my mind, it feels very,...

Tim Roth on Charlton Heston's Cameo in Tim Burton's 'Planet of the Apes'
Image
What is the role that first comes to mind when you think of Tim Roth? Is it the clumsy bellboy from Four Rooms? The wailing criminal who gets shot in Reservoir Dogs? Or is it the psychology wiz in Lie to Me? The excellent British actor has played a litany of noteworthy characters, but top among them is not likely to be his role in Tim Burton's remake of Planet of the Apes. Regardless, his performance as General Thade gave him the opportunity to appear on-screen with Charlton Heston, a truly bittersweet experience considering it featured the controversial actor in one of his last roles.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Roth was at the 15th edition of the Luxembourg City Film Festival this week, where he offered a masterclass and also presented his latest feature film, Poison, a romantic drama he co-stars with Trine Dyrholm. The actor, who rose to...

Wtf Happened to Big Fish?
Image
If you were alive and paying attention in the early 2000s, chances are you remember Tim Burton’s Big Fish. Or maybe you don’t. That’s kind of the problem. Here we are, over twenty years later, and Big Fish remains a cinematic anomaly—loved by those who saw it but often forgotten in broader conversations about Burton’s filmography. How did one of the director’s most ambitious, heartfelt, and visually stunning films fade into relative obscurity? And why does it deserve to be remembered as his second-best film, right behind Ed Wood? Let’s dive into this weird, wonderful, and sadly overlooked masterpiece to figure out just what the fuck happened to Big Fish.

Released in 2003, Big Fish hit theaters when Tim Burton’s career was at a crossroads. He was still riding high from his ‘90s dominance—where he cranked out Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, and...

10 Flawless Movie Plot Twists That Changed the Entire Film
Image
The power of a great movie is its ability to capture elements of humanity and imagination in a short period of time, connecting with the audience by crafting stories that are able to hold audiences' attention from beginning to end. One of the best ways that a film can capture an audience is with a twist, something that completely reshapes the narrative of the movie and leaves the audience to question everything that they saw before.

Whether a twist happens halfway through a movie, shifting the narrative and structure of the rest of the film, or at the end of the movie, recontextualizing everything that came before and drawing audiences to immediately want to watch the film again, these films are some of the ones that stick in the mind of audiences. Predator vs Spider-Man Is Already Shockingly Gory for Anything Starring Peter Parker
Image
Marvel's Spider-Man is one of Marvel's most wholesome, family-friendly superheroes... which makes it all the more surprising that his upcoming brawl with the Predator is going to be so gory. While Peter Parker has had darker moments, it's rare that Marvel saves its most disturbing stories for the friendly, neighborhood hero. However, in this case, Marvel is starting right out of the gate with Joker-level horror.

In a newly released preview from Marvel, Spider-Man swings through New York as a blackout spreads across the city. Two women sit trapped on the subway, spotting a face peering through the window - a face that it turns out has been sliced off by Spider-Man's Predator enemy, known as Skinner.

The moment echoes Joker's 2011 redesign, in which he cut his own face off and started wearing it as a mask. That kind of thing is expected in the dark recesses of Batman's Gotham,...

Robbie Williams Fun Facts: Get To Know The Singer & ‘Better Man’ Star
Image
Reading Time: 5 minutes

Robbie Williams is British pop royalty, and he was hoping to score a worldwide hit with his recent biopic Better Man.

Robbie’s movie may not have been a box office smash, but steadily drumming up global word of mouth, even from people who have never heard of Take That. While the film is a traditional biopic in that it tells the singer’s life story, it also comes with one very bizarre caveat.

Instead of an actor playing Robbie (or the man even playing himself), the singer is portrayed as a CGI anthropomorphic chimpanzee, making it seem more like a Planet of the Apes film rather than Walk the Line.

New Data Reveals Most Streamed Oscar Nominated Movies of 2025: Best Picture Winner Is Not Even in Top 10

The Academy determined the most worthy films of last year at the 97th Oscars on Sunday. However, the number of awards for these films doesn’t necessarily give us a full picture of the films’ popularity with the audience. New data reveals the most streamed Oscar-nominated films and fans would be surprised to learn that some of the big winners at the Oscars are absent from this list.

Anora was the leading winner of the Oscars night and won five awards, including four wins for director Sean Baker. Adrien Brody’s The Brutalist won three awards, while Emilia Pérez, Dune: Part Two, and Wicked won two awards each.

However, none of these top winners were the most streamed movies. In fact, some of the non-winners took the top spots on this list. Some of...

10 Best Movies Set In Arizona, Ranked
Image
Depending on who you ask, Arizona is known as The Grand Canyon State and The Copper State. But if you ask us, it should also be called The Grand Cinema State or The Celluloid State, based on its proud filmmaking history. Given its proximity to Hollywood and stunning scenery that stretches for miles in every direction, Arizona has been the filming location for westerns, science fiction films, and pretty much every genre under the desert sun. In fact, Old Tucson Studios is known as the "Hollywood In The Desert," and was the site of movies and TV shows like "The Bells of St. Mary's, "Rio Bravo," "Gunsmoke," "Little House on the Prairie," and "Three Amigos!"

You're probably thinking, "Wait a minute, wasn't 'Three Amigos!' set in Mexico, 'Rio Bravo' in Texas, 'Bells of St. Mary's in the inner city?" Yep, you're right on all counts. From "Planet of the Apes,...

What Does the ‘Planet of the Apes’ Franchise Have to Do to Win a VFX Oscar?
Image
The excellent work on “Dune: Part Two” claimed the VFX Oscar on Sunday, while also leaving a lingering question of why the movies in the rebooted “Planet of the Apes” franchise have also been consistently outstanding but are still overlooked come final voting for the category’s Academy Award.

Since Wes Ball’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opened last spring, it was widely considered an Oscar frontrunner among VFX practitioners, and its nomination was pretty much viewed as a no brainer. Then last month, the film, with work led by VFX supervisor Erik Winquist and Weta FX, won the top Visual Effects Society Award for outstanding VFX in a photoreal feature, besting titles including the Dune sequel (which did win three trophies that evening).

This isn’t the first time the Apes franchise has had this result. The Visual Effects Society additionally gave its most coveted prize...

The Next 'Planet of the Apes' Movie Shows We’re Still a Long Way From the Franchise’s Biggest Twist
Image
Few reboots have been as surprisingly successful as Planet of the Apes over the last decade, and fans have been eagerly waiting for when we might see the new series catch up with the old. Each film so far has taken us that much closer, especially with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes leaping forward a few centuries. However, in addition to the technology being far off, the ending shows us that humans are still a force to be reckoned with. The apes might be a long way from their utopia, but this is still a blessing for audiences, since it suggests we have plenty more stories to enjoy before the clock finally expires.

How Andy Serkis' cat helped inspire Gollum's voice in The Lord of the Rings
Image
One day, many years ago, actor Andy Serkis sat in his kitchen working on the voice for the character of Gollum in Peter Jackson's forthcoming adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings. It was then, unexpectedly, that he became inspired by the most unlikely creature imaginable: his cat, Dizz.

Dizz came into the kitchen and began retching up a fur ball. It was in this moment, as Dizz gagged and lurched forward, that a light bulb went off in Serkis' head. “I saw his spine kind of rippling and he started to go [retching sounds] and that is exactly where Gollum came from," Serkis told a crowd of spectators at Fan Expo San Francisco in 2024. “My entire career I owe to my cat," Serkis quipped. And we owe Dizz for one of the most iconic voices in the movies:

At the time, Serkis was only focused...

While he didn't reveal plot details regarding the sequel, he shared his excitement about the many ideas he has about expanding the franchise moving forward.

10 Actors Who Turned Down The Harry Potter Franchise
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Getting an invitation to Hogwarts is a Harry Potter fan's dream. The idea of playing Quidditch, riding a hippogriff, and practicing wand skills during a Defense Against the Dark Arts class sounds like a blast. Visions of such moments danced in the heads of readers for a few years until the series took to the big screen in the early 2000s, beginning with 2001's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." Just like the books, the films took off, creating a film franchise of massive proportions and launching the careers of Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. Of course, it was a prediction that many could have guessed based on literary success.

Despite the largely unnoticed recasting of one of the franchise's most hated characters, many of the characters and scenes are still beloved today. Established stars of the time,...

Wes Ball's continuation of the Planet of the Apes franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, earned an Academy Award nomination this year for Best Visual Effects, alongside other majorly talented nominees, for their innovative combination of CG and live-action.
