Garner wrote about this movie in his memoir: "I made this thing for the money and I'm lucky it didn't wreck my career."
Both Garner and Kennedy found Eva Renzi extremely difficult to work with. The actress, making her Hollywood debut, demanded extensive script changes, disliked the costumes created for her by Edith Head and called director Delbert Mann an "amateur". When her behavior worsened on her next film, Universal released her from her contract.
Eva Renzi was pretty much the only leading lady that James Garner couldn't find kind words for. In an interview from May 1994, Garner said "I was told I'd get MacLaine, but they got some girl that somebody at the studio liked, but she had done hardly any work at all. She was a nasty German bitch named Eva Renzi - we called her Eva Nazi."
