Charles Shyer, the director of Father of the Bride and Baby Boom, who formed a successful comedy film-making partnership with his then wife Nancy Meyers, has died aged 83. His family confirmed his death in a statement to Deadline, and his daughter, film-maker Hallie Meyers-Shyer, told the Hollywood Reporter he died in hospital in Los Angeles “after a brief illness”.

Shyer had a hand in a string of successful comedies made over four decades, often in conjunction with Meyers, whom he married in 1980. The son of studio executive Melville Shyer, he cut his teeth as a writer on the TV series The Odd Couple (starring Tony Randall and Jack Klugman), before breaking into movies with a writing credit on Smokey and the Bandit.

Everyone of a certain age remembers the kickoff of the Laverne & Shirley theme song, and today, we imagine Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams singing from the heavenly skies once again.

Cindy Williams died today at 75 after a brief illness.

Williams is best known for her work on Laverne & Shirley, but she had over 80 movie and TV roles during her career.

Her first credit was in 1970, but it was her role as Laurie in American Graffiti in 1973 that got people talking.

She starred opposite Ron Howard and would later be cast as Shirley Feeney on Happy Days, in which he had the starring role, which led to the spinoff Laverne & Shirley.

While she did have other movie roles, such as in The Conversation with Gene Hackman, Williams was a TV personality.

The CBS adaptation of the BBC’s hit comedy Ghosts is reportedly going to make its UK debut on the BBC.

Trade magazine Broadcast has claimed the BBC is currently finalising a deal for the broadcast rights to the CBS version of the show, which premiered in the US in October 2021, and has a second season due to begin airing there on the 29th of September.

The CBS remake would sit alongside the critically acclaimed UK original, from the team behind Horrible Histories, which is due to release its fourth series on the BBC on the 23rd of September.

Both shows share an identical premise: a young couple inherits a dilapidated mansion filled with the ghosts of the people who have died there throughout history. There’s a scene in the first episode of Hulu’s This Fool that lays out in efficient detail just what sort of dynamic we’re dealing with here. It’s morning in the Lopez household, and Julio (series co-creator Chris Estrada) is indulging in his morning coffee ritual: hand-ground beans, a gooseneck kettle, a Chemex. His cousin Luis (Frankie Quiñones), meanwhile, dumps a pile of instant coffee into a mug, shoves it into the microwave, and calls it a day.

Theirs is the sort of odd-couple relationship that’s been sustaining comedy since at least, well, The Odd Couple — and it’s one winning enough here to keep This Fool coasting on an even keel through the mean(ish) streets of South L.A.

It’s been an interesting experiment and at the heart of the films seems to be bizarre, symbiotic between Hardy’s Eddie Brock and the Venom (a parasitic alien entity), turning into a weird comic book take on the classic Gene Saks film “The Odd Couple,” something the trailer for the upcoming sequel, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” has hinted at getting bigger play in the second installment.

Moving from the networks to the more risk-taking Paramount+ brings more fun and experimentation to Evil season 2. Episode 7, “S Is for Silence,” takes its title seriously, but also humorously, as the series presents its first entry into the silent genre of visual storytelling. Half the team go off exploring the shadowy darkness of impressionists, the other explores silent comedies.

Not a word has been spoken within the walls of the monastery of St. Thomas in 130 years, reads a sign just inside the gate. The compound and structure were built around an apocalyptic demon, who was captured and is held in an ornate and sanctified crate oozing ectoplasmic residue. The team is met by Father Winston, who hands each of the team a vintage magic slate paper to communicate with, one from Star Trek, another from Casper the Friendly Ghost and the third of a classic Robin Hood.

Mark Harmon will be sharing the screen with his wife, Pam Dawber, in upcoming episodes.

EW.com reports that Dawber has booked a four-episode arc on NCIS Season 18.

She will play the role of Marcie Warren, a “seasoned investigative journalist who uses her savvy wit and down-to-earth people skills to aid in her tireless pursuit of truth.”

The news comes following an episode that found Harmon's Leroy Jethro Gibbs getting suspended from his job, possibly setting up his exit from the series.

In recent months, rumors have circulated that the series is set to wrap up after 18 seasons if a deal is not reached to bring Harmon back into the fold.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Harmon is reportedly ready to exit the series, but CBS reportedly doesn't want to continue the series without him.

The same report from THR claims that Harmon could return on a part-time basis to keep the show on the air.

Dawn Wells, who starred as “good girl” Mary Ann in popular 1960s sitcom “Gilligan’s Island,” died Wednesday of causes related to Covid-19 in Los Angeles. She was 82.

Pig-tailed and attired in her ubiquitous dungarees or gingham dress, which is on display at the Hollywood Museum, the Mary Ann character was the girl-next-door to Tina Louise’s suggestive evening dress-clad Ginger, who was often subjected to leering comments from the male stars they were shipwrecked with on a tropical island after becoming stranded during a “three-hour tour.”

Louise, the last remaining member of the crew, said in a statement, “I was sad to learn of Dawn’s passing, I will always remember her kindness to me. We shared in creating a cultural landmark that has continued to bring comfort and smiles to people during this difficult time. I hope that people will remember her the way that I do – always with a smile on her face.

Arthur P. Siccardi, a longtime Broadway production supervisor whose five-decade career included work on such notable original and revival stagings as Sweeney Todd, Whose Life is it Anyway?, Sunday in the Park with George, Gypsy, The Heidi Chronicles and Sunset Boulevard, to name a few, died December 23 of complications from pneumonia. He was 89.

His death was announced by his son Drew Siccardi.

Born in Englewood, NJ, and raised in Fort Lee, Siccardi began his professional life as a minor league baseball pitcher for the Johnson City Cardinals from 1951-53. An employment offer to work as a show carpenter on the original national tour of Gypsy led to what would be his life’s work.

Siccardi established Arthur Siccardi Theatrical Services in 1975 at the suggestion of Michael Bennett, and he’d go on to work with such notable directors as Mike Nichols, Jerome Robbins, Tommy Tune, Gower Champion, Trevor Nunn and Michael Blakemore.

Neil Simon's "The Prisoner of Second Avenue" was based on his own hit Broadway play that opened in 1971 and ran for two years. It starred Peter Falk and Lee Grant. The play resonated with audiences of the era even though it was an unusually dark piece for Simon, reflecting the social decay of New York City during this period. Those factors were still very much in evidence in films of the era when Simon rather reluctantly agreed to bring his play to the big screen in 1975. Matthew Perry started the weekend with a somewhat alarming tweet: “Three months in a hospital bed. Check.” The “Friends” star, who has never been especially prolific on Twitter but who nevertheless hadn’t posted since May, underwent emergency surgery last month and appears to be on the mend.

“Matthew Perry recently underwent surgery in a Los Angeles hospital to repair a gastrointestinal perforation,” reads a statement from his representatives. “He is grateful for the concern and asks for continued privacy as he heals.” His condition is commonly referred to by doctors as a ruptured bowel and results in acute pain, among other serious symptoms.

The actor has been a sitcom mainstay for decades, not only on “Friends” but “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” “Mr. Sunshine,” and “The Odd Couple.” His film work includes “17 Again,” “The Whole Nine Yards,” and the severely underrated romantic comedy “Fools Rush In.”

Carole Shelley, the Tony Award-winning actress who portrayed one of the Pigeon sisters in the stage, film and television versions of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple, has died. She was 79. Shelley passed away following a battle with cancer at her home in Manhattan on August 31.

The actress also was known for originating the role of Crage Hall headmistress Madame Morrible in the Broadway sensation "Wicked" in 2003.

Shelley won her Tony in 1979 for playing Mrs. Kendal, the gracious real-life English actress who befriends John Merrick, in the best play winner "The Elephant Man."

Chicago – Writer Neil Simon was an American treasure, and created humor that anchored his often neurotic characters into our consciousness. From his early days in 1950s TV (“Your Show of Shows”) to winning a 1990s Pulitzer Prize for “Lost in Yonkers,” he refined and produced “the laugh.” Simon died on August 26th, 2018, at age 91, in New York City.

Neil Simon was born in the Bronx on the 4th of July, and got his nickname “Doc” at DeWitt Clinton High School in NYC. After the Army Reserves and a little college, he partnered with his brother Danny in the 1950s to write radio scripts and eventually “Your Show of Shows.” His first play was “Come Blow Your Horn” in 1961, which established him in New York theater. While some directors learned their craft through thrift bare independent features, others came up through the TV divisions of studios; one such fellow, Steven Spielberg, would go on to have a fairly successful career with big screen projects. Before he would make that leap however, he started with episodic shows, and then onto TV films like Something Evil (1972), a fun ride that shows the kid knows his way around a camera. I’m glad things turned out okay for him.

Originally airing on January 21st as part of the CBS Friday Night Movies, Something Evil had the ABC Friday night juggernaut of The Odd Couple/Love, American Style to contend with, and posted Something Lesser in the ratings. Too bad, because even though Something Evil’s material, from the title on down, is paper thin, Spielberg whips up one hell of a wallpaper.

A mini version of The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon will air during the back stretch of NBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics.

“Good Time” filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie have chosen their next project, and it’s a bit of a doozy. The Queens-bred filmmaking duo will helm a remake of “48 Hours,” the 1982 crime comedy starring Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy, Josh Safdie confirmed to IndieWire. “The Carmichael Show” co-creator and star Jerrod Carmichael will co-write the script.

“48 Hours” was an early addition to the buddy cop genre, and an early big screen success for Murphy. The odd couple comedy tells the story of a cop (Nolte) and a convict (Murphy) who team up to catch a pair of cop-killers. The title refers to the fact that Murphy’s character, a former cop serving time for armed robbery, is released from prison for 48 hours in order to help solve the murders. The movie was originally directed by the illustrious Walter Hill (“The Warriors”), produced by Joel Silver, and starred James Remar and Annette O’Toole.

I am having something of a love/ hate relationship with this ‘event’, as I have detailed in previous reviews of it. It’s hard to not love any time multiple Doctors team up, rather like a cosmic The Odd Couple, but there are good ways and bad ways of doing it. Virtually all the previous years have had nice, tight storylines, consistent creative teams, and set beginnings and wrap ups. This year’s effort, The Lost Dimension, has been all over the place creatively and storytelling wise. While a couple of individual issues have managed to shine, more have not. After a 10-year hiatus, Laura Bell Bundy, a Tony-nominated actress, is back on stage (despite a broken toe from rehearsals), singing and dancing in the world premiere production of The Honeymooners. The musical, based on the 1950s CBS TV show, is playing at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey, through Oct. 29. In it, Bundy plays Trixie, a former burlesque dancer married to Ed Norton (Michael Mastro), who wants to get back into show business.

“Even though she loves her husband so much, it’s not enough for her to stay in the house and be a housewife. I think [writers Dusty Kay and Bill Nuss] felt that message resonated with women of 2017,” she tells Et, explaining that the character is not stuck in a time warp of the show’s 1950s conventions.

The 31-year-old actor told Et's Sophie Schillaci on Friday during a Facebook Live that he and his former Drake & Josh co-star are on good terms after the wedding drama.
