Cinematographer Jack N. Green is proof that nice guys sometimes finish first — even in Hollywood.
Born in 1939, the San Francisco native traveled a long-rising arc in his career, which includes distinguished stints shooting aerial sequences for documentaries and some of the most iconic films of the 1960s, eventually becoming director of photography on a run of Clint Eastwood movies and more recent comedies such as “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Hot Tub Time Machine” and two “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” movies.
Green’s parents, Trudy and John Sr., had a shared fascination for photography and rigged up a home darkroom that made a strong artistic impact on their son.
Graduating from high school and barber college at 17, Green planned to make that job his career. But all that changed when he was befriended by shop regular Joe Dieves, a former World War II combat cameraman. Enamored of Dieves’ stories, Green soon joined him,...

Hollywood's oldest working actress, Connie Sawyer, died at home after an incredibly long and prolific career. Connie reportedly passed away at her Woodland Hills home. Unclear exactly how, but she was 105 ... so presumably it's related to her age. The longtime actress got her start in Tinseltown at the age of 18, and has over 140 acting credits to her name -- most of which were TV roles. Sawyer's been on a number of hit shows over her six-decade career,...

Remarkably underused across Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man movies and truly magnetic in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, few actresses boast the rich and varied career of Sally Field, who first caught Hollywood’s eye during her screen debut in 1967’s The Way West. Fast forward to today and there is already a lot of early buzz surrounding Field’s next appearance, the title role in Hello, My Name is Doris.
Written and directed by Michael Showalter, the film follows Doris, a humble, softly-spoken widow who is shaken out of her isolation after crossing paths with John (New Girl‘s Max Greenfield), an attractive and much, much younger co-worker who catches her eye. And so, in an attempt to bridge the generation gap, Field’s protagonist begins to roll back the years, attending concerts and even creating a false Facebook account all in the hope of earning John’s admiration.

Kirk Douglas movies: The Theater of Larger Than Life Performances Kirk Douglas, a three-time Best Actor Academy Award nominee and one of the top Hollywood stars of the ’50s, is Turner Classic Movies’ "Summer Under the Stars" featured star today, August 30, 2013. Although an undeniably strong screen presence, no one could ever accuse Douglas of having been a subtle, believable actor. In fact, even if you were to place side by side all of the widescreen formats ever created, they couldn’t possibly be wide enough to contain his larger-than-life theatrical emoting. (Photo: Kirk Douglas ca. 1950.) Right now, TCM is showing Andrew V. McLaglen’s 1967 Western The Way West, a routine tale about settlers in the Old American Northwest that remains of interest solely due to its name cast. Besides Douglas, The Way West features Robert Mitchum, Richard Widmark, Lola Albright, and 21-year-old Sally Field in her The Flying Nun days.

Chicago – They don’t make ‘em like Robert Mitchum any more. Every few years, there’s a DVD collection of classic movies that rises above the others for the holiday season. One of this year’s most star-packed entries includes not only Mitchum but John Wayne, Deborah Kerr, Kirk Douglas, Shirley MacLaine, Richard Widmark, Gene Kelly, Paul Newman, Shelley Winters, Marilyn Monroe, and many more. Mitchum may be the face on the cover but the set is a trip through the golden era of Hollywood through more than just one star.

With a 10-dvd set, it can be difficult to sum up in one review. The quality of the films, the transfers, and the special features are wildly variable. “River of No Return” looks surprisingly good. “Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison” needs a better remastering (some of the darker scenes look horrendous). The Criterion Blu-ray edition of “Night of the...
