15 Actors Who Play The Same Character In Every Movie
Image
Everyone has a favorite movie star. Whether you grew up cheering on Harrison Ford as he kicked the crap out of legions of Stormtroopers or laughed when Tom Hanks danced on a massive piano, at some point or another, an actor from Tinseltown captured your attention and forced you into a theater to witness their latest big-screen escapade. Julia Roberts, Denzel Washington, Meg Ryan, and Arnold Schwarzenegger all took the world by storm in their heyday and used their incredible good looks and rock star charisma to entertain the masses, often pulling in hundreds of millions of dollars simply by having their name at the top of a poster.

Still, being a Hollywood icon occasionally has its drawbacks. Often, an actor will leap into the spotlight by playing a specific character and then get stuck playing that character for the rest of their career. Here are 15 examples of such an occurrence -- and no,...

James Caan movies: 12 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
On July 6, 2022, one of Hollywood's most iconic actors passed away at the age of 82.  Best remembered for his Oscar-nominated performance in "The Godfather" (1972), James Caan's career spanned almost 60 years of theatrical and television work.

Born in the Bronx on March 26, 1940, Caan made his TV debut on an episode of "Naked City" in 1961, and his film debut two years later in an uncredited role in Billy Wilder's "Irma la Douce." He soon made a name for himself co-starring alongside such Hollywood legends as Olivia de Havilland in "Lady in a Cage" (1964) and John Wayne and Robert Mitchum in "El Dorado."

In 1971, he earned his sole Primetime Emmy nomination for his title role in the tearjerker "Brian's Song," and the following year achieved an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, for his memorable turn in "The Godfather." This was the role with which he became most identified; however, over the next half century,...

This 73-Year-Old Western Starred John Wayne in His Prime
Image
When thinking of John Wayne, it’s nearly impossible not to picture him as the no-nonsense cowboy in the Western genre — the kind of guy who rides into town, guns blazing, ready to take on any challenge. However, in Howard Hawks’ 1948 masterpiece Red River, Wayne takes on a role that completely overturns that familiar image. Here, he’s Thomas Dunson, a brutal cattle baron whose descent into dictatorship is as unforgiving as the land he’s trying to conquer. It's a role that lets Wayne explore a darker side of masculinity and one that has more in common with a Shakespearean tragedy than a typical Western.

But Red River was far more than a stepping stone to Wayne’s future anti-heroic roles. It’s a film that redefines the Western, turning away from the usual tale of outlaws and gunslingers to focus on a large group of cattlemen making the...

Escape from L.A. (1996) Revisited – Sci-fi Action Movie Review
Image
The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, and Escape from New York. These are the holy trinity of John Carpenter/Kurt Russell collaborations and are generally seen as anything from best cult film of all time to the best horror movie of all time. The Thing would get a prequel movie but that was only after years of being unappreciated and it would take a re-evaluation for that movie to come to life. Big Trouble wouldn’t even get that as the IP would die at the box office and stay dead to the creators. While all 3 would share some form of a collection of video game tie-ins, comic books, toys, and board games, only Escape from New York would get the direct sequel treatment, and even that was 15 years later. While it is not usually held in the same regard as its oft-imitated predecessor, it’s slowly gaining traction...

John Wayne’s 'Rio Bravo' Inspired 'Assault on Precinct 13'
Image
John Wayne achieved major stardom with the 1939 Western film Stagecoach, which marked his first collaboration, as a leading man, with director John Ford, a relationship that reached its pinnacle with the 1956 Western film The Searchers, which is widely regarded as being the greatest and most influential Western film ever made. Ford and Wayne’s historic partnership has somewhat overshadowed another important directorial collaborator in Wayne’s career, Howard Hawks, who first directed Wayne in the classic 1948 Western film Red River. Following Red River, Ford and Wayne next collaborated on the 1959 Western film Rio Bravo, which, like The Searchers, is now regarded as being one of the greatest and most influential films, of any genre, in history.

Rio Bravo features one of Wayne’s greatest screen performances as John Chance, a small-town Texan sheriff who, after arresting the brother of a powerful local rancher for murder, has to hold the man...

Shakira Is a Belly Dancing Queen During Her First Grammys Performance in 18 Years
Image
Shakira brought her star power to the Grammy Awards for her first performance at the ceremony in 18 years. The Colombian star came out swinging with bold belly dancing moves — a signature of her decades-long career. The star literally glowed wearing a sparkling gold two-piece set, complete with gold decal stickers pasted on her stomach.

Shakira took the Grammys back in time as she launched into a sultry rendition of the classic”Ojos Asi” from her 1998 album Dónde Están los Ladrones? The stage then turned into a purple church with backup dancers in robes,...

‘Bandidos’ Season 2 Netflix Review: Treasure Hunting Series Suffers Sophomore Slump Due To Lili
Image
Stories about treasure hunting are awesome. Way before I was introduced to the world of movies, I was reading Treasure Island, Sinbad the Sailor, and the purposefully anticlimactic Sonar Kella. Then there were the Tintin comics and the amazing 2011 film, The Adventures of Tintin, that absolutely enthralled me. Mackenna’s Gold and King Solomon’s Mines were brought up in every conversation with my parents so many times that I have lost count at this point. Despite the tacky nature of the franchises, the Lara Croft and The Mummy movies were hugely influential. Animated feature films like Treasure Planet, The Road to El Dorado and Atlantis: The Lost Empire were on repeat in my household. Despite the problematic nature of its lead, there’s no denying the effect that the first 3 Pirates of the Caribbean films had on me. One Piece, the manga and the anime, is another great example. And even...

This Great 1945 War Movie Led To Robert Mitchum's Only Oscar Nomination, But He Deserved Another Two Years Later
Image
A great 1945 war movie called The Story of G.I. Joe led to Robert Mitchum's only Oscar nomination even though the celebrated actor deserved at least one more. Mitchum has starred in some of the best film noirs of all time, such as The Big Sleep (1978), Cape Fear (1962), and The Night of the Hunter (1955). Mitchum was so exceptional in his prime that Roger Ebert called him his favorite movie star. Despite his acclaim, Mitchum was only nominated for one Oscar in his career for 1945's The Story of G.I. Joe.

Mitchum's acting career left a legacy as a classic figure in both film noir movies and Westerns. He starred alongside John Wayne in the Western drama El Dorado (1966) and in the classic war film The Longest Day (1962). He first rose to prominence in 1944's Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo alongside Spencer Tracey and Van Johnson. Because of his overwhelming influence on...

John Wayne Wasn't A Fan Of His 1965 Western With Dean Martin
Image
John Wayne was quite public about his feelings towards his 1965 Western with Dean Martin titled The Sons Of Katie Elder. While not often considered among John Wayne's best movies, The Sons of Katie Elder earned a critic score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Wayne stars as John Elder, one of four brothers who reunite in their hometown of Texas for their mother's funeral. The film was shot entirely in Mexico but takes place in northeast Texas, east of Dallas.

Directed by Henry Hathaway, The Sons of Katie Elder was released in theaters in Panavision on June 24, 1965, and was distributed by Paramount Pictures. Wayne had just come off starring in Otto Preminger's In Harm's Way and George Stevens' The Greatest Storey Ever Told, which were both released in early 1965. Dean Martin, who was also a successful singer and comedian, was just coming off 1964's Kiss Me, Stupid and Robin and the 7 Hoods.

Skeleton Crew: Is Jod Na Nawood's True Identity Really as Obvious as It Seems?
Image
The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Episode 2, "Way, Way Out Past The Barrier," now streaming on Disney+.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is the latest story from the galaxy far, far away. The series, which follows a group of children who happen upon an abandoned pirate ship that takes them far from their homeworld, takes heavy cues from 1980s Amblin movies like The Goonies and E.T. However, despite its generally lighthearted tone, Skeleton Crew starts with a surprisingly dark scene as a merchant freighter is attacked and boarded by a vicious pirate crew. The captain of this crew suffers a mutiny, apparently setting the stage for the kids' adventure.

While Episode 1 of Skeleton Crew does not reveal the true identity of the masked pirate captain, who goes by the name of Captain Silvo, Episode 2 appears to reveal his face and fate. Skeleton Crew's second episode, "Way, Way Out Past The Barrier,...

However, the culprits work for one of the town's wealthiest men, Victor Bronson, who attempts to pay off Maddox. The Bannock marshal cannot be bought, inevitably leading to an epic showdown only the best Westerns can deliver.

Why John Wayne Said 1969's True Grit Was His "First Good Part In 20 Years"
Image
True Grit gave John Wayne his one and only Academy Award and, in his opinion, his role in the movie ended a 20-year career rut. John Wayne was arguably the greatest Western star of all time, and he had appeared in over 80 Western movies since his breakout role in 1939's Stagecoach. Stagecoach was one of the movies that defined John Wayne's career, and Wayne played the sharpshooting antihero, The Ringo Kid, who was on a revenge mission after being falsely accused of murder. Since then, Wayne usually played cowboys, soldiers, and other assorted heroes.

True Grit's Rooster Cogburn was an aging, drunk, grumpy old man and a break from type for John Wayne. True Grit follows Cogburn as he becomes a cantankerous father figure to the teenage girl who hires him to track down her father's murderer. True Grit has some of John Wayne's best Western movie scenes, showed...

"I Never Knew He Could Act": John Wayne's Dark Performance In The Western Red River Was So Good, Even John Ford Was Shocked Despite Making 4 Movies With Him Before It
Image
Howard Hawks' 1948 Western Red River finally convinced John Ford that John Wayne was a great actor, even though they had made four movies together already. John Wayne and John Ford made nine great Westerns together, and both the director and the actor became known as legends of the genre. Ford and Wayne were even responsible for some of the best Western movies of all time, like Stagecoach, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and The Searchers. Most of Ford's movies cast Wayne as a traditional, upstanding hero, but one of the first films that cast him against type surprised everyone.

Even though Wayne and Ford were an absolutely legendary pairing, Ford was still shocked by another movie Wayne made with a different director. Wayne's performance in Red River, directed by Howard Hawks, proved to Ford that the Duke was a great actor, even though their professional relationship was well under way by that point.

Devastating Outer Banks Season 4 Theory Completely Changes How You See The Entire Show
Image
Warning: The article contains spoilers for Outer Banks season 4, part 2

One shocking theory following the ending of Outer Banks season 4 has fans understanding the show in an entirely new light. While season 4 returns the Pogues to their home territory of North Carolina's Outer Banks for the majority of the season, the characters also find themselves hunting for treasure in Morocco while facing off against con-artist Chandler Groff. Outer Banks Season 4 dealt with several big revelations about the characters and their futures, including the news that Sarah and John B will have a child, as well as JJ's tragic death.

As in previous seasons, the Pogues' treasure hunt is narrated by John B who gives audiences additional information about the hardships and lessons that the group has encountered, and none have been more poignant than season 4's sad ending monologue. One new theory about Outer Banks alleges that this narration,which...

Robert Mitchum's 10 Best Western Movies, Ranked
Image
While he's best known for his work in film noir, Robert Mitchum starred in over 30 movies in the Western genre as well. Called the "soul of film noir" by Roger Ebert, Mitchum is famous for his iconic villain roles in the '50s and the '60s. His work in noir as the classic anti-hero laid the foundation for many of the famous modern antagonistic characters of the genre. However, Mitchum's superior range as an actor helped him smoothly transition from the suave and stylized villainous roles in film noir to more rough-around-the-edges and dramatized roles.

As is seen in Western flicks like El Dorado, which is one of the actor's most famous films ever, and The Tombstones, where Mitchum serves as a narrator off-screen. Mitchum appears beside John Wayne in El Dorado, the latter having replaced the former in an older film after Mitchum was fired from Blood Alley.

Paddington In Peru Ending Explained
Image
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Paddington in Peru.

Paddington in Peru ends the trilogy with a story filled with the same heart and laughs as its predecessors, with no shortage of big twists. Rather than being set in London, this time around, Paddington in Peru switches filming locations to, well, Peru, the lovable bear's home country. The story centers around the search for Paddington's Aunt Lucy, who goes missing from the Home for Retired Bears. By following what is considered one of the best movies of all time in Paddington 2, Paddington in Peru had a lot of pressure on its shoulders.

While maybe not reaching the heights of its predecessor, the story proves itself as a worthy one by the time of Paddington in Peru's ending. Not only does the film contain the same emotional and comedic core as the first two, but Paddington in Peru's story...

The Grammy nominations are out today, and for Latin music, it’s another year that sees language artists left out of most major categories. That’s a bummer because in 2023, it seemed briefly like the rides were turning when Bad Bunny’s massive LP Un Verano Sin Ti made history as the first Spanish-language album nominated for Album Of The Year.

Since then, though, most Latin artists have been relegated back to specific categories, like Best Latin Pop Album, Best Música Urbana Album, Best Latin Rock or Alternative, and Best Música Mexicana Album.

‘Outer Banks’ Co-Creators Talk Season 4’s Shocking Finale Death & New Villain, Address Season 5 Burning Questions: “We Bring Everything Home”
Image
Spoiler Alert: The series includes details about Season 4 Part 2 of Netflix’s Outer Banks.

For the second time in four seasons, an Outer Banks finale ends with the Pogues mourning one of their own. But while John B, along with Sarah, turned up a few weeks after being presumed dead in the Season 1 finale, the death was real this time as JJ (Rudy Pankow) passed away in Morocco surrounded by his friends in the final minutes of the Season 4 closer after he had been stabbed to death by his father.

On a show of high stakes where every member of the Pogue crew has found themselves in grave danger multiple times over the past four seasons, JJ’s killing was still a shocker that is sure to reverberate throughout Outer Banks‘ upcoming fifth and final season.

It was a culmination of a season that was focused on JJ who started...

Why Outer Banks Is Ending After Season 5
Image
Prior to the release of Outer Banks season 4, part 2, the shows creators and cast have confirmed that the popular teen drama will be coming to an end after season 5. Outer Banks became a massive hit following its Netflix premiere in the spring of 2020, following the treasure-hunting misadventures and class conflicts of a group of teens, nicknamed the Pogues, living in North Carolinas Outer Banks. Since that first hit season, Outer Banks main characters have gone on increasingly dangerous and high-stakes treasure hunts that often take them across the globe.

On November 4, 2024, Netflix confirmed that Outer Banks would be returning for a fifth and final season. Considering the consistent popularity of the show through Outer Banks season 4, part 1s ending in October 2024, the announcement that the series is coming to a close may come as a surprise. However, it seems that Outer Banks ending with season 5 is the best avenue for the teen Netflix drama,...

Who Is Blackbeard in ‘Outer Banks’?
Image
After three seasons of high-stakes treasure hunts — in search of $400 million, the Cross of Santo Domingo and, most recently, El Dorado — the Pogues finally strike gold at the end of Outer Banks Season 3. Once deemed troublemakers on Kildare Island, the friend group are now celebrated as hometown heroes for putting an end to a 500-year-old mystery and finding El Dorado, the lost city of gold.

But that doesn’t mean their treasure-hunting days are over. In the season finale, 18 months after completing the biggest quest of their lives, the Pogues are approached by an elderly man Wes Genrette (David Jensen) at the commemorative ceremony. The gentleman pulls out a manuscript belonging to the infamous pirate, Blackbeard. It’s a captain’s log with records of the exact locations Blackbeard’s ship sailed to up until 1718, when it was shipwrecked. It’s thought that all of Blackbeard’s precious gold is...

‘Paddington In Peru’ Review: Olivia Colman & Antonio Banderas Join Threequel As Continued Story Of The Little Bear Welcomed By Strangers Remains Magical
Image
Olivia Colman plays a singing nun. I’m almost prepared to say that’s all you need to know about Paddington in Peru: that Olivia Colman, living English treasure, gets her Julie Andrews on and leads a song-and-dance sequence on an alpine meadow that tells us that the hills are still very much alive. It’s not much of a spoiler to say that her Reverend Mother proves to be something less than exemplary in the deadly sins department, at least the ones that involve lying. That’s the best bit, in fact: the singing nun in the naughty corner.

Paddington in Peru is the third film to adapt Michael Bond’s iconic children’s stories. All of it is fine, actually, not just Colman’s homage to the Von Trapps. Directing duties have passed from Paul King to Dougal Wilson, who may not have King’s Midas touch with physical comedy,...

A John Wayne Western Roger Ebert Called Tired Lands on Prime Video
Image
Fans of John Wayne can now stream the actor's classic Western Rio Lobo, which was originally released in 1970. The film, which drew some ire from famed movie critic Roger Ebert, is now available to stream on Prime Video.

Rio Lobo was directed by Howard Hawks, and the screenplay was penned by Burton Wohl and Leigh Brackett. Wayne had previously collaborated with Hawks on 1959's Rio Bravo and 1966's El Dorado before Rio Lobo, which ultimately turned out to be the director's final film. In the film, Wayne plays a Union leader who vows revenge against the traitors who'd assisted Confederate forces in a deadly attack against his troops during the Civil War. Jorge Rivero, Jennifer O'Neill, Jack Elam, Victor French, and Susana Dosamantes also star.

John Wayne & Robert Mitchum Finally Teamed Up In 1966's El Dorado After Years Of Separately Dominating The Western Genre, And It Was Totally Worth The Wait
Image
John Wayne and Robert Mitchum were two of the biggest Western stars of their day, and their eventual team-up in El Dorado was worth the surprisingly long wait. There exists an unofficial Rio Bravo trilogy, with director Howard Hawks and leading man John Wayne making the same movie three times. Rio Bravo is the original and most acclaimed, where Wayne's Sheriff has only a drunken deputy and a cocky young gunfighter to rely on while defending his besieged jailhouse. The film is a classic, with both John Carpenter and Quentin Tarantino labeling it one of their favorites.

Rio Bravo was Wayne's retort to High Noon, with the star detesting the politics of that 1952 Western. Hawks and Wayne liked the basic premise of Rio Bravo so much that they remixed its characters and themes twice more with El Dorado and Rio Lobo. The latter proved to be Hawks' final film, and...

Outer Banks Season 4 Has A Concerning Sarah Cameron Problem To Fix After Part 1s Ending

Madelyn Cline reprises her role as Sarah Cameron in Outer Banks season 4, and while she's technically a main character in the first five episodes, part 2 must fix a glaring issue regarding Sarah's arc. Jason Statham's First Action Movie Was A Stealth Remake Of This 1959 John Wayne Classic
Image
Jason Statham's first action role was in Ghosts of Mars, which was itself a stealth remake of a John Wayne Western. Released in 2001, Ghosts of Mars marked the final John Carpenter movie for a decade, with the legendary filmmaker taking a long break after feeling burnt out with the industry. The film itself is a fusion of sci-fi, action and horror, with a dash of Western thrown into the pot. Ghosts of Mars was also one of a run of films set on Mars during this period, including Val Kilmer's Red Planet and Mission to Mars.

The movie feels like a mixtape of Carpenter's previous work; Ghosts of Mars takes the cop shop setting of Assault on Precinct 13, the paranoia of The Thing with a main character who feels very much like Kurt Russell's Snake Plissken. There was even a debunked rumor Ghosts of Mars was almost the third Escape From.

This article contains major Spoilers for Outer Banks season 4, part 1!Luke Maybank finally returns in Outer Banks season 4, with the truth about the whereabouts of JJs father making the teens story more tragic. Season 1 quickly established that Outer Banks' character JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow) came from a troubled home life, as his mother abandoned him years before the start of the show, while his abusive father blames him for her absence. JJs father, Luke Maybank (Gary Weeks), proves to be a poor parent for the teen, and often engages in criminal activity, which includes abandoning JJ while running from authorities in season 2.

Most of the Pogues parents are absent from season 4, with Sarahs father Ward and John Bs father Big John both dying in Outer Banks season 3s ending. However, JJs family life comes to play an important role in Blackbeards treasure hunt. In Outer Banks season 4, episode 5, JJ...

Outer Banks season 4 parents guide: Is it safe for kids and teens to watch?
Image
A new season of Outer Banks has arrived on Netflix… or at least part of it. For the first time, Netflix is releasing a new season of its hit drama in two parts with season 4’s first five episodes streaming now and the second five episodes of the season coming on Nov. 7.

Season 4 begins by catching us up on what the Pogues were up to after finding the gold at El Dorado and returning to the Obx before the 18-month time jump that occurred in the season 3 finale when the group was celebrated for their find and approached about finding Blackbeard’s treasure. If you thought the Pogues finding El Dorado would be enough to keep them out of the game for long, you’d be mistaken. It doesn’t take long for the group to once again embark on a new journey which will see them struggling to keep...

When the rest of Outer Banks season 4 releases on Netflix (it's very soon!)
Image
The good news? Outer Banks is back! The not-so-good news? It's a split season. If you're watching the latest season 4 episodes that dropped on Netflix on Oct. 10 and you're thinking, "Why are there only five episodes?!," that's why. The streaming service opted to break the new season of the hit teen adventure drama into two parts. But the wait isn't long at all!

While that's a bummer for binge-watchers who want the full story in one sitting, it's a win for those of us who want to savor our time with the Pogues a little bit more. This season, the group of adventurers expect to enjoy the sweet life with the fruits of their labor post-El Dorado. However, a stroke of unfortunate financial luck has them accepting an offer to hunt Blackbeard's treasure.

Once again, John B and company are out of their depth against intimidating opponents and in...

This Hollywood Actor Made 26 Movies With John Wayne
Image
Over the course of his long Hollywood career, the Hollywood actor appeared in a whopping total of 26 John Wayne movies. Between the 1920s and 1970s, legendary movie star John Wayne starred in well over 100 movies, the vast majority being either Westerns or war movies. Based on that, it's no surprise that he would wind up reuniting with some of his former co-stars in another project at some point or another. However, there were some actors in Hollywood that became recurring co-stars and collaborators of Wayne's.

Easily the most high-profile of Wayne's partners in making movies were John Ford and Maureen O'Hara. A celebrated Western icon in his own right, Ford directed several of John Wayne's movies, including Stagecoach, The Quiet Man, and Rio Grande. As for Maureen O'Hara, she was the female lead in five John Wayne movies, each being a standout entry in the actor's filmography. But neither was...

What Time Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1 Releases On Netflix
Image
Following a year and a half wait, Outer Banks season 4 part 1 is finally hitting Netflix on October 10, 2024. The hit teen drama brings back John B and the Pogues for yet another treasure hunt, following their successful adventures surrounding the Royal Merchant in season 1, the Cross of Santo Domingo in season 2, and El Dorado in Outer Banks season 3s ending. This time around, the Pogues are being recruited to help find valuable artifacts related to the famous pirate Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, around the Outer Banks.

Outer Banks season 3 was released on Netflix in February 2023, so its been quite some time since the teens last treasure hunt. Notably, Outer Banks season 3 ended with an 18-month time jump after the Pogues collected the gold from El Dorado, so the gap between their dangerous adventures generally aligns with the real-world gap between seasons. However, Outer Banks season 4s story will be released on Netflix in two parts,...

Why El Dorado and Rio Bravo Are Such Similar Westerns
Image
One of the all-time most venerated Hollywood directors, Howard Hawks was a master at making movies in every genre under the sun. Whether helming the classic gangster film Scarface, the iconic musical Gentleman Prefer Blondes, the landmark film noir The Big Sleep, or the influential screwball comedy Bringing Up Baby, Hawks had a preternatural understanding of telling stories on the big screen. Of course, his biggest cinematic contributions may reside in the Western film genre.

After making Red River with John Wayne in 1948, Hawks continued working with The Duke throughout their careers. Yet, the glaring similarities between the 1959 Western Rio Bravo and the 1966 Western El Dorado have raised the question among cinephiles are the two movies the same? Did Hawks and Wayne deliberately remake their previous movie or were the story parallels coincidental? To find answers, a side-by-side comparison between them bears closer attention.

Quick Links When Will Outer Banks Season 4 Premiere? What Were Outer Banks' First Three Seasons About? What Could Outer Banks Season 4 Be About? Who Will Be Starring in Outer Banks Season 4?

One of the biggest hits Netflix has had in recent years has been Outer Banks. The show focused on teens in Kildare County, North Carolina. Fans saw the outcasts known as the Pogues and their rivals, the rich Kooks, going through the motions: love, angst, fighting, and rebelling against parents.

However, things got dicey when the Pogues got wrapped up in a series of treasure hunts. It had fans comparing it to Indiana Jones, National Treasure, and, of course, The Goonies. With the trailer now out for Season 4, here is an extensive look at what to expect as a new adventure looms.

This 1970 John Wayne Western Was The End Of A Trilogy & It's One Of His Most Underrated Movies
Image
Rio Lobo closed John Wayne's unofficial Rio Bravo Western trilogy. El Dorado and Rio Lobo essentially remade Rio Bravo, remixing characters and themes. Despite criticism, Rio Lobo, the last film of Howard Hawks' directing career, is a laidback, enjoyable ride.

Rio Lobo marked the end of an unofficial John Wayne trilogy, and has come to be regarded as one of his most underrated Westerns. John Wayne fronted 80 Westerns throughout his long career and starred in them right up until his final film, The Shootist. The 1970s was a grim time for the genre because outside of Wayne or Clint Eastwood, the popularity of the Western was on a downward trajectory in terms of box office. Many of Wayne's final efforts in the genre weren't up to the quality of his earlier work either.

The likes of Cahill U.S. Marshal and Wayne's only sequel Rooster Cogburn were lame efforts,...

10 Great Westerns That Are 90 Minutes or Less
Image
Despite social media causing shorter attention spans, movie runtimes have been significantly increasing since the dawn of the twenty-first century. In 2023, the average runtime of the ten highest-grossing movies in the United States was two hours and twenty-three minutes, up nearly thirty minutes from the average at the start of the decade. While films with epic lengths possess the ability to offer audiences a grand cinematic experience, sometimes it is not feasible to fit such a long movie into a busy schedule.

Historically, the Western has been one of cinema's best genres for the epic format. Some of the genre's greatest works, such as Dances with Wolves, Once Upon a Time in the West, and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, each have runtimes over two and a half hours. On the other end of the spectrum, the Western genre is also full of fantastic movies...

John Wayne & Dean Martin Are Revengeful Brothers in This Overlooked, Violent Western
Image
When you think of a John Wayne and Dean Martin on-screen meet-up, most likely it's Howard Hawks' 1959 Western Rio Bravo that pops into your head. In the film, it was John Wayne's character, Sheriff John T. Chance, who rehabilitated Dude. The film's premise, and particularly the camaraderie between the characters of these two icons, inspired other movies, including Hawks' "no story, just characters" remake El Dorado and a rather hilarious parody, Mel Brooks' 1974 comedy Blazing Saddles. In 1965, Wayne and Martin would collaborate once more, this time reuniting nostalgically as brothers out for revenge in director Henry Hathaway's overlooked, violent Western The Sons of Katie Elder.

The John Wayne & Howard Hawks Western That's "No Story, Just Characters"
Image
While his name isnt floated around as frequently as contemporaries like John Ford or John Huston, the great director Howard Hawks certainly deserves to be heralded as one of the finest filmmakers in cinematic history. Hawks almost single-handedly created the template for the modern romantic comedy with his classic films His Girl Friday and Bringing Up Baby, and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Director for his work on the classic biopic Sergeant York. While he was a versatile storyteller who often played within many genres, Hawks was able to create a unique style of Westerns that emphasized character development and thematic depth over traditionally satisfying narratives. When pitching his latest Western to his skeptical star, Hawks described his new film El Dorado as no story, just characters.

John Waynes Most Violent Western Is Even More Impressive Thanks To This Behind-The-Scenes Detail
Image
John Wayne co-helmed his goriest Western, Big Jake, due to director George Sherman's ill health. Big Jake marked John Wayne's final time working with Maureen O'Hara and featured his sons Patrick Wayne and Ethan as his on-screen family. Due to disliking violent films, Wayne insisted humor balance the violence in Big Jake, which turned out to be a mistake.

John Wayne made arguably his bloodiest Western in 1971, and the film is even more interesting when a certain making of detail is taken into account. John Wayne fronted 80 Westerns during his career and was still cranking them out at a steady pace during the 1970s. Despite the genre being in decline, most of the actor's output from this era like The Cowboys or Wayne's only sequel Rooster Cogburn turned a profit. Unfortunately, most of his final films like Howard Hawk's Rio Lobo are underwhelming, and the star was starting to show his age.

The Head Of Fox Once Taught Legendary Director Howard Hawks A Lesson He Never Forgot
Image
A case could be made that Howard Hawks is one of the greatest American directors of all time. His career spanned from the silent era in the mid-1920s all the way to 1970, and along the way, he made some of the most memorable classics the film industry has ever seen. Hawks directed one of the first gangster movies, made two of the best screwball comedies of all time with "Bringing Up Baby" and "His Girl Friday," created two of the best Humphrey Bogart/Lauren Bacall films ever (and an influential noir classic) with "To Have and Have Not" and "The Big Sleep," and directed at least three classic John Wayne Westerns in the form of "Red River," "Rio Bravo," and "El Dorado." Not too shabby.

But everyone has to start somewhere, and Hawks got a job working as a propman during the summers in the earliest days of Hollywood.

John Wayne's Rio Bravo Trilogy, Ranked
Image
John Wayne's Western trilogy includes Rio Bravo, El Dorado, and Rio Lobo, each with their own unique charm and themes. Despite their varying reputations, each movie showcases Wayne's legendary career and iconic roles in the Western genre. The chemistry between Wayne and his co-stars, as well as the influence of these movies on future filmmakers, adds to their lasting impact.

Rio Bravo is viewed as one of the most influential Westerns of all time and a highlight of John Wayne's legendary career, but some fans might not realize it is part of a trilogy from the actor. Wayne is mostly linked to the Western genre and appeared in some of the most iconic films in the genre, including True Grit, The Searchers, Red River and The Cowboys.
