The Last Man on Earth

Franca Bettoia, Italian Actress in ‘The Last Man on Earth,’ Dies at 88
Image
Franca Bettoia, the Italian actress who starred opposite Vincent Price in the 1964 cult sci-fi film The Last Man on Earth, has died in Rome, her family told the Italian news agency Adnkronos. She was 88.

Bettoia was married to Italian actor Ugo Tognazzi — he starred in the 1978 movie La Cage aux Folles in the part played by Robin Williams in Mike Nichols’ 1996 adaptation The Birdcage — from 1972 until his death from a cerebral hemorrhage in 1990 at age 68.

In The Last Man on Earth, directed by Ubaldo Ragona and Sidney Salkow, Bettoia portrays Ruth, a woman who, with the help of Price’s Dr. Robert Morgan, is fending off the effects of a plague that has turned humans into vampiric creatures.

Filmed in Rome, produced by Robert L. Lippert and distributed by American International Pictures, the movie was based on Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel I Am Legend. The author then co-wrote the screenplay credited as Logan Swanson.

Hammer Volume Six: Night Shadows

Once an upstart and now a company to contend with, Britain’s Indicator continues their series of Hammer Studio releases with Hammer Volume Six: Night Shadows, a purely generic subtitle fit for any horror film, Hammer or otherwise. What isn’t generic is Indicator’s winning formula—top notch image quality and boatloads of extra materials including documentaries, commentaries, image galleries—the works. The films in their latest set are already available stateside in more than adequate Blu ray versions—but Indicator’s work prevails on the sheer magnitude and quality of their content.

Kill, Baby…Kill! – The Blu Review
Review by Roger Carpenter

During the first half of the 60’s Mario Bava created several genuine horror classics that remain high-water marks in the genre over a half century later. Films such as Black Sunday (1960), Black Sabbath (1963), The Whip and the Body (1963), and Blood and Black Lace (1964) either pushed the boundaries of horror or helped to establish cinematic tropes still used in modern horror. Always saddled with shoestring budgets and bad deals, Bava nevertheless remained optimistic in the face of his cinematic struggles. A case in point is the troubled production of Kill, Baby…Kill! which ran out of money midway through the shoot. The cast and crew were so loyal to Bava they worked for free to finish the film—a film, by the way, which only had a 30-page script with no dialogue when filming commenced. Bava had the actors make up their own lines, preferring to resolve...

Halloween 2017: 31 Horror Films You Can Stream on Amazon Prime This October

There’s no denying that it can be an overwhelming experience to try and navigate your way through over 200 different pages of movies, so I went ahead and put together a list of 31 different films that should help you get into the Halloween spirit throughout the month of October. And since variety is the spice of life, I tried to give you guys an assortment of different sub-genres, so that you should be able to find something to fit any horror-loving mood! Happy October and happy viewing, everyone!

Drive-In Dust Offs: The Night Evelyn Came Out Of The Grave (1971)
I cherish a good giallo film. For those unfamiliar with this sub-genre, it’s like a slasher, but with an emphasis on police procedure and a dash of Italian Vogue. (Not to mention the ubiquitous gloved killer.) Starting in the mid ‘60s, they revved up the violence, leading to the watershed of Twitch of the Death Nerve (1971), where Mario Bava singlehandedly invented the “body count” that transferred across the water and led us to Haddonfield and Camp Crystal Lake.

But some gialli still let their freak flags fly, bringing us to The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave (1971), a film that blends bodies, bodices, castles, the supernatural, possible gas lighting, nudity, and triple crosses into an overflowing bath of ideas that is a lot of fun to splash around in. Not all the water stays in the tub, but there’s still plenty enough for a good soak.

Released in Italy in August,...

The legend of Ridley Scott’s I Am Legend
Padraig Cotter Oct 5, 2016

Arnold Schwarzenegger was set to star in I Am Legend, with Ridley Scott directing. We look back at a lost movie...

Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend is one of the greatest vampire novels ever written, and is a noted inspiration on people like Stephen King and George Romero. The book tells the story of Robert Neville, who is seemingly the lone survivor of a plague that turned most of humanity into bloodsucking ghouls. Neville survives nightly attacks by hordes eager for his blood while trying to overcome the crushing loneliness of being the last human left. It’s a book that manages the twin feat of being a great horror story and an achingly sad character study; it’s got a gut-punch of a twist too.

I Am Legend is an inherently cinematic concept, but it hasn’t had a smooth ride on the big screen.

Mel Brooks and Cleavon Little in Blazing Saddles (1974)
Is the end near for doomsday TV? NBC orders apocalypse dramedy series
Mel Brooks and Cleavon Little in Blazing Saddles (1974)
Are we nearing the end of the post-apocalyptic TV drama boom? NBC has ordered a dramedy series titled Apocalypse that stars Rob Lowe, Megan Mullally, Jenna Fischer and Matthew Baynton. The set-up: A comet is on an unavoidable collision course toward Earth and one extended family must navigate the societal chaos that ensues. Characters include "a foul-mouthed priest, an unhinged white supremacist, a mild-mannered bank manager, a germ-phobic cyber-terrorist, a five-star general and a child who (possibly) rose from the dead." They say that parodies signal the coming demise of a popular genre; see also how 1980's Airplane! crashed the airline disaster movie streak,...

Watch: Will Forte Rules The World In Trailer For Phil Lord & Chris Miller's Fox TV Series 'Last Man On Earth'
Even with big screen smash successes in 2014 with "The Lego Movie" and "22 Jump Street," Phil Lord and Chris Miller aren't leaving the creative opportunities of television untapped. This spring they're giving Will Forte a showcase role in "The Last Man On Earth," and the first teaser trailer is here. And yes, the concept is as simple as the title: one man is left as the sole person on Earth. And in Forte's hands, that means doing every crazy idea you've ever wanted to try with no fear of reprisal. It's an amusing teaser for sure, but don't think this one will be just a solo Forte show. January Jones and Kristen Schaal are part of the cast too, and that trio should prove to have an interesting dynamic. "The Last Man On Earth" arrives on March 1st, and Lord and Miller have directed a couple of episodes as well. Watch below.

12 New Television Shows We Can’t Wait to Watch
A new year and a new list! But while I suspect we’re all more than a bit tapped out on lists of lists on top of lists rehashing the glories and failures of 2014, this list is a bit different, because it’s forward-thinking, driving us to right into the glory of a year so fresh that it’s still wearing its official New Year’s Baby Cloth Diaper ©. This is a list about things to come, a list chronicling the unseen, a list of possibilities. In short, this is a list of dreams. It’s also — mainly, mostly — a list about entertainment to come, specifically of the small screen variety and particularly the kind that we will seen sooner rather than later. The traditional seasonal system has been shoved aside over the past few years, no longer dictating that autumn is the only time to see a bevy of new television offerings (though I still have...

Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol (2002)
Fox sets midseason plans for 'Glee,' 'Backstrom,' 'The Following' and more
Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol (2002)
Kudos to Fox for milking two days of news reports out of an otherwise unified announcement of its midseason schedule. After we reported yesterday that "American Idol" and "Empire" will premiere on January 7, Fox rolled out its entire midseason overhaul, including premiere dates for new drama "Backstrom," new comedies "The Last Man on Earth" and "Weird Loners," a new reality offering called "World's Funniest Fails" and returns for new seasons of "MasterChef Junior," "The Following" and "Hell's Kitchen." Fox also revealed plans for the final season of "Glee." After a fairly rough fall -- "Gotham" and "MasterChef Junior" are among the few unvarnished positives -- it's no wonder that Fox's changes touch every night of primetime. Let's look at the winter/spring premieres, jumping between chronological order and night-by-night. There will be a handy, but complicated, chart at the bottom of the page when this confuses you. Up first is...

Fox Orders YouTube Series 'World's Funniest Fails,' Sets Rest of Midseason
Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol (2002)
Fox has firmed up the rest of its midseason plans. After announcing premiere dates for Empire, American Idol and Glee, the network has found slots for everything else on its bench — and ordered a new unscripted project. World's Funniest Fails (working title) bows Jan. 16, ahead of Glee. Based on YouTube channel FailArmy, each week finds a panel of comedians analyzing viral clips of people epically failing. New comedies The Last Man on Earth and Weird Loners also have found points of entry on the schedule, as has drama Backstrom. The latter, from Bones creator Hart Hanson, bows Thursday,

John Cho and Karen Gillan in Selfie (2014)
Deathwatch: Fall TV survival status report
John Cho and Karen Gillan in Selfie (2014)
It's been a remarkably bloodless fall TV season. There have only been a few shows officially canceled (and a couple more unofficially), while other modestly rated shows have received rather generous full-season pick-ups (like ABC's Forever). Still, some titles have yet to receive a network verdict and could go either way. Below is our Deathwatch guide to what's sticking around for awhile, which shows are still on the bubble and which are canceled (or sorta canceled). One thing you'll notice is there are remarkably few currently endangered shows. That's not to say every green show is actually doing well or...

Blu-ray Review: The Vincent Price Collection II (Scream Factory)
The first Vincent Price collection from Scream Factory was a pure treasure. When October rolls around, almost nothing puts me in the Halloween mood like a constant stream of Vincent Price films on my TV. Never did I think that Scream could improve upon their original price collection, but when the films that would be included in this new set were announced, I was shocked. The first Vincent Price Collection has some really solid Price films, mostly of a Poe nature, and it was one of the most exciting releases of the year for fans of classic horror. The second set, drops the Poe theme(mostly), and includes some of Price’s most famous, well-regarded films, including a couple of my favorites. The list of films is impressive, and there are extras on most of the films. The packaging is consistent, and equally pleasing to the eyes. Scream Factory’s...

Who needs Will Smith? 'I Am Legend' is getting a reboot
(Cbr) Warner Bros. is going back to the post-apocalyptic well with another adaptation of Richard Matheson’s "I Am Legend" film. This one won’t feature Will Smith, who starred in the 2007 film, and sounds as if it won’t have much in common with the source material. According to Deadline, the studio asked Gary Graham to repurpose his script "A Garden at the End of the World" into a reboot. The original screenplay, which garnered a lot of attention on the Black List website, was described as a sci-fi version of "The Searchers," the 1956 John Ford classic in which John Wayne combs the West for the Comanches niece kidnapped his nieces and killed the rest of the family. This will mark the fourth time Matheson’s 1954 novel has been adapted for film. Vincent Price starred in the 1964 film "The Last Man on Earth," Charlton Heston played the lead in...

I Am Legend Again and Again and Again
Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend" continues to inspire adaptations. The first starred Vincent Price and was called The Last Man on Earth. Later, Charlton Heston starred in The Omega Man. Then, there was I Am Legend featuring Will Smith.

Well, despite the fact that the Smith film grossed over half a billion dollars at the global box office, Warner Bros. wants to reboot I Am Legend.

There have been repeated attempts to bring about a prequel and a sequel to the big screen.

I Am Legend getting a reboot
Warner Bros has given up trying to make a sequel or prequel to the Will Smith-headlined I Am Legend. It's going for a reboot instead.

This story contains - or implies at least - a spoiler for I Am Legend.

It's been just six years since the Will Smith-headlined take on I Am Legend proved to be a monster hit in cinemas. Since then, Warner Bros has been dabbled with how to make a sequel to the film which, er, isn't narratively the easiest thing to do given what happens in the first movie. At one stage it was going down the prequel route, but it couldn't find a way to make it work.

So it's hatched a new plan: it's going for a reboot. Hurray.

A new take on I Am Legend is being put together, using as its basis a screenplay for a film that was...

It’s impossible for me to hide the fact that Scream Factory is one of my favorite boutique media labels. Two of the biggest… neigh, The two biggest releases of the 2014 Halloween Seasons is coming from these guys. Night of the Comet UK Blu-ray / DVD Cover Art & Release Details
Stargazers crumble into dust or become zombies in Thom Eberhardt’s 1984 cult classic film, Night of the Comet. With adult supervision seemingly eradicated, surviving sisters Regina and Samantha have fun with their newfound freedom and their adventures are captured in next week’s UK Blu-ray / DVD release of Night of the Comet, complete with an abundance of special features.

Night of the Comet will be released on a dual format Blu-ray and DVD in the UK from Arrow Video on September 22nd. We have the official synopsis, list of special features, and a look at the cover art:

“It Was The Last Thing On Earth They Ever Expected.

Life can be tough when you’re a Valley girl. First, there’s making sure you’re on time for pep squad practice. Then there’s having to live under the same roof as your bitchy stepmother who, you suspect, is making...

New Who Review – “Listen”
“The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door…”

The idea is so close to implausible, it only makes it more plausible. What if there really is someone in the shadows? What if that isn’t just a passing breeze across the back of your neck? What if there is something under the bed?

The Doctor is unreasonably convinced of something, Clara is a non-stop chatterbox on dates, and Danny Pink’s real name is Rupert. And if you want to learn more, you have to not be worried about spoilers, and just…

The Doctor is roaming about the Tardis alone (we assume) slowly convincing himself of a patently ridiculous concept – the idea that there are invisible creatures who follow people around, and it’s they were are talking to when we are alone,...

Night Of The Comet on Blu isn’t a million miles away
Arrow Video is excited to announce the UK Blu-ray and DVD release of Night of the Comet, the 80s cult-classic which since its initial release in 1984, has gone on to amass a legion of loyal fans with its hugely entertaining riff on the apocalyptic sub-genre of movies, paying homage to such classics as The Omega Man and The Last Man on Earth. In fact, this might be the most purely entertaining depiction of the aftermath of a catastrophic event, not just in movie history but possibly... well, ever. The movie will make its UK Blu-ray debut on 22nd September 2014 in a newly restored transfer with a host of extra features including interviews with stars Kelli Maroney, Catherine Mary Stewart, Robert Beltran and Mary Woronov. The disc will also feature audio commentaries with writer/director Thom Eberhardt, stars Kelli Maroney and Catherine Mary Stewart and production designer John Muto. Alongside this,...

Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol (2002)
Upfronts 2014: Fox bets on year-round programming to counter 'Idol' struggles
Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol (2002)
For a decade or so, the schedules Fox announced during upfront week followed a predictable, amusing pattern: one schedule for the fall that would inevitably struggle, another schedule for mid-season built around the dominant presence of "American Idol," and then many, many changes made to that second schedule at a later date due to the struggles of the first. But "Idol" has slipped from being a juggernaut, to being a hit that no longer annihilated everything in its path, to being a solid utility player at best this spring — Fox president Kevin Reilly admitted to reporters on a press conference call that their "Idol" strategy is "not about turning it around," but simply making it a useful piece for the future — and as a result, Fox is finishing up one of its most problematic seasons ever, and didn't even bother announcing a mid-season schedule because they're still tinkering with how...

The X Factor (2011)
Fox's 2014-15 Schedule: 'Gotham' to Monday, 'Brooklyn' to Sunday and double 'Utopia'
The X Factor (2011)
Coming off a bumpy season and facing its first fall without three hours of "X Factor" in several years, Fox announced its 2014-15 schedule on Monday (May 12) morning. Actually, Fox only announced its Fall 2014 schedule on Monday. For the first time in recent memory, Fox didn't even attempt to present a midseason slate to advertisers as part of its upfronts presentation. Certainly Fox has plenty on the bench for a busy midseason, but the network has held back on January plans, perhaps waiting on the fate of the ambitious reality series "Utopia." While "X Factor" and its three hours are now, thankfully, gone, Fox scheduled two fall episodes with "Utopia," airing new episodes on Tuesday and Friday nights. In success, Fox execs have indicated that "Utopia" could continue forever -- Just like "Forever Eden"! -- which would impact Fox's spring slate. Fox also may want to hold off on deciding...
