Sad13’s Sadie Dupuis has revealed a spooky video for “The Crow” in time for Halloween.
The animated video for the Haunted Painting track features skeletal chicks in a nest, a ghost trying on clothes, and Dupuis ordering a drink from a sea monster. “What was it like to come of age/In such a cruel place,” she sings. “Supping on the bones/Of your old chaperones?”
“’The Crow’ wound up the heaviest song on Haunted Painting, although the demo was originally inspired by Clairo and solo Rob Crow,” Dupuis said in a statement.

Check out all the great classic horror movies playing on the small screen over the next two months on TCM, and be sure to set those DVRs so you don’t miss any of the classic films that are sure to get you into the Halloween spirit this year.

Happy (Good) Friday, everyone! Even though time isn’t much of a construct these days, the weekend is officially here and if you’re like me, you’re looking for ways to entertain yourself at home during this whole pandemic mess. And with the economy being what it is right now, I know it’s helpful for many folks out there to save money wherever you can, so I thought I would dive into all the great films over at Tubi TV to compile a list of more than 50 different cult films you can currently stream for free.
Just a note: there are a lot of definitions of “cult film,” so I did my best to not include a bunch of titles that horror fans throw around ad nauseam here, and I even opened up my search parameters a bit to include horror, sci-fi, and genre-adjacent titles that I feel...

Once likened to a sitcom directed by Luis Bunuel, Jack Hill’s bizarre mini-budget debut feature was barely seen until the video revolution. This one-of-a-kind jet-black comedy casts Lon Chaney as the harried caretaker of an inbred family of homicidal maniacs. Weird, dark and funny, with standout performances by Chaney, Sid Haig and the mesmerizing Jill Banner, who died in a car accident at 39. Be sure to visit the official Spider Baby website.

Since I showed some love to Netflix yesterday, I thought it was only proper today to put the spotlight on Amazon Prime and their vast streaming library that features hundreds of genre titles.
There’s no denying that it can be an overwhelming experience to try and navigate your way through over 200 different pages of movies, so I went ahead and put together a list of 31 different films that should help you get into the Halloween spirit throughout the month of October. And since variety is the spice of life, I tried to give you guys an assortment of different sub-genres, so that you should be able to find something to fit any horror-loving mood! Happy October and happy viewing, everyone!

A few years back the pioneering disc boutique Mondo Macabro imported a number of exotic Eastern horror films, such as Purana Mandir from India. Phil Hardy’s Encyclopedia of Horror reference book whetted my appetite for scores of amazing-sounding foreign horror pictures, that I thought I’d never see. Many of you who read my column may not often partake of the best of what Mubi has to offer, which is a beautifully curated, constantly changing selection of films which amounts to a top-notch repertory cinema on your laptop and in your living room. Now that Mubi is on the Roku app too there is even more reason to subscribe to the best film streaming deal on the internet. I know, I know, there is always too much to see and too little time, but for me what elevates Mubi over other streaming services—and I’m not just saying this because I write for them—is the 30-day model which offers you a new surprise every morning as well as the...

Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Jack Hill's Spider Baby (1967) will be showing January 24 - February 23 and Pit Stop (1967) will be showing January 25 - February 24, 2017 in the United States.Quentin Tarantino, unsurprisingly a gushing fan of Jack Hill, once famously compared the exploitation specialist to venerable Hollywood icon Howard Hawks, presumably on the basis of his distinctly personal preferences and his unassuming, across-the-board genre dabbling. Of course, those genres explored by Hawks—from westerns to screwball comedies—were considerably different than those in which Hill excels, but the point is well taken: within his respective niches, Hill does it as well as anyone, with skill and without pretense. This includes quintessential Blaxploitation classics like Coffy (1973) and Foxy Brown (1974), and some of the finest women-in-prison films ever made—yes, there are some very fine women-in-prison films—namely The Big Doll House (1971) and The Big Bird Cage...

Arrow Video resurrects Jack Hill’s first solo directorial effort, Spider Baby (1967) for lovers of cult oddities. Prior to becoming a lynchpin in the Blaxploitation film movement with his signature Pam Grier titles such as Coffy (1973) and Foxy Brown (1974), Hill knocked around as co-director on B-grade horror films, including Roger Corman and Stephanie Rothman projects. Unfortunately, this strange little number didn’t see release for several years due to its producers getting tied up in bankruptcy. Originally titled “Cannibal Orgy,” the theatrical release kept the extended title of Or the Maddest Story Ever Told (several other venues played it under the title The Liver Eaters). Not nearly gritty or violent enough to warrant such provocative monikers, its eventual name remains the most befitting. Featuring horror alum Lon Chaney Jr. and an eerie early role for (an almost unrecognizable) Sid Haig, Hill was obviously inspired at arming popular genre motifs with teeth.

Do you think we can win an Academy Award for this?

Glenn here trusting you had an enjoyably spooky Halloween weekend? On Saturday I went to a 12-hour horror marathon here in New York City, but on the night of All Hallows' Eve I attended a screening of Jack Hill’s lost laugh-out-loud horror classic Spider Baby at The Academy. Yes, the Academy. AMPAS have restored the 1967 black and white cannibal movie (with the assistance of Harvey Weinstein and Quentin Tarantino!) after being considered “abandoned property” due to rights issues. After years of being consigned to bad VHS-dub quality bootlegs, a print was discovered set for destruction (all too often, especially with public domain titles such as this) and now it has been restored in all of its beautiful, carnal, absurd glory in stunning 35mm. How was your Halloween?
The real treat was the Q&A afterwards.

What are orphan films? Movies about orphans? That's what the Motion Picture Academy's director of NY programs and membership Patrick Harrison thought when he first heard about Orphan Films Symposium organizer Dan Streible's work with rarely seen, previously neglected cinematic works, or orphan films. Now, years later, Streible's New York University Orphan Film Symposium and the Academy have partnered together on the New York screening series, "The Real Indies: A Close Look at Orphan Films," which kicks off Friday night with the Halloween-appropriate Spider Baby and continues throughout the day on Saturday. We haven’t done any kind of theme for a long time, so I thought I would reach out to some some talented people from other sites, and see if we can put something together. Before the internet, late night television and the long aisles of a video store were to cinephiles what ancient ruins were to archeologists. Somewhere deep and sometimes in the dark was that treasure just waiting to be discovered and shared with the world Archeologists got fame and glory. Cinephiles got the credit for showing you something you’ve never seen before.
But now in our new modern age of the internet and digital media, the search for those obscurities in the celluloid vaults has become a far more difficult undertaking. With video stores going the way of the dodo and revival houses always in danger of closing down, some films may never see the light of public consciousness again (if they ever saw it in the first place). It’s a scary possibility that audiences may be deprived of some of the best offbeat and obscure visions from filmmakers who...

Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).

Django Prepare A Coffin
Stars: Terence Hill, Horst Frank, George Eastman | Written by Ferdinando Baldi, Franco Rossetti | Directed by Ferdinando Baldi
When Tarantino wrote “the D is silent, hillbilly” in his screenplay for Django Unchained I can only imagine he had the same rueful wish that Django Prepare A Coffin had been a silent picture instead of being as woefully dubbed as it is. The film’s a curious lesson in thievery: first and most obviously in its title character Django, first appearing in Sergio Curbucci’s Django as played by Franco Nero; and secondly in its frequent use and abuse of the techniques perfected by Sergio Leone in The Good, The Bad And The Ugly two years previous.
Perhaps I’m starting on a sour note. The premise of the film is actually rather promising: mysterious Django works as a hangman, executing framed criminals for the bad guy, except...

Here I have a problem. I have seen many, many movies in my time. Lots of them are from Asia, especially recently. Some of the best movies I have seen recently have been from Korea: The Host, Tae Guk-gi, My Way, Old Boy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, The Warrior, Attack the Gas Station.
I watched 301/302 pretty much on a whim. If you are a Netflix member you know that if you put a dvd in your queue lots of recommendations pop up? That’s how I heard about this movie, I put it in my queue while searching Asian titles, and forgot about it, all I knew was the generic label of “thriller”.
Like I said I have seen lots of movies, I have never seen anything quite like 301/302. A brief description doesn’t do it justice, but this is what happens. Bang Eyun-jin lives in apartment 301 with her husband,...

Spider Baby
This darkly humorous, deeply demented 1964 curiosity is a genuine cult phenomenon, one with a reputation that grows by the year. By the time it came out in 1968, hardly anyone cared. However, it's subsequently found an audience, so today we can enjoy it on a rather well-assembled Blu-ray.
It's usually classed as a horror film or a B-movie but this slice of American gothic doesn't fit neatly into either category. It concerns the Merrye family, a clan so inbred they have a rare malady named after them. Merrye syndrome affects one branch of this rotten family tree, causing regression ("A progressive deterioration of the mental faculty … a rotting of the brain, so to speak") to set in as they reach adolescence. Kept sequestered in a dilapidated house, three afflicted youngsters are protected by custodian Bruno...

This is a continuation of my series on Rob Zombie's feature films as a director leading up to the Friday release of his latest effort, The Lords of Salem (Read the first entry Here). I had the opportunity to speak with him at length about all five of his films and am exploring them in chronological order with snippets of my interview interspersed throughout. Today, we move on to his sophomore effort, The Devil's Rejects. The Devil's Rejects Zombie followed up House of 1000 Corpses with The Devil's Rejects, a stylistic departure from its predecessor in every conceivable way. Shifting away from the cool blues and psychedelic super-8 motif of House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects is a sun burnt road film straight out of the '70s. A drive-in exploitation picture released in the politically volatile summer of 2005, The Devil's Rejects found the Firefly clan on the...

Curious parties can follow both Wan and Whannell's Twitter accounts as they continue to post updates throughout production over the next three weeks. Insidious Chapter 2 is due out in August....

Connoisseurs of horror, cult and grindhouse cinema around the world have flocked to UK's Arrow Video to find classy DVD and Blu-ray releases of their favorite titles, often with bonus features not found on Us editions. Most of today’s horror fans are very aware of Sid Haig and his role as the notorious Captain Spaulding in Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses (2003) and The Devil’s Rejects (2005). But what many fans aren’t aware of is that Sid Haig’s career dates back to 1960 with over 60 film and over 350 television appearances. He’s been in the business for over 50 years and has worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Lon Chaney Jr., Omar Sharif, Sean Connery, George Lucas, and Quentin Tarantino. Haig started making a name for himself while working with director Jack Hill in his exploitation films such as Spider Baby (1968), Pit Stop (1969), The Big Doll House (1971), and The Big Bird Cage (1972). He continued working in Hollywood in a variety of villainous roles including Diamonds are Forever (1971), Coffy (1973), Foxy Brown (1974), Savage Sisters (1974), Jackie Brown (1997), and Kill Bill vol.

Last year, just before Halloween, I wrote a list titled the Greatest Comedy Horrors. There were many omissions, oversights and even more films that I just hadn’t heard of before as recommended by you, the reader. Last time it was about the greatest, no such ambition is being upheld this time, a lot of these films barely scrape into the good category. Their appearance is merely on how successfully they merge the two genres. This year, I will be posting a list of movies, broke into five separate articles. This is the first.
There is a very narrow line that divides finding something the scary and the funny. No greater example of this are the league of horror films that try to scare but only evoke laughter. With more intentional comedy, there are two ways you can address this cross pollination. The first and the much more popular route is comedy about horror,...

As with all lists, this is personal and nobody will agree with every choice – and if you do, that would be incredibly disturbing. It was almost impossible for me to rank them in order, but I tried and eventually gave up.

Special Mention:
American Psycho

2000, USA
Bret Easton Ellis’s dark and violent satire of America in the 1980s was brought to the big screen by director Mary Harron. Initially slapped with the MPAA’s kiss of death (an Nc-17 rating), American Psycho was later re-edited and reduced to a more commercially dependable “R”. Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead had its Canadian premiere during the Fantasia International Film Festival, and Trembles came back with a Motion Picture Purgatory review for the film from mad genius Noboru Iguchi. Check it out!
Subtitled Toilet Of The Dead, this episode of excremental excess from Noboru Iguchi (Mutant Girls Squad, last year’s Karate-robo Zaborgar) is grindhouse as all hell, from the hilarious trailer and funky opening credits to its references to cult-film classics like Re-animator and Spider Baby and its delicious early-’80s score (Suspiria meets Halloween). Throw in some flashback bullying, numerous butt cracks, monsters care of FX freak Yoshihiro Nishimura, tentacle erotica (!), and some Cronenberg-style body-horror in a Troma vernacular (read: plenty of kinky nudity and cheap gore galore), and you get the idea here (sort of). The cast includes usual Sushi Typhoon suspects such as Asami from Iguchi’s Machine Girl, Tokyo Gore Police’s Tenkaro Kishi,...

You Are Not I
"Showcasing a free-form approach to narrative that you'll wish wasn't all but extinct in American independent cinema," writes Benjamin Mercer in the L, "Sara Driver's long-unavailable (and too small) body of work constitutes a minor revelation. In her 1981 debut, You Are Not I — recently rediscovered and refurbished, providing the impetus for Anthology's retrospective — Driver laid the groundwork for her eerily dissonant overlay of enchantment, terror, and tedium: Adapting a Paul Bowles story with longtime collaborator (and partner) Jim Jarmusch, who also shot the film on black-and-white 16mm, You Are Not I is an outer-boundary study in the mind's capacity to project its disturbance." Suzanne Fletcher plays Ethel, "who has somehow escaped from a nearby mental hospital in the flaming aftermath of a several-car pileup. She travels through a derelict zone to her sister's house, where the 'inconvenient' Ethel winds up in an unnervingly clenched domestic showdown.
