The Bulletin recalls reporter Lizzie Hogan from her DC based assignment to take up an undercover role as a newly released prison parolee in New York. There, with the agreement and support of the local parole service, she will shadow a real parolee, Eadie Donelli, gain her trust, investigate her life circumstances, and write a feature about it. The Bulletin wants a story, the parole service want analysis into why so many female parolees end up back behind bars. Both Hogan and Donelli have to prove themselves to others, Donelli, diagnosed as a manic depressive, has to repair relations with her parents and brother whilst bonding again as a widowed mother with her young child. Hogan had become too pally with the Washington political crowd and her editors believed it was lowering the quality of her reports. Also stepping into the situation is Ray, a bartender with unknown background who may or may not offer Eadie the love she psychologically craves..
