Denzel Washington has been an inspiration in every definition of the word. Being one of the most respected and successful actors of all time, there is a reason why he has the reputation he does. Be it a film series like The Equalizer or Oscar-winning films like Glory or Training Day, it is difficult to put him in a box.

It could have been very easy to typecast Washington and leave him in a specific kind of role for the rest of his career. However, he managed to push through this and became one of the most versatile actors in the industry. With this in mind, one can imagine that his career would also help others navigate getting typecast.
During an interview, Marvel star Benicio Del Toro revealed that Washington was a very big reason for how his career was shaped.

In a remarkable career spanning over 60 years, Kurt Russell has just about done it all. He's been a Disney child star, an action hero, a serious dramatic actor, an unabashedly silly comedic lead, and Elvis Presley. Though Russell was never a box office titan on par with contemporaries like Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bruce Willis, he is worshipped as a god by genre fandom for having played such iconic s***kickers as Snake Plissken in "Escape from New York," R.J. MacReady in "The Thing" and Jack Burton in "Big Trouble in Little China." Those last two were flops theatrically, but they've gone from being cult favorites to bona-fide mainstream classics. As a result, Russell, at the age of 73, might be more beloved now than he's ever been.
For Russell fanatics, there's a lively discussion to be had over what his best performance outside of that aforementioned holy trinity of John Carpenter movies might be.

Apparently nothing says Happy New Year more than Denzel Washington kicking some ass, because a lot of people are revisiting his 2018 action thriller The Equalizer 2. So much so that the six-year-old film is climbing the charts on Prime Video, rising to the number three spot behind Red One and the Spanish flick, Culpa Tuya. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, The Equalizer 2 once more follows Washington's character of Robert McCall as he seeks vengeance after one of his friends is murdered.
Hitting theaters on July 20, 2018, The Equalizer 2 also features Pedro Pascal, Bill Pullman, Ashton Sanders, and Melissa Leo. Produced on a budget of nearly $80 million dollars, it managed to gross $190 million in box office receipts, which was pretty much on par with the 2014 original. The film marked the fourth collaboration between Washington and Fuqua, following not only the first movie in the franchise, but Training Day (2001) and The Magnificent Seven (2016) as well.

"The Terminator" is one of those unimpeachable sci-fi classics that feels fundamental to the evolution of the genre. As such, it's strange to think of director James Cameron having any specific inspiration, especially considering the impetus for the 1984 movie was as personal as Cameron having a nightmare which included that now famous image of a chrome Terminator exoskeleton emerging from a fire.
Beyond that, "The Terminator" has taken on a sort of mythical aura in the history of cinema. Like Paul McCartney having to verify "Yesterday" didn't already exist before he could accept that he'd written it, the idea for "The Terminator" seems like such a foundational sci-fi concept that it's odd to think there was a time when it didn't exist in the public consciousness. A killer robot is sent back in time to prevent a future war — like all good ideas it's simple without being simplistic and made...

Out of all the leading men in '70s cinema, Charles Bronson was in a class of his own. After a decade of supporting roles in ensemble classics such as The Magnificent Seven and The Dirty Dozen, he became an international superstar at age 54 playing New York vigilante Paul Kersey in 1974's Death Wish. Come the 80s, however, Bronsons star power waned as he became the go-to leading man for Cannon Films B-level action programmers including the critically derived Death Wish sequels. At the darkest moment of his life in 1990, a rare opportunity to act against type was presented to Bronson for Sean Penns directorial debut: The Indian Runner.

Now who doesn’t know Clint Eastwood, an actor and director who pretty much revolutionized the face of Hollywood with his acting and directing talent. A one-of-a-kind star, it wasn’t until he was cast in Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars that he received the much-needed break that would enable him to become an enduring cultural icon of masculinity.

One of the most iconic collaborations in the history of films, A Fistful of Dollars, not only put Eastwood on the map but also revolutionized the Western genre and the era of ‘Spaghetti Westerns’. The Western genre stands out as one of the strongest and most compelling in cinema. Despite its declining audience in the 21st century, the genre continues to have an impressive output, with many of the best-written and best-acted films in history taking place in the Old West. From action-packed adventure to ultra-violent antihero stories and even war movies, there are plenty of great movies to choose from.
The Western genre is, alongside drama and war, something of an outlier in cinema due to the fact it has so few sequels. In fact, many of the movies deemed duologies or trilogies in the genre are often loosely related, and there's a famous trend of stars rarely reprising their roles when they are follow-ups, such as the True Grit and High Noon sequels. As a result, few Western sequels are held in high esteem, though there are plenty worth a look.

Legendary Western stars team up to form alliances and take on adversities, teaching the power of solidarity, comradery, and teamwork. John Wayne, Paul Newman, and Clint Eastwood are among the Western stars who have made incredible team-up movies. Films like The Magnificent Seven, Rio Bravo, and Ride the High Country highlight the importance of partnership and trust in the Western genre.
Over the years, the Western genre has had plenty of movies where legendary Western actors team up and overcome adversity. There are plenty of stories about bandits, cowboys, and outlaws being brought together through the most unlikely of circumstances and who are then forced to form an allegiance with one another and take on a multitude of desperados, gunslingers, and renegades. Zack Snyder disappoints in a galaxy far, far away as his space opera franchise stumbles with a contrived start. Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire is an uninspired mishmash of familiar themes, characters, and settings taken from classic blockbusters. The film unfurls like a role-playing video game where a deadly protagonist doles out her backstory while collecting allies on a quest for salvation. The relatively simple plot has a one-note ensemble of ragtag revolutionaries that struggle to resonate with the audience. Initially slick action sequences become banal from the excessive use of slow motion cinematography. We've seen this all before and unfortunately done better.
The film's premise has the Motherworld, an Empire-like autocracy, subjugating the universe with ruthless oppression and bloody carnage. A lineage that lasted for 1000 generations is broken after a mysterious assassin kills the king (Cary Elwes) and royal family. Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) takes control...

Zack Snyder’s space opera, Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire, is ready to take audiences on an epic journey. The premiere of the Netflix film was held this week in Los Angeles. Our own Chris Bumbray was able to attend and he came away tweeting that the movie “owes a lot to Star Wars and a ton to The Magnificent Seven, but it’s also way more entertaining than anything Lucasfilm has put out in a while.” And in another tweet, “Very old-school Star Wars. Felt like a movie that could have been made in 1980, but in a good way.” He also noted that Netflix may have made an error in their release approach. “Netflix could have made a mint with this in theaters given how weak a line up of tentpoles we have in theaters this Christmas.”

As divisive as his films tend to be, many can agree that Zack Snyder's career has always been that of a trendsetter. When the filmmaker's distinct grasp of visual style and flair (developed while working in the music video scene early on) brought Hollywood knocking at his door, Snyder spent the next several years bringing various concepts to life that most considered "unfilmable." His groundbreaking adaptation of the graphic novel "300," which arguably redefined blockbuster action in pop culture throughout the early aughts, directly led to Snyder getting his hands on the holy grail of "Watchmen" in 2009. Although superhero movies moving forward would generally opt for the airy tone of Marvel's "Iron Man" rather than Snyder's grand and operatic take, the seeds were planted for the DC superhero world that would consume him for much of the next decade -- and eventually lead to darker, more cynical, and self-reflexively...

Zack Snyder finally got to make his long-rumored Star Wars movie, except this one has the “violence, sex, and swearing.” That’s according to actor Ed Skrein, who plays the evil Admiral Atticus Noble in the new Netflix sci-fi epic, Rebel Moon. Headed to the streaming service next week, the latest Snyder film is the culmination of a long journey for the director, who first pitched his idea for a more mature, “Seven Samurai in space” to Lucasfilm in the early days of the Disney take over. While the Mouse House didn’t bite back then, Netflix was happy to oblige as part of an ongoing collaboration with the director, which began the 2021 smash hit Army of the Dead.

In a big step forward for data transparency, the leading streaming platform Netflix releases total hours of viewing time for everything on its service.
One of the major criticisms of Netflix and other Silicon Valley streaming platforms over the past few years has centred upon the company’s reluctance to play nice and share data with others.
Big Tech has always been renowned for data secrecy but as it has increasingly moved into the entertainment sector, that refusal to reveal information has led to conflict with the creative community who are used to seeing viewing numbers as a means of determining a film or TV series’ success, not to mention that it’s also vital in helping creators to put a dollar-figure on any subsequent work that they create.

Pierce Brosnan trades his renowned Irish accent for a genteel Southern elocution in the crime thriller Fast Charlie. Adapted from the novel Gun Monkeys by Victor Gischler, Brosnan plays Charlie Swift, a hit man and longtime enforcer of aged Biloxi mob boss Stan Mullen (James Caan). Charlie joins forces with Marcie Kramer (Morena Baccarin), the ex-wife of a dead mark, after Stan is betrayed by a ruthless competitor (Gbenga Akinnagbe).
Venerated Australian director Phillip Noyce was interested in a story that had "three really interesting characters poised on the second half of their lives." He would only "sign on to the picture" if the producers hired screenwriter Richard Wenk and moved the setting from Florida to his "favorite city in the world" — New Orleans. Noyce credits Wenk as a "master storyteller" of "characters, humor, suspense, and action." Fast Charlie surprises as a dark comedy, something Noyce hadn't done since 1989's Blind Fury.

Zack Snyder first came up with the idea for 'Rebel Moon' as a college student. The 57-year-old filmmaker is helming the two-part space opera and explained that the concept first entered his mind when he was in the classroom.Zack told Total Film magazine: "It came from a pitch class I had at college. I said it was like a cross between 'The Dirty Dozen' and 'The Magnificent Seven' set in space."Part of the conversation was: 'Why would Hollywood say no to your idea?' And no one could think of a reason. It always stuck in my mind."'Rebel Moon' has been split into two parts – with the first movie slated for later this month and the sequel 'Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scaregiver' to follow in April 2024 – and screenwriter Shay Hatten explained that there is a "different flavour" to each picture. He said:...

Director Zack Snyder has been dreaming up a film like Rebel Moon for nearly 40 years.
In a lengthy The Hollywood Reporter profile on the director, Snyder revealed that he first envisioned the upcoming Netflix film's sci-fi concept in the 1980s while attending film school. Largely inspired by Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai and its Western remake The Magnificent Seven, he proposed the idea to Kathleen Kennedy as an R-rated Star Wars film in 2012, stating, "I thought that Star Wars was in a vulnerable state, so I thought I had a chance."

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

Thank You for Your Service finds Miles Teller leading an ensemble cast of real-life characters as it explores the mental health struggles that many military personnel face in real life. Based on the 2013 non-fiction book of the same name by journalist David Finkel, the 2017 movie doubles as a war drama and a biography. The narrative puts the spotlight on U.S. Army veterans of the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment during their deployment in Iraq in 2007. Instead of just glorifying their patriotism, Thank You for Your Service humanizes these soldiers and delves into their struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder (Ptsd) after returning home.
Jason Hall, the Oscar-nominated writer of the similarly-themed biopic American Sniper, helmed Thank You For four Service as both director and screenwriter. Apart from its star-studded cast, the war movie also boasts an original song titled “Freedom Cadence” by Bruce Springsteen that plays during the closing credits. Despite bombing at the box office,...

Now Amazon’s MGM+ is playing with “Power.” And “Outlander,” and “P-Valley,” etc.
Starz and Amazon have struck what the companies are calling a “long term” deal to bundle Starz with MGM+ on Prime Video in the U.S. The subscription bundle, which is launching “in the coming weeks,” will cost 11.99 per month, the companies said on Friday. That’s a 20 percent discount vs. subscribing to both services on a standalone basis, which would cost 14.99. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Starz was already available as a Prime Video Channels add-on for 8.99 per month. This arrangement just brings it more within the family.
“We are excited to join forces with Amazon to offer Starz together with MGM+ to their millions of customers on Prime Video,” said Alison Hoffman, president of domestic networks for Starz. “Starz is a complementary service to general entertainment offerings, so we’re thrilled to...

Coda took the world by storm, and the film which won the Best Picture Oscar last year. however, now all audiences might know that it is in fact an American remake of an international movie, a Belgian-French production called La Famille Bélier.
In fact, there are a number of excellent examples of American remakes that somehow managed to be just as good as their international original movie. These are the types of films that manage to capture something of the source text, while also leaving their undeniable imprint on the original story.

The Story of Film: A New Generation opens at two dozen theaters this weekend — Laemmle Royal in LA, Museum of the Moving Image in NY, Music Box Theatre in Chicago and Brattle in Cambridge. It’s a mix of arthouses, cinematheques, museums and even a few multiplexes for Mark Cousins’ follow-up to his 15-hour, 2011 opus The Story Of Film: An Odyssey. (This one clocks a relatively brief three hours.)
Several theaters are programming repertory series with the release, “which we feel will elevate its profile and continue the conversation,” said Kyle Westphal, head of theatrical sales for Music Box Films, the distributor for both installments.
A New Generation debuted at Cannes to strong reviews, Deadline’s here. Now, Westphal said, the first film, only available in standard definition, has been remastered in HD and both works will be released in a Blu-ray box set. The earlier work, which essentially played...

This Bullet Train article contains some spoilers.
Bullet Train comes barreling into theaters loaded with a heaping helping of gratuitous violence. This is no surprise from director David Leitch, who began his career as a stuntman, specifically Brad Pitt’s stuntman. Consequently, Leitch is a master at delivering action and ultra-violence on a grand scale.
The title reflects this and its setting, with the Shinkansen, a 50+ year old network of high-speed railways, colloquially known as the “bullet train” in Japan. Since it began, there has not been a single passenger fatality or injury on board these lines due to either derailments or collisions. That all changes in Leitch’s Bullet Train where a sword through the throat is standard operating procedure.
Bullet Train is based on the 2010 Japanese novel, Maria Bītoru (Maria Beetle), by bestselling author Kōtarō Isaka. This book was translated into English last year and retitled Bullet Train to match the movie,...

Amazon is weeks into negotiations on a deal to acquire MGM for about $9 billion, industry sources tell Variety.
Chatter that Amazon (and other tech and media giants) have been sniffing around MGM has circulated for some time. But sources indicated that Amazon’s interest in acquiring the studio has taken on a new tenor beyond the usual rumor mill. The deal is said to be being orchestrated by Mike Hopkins, senior VP of Amazon Studios and Prime Video, directly with MGM board chairman Kevin Ulrich, whose Anchorage Capital is a major MGM shareholder.
Reps for Amazon and MGM declined to comment.
MGM had already effectively nailed up a “for sale” sign: Variety confirmed in December that the company was looking for a buyer.

It’s tough for Ethan Hawke to remember his relationship to John Brown prior to playing him in Showtime’s “The Good Lord Bird” because he fell so hard for the project. His understanding of Brown came from differing perspectives. “My dad was living in Texas and my mom was living in Vermont and you’d hear very different stories about the Civil War about what it was and what it wasn’t,” Hawke tells us in our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above). In one area Brown would be considered a lunatic and a terrorist but in the another he’d be recognized as part of the abolitionist movement. It wasn’t until a camera operator on the set of “The Magnificent Seven” introduced him to James McBride’s novel that a clearer picture formed in his head. “I was so moved, touched, in love with and grateful...

Back up in the mountains Clint wants to ride on with Jake but Jake says no. He busted Clint out of jail because he figured he owed him for doing the same thing for him once. Now they’re even. Clint doesn’t agree. There’s that matter of the $20,000 they stole on their last job together.

Steve McQueen died at the age of 50 on Nov. 7, 1980, after suffering cardiac arrest. The Indiana native made a name for himself starring as the rugged antihero in classic 1960s films like Bullitt, The Great Escape, The Thomas Crown Affair, and The Magnificent Seven; he was dubbed "The King of Cool" thanks to his good looks - That sandy blond hair! Those piercing baby blues! - laid-back attitude, and penchant for doing his own stunts. We're paying homage to Steve McQueen with a look back at his most memorable (and most handsome) photos over the years. Scroll through to see them all now. (Aton) The trailer for the ‘Death Wish‘ remake has finally landed. The Eli Roth-directed vehicle stars Bruce Willis as Dr. Paul Kersey, a Chicago surgeon who goes out for revenge when his wife, (Elizabeth Shue) and daughter (Camila Morrone) are attacked in a vicious home invasion.
The original ‘Death Wish‘, which stared Charles Bronson and spawned four sequels, is considered to be a classic among revenge flicks, if not cult status at the least. The remake was written by Joe Carnahan, and will mark Roth’s first venture into the action/revenge genre. Carnahan was originally set to direct, but after creative differences Roth stepped in to helm the picture.
The film also stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Jack Kesy, Dean Norris, and Mike Epps. Here’s the first full trailer.
Here’s the official synopsis for the remake:
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures presents director Eli Roth’s reimagining of the classic 1974 revenge thriller Death Wish.

"They came for his family. Now he's coming for them."
Bruce Willis shoots people first and asks questions later in this first trailer for the remake of Death Wish. He goes on a killing spree of revenge after his wife is murdered. The movie was directed by Eli Roth, and this is a different kind of film for him. Roth is mostly known for the horror films that he's made. Death Wish is more of an action-thriller, an action-thriller that involves lots of killing. So, it seems like something Roth would enjoy making.
I'm not the biggest fan of Roth, but I enjoy watching Bruce Willis movies and the screenplay was written ben Joe Carnahan (Smokin' Aces, The A-Team, The Grey). Those are the two main reasons that I'll end up watching this movie. Judging by the trailer, the movie looks like it could be fun an entertaining, but it...
