Bobby Banas, the actor, dancer and choreographer who played Joyboy in West Side Story and worked in such other famed movie musicals as Bye Bye Birdie, The Unsinkable Molly Brown and Mary Poppins, has died. He was 90.
Banas died Monday of pneumonia at an assisted living facility in Encino, his son, director and photographer Eden Tyler Banas, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Banas received newfound attention when a clip of him leading five others in a dance number to the song “The Nitty Gritty” on a 1964 episode of CBS’ The Judy Garland Show found its way on YouTube. It has since been viewed many millions of times.
Banas’ Joyboy was a member of the Jets in West Side Story (1959). Later, the performer was bowled over by a kiss from Marilyn Monroe in Let’s Make Love (1960), played a chimney sweep in Mary Poppins (1964) and danced in a nightclub with Ann-Margret in Made in Paris...

Jerry Seinfeld is the man. Known for being one of the greatest comedians of an entire generation, he has carved out quite a reputation for himself in the industry. His antics and comic timing have made him iconic, but that isn’t the only thing that makes him a comedian who is in his own league. The star of Seinfeld might be one of the most highly-rated comedians out there, but he doesn’t give a f**k about what others will think of him for saying a particular thing.

An all-rounder, Jerry Seinfeld has done it all in his life. He has won an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a couple of Screentime Actors Guild awards. He is already royalty in the industry. And as if that wasn’t enough to stamp his authority,...

The hit Sci-fi series 3 Body Problem generates buzz everywhere for its cutting-edge and experimental story. But that is not the only reason the series is in the news. In a tale made for Netflix’s True Crime Documentary, bizarre and haunting news has come to light about the show. A former executive associated with the Late Producer, Lin Qi, has been sentenced to death after he was accused of murdering the billionaire.
The story behind one of Netflix‘s biggest shows gets more twisted. Billionaire and Video Game Tycoon Lin Qi hoped to make “The Three-Body Problem,” one of China’s most famous science-fiction novels, a global success. He had begun collaborating with Netflix and the HBO series Game of Thrones makers to bring the alien invasion saga to a worldwide audience.

Bruno Mars is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with over 130 million records sold worldwide. Surprisingly, he has achieved this feat with three solo albums and one collaborative album. Although he moved to Los Angeles in 2003, he did not gain recognition in the music industry until 2010 when his voice was featured in B.o.B.’s Nothin’ on You and Travie McCoy’s Billionaire.

Kevin Spacey has reignited his Christmas Eve tradition of posting a bizarre video of himself as his “House of Cards” character, Frank Underwood. This year, Spacey sat down for an interview with Tucker Carlson, where the two discussed Netflix and the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
“Every time a person pulls up the Netflix app. You’re there in some way, have you seen this?” Carlson asked, playing the Netflix “tudum” intro sound.
“Yes, you know what that is?” Spacey said, then pounded his fist on the table like Underwood does in “House of Cards.” “Boom, boom. So it is bizarre they decided to publicly cut ties with me on allegations alone, allegations that have now been proven false. Because I don’t think there’s any question. Netflix exists because of me. I put them on the map and they tried to put me in the ground.”

Carnage's previous preference for indiscriminate slaughter without a message hasn't driven anyone to worship him, so he shifts his tactics. Carnage recognizes the value in Joker's views on murder and adopts a similar approach to killing, hoping to gather new followers and attain godhood.

With both Disney and Warner Bros. turning 100 this year, it’s a great time to remember the Golden Age of moviemaking. The business is changing at a precipitous rate, and recent studio mergers have forever altered the longtime map of Hollywood production.
Actors and crew members, like armies, march on their stomachs, and since the dawn of the industry, it’s been up to the studios where they’re shooting to keep them well fortified. Studio executives and office workers, too, needed a convenient place to eat on the lots.
While researching the recent Culinary Historians presentation “Lunching on the Lot,” a 1997 quote from Variety story turned up which deftly explained what studio commissaries meant to the business. “After a gourmet tour of studio eateries, however, one thing is clear — It ain’t the chow that’s important. When the tribe hunkers down for its daily repast, ritual and symbolism are the rule.

A March 2021 helicopter crash that killed Czech billionaire Petr Kellner was most likely caused by a pilot error and inadequate training, according to a report by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.
Kellner was president of the investment group Ppf and was the Czech Republic’s richest man when he was killed in a heli-skiing crash in Alaska. Kellner died alongside Sean McManamy, Gregory Harms, Benjamin Larochaix and pilot Zachary Russell. The sole survivor survivor of the crash was David Horvath.
Horvath told investigators that the helicopter flew from Wasilla Lake to an area for a skiing day on March 27, 2021. Russell attempted to land on a Knik Glacier ridgeline at around 6,200-foot altitude for the last run of the day.
The Ntsb said that “the pilot’s failure to adequately respond to an encounter with whiteout conditions, which resulted in the helicopter’s collision with terrain.”

The joint strikes by SAG-AFTRA and WGA have halted all current productions since July 14, 2023, impacting everyone in the industry from big-name actors to background performers. The strikes aim to fight against executives using AI technology in future films and TV series, as well as address concerns about working conditions, compensation, and unauthorized use of digital likenesses. The last joint strike between the two unions in the 1960s led to major disruptions in the industry, halting production on eight major movies. The resolution was achieved with the help of negotiations led by future U.S. President Ronald Reagan, benefiting both writers and actors.
The WGA and SAG-AFTRA are striking together again since their first joint strike in 1960. The Writers Guild of America is protesting against major Hollywood studios like Sony, Universal, and Warner Bros., which will in turn impact most streaming services. The 2023 SAG & WGA dual strike marks the first time that the two Hollywood unions have protested simultaneously in over six decades. The Writers Guild of America is being joined in protest against major Hollywood studios such as Sony, Universal, and Warner Bros. as well as tech streaming giants Netflix, Apple, and Amazon. SAG-AFTRA begins their strike more than two months after the WGA started theirs, which will prohibit all 160,000 members from participating in new productions or promoting upcoming television and movie releases. The SAG-AFTRA strike affects everyone from Hollywood's biggest celebrity actors to lesser-known background actors.
The combined SAG and WGA strike will force all current productions to halt as of July 14, 2023 as writers and actors alike combat executive efforts to increasingly rely on AI technology for future films and television series. Writers who have been weary about the threat of AI-generated screenplays are joined in solidarity by actors who...

Love is not the only thing in the air this February. The Grammy Awards took place on February 5, celebrating the best in the recording arts. One wouldn’t typically associate the Grammys with lovebirds — except of course when love songs like “I Will Always Love You” prevail. But this awards season is reminding me of one relationship goal that’s probably less common than going on vacations together or pulling off sick Halloween couples costumes. Here are five pairs of romantic partners who share that they’re both Grammy-winning artists.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z
Starting off the list strong, Beyoncé recently became the most awarded individual in Grammy history, racking up 32 wins. Jay-Z is not far behind, having earned 24 trophies throughout his extensive career. Jay and Beyoncé therefore hold the record for the most lauded couple in Grammy history with a combined 56 awards. Kenneth Wannberg, composer and Emmy-winning music editor who worked on nearly half of all John Williams’ films dating back to the late 1960s, died Jan. 27 at his home in Florence, Oregon. He was 91.
Wannberg was best known as Williams’ music editor, working closely with the composer on more than 50 of his films. He assisted Williams throughout the scoring process, from providing detailed descriptions of sequences to be scored to more technical aspects such as trimming or modifying music during the last stages of post-production.
He music-edited the first six “Star Wars” films, the first three “Indiana Jones” films and such other landmark Williams scores as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Jurassic Park,” “Schindler’s List” and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”

Just moments ago, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the total number of movies that are eligible to win their Best Picture prize. This time around, there are 366 films that are in contention to take the Oscar for Best Picture. That would be the largest number for the Academy in a half century, which is an interesting quirk, considering the expanded Academy Awards eligibility this year. The list is below, but it contains all of the expected flicks, as you might imagine. Now, we just have to wait a few more weeks and see which titles are nominated for Best Picture. Then, we can whittle this list down from 366 to something less than ten. Sit tight for that… Here are all 366 films eligible for this year’s Best Picture Oscar: Absent Now the Dead Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus Alberto and the Concrete Jungle All...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

The number of films available to Oscar voters in a screening room devoted to the Best Picture category hit the 200 mark on Wednesday, which means that $2.5 million has entered the Academy coffers from films paying $12,500 each to be represented in the screening room.
The members-only Academy Screening Room hit the milestone with the addition of more than a dozen movies this week, including Fisher Stevens’ “Palmer,” Lee Daniels’ “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” John Lee Hancock’s “The Little Things,” the Russo brothers’ “Cherry,” Josh Trank’s “Capone,” the documentary “Coup 53,” the Studio Ghibli animated film “Earwig and the Witch,” the international films “Funny Boy” and “Bacarau” (neither eligible in the Oscars’ Best International Feature Film category) and some off-the-wall selections, including “Snake White – Love Endures” and “Soorarai Pottru.”
Other late additions to the screening room have included “Minari,” “Promising Young Woman,” “The White Tiger” and “Cherry,” which were not added until January.

Today, it seems almost mythical, but 20 years ago last week, three of the top five spots on the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart were occupied by women, with Reba McEntire and the Dixie Chicks at Numbers Four and Two, respectively. Seated at Number One, for a sixth consecutive week, however, was a tune that had been released in October 1999, as the first single — and title cut — from Faith Hill’s fourth LP, Breathe.
While Hill had already scored five Number One solo country hits, from her 1993 debut single...

Marilyn Monroe is clearly pregnant in a collection of extremely rare photographs -- at least that's what the person trying to sell them is saying, but they're not alone. The pics, purporting to show a pregnant Marilyn in 1960, are going up for sale through the memorabilia company, Moments in Time -- where they're hawking the shots for a cool $95,000 ... and pushing the pregnancy angle. The stunning pics were shot by Marilyn's confidant, Frieda Hull, who...

Marilyn Monroe was one of the most glamorous and sought-after stars of her time. John F. Kennedy was, well, the president of the United States. After Marilyn performed a steamy rendition of "Happy Birthday" at the commander-in-chief's 45th birthday party in May 1962, rumors of an affair were propelled - and those rumors have persisted throughout history, even though details of an ongoing relationship between the two are actually pretty scarce.

Updated: Following a couple of Julie London Westerns*, Turner Classic Movies will return to its July 2017 Star of the Month presentations. On July 27, Ronald Colman can be seen in five films from his later years: A Double Life, Random Harvest (1942), The Talk of the Town (1942), The Late George Apley (1947), and The Story of Mankind (1957). The first three titles are among the most important in Colman's long film career. George Cukor's A Double Life earned him his one and only Best Actor Oscar; Mervyn LeRoy's Random Harvest earned him his second Best Actor Oscar nomination; George Stevens' The Talk of the Town was shortlisted for seven Oscars, including Best Picture. All three feature Ronald Colman at his very best. The early 21st century motto of international trendsetters, from Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro and Turkey's Recep Erdogan to Russia's Vladimir Putin and the United States' Donald Trump, seems to be, The world is reality TV and reality TV...

It's official: Confirming reports that have been floating around since the summer, Netflix announced on Tuesday (September 16) that it has given a two-season commitment to the new comedy "Love," which comes from Judd Apatow, among other producers. [Yes, there's an old joke involving Marilyn Monroe's "Let's Make Love" that I want to make here, but I can't remember exactly how the joke went.] Created by Apatow, Paul Rust and Lesley Arfin, "Love" won't premiere on Netflix until 2016, with the 10-episode first season. A 12-episode second season will premiere in 2017. Rust will also star in "Love," along with Gillian Jacobs, playing Gus and Mickey. The comedy looks at modern relationships, following the pair as they "they navigate the exhilarations and humiliations of intimacy, commitment, and other things they were hoping to avoid." Kinda like "You're the Worst." The half-hour comedy is set up at Legendary Television and Apatow Productions. Naturally, everybody involved has a blurb they want to share.

Tim McGraw just came out with a music video featuring his wife, Faith Hill, that lets us once again pretend (if only for a moment) that we're part of the couple's picture-perfect marriage. McGraw's new single, "Meanwhile Back at Mama's," is filled with all the country nostalgia you'd expect from a song about southern breezes and dirt roads, galloping horses and sunny porches - and, of course, copious shots of McGraw and Hill holding hands and harmonizing. Watching the couple on screen sent us down the rabbit hole on YouTube, and we dug up some pretty amazing duet videos -...

George Cukor was one of Hollywood’s most successful and versatile filmmakers: a master of the musical drama, the screwball comedy, the domestic thriller, and the literary adaptation--not to mention a legendary director of actresses, guiding the likes of Greta Garbo, Katharine Hepburn, Joan Crawford, and Judy Garland to career-defining performances. In collaboration with the Locarno Film Festival, New York's Film Society of Lincoln Center is presenting a complete overview--the first in many years in New York--of the director's remarkable career. To drum up anticipation for the series that launches Dec. 13 (go here for the full lineup), Indiewire has been premiering exclusive retrospective trailers over the last few days for a number of the films playing. Today we're pleased to premiere one for one for "Let's Make Love" starring Marilyn Monroe, playing December 25 and 26 at the Film Society.

Jay-z and Beyonce didn't acknowledge their relationship for years, this despite the fact that everyone already knew they were together. Fortunately, hip-hop's royal couple have become increasingly comfortable playing characters in each others' creative endeavors.
Jay-z appears in Beyonce's self-made documentary and gets an awkward shoutout on "Bow Down" ("Don't think I'm just his little wife"), and now Jay's returning the favor by dropping Bey bombs all over "Magna Carta Holy Grail," the album he released Tuesday.
Ahead, glance at every Beyonce reference on the album. The man's got his wife on his mind, from using Beyonce as a sign of success akin to a car ("My past ain't pretty, my lady is, my Mercedes is"), to hinting at an, um, exciting sex life ("I want a wife that f-k me like a prostitute"), to sniping back at Lil Wayne's threats ("wanna kidnap wifey / good luck with that,...

As the 50th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death approaches, Lois Banner argues in this extract from her new book that the star – complex and powerful – had many qualities associated with the women's movement
In one of the most famous photos of the 20th century, Marilyn Monroe stands on a subway grate, trying to hold her skirt down as a gust of wind blows it up, exposing her underpants. The photo was taken in New York on 15 September, 1954, in a photoshoot during the filming of The Seven Year Itch.
Marilyn is a vision in white, suggesting innocence and purity. Yet she exudes sexuality and transcends it; poses for the male gaze and confronts it. August 5 marks the 50th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death. The actress, who was found dead in her home from acute barbiturate poisoning, continues to be remembered for her timeless beauty, charm and painful insecurity.
In her death, Monroe has become an icon and perhaps the best example of how Hollywood destroys its stars. In 1960, Lawrence Schiller (then known as Larry Wolf) photographed Monroe as she went for a swim in the pool -- and emerged naked.
In an adaptation of Schiller's soon-to-be released memoir, "Marilyn & Me", Vanity Fair reveals never before published photos from the star's last photo shoot. The images offer a peek into the friendship that developed between Schiller and Monroe while he photographed her in 1960 and 1962 on the sets of "Let's Make Love" and the unfinished feature "Something's Got to Give," the last film she worked on.

Hal Kanter (see photo), creator of the groundbreaking television series Julia, starring Diahann Carroll (photo) as a nurse, died Sunday, Nov. 6, of complications from pneumonia at Encino Hospital in the Los Angeles suburb of Encino. Kanter was 92. Julia (1968-71) marked the first time a black actress had an important role in an American television series playing something other than a maid (e.g., Ethel Waters and Louise Beavers in the 1950s series Beulah). As quoted in the Los Angeles Times obit, Kanter said he didn't want to make profound political statements with each Julia episode. But political statements were made all the same, as Kanter explained: There is a fallout of social comment. Every week we see a black child playing with a white child with complete acceptance and without incident. More Monroe Movie Gowns To Go Under The Hammer

Dresses Marilyn Monroe wore in films like Bus Stop and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes are to be auctioned off as part of movie veteran Debbie Reynolds' second collection sale.
The iconic white dress Monroe wore in The Seven Year Itch was a big seller at a Reynolds' Profiles in History event earlier this year when it shattered records for a film costume sold at auction, and now more of the actress' costumes are to be sold.
The second part of the auction will feature four Monroe gowns from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Bus Stop, Niagara and Let's Make Love.
The items include a aubergine grey evening dress and Bolero jacket, designed by William Travilla, which the actress wore in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The two-piece outfit is expected to fetch upwards of $150,000 (£93,750).
A second Travilla dress, which the actress wore for her performance of That Old Black Magic in Bus Stop, is expected to sell for between $200,000 (£125,000) and $300,000 (£187,500).
Also going under the hammer are Monroe's Dorothy Jeakins dress from Niagara and the Jeakins strapless pale green pleated silk empire gown with a rhinestone trim the actress wore in for Let's Make Love.

"Peroxide – that's all it is," says a long-suffering hairdresser working for Marilyn Monroe as she takes up residence in the Beverly Hills Hotel while shooting Let's Make Love. In an adjoining room, her husband, Arthur Miller, is typing out the screenplay for The Misfits; over the corridor, that other big-screen blonde, Simone Signoret, is accompanying her husband, and Monroe's co-star, Yves Montand.
In Sue Glover's new bio-drama, Monroe is all too aware that peroxide is all it is. "I've gotten over acting with my hair," she says before one of her many bouts of self-doubt, as she struggles to feel the equal of her intellectual husband and a match for the European sophistication of Signoret. Yes, she reads Shakespeare for pleasure, but there's a big part of Norma Jeane that loves to play the bubbly good-time girl. This was the first time I've seen a film featuring Marilyn Monroe. Let's cut the embellishments: the film is certainly worth your time if you're into musicals (which I'm not). Other than that, Let's Make Love's romance story between the two leading characters suffers from a serious lack of elaboration.
Jean-Marc Clément (Yves Montand) is a billionaire. His PR specialist (Tony Randall) apprised Jean-Marc that according to an article in Variety (my reaction: it's that old??!!?), he'll be parodied in an upcoming theatre production. By going to the production's rehearsal, Jean Marc snags a role as... himself. Furthermore, the show's cast didn't recognize him and this is why he goes around by using another name and by pretending that he's not a billionaire. However, Jean-Marc has a crush on Amanda Dell (Marilyn Monroe), his co-star. Will improving his stage skills make him win Amanda's affection?
Let's say straightforwardly that...

Screen legend Marilyn Monroe will be the subject of a new dance musical set to light up London's West End. The show's limited run will kick off in June in the British capital's Apollo theatre.

Hagen, who played trombone with the Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey orchestras, composed the jazz standard Harlem Nocturne. Written in 1939 for big-band leader Ray Noble, the tune went on to be recorded by Les Brown, Glenn Miller, Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Ray Anthony and many other bands.

Actor Tony Randall, the stage, screen and television actor best known as fussy Felix Unger on the 70s sitcom The Odd Couple, died in New York in his sleep Monday night after complications from a long illness; he was 84. An actor who specialized in playing comedic sidekicks and best friends, Randall first gained prominence onscreen by reprising his Broadway starring role in Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? in 1957. That film was followed two years later by his scene-stealing turn in Pillow Talk opposite Rock Hudson and Doris Day, the first of many supporting romantic comedy roles for which he would become best known (others included Let's Make Love, Lover Come Back and Send Me No Flowers), although he was also an effective and versatile lead in 7 Faces of Dr. Lao. Randall seamlessly transitioned to television in 1970 with The Odd Couple, based on the hit Neil Simon play, in which he was paired with Jack Klugman, who played the messy Oscar Madison; the show ran for five years and won both actors Emmy Awards for their roles. Innumerable television appearances followed, most notably The Tony Randall Show (1976-78) and Love, Sidney (1981-83), a pioneering sitcom in which his character's homosexuality was implied but never stated. Randall turned most of his energy to the stage in his later career, founding the non-profit National Actors Theatre in 1991, starring in and directing a number of the company's productions. The actor made a brief return to the screen last year in Down with Love, an homage to the Rock Hudson-Doris Day films in which he co-starred. Randall is survived by his wife Heather Harlan Randall . who was fifty years younger and made him a father for the first time at 77 . and their two children, a 7 year-old daughter and a 5 year-old son. --Prepared by IMDb staff...
