‘Rust’, Western With A Tragic Past, Honors Work Of Slain Cinematographer, Proceeds Will Go To Her Family – Specialty Preview
Image
Rust, the indie Western with a tragic backstory, is now out at at some 115 theaters through Falling Forward Films, as well as on PVOD. The release comes well over three years since the film’s cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed by a bullet from Alec Baldwin‘s gun on the New Mexico film set.

An on-again-off-again involuntary manslaughter criminal case against the producer and star was put to rest last December. Multiple civil suits related to the shooting remain in the courts in California and New Mexico. A jury found Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer for the production, guilty of involuntary manslaughter for the October 2021 incident and she was sentenced to 16 months in prison.

Amid all that, the movie itself has taken a back seat, until now. Deadline’s review calls the release “bittersweet” but notes “the exceptional cinematography of Hutchins, as well as Bianca Cline, who came in to film the remaining scenes.

Image
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino is certainly keeping busy in Hollywood these days. Following the recent close-proximity releases of Challengers and Queer, it was announced he'd be tackling a remake of American Psycho for Lionsgate. And the actor has now teased how After the Hunt will "make people really uncomfortable."

In addition to Bonjour Tristesse hitting the masses this week, Sevigny steals the show in Mubi's recent film release, Magic Farm, from writer-director Amalia Ulman. ‘Bonjour Tristesse’ Review: Durga Chew-Bose Lends a Timeless Story a Newfangled Tenor
Image
In Bonjour Tristesse—a modern retelling of Françoise Sagan’s 1954 novella of the same name—the enigmatic fashionista Ann (Chloe Sevigny) discovers a long-held craving just as it’s satisfied by her lover, Raymond (Claes Bang). She describes the feeling as “fizzy,” an adjective that captures the quietly galvanic sensations permeating Durga Chew-Bose’s stringent and striking directorial debut. The interaction also illustrates the inflamed senses of self-awareness that define the film’s characters, who relentlessly observe, analyze, and diagnose each other’s behaviors in ways that invariably reflect back on themselves.

The wealthy, womanizing Raymond enjoys a carefree life in the French Riviera with his stepdaughter, Cécile (Lily McInerny), whose mother died years before. The two have always kept each other company—even solitaire is a multiplayer game for them—and this closeness remains unchallenged when Raymond takes up with the beautiful Elsa (Nailia Harzoune), whose warmth grounds the...

First Look at Denzel Washington in Spike Lee's 'Highest 2 Lowest' Released
Image
A new image from Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest, a remake of Akira Kurosawa's classic crime thriller High and Low, offers a first look at Denzel Washington's character. He is pictured on the subway, wearing a hooded jacket, a New York Yankees cap, and sunglasses. It was previously revealed that Washington would be playing a new version of Toshiro Mifune's character, Kingo Gondo, from the 1963 Japanese movie. However, instead of being a shoemaker, he will play "a music mogul with his own label and his reputation as the best ears in the business."

The latest look at Highest 2 Lowest (shared below) comes shortly after Lee shared a snap of the movie's lead actor, A$AP Rocky, in what appeared to be an orange prison jumpsuit. It's unclear exactly what character Rocky plays, though his name has been identified as Yung Felon, which is fitting since he looks...

Eva Longoria Wows in Killer Heels and Figure-Flattering Looks at Disney’s New Film Tour

Eva Longoria had some serious style game when she hit the media circuit to promote her upcoming movie, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip.

The Alto Knights Review — Double the De Niro, Double the Disappointment
Image
A part of me feels protective of the filmmaking team behind The Alto Knights. For one, Barry Levinson has had a historic and varied career, directing everything from Good Morning, Vietnam to Bugsy and his best collaboration with Robert De Niro, Wag the Dog. This marks his fourth film with the legendary actor, but unfortunately, it is more of a disappointment—much like Sleepers, What Just Happened, and The Wizard of Lies.

Another factor is De Niro’s third collaboration with Nicholas Pileggi, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of Goodfellas and Casino (he also executive produced The Irishman). Pileggi lived it. De Niro brings his characters to life. However, many have pointed out that the film is full of crime tropes as if this is the first time it’s happened. I mean, how else do they become them in the first place?

Gayle King called out by Joy Behar for space trip: ‘Why is she doing it?’
Joy Behar
Joy Behar called out fellow TV personality Gayle King over her decision to travel into space.

CBS Mornings revealed several weeks ago that Gayle plans to board a historic Blue Origin New Shepard mission to space, featuring an all-female crew.

Other women traveling with Gayle include singer Katy Perry, NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and philanthropist and author Lauren Sanchez.

Sanchez is also the fiancee of Amazon and Blue Origin founder, Jeff Bezos. Many fans have criticized Gayle for her participation in Bezos’s upcoming mission to space.

The CBS Mornings star also shared with co-stars and viewers that she is terrified of traveling into space on a rocket.

Based on recent remarks, The View’s Behar questioned why Gayle chose to go under the circumstances.

Steven Yeun
Steven Yeun’s Top 10 Criterion Favourites
Steven Yeun
If Steven Yeun had decided to pursue law or medical science rather than acting, the cinematic world would have missed out on a gem of an actor. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Yeun is an American actor who has delivered acclaimed performances in the popular television series The Walking Dead, Bong Joon-ho’s Okja, and Lee Chang-dong’s Burning. He is the first Asian American actor to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. Most recently, he reunited with Bong Joon-ho for his latest sci-fi satire Mickey 17.

With such a list of great honors, it’s undoubted that Yeun is one of the best actors in the film industry. Apart from being a great actor, his script choice is also commendable. The actor discussed his Criterion favorites,...

Even in This Ridiculously Scary Kids’ Adventure Classic, Robin Williams Offered So Much More Than Laughs
Image
It’s hard to overstate what a massive cultural sensation Robin Williamswas in the 1990s, as he had transcended all expectations to become one of the industry’s most reliable actors. Despite getting his start on the sitcom Mork & Mindy and playing sold-out comedy shows around the nation, Williams would prove himself as an actor by starring in family-friendly hits, comedy sensations, and Oscar-nominated dramedies. Williams was the type of star who could be relied upon to take risks, even when the results were as disastrous as Flubber or Jack. Williams lent his talents to the groundbreaking fantasy adventure film Jumanji, a film that may have been too terrifying for children had it not been for his unique comedic charm.

Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes address losing ‘dream job’ amid GMA shakeup
Amy Robach at an event for Stand by Me (1986)
Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes called their GMA3 co-hosting gig a “dream job” they wouldn’t ever want to leave.

They shared their thoughts about the situation at their former employer, ABC News, amid a shakeup that included dozens of layoffs for Good Morning America and GMA3.

Along with that, reports indicated that the production units for GMA and GMA3 would merge.

During an episode of the Amy and T.J. Podcast this week, the couple said the recent layoffs affected many of the staff they “loved” and “worked with daily” at GMA3.

Remarks from insiders suggested that some individuals blamed Amy and T.J. for ruining GMA3, which ultimately brought these layoffs and changes.

As Amy and T.J. discussed the recent shakeup, Amy also explained that the show has been “painful” to watch since their departure.

Michael Strahan shares surprising detail about his past with GMA co-stars
Image
Michael Strahan surprised his co-stars and viewers with a detail about his past they may not have realized.

During Good Morning America this week, Michael appeared alongside co-anchors Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos.

Their co-star Will Reeve was also seated with them for a segment and had a question for Michael.

“Hey, you ever go to your high school reunion?” he asked.

“Nope,” Michael replied, quickly shutting his co-star down during the funny moment.

“Ok. Well, tough start,” Will said as Robin and George began laughing with others in the GMA studio.

Michael admitted to a surprising detail about his high school

“I graduated with a class of two. That’s not very cool. There’s two of us there,” Michael said as everyone continued laughing over his remarks.

“‘How are you?’ ‘How are you?’ Ok, let’s go home,” he said, mimicking what his high school reunion would’ve been like.

How did you get involved in Popeye the Slayer Man and why was this a project you wanted to be a part of?

15 Best Vietnam War Movies, Ranked
Image
War movies concerning the Vietnam War encompass the specific traits that make them easily distinguishable from other films within the war genre. The majority of Golden Era war movies, which heavily depicted World War II, feature propagandistic angles and hero-worshipping sentiments that reflected the nation's attitudes at the time. While World War II movies may dominate the genre, there are plenty of stunning films about the Vietnam War, from the unconventional Good Morning, Vietnam to the landmark Apocalypse Now.

Vietnam War movies are more reflective of the counter-culture era, containing anti-establishment views, addressing the psychological effects war has on soldiers, and preaching anti-war themes. Internationally, countries such as Hong Kong have produced important works about the Vietnam War that provide an added perspective toward fully understanding the implications of the conflict worldwide. Some of the best movies about the Vietnam War rank among cinema's greatest war films, and many publications...

Amy Robach at an event for Stand by Me (1986)
Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes blamed for ‘ruining’ GMA3 and causing ‘nightmare’ layoffs
Amy Robach at an event for Stand by Me (1986)
Criticism has landed on former Good Morning America and GMA3 co-stars Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes for ruining the show they once co-hosted.

On Wednesday, Monsters and Critics reported on the announcement that ABC News Group would merge the programs into one production unit and that GMA layoffs would arrive for staffers in the shakeup.

As the Walt Disney Co. and ABC News layoffs have arrived, sources suggest that Robach and Holmes caused the issues with GMA3.

They co-hosted the afternoon program in 2020, with Robach initially hosting Pandemic: What You Need to Know.

Holmes joined Robach as a co-anchor that September, and ABC News rebranded the GMA3 logo to connect it more with Good Morning America.

But the network ultimately took the duo off the air after a media outlet exposed their private relationship, which some deemed as a scandalous extramarital affair at the time due to both having marriages.

Disney Cuts Nearly 200 Jobs at ABC News and Entertainment Networks
Image
The Walt Disney Co. is slashing just under 200 jobs at ABC News and at its Disney Entertainment Networks division as the traditional TV business continues to face economic headwinds, a source familiar with the decision tells The Hollywood Reporter. The cuts represented about 6 percent of the division’s workforce.

ABC News will be hit particularly hard, with the data-driven digital news brand 538 being shuttered, teams from Nightline and 20/20 being consolidated, and all three hours of Good Morning America moving under the same top producer, Simone Swink. The company is also merging its digital and social operations.

Disney’s entertainment networks will see cuts in program planning and scheduling, according to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the cuts there. Disney’s channels include FX and Freeform. The newsletter Status first reported the looming cuts at ABC News.

ABC News last saw job cuts last fall, when around 75 jobs were eliminated.

Peter Engel, ‘Saved by the Bell’ Producer, Dies at 88
Image
Peter Engel, who executive produced Saved by the Bell and a host of other teen sitcoms for NBC, died Tuesday at his home in Santa Monica, his son Stephen David Engel announced. He was 88.

The show that became Saved by the Bell began life as Good Morning, Miss Bliss on Disney Channel. The series at the time focused on Hayley Mills, who played the title character, and her students at an Indianapolis junior high school. That show lasted only one season, but after a retooling (and change in setting to Southern California), the NBC-produced show was relaunched as Saved by the Bell and became both a staple of NBC’s Saturday lineup from 1989-93 and a touchstone show for Gen X and millennial viewers.

The show helped launch the careers of its young cast — Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen, Mario Lopez, Elizabeth Berkley, Dustin Diamond and Lark Voorhies — and spawned a...

Image
Peter Engel, who executive produced Saved by the Bell, its spinoffs and 2020 reboot, Last Comic Standing and many other series, died Tuesday at his Santa Monica home. He was 88. His family confirmed the news to Deadline but did not provide a cause of death.

Engel exec-produced more than 1,000 hours of TV during a 40-year career, mostly for NBC as part of a long-term partnership. His credits also include scores of episodes of City Guys and Malibu CA — both of which he also created — along with Hang Time, USA High, California Dreams, How to Survive a Marriage and others.

He also wrote more than 100 episodes of City Guys, nearly as many of USA High and 50-plus for Malibu CA.

Engel penned a dozen episodes of teen sitcom Saved by the Bell, which NBC aired mostly on Saturday mornings from 1989-93. The popular show helped launch the careers of such stars as Mark-Paul Gosselaar,...

CBS News Names Tom Cibrowski President and Executive Editor
Image
CBS News has named Tom Cibrowski president and executive editor, tapping an ABC News veteran to lead the news division at a critical moment.

Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of CBS News and Television Stations and CBS Media Ventures, announced Cibrowski’s hiring Thursday morning. Cibrowski succeeds Adrienne Roark, the former CBS News president of newsgathering, who left for a job at Tegna earlier this month.

Cibrowski, however, will have a wider purview. Roark led newsgathering and editorial, but McMahon herself oversaw some key shows. Cibrowski will run all CBS News shows, as well as newsgathering and reporting units.

“Tom brings three decades of experience in broadcast journalism to CBS News, some of it here at CBS, where he served as a broadcast producer at The Early Show,” McMahon wrote in a memo to staff. “Everything he does is marked by a deep understanding of the news landscape, and he...

Good Morning (1959)
Robin Roberts and Michael Strahan return to GMA amid co-star’s big achievement
Good Morning (1959)
Viewers were likely surprised during the first episode of this week’s Good Morning, as the trio of regular hosts was absent.

Instead of Robin Roberts, Michael Strahan, and George Stephanopoulos, three replacements were at the GMA desk.

They included familiar faces, Gio Benitez, Rebecca Jarvis, and Linsey Davis, who filled in admirably.

And Robin, George, and Michael returned just a day later, showing up on Tuesday’s episode.

The usual trio returned in time to congratulate and celebrate one of their co-stars, Will Reeve.

Reeve claimed a major award during the weekend and received a congratulatory hug from Michael before telling his co-stars how it felt to be on stage with stars before him.

GMA stars celebrated Reeve’s accomplishment

In a behind-the-scenes GMA clip, Reeve received a big hug from the football legend. Co-stars Robin, George, and Lara Spencer applauded him for winning the 78th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs).

When Mark Ruffalo Spoiled Infinity War & Literally Scared The Cast To Death
Image
Did Mark Ruffalo spoil Avengers: Infinity War? (Photo Credit – Facebook)

While chatting with Don Cheadle on Good Morning America at the D23 Expo, he casually dropped, “In this next one, ha — everybody dies!” He tried to backpedal mid-sentence, attempting to say “half” instead. But the damage was done.

Cheadle’s reaction was pure panic. A mix of shock, disbelief, and silent pleading that Marvel’s snipers weren’t already locking in on them. His face alone screamed, Dude, what have you done? But Ruffalo just sat there, realizing in real time that he may have just spoiled 10 years of Marvel storytelling in under five seconds.

At the time, fans weren’t sure if this was a legit spoiler or a playful misdirection. Marvel actors were trained to dodge questions like they were in The Matrix. Plus, Tom Holland had already earned a reputation as Marvel’s resident spoiler machine. Maybe Ruffalo was just messing around,...
