When folks say they love winter, typically they refer to the earliest months of the season, with winter beginning on Dec. 21 in the northern hemisphere. In those early days of holiday cheer, there is something familiar and comforting about the cold. But eventually the bright lights go away, and the wind howls louder. Eventually, all you’re left with is icy darkness.
Perhaps that’s why so many of the best horror movies are set during the winter season! Utilizing folks’ fear of barren bleakness, and the tedium of being trapped inside becoming lethal, filmmakers who run the gamut from Stanley Kubrick to John Carpenter have imprinted our worst nightmares onto the snow. Below is a list of their frozen works.

Fondly remembered as a permanent resident on all-night movie channels, this patchwork concoction has just enough ‘good stuff’ to qualify as a fun monster show. Jim Davis’s stock-footage safari arrives just in time to be irrelevant to the fate of the title monsters; some good actors are along for what amounts to a picnic in Griffith Park’s Bronson Caverns. There’s still not a full accounting of who did what, special effects-wise. But Hey! The picture has stop-motion animation, which always guarantees viewer interest.

CineSavant reaches back to a U.K. disc released in 2014, because the subject is (what else) a semi-obscure science fiction effort. Favorite John Neville stars as a scientist opposite newcomer Gabriella Licudi, a beauty who may be an invader from outer space. This is the one with the teardrops that burn; not having seen it since 1966 or so, evaluating a ‘new’ Blu was an imperative. The main takeaway is that it’s awfully small-scale and the fantastic content is almost entirely confined to dialogue. But the performances are exemplary and actress Jean Marsh is terrific.

The U.K.’s Network Distributing has sealed a deal with iconic British horror label Hammer Films to form Hammer Studios Ltd.
Network’s managing director Tim Beddows and financial director Jonathan Lack and Hammer CEO Simon Oakes will head the new company.
The new entity will manage and control Hammer’s interests in its vast library of content such as “The Woman in Black” (2012), “Let Me In” (2010), “Dracula” (1958), “The Abominable Snowman” (1957) and “The Quatermass Experiment” (1953). Hammer Studios will invest substantially both in restoration and new production development from both its owned and newly created IP.
The restoration plans are in keeping with Network’s ethos, as it is a well-known brand for film aficionados, mining the vaults of TV companies and film studios since 1997, unearthing cult programs and films and making them available on home video and digital formats.

Just under the top echelon of British sci-fi lurks this well-produced, absorbing ‘expedition to terror!’ that surprises us by paying off on an intellectual plane. After building his monster but before defeating Dracula, Peter Cushing found himself in a real fix on a snowy mountain peak. Sure, the race of enormous Yeti are shiver-inducing, but Cushing must also withstand the mind games of a suspiciously solicitous Tibetan Lhama, and a piratical double-cross by an American huckster who goes by the deceptive name, ‘Friend.’

What ought to be appreciated as one of the most prescient of 1950s suspense films holds a place among the best science fiction movies ever — and it formed a style template for a thousand paranoid spy thrillers to follow. Val Guest pares Nigel Kneale’s fantastic storyline down to its essentials, making his scientist-hero the perfect secret agent to confront a sinister techno-political conspiracy… from outer space.

The Yeti. Eerie. Mysterious. Does it exist? Sure does, according to this unsung Hammer classic from Nigel Kneale and Val Guest which was tossed off on double bills in America with an especially obtuse ad campaign. The first question you are probably asking is “Do we need another book about Hammer films?” Speaking as someone whose Hammer shelf is already groaning with the weight of so many volumes on the company, the answer, as far as Hammer Complete is concerned, is “Absolutely.” This book, coming in at nearly 1000 pages, is a lifetime achievement for journalist Howard Maxford, and one that deserves immense praise. Unlike other books which might focus specifically on the horror films, or the posters, or the ups and downs of the company itself, here Maxford has attempted to provide a complete encyclopedia of everything and everyone connected to Hammer. From Temple Abady (who appeared in Never Look Back in 1952) and The Abominable Snowman (1957) to Murial Zillah and Marc Zuber, no Hammer stone has been left unturned or contributor ignored.

In the midst of wintertime doldrums, we compile a list of the 16 Best Winter Horror Movies to keep you warm with dread.
A New Year has come and the last of the holiday decorations have been stored away. Yet even if we have turned the page to what is hopefully a bright, shiny new 2018, the fact remains that if you live anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line, things are hardly warming up. In fact, winter is just entering its deepest and scariest throes with a chill that risks spreading to your soul, and there’s nary a Christmas light in sight for comfort. Perhaps that’s why now ‘tis the real season for a certain kind of horror movie. One so grim that the quiet, lingering dread in its backdrop can be as all-encompassing as a 10-foot snowfall.

While Hammer achieved international fame (and notoriety) for their colorful and bloody adaptation of Gothic classics, their first foray into the horror genre was not The Curse of Frankenstein. Just a few months before that, the studio released another kind of monster flick—also starring Peter Cushing—called The Abominable Snowman. It sounds cheesy, without doubt, but what could have been a silly man-in-rubber-suit schlock picture becomes something just as chilling as its location. It affects something of the atmosphere that Algernon Blackwood employs in his cosmic horror stories.
As discussed in a Forbidden Tomes last year, Algernon Blackwood revolutionized the genre with sweeping tales of environmental horror—vast, incomprehensible spirits of nature threatening puny mankind. His tales evoke a special kind of dread, the sort that rises as you listen to the wind rock your house’s flimsy walls at night. Many of his stories draw from his personal experience as an adventurer,...

Fans of horror literature have likely encountered Adam Nevill’s work. His novel The Ritual, a combination of occult fantasy and survival horror, has been ripe for adaptation since its release the better part of a decade ago. Few modern directors are better suited for the job than David Bruckner, the man behind the infamous surgery segment in Southbound. When it premiered in Tiff’s Midnight Madness section, early reactions gave no indication that Bruckner had returned to the feature scene with a debut of mythical power, but his faithful adaptation of Nevill’s novel revives the folk horror sub-genre to give us one of the year’s most terrifying films.
The setup is deceptively simple, with four friends embarking on a hiking trip through Sweden in honor of their deceased fifth member. When one of them twists an ankle, they make a mistake that may cause a few eye-rolls:...

It’s a wonder movie from the 1930s, a political fantasy that imagines a Utopia of peace and kindness hidden away in a distant mountain range — or in our daydreams. Sony’s new restoration is indeed impressive. Ronald Colman is seduced by a vision of a non-sectarian Heaven on Earth, while Savant indulges his anti-Frank Capra grumblings in his admiring but hesitant review essay.

You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone more attractive to an anglophile. With gaunt, angular features and a proper aristocratic accent, Peter Cushing could just as easily sell you a first-edition Charles Dickens novel as he could read a line of dialogue. Inserting those proper English characteristics into tales of bloodthirsty creatures is part of what makes Hammer films so entertaining. In the case of Val Guest’s 1957 creature feature, The Abominable Snowman, those admirable characteristics are also integral parts of the plot.
The Abominable Snowman follows Dr. John Rollason (Peter Cushing) on a botanical expedition in the Himalayas. On his journey, Rollason is approached by Dr. Tom Friend (Forrest Tucker) who, along with Ed Shelley (Robert Brown), Andrew McNee (Michael Brill), and Kusang (Wolfe Morris), is in search of the mythical Yeti that is claimed to inhabit the mountain. Rollason’s wife, Helen (Maureen Connell), is convinced that he...

Buddy the Elf, Ebenezer Scrooge and Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer are all holiday mainstays, but some of the lesser-known characters in their famous Christmas films are just as pivotal. We channeled our festive sides and found seven merry costars who could use a little extra love this season.
1. Max in Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
Though he has no lines, Max steals the show with his unwavering loyalty to the Grinch. If you didn’t dissolve into a pile of feels upon the seeing the Grinch’s change of heart, then you definitely melted when you saw Cindy Lou...

Jack Black plays children’s horror writer Rl Stine in a scrappy yarn that brings a horde of his creepiest ghouls together
Plans for a film based on Rl Stine’s bestselling spooky kids’ books date back to 1998 (a Canadian TV series ran from 1995) when Tim Burton was set to produce a big-screen adaptation. Nearly two decades later we finally have this FX-heavy Poltergeist-y romp. Ed Wood writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski take “story” credit on a yarn that casts Jack Black as Stine, and finds the multiple demons of his various bestsellers coming to life when new neighbour Zach (Dylan Minnette) unwittingly raids his personal library.
It’s a cute device, enabling Night of the Living Dummy’s titular creep, Slappy, to join the diminutive ghouls from Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes, The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena and a host of other plants and zombies in an attack on sleepy Madison,...

The Yeti attack at Covent Garden in recently recovered Doctor Who episode, The Web Of Fear, is a masterwork. Here's why...
The Web Of Fear was commissioned after a positive response to The Abominable Snowmen by then Story Editor (soon-to-be Producer) Peter Bryant, with the intention that it would close out Doctor Who’s fifth season. Rewrites for Fury From The Deep resulted in it becoming the penultimate story (one of many variables that resulted in Nicholas Courtney playing the role of Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart). Previously available as an audio soundtrack narrated by Fraser Hines, the film of The Web Of Fear was returned to the BBC archives in 2013.

From Quatermass to The Year Of The Sex Olympics, the voice of classic British screenwriter Nigel Kneale is still resonant and exciting...
Conflict drives drama. What people want and how they set out to get it makes for the best entertainment: Chief Brody wants to make Amity Island a safe place for his kids; Indiana Jones wants to find the Ark of the Covenant; Mark Watney wants to survive on Mars, A giant shark, a bunch of Nazis, and a planet without an atmosphere respectively stand in their way.
But conflict isn't only a device from which to hang big action sequences. The tension between ideas can make for brilliant drama - the kind of film and television that you think about for years afterwards - and one of the best screenwriters for this conflict of ideas was Nigel Kneale.

Curious about all those Region B Hammer Blu-rays from overseas, the ones requiring a region-free player? As a public service, Savant has solicited an expert opinion (you'll have to take my word for that) of a film restoration/transfer specialist who is also an informed fan of the filmic output of the little horror studio at Bray. I know, real Hammer fans buy first and worry about quality later, but this little guide might be of help to the rest of us budget-conscious collectors.
A 'Guest' article Written by a trusted Savant correspondent.
(Note: I receive plenty of emails asking for advice about the quality of Region B Blu-rays, most of which I don't see. I have access to industry people qualified to compare and judge the discs, but they stay off the record, because their employers forbid them to go online with their opinions. It's 1965 all over again... with a brand-new episode of Thunderbirds coming soon.
To mark the 50th anniversary of Gerry Anderson's classic series, three new episodes have been produced, using the original's 'Supermarionation' techniques - and now we have a teaser for the first instalment, 'The Abominable Snowman'.
The new shows uses vocals recorded by the original Thunderbirds voice cast back in the '60s, for a series of audio productions.
Director Stephen La Rivière used Kickstarter to fund the new productions, which adds classic puppet visuals to the old recordings - and it looks pretty darn authentic to us.
3,378 backers have pledged £218,412 to help bring the project to life - and funding is the only way that fans will be able to watch the new episodes, receiving a DVD / Blu-ray of the finished product.

“Goosebumps” could be the next “Jumanji,” if the first trailer for the live-action adventure movie starring Jack Black is any indication. Black stars as R.L. Stine, the author behind the series of popular young adult horror novels that are the basis for the movie. Much like the board game came to life in 1995 when Robin Williams and company rolled the dice in “Jumanji,” the monsters in Stine’s books escape when the original manuscripts are opened. The first creature to escape from the pages is the eponymous monster from Stine’s “The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena.” But Stine’s got bigger problems.

Hammer Films produced plenty of amazing horror Movies, but we take a look at the ones the studio abandoned.
Redder than red blood, international ingénues with deep cleavage, lush settings, elaborate costumes and sets, these are just some of the aspects people think of when they remember Hammer Films and the horrors the studio constructed.
Filmed in eye popping color, Hammer’s horror movies brought the Universal pantheon of monsters to life like never before, adding elements of sensual eroticism and (for the age) intense violence to truly update the clunky creatures of yore. Christopher Lee, Ralph Bates, Peter Cushing, Michael Gough, Ingrid Pitt, Valerie Leon, David Prowse, and Patrick Troughton filled filmgoers with loathing and desire in Hammer’s world famous gothic films. Hammer often produced massive scale features on shoestring budgets, relying on recycled costumes and sets and the skill of their players to bring...

Humankind’s collision with otherworldly life forms can make for unforgettable cinema.
This article will highlight the best of live-action human vs. alien films. The creatures may be from other planets or may be non-demonic entities from other dimensions.
Excluded from consideration were giant monster films as the diakaiju genre would make a great subject for separate articles.
Readers looking for “friendly alien” films such as The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), It Came from Outer Space (1953) and the comically overrated Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) are advised to keep watching the skies because they won’t find them here.
Film writing being the game of knowledge filtered through personal taste that it is, some readers’ subgenre favorites might not have made the list such as War of the Worlds (1953) and 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957).
Now let’s take a chronological look at the cinema’s best battles between Us and Them.

First built in 1963 in Panama City, Florida, the Miracle Strip Amusement Park was a small park across the street from the beach, whose claim to fame was the Starliner wooden roller coaster, the first roller coaster in Florida and the only ride to have existed throughout the park's duration. The park was segregated until the late 1960s, which is about when expansion on the park started, and more rides were added throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
The Miracle Strip Amusement Park closed in September 2004, due to waning attendance and increased expenses. Many of the existing rides were sold off to other amusement parks. Those that remained turned into the terrifyingly beautiful abandoned constructions you see here.

Last week we learned that Hammer Films is prepping a modern day take on their 1957 film The Abominable Snowman, which they described in a press release as a modern twist on the original film.
So is it a remake? A reimagining? A reboot?! I turn the tables over to Hammer for more of an explanation!
Hammer's CEO Simon Oakes and producer Ben Holden opened up about the film with Empire, revealing details about what we can expect from it. "We're not remaking the Val Guest film," says Holden. "We're starting again from scratch, but the conversation began because that creature or that myth is part of the Hammer library or lexicon, and we wanted to develop something around it."
"Our version of The Abominable Snowman will have something of the uncanny about it," continues Oakes, "and it'll have the mythology and all the big [original writer] Nigel Kneale ideas of man and beast and nature.

You may have seen Thursday's news that the recently-revivified Hammer have been digging into their vaults again, emerging with a plan for a new version of 1957's The Abominable Snowman. Empire happened to be on other Hammer business on the day of the announcement, so we were well-placed to score some further details from Hammer CEO Simon Oakes and producer Ben Holden. "We're very excited about it," enthuses Oakes. "Inevitably somebody not understanding the history and mythology of it will see a word like 'abominable' and take the piss, but more fool them!"The new version of the Yeti story will see an illegal Himalayan expedition accidentally awakening the dangerous beasts, risking almost certain death. "We're not remaking the Val Guest film," explains Holden. Sneak Peek a full episode of "In Search Of...The Abominable Snowman" on the news that Simon Oakes, President, CEO of Hammer will produce an updated version of the 1957 feature "The Abominable Snowman".
"...in this modern take on the 'Yeti' myth, a scientific expedition's illegal assent up an unclimbed peak of one of the world's most formidable mountains accidentally awakens an ancient creature that could spell a certain end for them all..."
The new screenplay by Matthew Read ("Hammer of the Gods") and Jon Croker ("The Woman In Black: Angel of Death") will put a 'modern twist' on the original feature.
"The success of 'Let Me In' and 'The Woman In Black' has shown that there is an appetite for quality horror films," said Oakes.
"So it is exciting to draw on Hammer’s unparalleled source material in this genre which can be reimagined and updated for a new audience.

Hammer has announced that they will be producing a remake of their 1957 film, The Abominable Snowman.
The movie will be a modern take on the Yeti legend, and in the story "a scientific expedition’s illegal assent up an unclimbed peak of one of the World’s most formidable mountains accidentally awakens an ancient creature that could spell a certain end for them all."
The screenplay is being written by Matthew Read (Pusher, Hammer of the Gods) and Jon Croker (The Woman In Black: Angel of Death, Desert Dancer). President and CEO of Hammer Simon Oakes had this to say in a statement,
"The success of Let Me In and The Woman In Black has shown that there is an appetite for quality horror films so it is exciting to draw on Hammer’s unparalleled source material in this genre which can be reimagined and updated for a new audience.

High up on the mountaintops of the Himalayas and the snow-covered recesses of our movie libraries sits The Abominable Snowman, the 1957 monster mythic starring the legendary yeti terrorizing any explorer that dared to traverse its home. Much like the titular man-beast of the mountain shadows, the fascination with the snowman has yet to die, which is why British horror label Hammer and producer Ben Holden are rebooting the film for a new generation. Hammer, which owns the rights to the original, is looking to add a modern, dark spin on the campy classic, which starred Forrest Tucker, Peter Cushing, and Maureen Connell as a team of very misguided explorers. While the expedition in the original had the intention of finding the monster of the mountain, the reboot, written by Matthew Read (Pusher) and Jon Croker (Angel of Death), is going in a more sinister path; this time around, an illegal expedition ascends an unclimbed peak on a...
