Seven months after “Top Gun: Maverick” first hit theaters, the blockbuster Tom Cruise sequel is finally coming to the Paramount+ streaming service. But Paramount+ Chief Programming Officer Tanya Giles says the theatrical window for “Maverick” and all other new release Paramount Pictures films in 2022 actually benefited the streaming service, as Paramount+ found ways to engage subscribers when new releases were in theaters.
Interest in streaming the original “Top Gun” on Paramount+ soared 500 when “Maverick” came out, Giles said, and similarly the releases of “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” and “Jackass Forever” in theaters saw massive upticks in activity on “Sonic 1” and the “Jackass” library on Paramount+.
“I think we have a general rule of thumb of a fast-follow and we’ve become more bullish in our release strategy,” Giles, a Viacom veteran since 1997 who got her start as a senior analyst at Nickelodeon, told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View.

“Top Gun: Maverick” features one of the best edge-of-your-seat action sequences of the year as Tom Cruise’s Maverick takes the supersonic Darkstar aircraft on an unauthorized test flight, pushing it to reach a speed of Mach 10.
Production designer Jeremy Hindle worked closely with concept designer Daniel Simon to come up with a mockup of the aircraft that he says was “authentic and as real as possible.”
“We went through 47 versions before landing on the final design and, when completed, it was an enormous 70 feet long,” Hindle says.
Cruise was fully committed to doing his stunts, and director Joseph Kosinski was adamant about doing as much in-camera action as possible. Hindle too was adamant about building the entire jet without using CGI. “I wanted to fully commit to the design and give Tom and the other actors an actual jet to interact with in scenes,” Hindle says.

No other film caused as big a sensation this year as “Top Gun: Maverick.” No other movie made as much money either, with Joseph Kosinski‘s film making 1.478 billion at the worldwide box office. Time will tell if James Cameron‘s “Avatar: The Way Of Water” overtakes “Maverick” on both fronts, but there’s one thing that film won’t do: it won’t be the National Board Of Review‘s Best Film of 2022.

If it seems like it’s been light years since a fella named Tom Cruise has tasted any Oscar attention, its because it has — 23 years to be precise. His last Academy Award nomination came in 2000, a supporting nod for the 1999 film “Magnolia.” But that all figures to change thanks to “Top Gun: Maverick.” Cruise not only stars in the film but is also one of the credited producers, so a Best Picture nom would bring him his fourth overall Oscar nomination even if he’s shut out of the Best Actor race. If he’s honored for his performance as well, that would swell his total over the years to five. Cruise previously earned lead actor noms for “Born of the Fourth of July” in 1990 and “Jerry Maguire” in 1997. He currently ranks sixth on Gold Derby with 16/1 odds, behind Brendan Fraser for “The Whale,” Colin Farrell for “The Banshees of Inisherin,...

In its 11th weekend in theaters, Paramount/Skydance’s “Top Gun: Maverick” finally slipped out of the top five on the box office charts, but not before passing one of the biggest hits of all time, “Titanic,” on the all-time domestic list. And amazingly, the biggest film of the year may not be done yet, as it has a chance — albeit a small one — to become one of the top 10 highest-grossing films ever worldwide without the aid of a release in China. This weekend, “Top Gun: Maverick” added 7 million from domestic theaters and 10.3 million internationally, bringing its totals to 662.5 million domestic and 1.35 billion worldwide. On the all-time domestic chart, that puts it seventh as it passes the lifetime gross of “Titanic,” which made 600 million in its initial holiday 1997 theatrical run and an additional 59 million from re-releases in 2012, 2017 and 2020. July came to a close as movie theaters saw a minor drop that could very well be a portent of things to come, as August is expected to only have one major blockbuster.
Warner Bros. decided to use the weekend to release its animated “DC League of Super-Pets” into 4,314 theaters where it grossed an estimated 23 million, quite a bit less than expected despite its voice cast star power led by Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart.
Critics weren’t particularly critical, going by “Super-Pets’” 72 on Rotten Tomatoes with an Audience Score of 89 and a respectable “A-” CinemaScore. For whatever reason, the decision to focus on a dysfunctional group of super-powered animals – while also introducing a new animated version of the Justice League – just didn’t click with family audiences the way some felt it might. The one positive thing going for “Super-Pets” is that there are virtually no other family films over the next few months,...

Jerry Bruckheimer said it is unlikely “at this point” that Johnny Depp would return to a potential sixth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie to play Captain Jack Sparrow again, the Hollywood blockbuster producer revealed in a wide-ranging interview with The Sunday Times.
“Not at this point,” he said when asked about Depp. “The future is yet to be decided.”
Instead, the 78-year-old Bruckheimer said he’s trying to rebuild the nearly two-decades-old “Pirates” franchise around a new protagonist, ideally played by Margot Robbie. “We’re developing two ‘Pirates’ scripts. One with her, one without,” he said.
Bruckheimer’s comments come a few weeks after Depp was asked on the stand during his highly-publicized court case against ex-girlfriend Amber Heard whether it was correct that “nothing on this Earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film.” Depp said yes, revealing publicly...

The road to “Top Gun: Maverick” has been a treacherous one. The long-awaited sequel to the 1986 classic was delayed a total of five times due to the ongoing and rapidly changing effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, causing many fans to wonder when, or if, they’d be able to see the film.
Thankfully, the wait is almost over with the action drama set for release in just a few weeks. But what are the critics saying about Joseph Kosinski’s new film?
Fear not, “Top Gun” fans – the reviews for “Maverick” are in and they are praising the film as a triumph.
Tomris Laffly of RogerEbert.com gave the film a perfect score, writing, “As the jets cut through the atmosphere and brush their target soils in close-shave movements—all coherently edited by Eddie Hamilton—the sensation they generate feels miraculous and worthy of the biggest screen one can possibly find.

“He’s the fastest man alive.” Such is the kind of open self-awareness that is tastefully deployed throughout Top Gun: Maverick. Despite being the latest in a line of legacy sequels eager to capitalize on pandering nostalgia, Tom Cruise’s decades-in-waiting return to what made him a superstar only occasionally resorts to such bait. Thankfully, Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski are of a mind to make a film that ultimately exists on its own. Forced to contend with the pall of Reagan-era propaganda over the first Top Gun, this sequel has the gumption to take the original to task, while actively engaging with everything we know about its star. The film’s opening moments mirror that of its predecessor almost exactly. From the opening supers, to the music to the Tony Scott sunscapes, it’s just enough of a signal to let fans know they’re in a relatively safe space.

In December 2020, a leaked audio snippet from the set of the next “Mission: Impossible” movie revealed star/producer/most intense man alive Tom Cruise absolutely losing his mind at some unnamed crew members who had, he felt, violated the Covid protocols that were allowing the massive studio production to roll cameras during the height of the pandemic. “We are the gold standard,” you might remember him shouting. “They’re back there in Hollywood making movies right now because of us… We are creating thousands of jobs, you motherfuckers!”
Cruise went on to note that he wasn’t interested in apologies: “You can tell it to the people who are losing their fucking homes because the industry is shut down. It’s not going to put food on their table or pay for their college education. That’s what I sleep with every night — the future of this fucking industry!”

Another day, another secret bunker full of uranium to wipe out. At the start of Top Gun: Maverick, our man Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is working as a test pilot. He’s still ranked as captain: Some 30-plus years into his career and he’s advanced very little. His reputation for abandoning protocol in favor of following his own instincts precedes him. After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Topgun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.”

The collapse of Netflix subscriber numbers put wind in CinemaCon’s sails, making its glowing assessment of the theatrical future seem… if not sensible, possible. Two weeks later, major exhibitors have weighed in with their quarterly numbers; so did a major media analyst. And for all the rah-rah-rallying in Las Vegas, the real world tells a slightly different story.
AMC Entertainment revenue soared in the first quarter of 2022, as expected, and with a net loss that improved from -567 million in Q1 2021 to -337 million this year. Although revenue grew by 5X, that’s still a pretty huge loss — but AMC Entertainment chairman and CEO Adam Aron is not looking back. “Let me say it again to all of those who doubted the consumer appeal of movie theaters,” he crowed on the company’s earnings conference call Monday afternoon, the day after the newest Marvel hit opened to 450 million globally.

By the mid-1980s, Jerry Bruckheimer’s name had already been attached to some well-known movies, like American Gigolo, Flashdance, and Beverly Hills Cop, but it was 1986’s Top Gun that really set the tone for the rest of his career, as he became known for big-budget, high-octane thrillers. Of course, he’s once again attached to Top […]

‘Doctor Strange’ and ‘Top Gun’ Sequels Will Soar, but Are They Enough to Save the Summer Box Office?
This weekend kicks off the summer movie season in earnest, complete with a brand-new Marvel Cinematic Universe offering. After that? The next four months will give more evidence about the health of the industry than any time since theaters reopened since lockdown.
In the most recent pre-covid years, the month of May saw total grosses of 1 billion eight out of 11 times, including 1.077 billion in 2019. That is not likely to happen this year. Despite the real chance that both “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (Disney) and “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount) will have strong 100 million+ opening weekends (two in May is not standard), the rest of the month’s lineup lacks the heft to supplement these two expected blockbusters.
A look at the current box office standing through the first half of the week shows that theaters have grossed only 54 percent year to date compared to 2019, the last “normal” year.

Thirty years sure can make a difference. In a newly resurfaced Playboy interview with Tom Cruise, the Oscar nominee shut down a possible sequel to “Top Gun.” Now, on May 27, the sequel “Top Gun: Maverick” will open in theaters.
Cruise previously shared criticisms over the portrayal of war in “Top Gun,” telling Playboy that the film was received in a variety of different ways.
“Some people felt that ‘Top Gun’ was a right-wing film to promote the Navy. And a lot of kids loved it,” Cruise said at the time, via Gizmodo. “But I want the kids to know that that’s not the way war is — that ‘Top Gun’ was just an amusement park ride, a fun film with a PG-13 rating that was not supposed to be reality.”
He added, “That’s why I didn’t go on and make ‘Top Gun II’ and III and IV and V.

In the noisy circus of CinemaCon, two presentations cut through the static: Disney debuted the trailer for James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water,” while attendees got their first look at Paramount’s long-long-long-awaited Tom Cruise sequel “Top Gun: Maverick.”
The two films share high expectations — make that sky-high expectations. “Maverick” projections hope for a 250-300 million domestic take — and more than double that for “Avatar 2.” If either went higher few would be surprised — each is a sequel to a title that was the best-grossing film of its year — but does success have a freshness-by date?
“Top Gun” was the #1 film of 1986 — 36 years ago. “Avatar” opened 13 years ago, in 2009. “Top Gun” isn’t breaking any records — 54 years passed between “Mary Poppins” and its 2018 sequel. “Mary Poppins Returns” grossed a respectable 180 million domestic, but that was about a quarter of the original (in adjusted figures). At best, the film broke even.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is undeniably one of the summer’s most anticipated blockbusters, but it also comes with plenty of question marks. The sequel features some serious star power in the form of Tom Cruise and is almost certain to contain plenty of jaw-dropping flight sequences. But considering that 36 years have gone by since the original “Top Gun” hit multiplexes, many fans have wondered if the quintessential 80s franchise could adapt to be relevant in 2022.

Taking an early look at 2022, Gower Street Analytics is projecting global box office to reach $33.2B next year. That would rep a 58% increase on 2021 if the current year stays on track for the London-based firm’s projected approximate $21B. Gower Street estimates 2021 worldwide box office stood at $19.2B as of December 11, repping a roughly 75% increase on 2020.
Gower suggests the industry will need to wait at least until 2023 to see a full return to pre-pandemic global box office levels of over $40B.

William Blinn, the screenwriter for Prince’s Purple Rain and creator of Starsky & Hutch, has died at age 83. He passed Thursday of natural causes at an assisted living community in Burbank, according to his daughter, Anneliese Johnson.
“If you were an aspiring writer in the 70’s & 80’s, like I was, Bill’s work defined what it was to write powerful, impactful, game-changing drama,” said friend and fellow screenwriter Robbie Fox.
During a four-decade career as a writer, producer and drama specialist, Blinn wrote for Bonanza, developed Eight Is Enough, and created The Interns, The Rookies and Pensacola: Wings of Gold.
Blinn co-wrote Purple Rain with director Albert Magnoli. He was offered the 1984 film thanks to his work as a writer and executive producer on Fame, which extensively integrated music into the show.

All streaming services go through a down period after the excitement of Spooky Season, it’s only natural. Thankfully with its list of new releases for November 2020, Hulu is making the best out of a barren pop culture landscape.
For starters, Hulu is premiering one of its major 2020 reboots this month as Animaniacs arrives on Nov. 20. Yakko, Wakko, Dot, and the rest of the Warner gang are set to return for this long-awaited revival of the animated classic. And the penultimate month of the year is set to deliver a humungous haul of new movies and TV shows. In particular, fresh off their Huluween celebrations, the streaming service is celebrating Christmas early with a load of holiday-related titles dropping on November 1st.
