The film was banned in India for presenting "disparaging" impressions of life in Africa.
The film is set before the Boer War (1899-1902), during which the Afrikaners, as the descendants of the Dutch settlers in South Africa were known, rebelled against Great Britain, the colonial government of the country at the time.
Many studios rejected the project as too expensive to film.
Some 2,500 Zulus were used as extras.
