By now, the formula for blown-out editions of landmark albums is set in archival stone. For your extra dollars, you’re handed an updated, sonically enhanced version of the original album, a smattering of alternate takes of its songs, maybe a few tracks that had been relegated to the vaults or a DVD with period footage. The boxes complement, rather than upend, the core record.

While longer Best Actress-nominated performances are rarer than ones contending for Best Actor, there has been a significant amount of them over 92 years. Indeed, 44 have surpassed 90 minutes of screen time, and the overall longest nominated performance of all time comes from this category. Here is a look at the 10 longest ever nominated for the award:
10. Rosalind Russell (“Auntie Mame”)
1 hour, 48 minutes, 23 seconds (75.59% of the film)
Over the course of 16 years, Russell competed for the Best Actress Oscar four times, and her final bid was for playing an eccentric socialite who is tasked with raising her nephew. All four of her nominations were for relatively long performances, averaging one hour, 30 minutes, and 42 seconds and over 71%. She never won, and lost in 1959 to Susan Hayward, who was on her fifth and final nomination for her one-hour, 15-minute, and 26-second performance in “I Want to Live!”.
9. Isabelle Huppert (“Elle”)

One of the last Best Actress Oscar contenders hoping to sing her way into the field of five nominees is Andra Day in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.” The Grammy-nominated songstress could become the latest big-screen newcomer to land an Oscar nomination, but she wouldn’t be the first to be recognized for lighting up the screen as the jazz legend known as Lady Day. Diana Ross famously made her film debut with an Oscar-nominated portrayal of Holiday in “Lady Sings the Blues” (1972). Should Day get a nom as well, it would mark the fifth time one character has produced multiple Best Actress nominations for different films.
Ross’ performance earned her a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer, but she would go on to lose the Oscar to another diva, Liza Minnelli in “Cabaret.” “Lady Sings the Blues” was a traditional biopic about Holiday, beginning with her traumatic youth...

Last year we watched as Renee Zellweger followed the yellow brick road all the way to the Wizard of Oscar as Judy Garland in “Judy.” Can lightning (or a tornado) strike two years in a row? That’s surely the hope of Andra Day, looking like a strong Best Actress Oscar contender for her title role in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.” Like Garland, Holiday rose to stardom in the late 1930s. She also had multiple marriages, faced financial woes and struggled with drugs and alcohol. The question is: can the role in this Hulu release deliver the Oscar to Day?
Before making a decision, keep in mind that the academy has a long history of recognizing actresses for portraying other actresses or entertainers. And the more drama, trauma and tragedy the better. Even raging and hysterical divas are welcome. Let’s look back at some prime and primadonna examples from Oscar’s history.

Black Sabbath released live renditions of “Heaven and Hell” and “The Mob Rules” from the upcoming reissues of their two albums of the same name, which were their only to feature frontman Ronnie James Dio in the Eighties.
The performance of “Heaven and Hell” is a rarity previously released only in Europe in 1980 as the B-side to the band’s “Die Young” single. The rendition of “The Mob Rules,” meanwhile, comes from a previously unreleased April 22nd, 1982 concert at the Portland Memorial Coliseum.

Elegant movie star Grace Kelly was not just a stunning beauty but a gifted performer, so some might be surprised to learn that her film career lasted just five years. During those years, the regal blonde won an Oscar and worked with Alfred Hitchcock three times, in “Dial M for Murder,” “To Catch a Thief” and “Rear Window” — perhaps her signature role.
Hollywood’s big question when she married Prince Albert Rainier of Monaco in 1956 was whether she would continue to act. Fans and the media all wanted to know what would happen, but it seemed unlikely — after all, Rita Hayworth had found being a princess incompatible with being a movie star and her marriage to Prince Aly Khan lasted just a few years.

David Crosby had a busy 2020 lined up, with three separate tours, major shows with Phil Lesh, Joe Walsh, and Jason Isbell, and a lot of new music to make. At the moment, Crosby has no idea if any of that is going to happen. “I don’t want to be sitting at home, man,” Crosby says on the phone from his Santa Ynez, California, home. “I’m 78. I only got a few years left. You know that. I don’t want to spend them sitting on my butt. I got...

Renee Zellweger is poised to win her second Oscar on February 9 for uncannily transforming into Judy Garland for the biopic “Judy.” She notoriously never won an Academy Award, so Zellweger might be able to somewhat avenge that oversight. The film focuses on the final months in the life of the troubled multi-talent, as she performs to sold-out crowds in London in the winter of 1968. To celebrate, let’s take a look back at 20 of Garland’s greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Considered by many to be one of the greatest entertainer of the 20th century, Garland was indeed a triple threat. Known as the little girl (she was only 4’11) with the big voice, Garland also held her own with such great dancers as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire although she had no formal training in that area, and was Oscar-nominated twice in acting categories.

The Art Directors Guild Hall of Fame will be induct William J. Creber – the production designer responsible for, among other achievements, the Statue of Liberty scene in the original Planet of the Apes – and frequent Cecil B. DeMille collaborator Roland Anderson into its ranks at the 24th Annual Art Directors Guild’s Excellence in Production Design Awards next month.
The announcement was made today by President Nelson Coates, Adg and Awards Producer Scott Moses, Adg. The 2020 Awards will be held Saturday, February 1, at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
Creber, who died last year, is best known for his work on the Irwin Allen disaster movies The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno as well as the first three Planet of the Apes movies. He was Oscar-nominated three times, for The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), The Poseidon Adventure (1972) and The Towering Inferno (1974). He was Emmy-nominated for his work on ABC’s...

The history of the Academy Awards is the history of outside observers complaining that the voters got it wrong. And while our perceptions of Oscar mistakes often have a lot to do with how movies age and how tastes change, sometimes it’s immediately apparent that a mistake was made. Here are some examples of choices from the major categories that seemed like flubs right out of the gate.
Best Picture: “Crash” over “Brokeback Mountain” (2005)
Fifteen years later, this one still stings. A genuinely great film, one that’s both historically significant and still emotionally powerful, gets beaten by a gimmicky movie that takes an important subject and grinds it into ham-fisted theatrics and excessively on-the-nose writing. There are many theories behind the “Crash” win — from its studio’s blanket coverage of awards voters with early DVD screeners to older Hollywood veterans refusing to watch the gay-cowboy movie — but no matter why it happened,...

Perhaps Renee Zellweger will have better luck than Judy Garland did at the Academy Awards. Zellweger, who won supporting actress for 2003’s “Cold Mountain,” is the favorite to take home the Oscar next February for her haunting portrayal of the legendary star/singer in the acclaimed “Judy.”
Exactly 65 years ago, Garland was the front-runner to receive her first Academy Award for her powerhouse performance in “A Star is Born,” George Cukor‘s lavish musical version of the 1937 William Wellman classic tale of a matinee idol on the descent who marries an ingenue on the rise.
When the star-studded premiere at the Pantages Theatre aired live on TV on Sept. 29, 1954, star after star told host Jack Carson, who also appears in the film, that Garland was a shoo-in for Oscar gold. Dean Martin told the crowd Garland would probably take home every accolade and Lucille Ball echoed his sentiments.

Happy happy birthday to the legendary Bing Crosby, who would have turned 116 on May 3, 2019. Der Bingle was not only one of the most popular vocalists of all time, but he was a hit on the radio as well as being quite an accomplished actor, earning a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in 1944’s “Going My Way,” one of his three Oscar nominations. Crosby also earned a Golden Globe nom for 1951’s “Here Comes the Groom” and was named Best Actor for “The Country Girl” (1954) from the National Board of Review.

Glenda Jackson was looking to do what no one has ever done before at the Tony Awards: win Best Actress in a Play in back-to-back years. Alas, she won’t get a chance to, as the Triple Crown champ was snubbed for her performance in “King Lear” on Tuesday.
Jackson, who prevailed last year for “Three Tall Women,” had been in first place in our Tony odds, but she was Mia on the shortlist, which, adding insult to injury, has six nominees. They are Annette Bening (“All My Sons”), Olivier winner Laura Donnelly (“The Ferryman”), Elaine May (“The Waverly Gallery”), Janet McTeer (“Bernhardt/Hamlet”), Laurie Metcalf (“Hillary and Bill”) and Heidi Schreck (“What the Constitution Means to Me”).
In hindsight, maybe we should’ve seen her snub coming. While the soon-to-be 83-year-old received stellar notices for her turn as the title character, the production itself underwhelmed critics. “King Lear” wound up with only one bid,...

Last year, Glenda Jackson became the 24th performer to complete the Triple Crown of Acting when she won the Best Actress in a Play Tony Award for “Three Tall Women.” She can write another chapter in awards history this year by becoming the first person to win back-to-back Tonys in that category.
Jackson is the odds-on favorite to prevail for her performance as the titular character in “King Lear,” which opened Thursday on Broadway. She’d be the eighth person to win the category twice and the 11th to have multiple wins in the category. None of the previous multiple Best Actress in a Play champs triumphed in consecutive years.

We weren’t surprised that Bradley Cooper‘s remake of “A Star is Born” lost seven of its eight races at the Academy Awards. After all, there is an Oscar curse on this classic tale of Hollywood. The first three versions of “A Star is Born” earned 17 nominations but won just two. The original 1937 film claimed the screenplay award while the 1976 musical remake won Best Original Song (“Evergreen”) for its leading lady, Barbra Streisand. She was the first female composer to win this Oscar; Lady Gaga became the 11th when she won for “Shallow.”

The “A Star Is Born” cinematic universe has never done that well when it comes to the Oscars, and that trend continued Sunday as Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga‘s version converted just one of its eight nominations — Best Original Song for “Shallow” — into a win. That ties the haul set by two of the previous three versions.

Barry Jenkins and Spike Lee made history this year as the first black writers to earn multiple nominations at the Oscars. They’re both up for Best Adapted Screenplay, Jenkins for “If Beale Street Could Talk” and Lee for “BlacKkKlansman.” But Jenkins previously won this category for “Moonlight” (2016), so if he prevails again he will become the first black writer to claim multiple awards, and he would join an elite group of scribes with multiple Best Adapted Screenplay trophies on their mantels.

“Roma” star Yalitza Aparicio could make history with a Best Actress Oscar win in multiple ways. Not only would she become the first Mexican woman and the first indigenous woman to prevail, but she’d be one of the youngest as well.
The former schoolteacher just celebrated her 25th birthday on Dec. 11 and will be 25 years and 75 days old on the Feb. 24 Oscar ceremony, which would make her the seventh youngest winner in the category. Bradley Cooper‘s remake of “A Star is Born” has reaped bids with 12 of the 13 guilds that hand out awards but has yet to win with any of the six heard from so far. Cooper was widely expected to take home the Best First-Time Director prize at the DGA Awards on Feb. 2 but he lost that race to Bo Burnham (“Eighth Grade”). The original 1937 edition claimed the screenplay award while the 1976 musical remake won Best Original Song (“Evergreen”) for its star, Barbra Streisand. She was the first female composer to win this Oscar; Lady Gaga would be the 11th.

Ray Milland directs a fine western drama, strong on character and tension; it garnered enough praise to set him on a second, minor career behind the camera. Milland also stars as a gunman in the wrong place at the wrong time — framed for a mass murder in an unforgiving frontier town. Who ya gonna blame? That nasty sidewinder villain Raymond Burr, of course.

Grace Kelly would’ve celebrated her 89th birthday on November 12, 2018. The Oscar-winning actress made just a handful of movies before transforming from a Hollywood princess into a real life one following her marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956. In honor of her birthday, let’s take a look back in the photo gallery above of all 11 of her films, ranked worst to best.
Kelly got her start performing onstage and in television before being drafted by Hollywood to appear in Henry Hathaway‘s ripped-from-the-headlines nail-biter “Fourteen Hours” (1951) when she was just 22-years-old. The next year found her starring as the concerned wife to an imperiled town marshal (Gary Cooper) in the landmark western “High Noon” (1952).
She got her first Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress for John Ford‘s adventure yarn “Mogambo” (1953), playing one of two love interests (along with Ava Gardner) to big game hunter Clark Gable. The next year,...

You don’t have to go the full De Niro, but an image change often leads to Oscar gold.
Known for comedy? Go dramatic. A tough guy? Go comedic. Strikingly beautiful? Glam down.
This awards season funny lady Melissa McCarthy, who earned a supporting actress Oscar nomination for the raunchy 2011 hit “Bridesmaids,” has been receiving stellar reviews for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” as a prickly and lonely celebrity biographer. McCarthy is on the fast track for Oscar-consideration this year.
Also, a shoo-in for multiple award nomination is Lady Gaga, who traded in her meat dress and platinum blonde tresses for jeans and dark hair to play a struggling singer/songwriter in the acclaimed remake of “A Star is Born.”
Even when the Oscar was in its infancy, performers found altering an image caught the attention of the Academy voters.

It is criminal to think that Judy Garland’s lone Best Actress Oscar nomination was for 1954’s “A Star Is Born.” She was on the comeback trail at the time, having been released from her MGM contract four years before. Her embodiment of rising star Esther Blodgett opposite James Mason, nominated as washed-up actor Norman Maine, was considered the apex of her career. When the Oscar went to Grace Kelly in the mostly now-forgotten “The Country Girl,” no less than Groucho Marx called it, “the biggest robbery since Brink’s.”
Why did Garland lose? Tom O’Neil, the Jockey-in-Chief of Gold Derby, tipped me off. She didn’t have a cathartic final song that followed her declaration to the crowd, as she mourned her husband, that she was “Mrs. Norman Maine.” In contrast, Barbra Streisand, whose 1976 version is a pale imitation, at least knew to include a final ballad — “With...

Lady Gaga has leaped into the lead in our combined Gold Derby odds for Best Actress at the Oscars. Her first on-screen feature film role in “A Star Is Born” has 19/5 top odds over more traditional actresses Glenn Close (“The Wife”), Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”), Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) and Viola Davis (“Widows”). But a win by a music star in an acting category wouldn’t be a first at the Academy Awards.
Two of the all-time greats took home Oscar gold decades ago. Frank Sinatra managed to parlay his huge success as a singer to a pretty solid film career. The results included an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for “From Here to Eternity” in 1953 and a second nomination for “The Man with the Golden Arm” in 1955 as Best Actor.

Oscar often calls when funny ladies get serious on the big screen. This year, it might be Melissa McCarthy’s turn to be recognized for her dramatic change of pace in the truth-based “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” As Lee Israel, a Manhattan-based curmudgeonly author with a drinking problem whose style of celebrity biographies have gone out of fashion by the year 1991, McCarthy drops all pretense of adopting her usual bouncy and brassy comic persona.
Instead, she wallows in disappointment, bitterness and child-like prankish behavior. In order to raise much-needed cash to pay her bills, she stoops to forging letters from long-dead celebrities and selling them to gullible bookstore owners and collectors. I kept waiting for McCarthy to part the clouds that hang over her character and inject a bit of her sunny side. Instead, she is marvelously morose as she performs a committed overcast performance that pays off big time as the movie concludes.

Hollywood’s allure, insatiable ambition, and the price of fame are at the center of one of the most oft-told stories in show-biz history: “A Star Is Born.” The latest edition, with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, is the fourth to be made, and the third to be music-centric. Variety has already written many articles about that one, which is released today — read Owen Gleiberman’s review here — but how do the previous renditions stack up?

Producer David O. Selznick’s original rendering won Oscars for its cinematography and its original story. While the story was written by director William A. Apologies to all comedies and musicals and comedy/musicals coming out this year, but we’ve (probably) seen our Golden Globe winner: “A Star Is Born.” Warner Bros. dropped the first trailer for the remake Wednesday, which finds Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper making beautiful music together with a country twist.
Making his directorial debut, Cooper also plays Jackson Maine, a country crooner who takes Ally (Gaga), a struggling artist, under his wing. They fall in love, she becomes a star, while his star wanes. It’s a timeless story. The whiskey-soaked trailer features a de-glammed, brunette Gaga, a super-tan, bearded Cooper, and a ton of catchy new songs. It’s right up the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s alley.

It hardly seems fair that the Emmy hopes of “Roseanne” collapsed so soon after its star’s Twitter meltdown. Sure, Roseanne Barr’s own racetrack odds for Best Comedy Actress dropped drastically overnight at Gold Derby – from 22/1 to 80/1 – as Experts like me and Pete Hammond pulled her from our predictions in the wake of her scandal, but now it looks like co-stars John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf will be skunked in the acting races, too.
Most tragically of all: “Roseanne” will probably fail to be nominated for Best Comedy Series just like it got shunned throughout its original nine-year run even though it was the number one-ranked TV show in America for a few years and won the Golden Globe and Peabody. Not even to be nominated!
Many Emmy pundits like me believe there’s a good chance Robin Wright will make the list again for Best Drama Actress once...
