Alfred Hitchcock’s Suspicion – How Studio Changes & Cary Grant’s Image Softened A Dark Classic Forever
Image
Alfred Hitchcock Suspicion Ending ( Photo Credit – Facebook )

Alfred Hitchcock has stood tall as one of cinema’s most revered creative forces for decades. The legendary director, who had mastered suspense like few ever could, crafted stories that sank into the audience’s bones and Suspicion was no exception.

However, not many know that Hitchcock has a bitter memory tangled within its legacy and it includes a last-minute change he despised and a lead actor he ultimately wished he had never chosen.

The Cary Grant Conundrum

The year was 1941 when Hitchcock first joined forces with Cary Grant, a collaboration that would later bloom into one of Hollywood’s most iconic partnerships. At the time, Grant was the darling of the silver screen, the epitome of charm and effortless wit, who dazzled audiences in films like Bringing Up Baby and The Philadelphia Story.

TCM Classic Film Festival To Open With George Lucas And ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ & More Popular Blockbusters Than Ever From ‘Jaws’ To ‘Back To The Future’ To ‘Superman’
Image
The 16th annual TCM Classic Film Festival gets underway Thursday night in Hollywood with a 45th anniversary screening at the Chinese Imax Theatre of the acclaimed second Star Wars feature, 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, with creator George Lucas on stage to talk about it. It certainly fits in with this year’s theme, “Grand Illusions: Fantastic Worlds on Film,” though it is hard to wrap my head around the fact that this movie is now old enough to fit snugly in with so many of the classic titles TCM regularly features on their channel and at this festival, which brings them back in all their glory to the big screen.

The heavy programming of more contemporary box office hits this year does provide some irony to the title of one of the festival’s panels happening Sunday, “They Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To,” featuring among others Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman.

Mimi Cave
Holland (2025) Movie Review: Good Performances and Clever Direction Fail to Add Depth to a Shallow Script
Mimi Cave
Mimi Cave’s Holland needs a sub-title: I can’t believe it’s not Paul Schrader! It’s not just the way the film immerses itself into the Dutch-American culture of Western Michigan that’s traditionally been Schrader’s territory, but so much of it seems redolent of his primary thematic obsessions. It may even potentially be regarded as a feminist subversion of Schrader’s typical work, with Nicole Kidman’s heroine challenging the “toxic masculinity” (for the lack of a better word) that characterizes so many of his films, being especially reminiscent of Hardcore (1979) in many ways. Unfortunately, the story hangs not on just on a predictable plotline, but it has nothing new or particularly insightful to say about small-town America either. What this movie really needed was a writer of Schrader’s caliber to freshen it up.

The story is set in the real-life city of Holland, Michigan,...

Why Alfred Hitchcock Hated 'Suspicion,' One of His Most Successful Movies
Image
Every talented artist needs to look at their work from time to time and say, “Damn! I’m good.” Well, Alfred Hitchcock did that. The legendary British director — known as the “Master of Suspense” — made over 50 films in his career and loved most of them. Why wouldn’t he adore them? His movies garnered a whopping 46 Oscar nominations, making him the true symbol of excellence. And at the box office, they brought in more hundreds of millions. On top of that, Hitchcock invented (or popularized) many filmmaking techniques, including the “Dolly Zoom,” and the “MacGuffin,” leaving a true mark on cinema.

In a 1969 interview with the BBC, the Master of Suspense named Rear Window and Shadow of a Doubt as two of his cherished works from his catalog. He also had good things to say about many of his other films. However, he hated Suspicion, a lavishly photographed, first-rate romantic...

Sikandar Pre-Release Business! (Photo Credit – YouTube)

We’re about three weeks away from Salman Khan’s Sikandar. The release date has not been confirmed yet, but as per rumors, the action thriller is arriving in theatres on March 30, 2025. We hear the film has minted massive moolah via pre-release business and recovered a chunk of its budget. Scroll below for the latest box office update!

What is Sikandar’s budget?

As per multiple online reports, Sikandar is mounted on an estimated budget of 200 crores. This is a good move, considering that Salman Khan movies have not been up to the mark and have suffered losses due to their high budget in recent years. Even his last release, Tiger 3, was a losing affair despite earning 286 crores due to its staggering investment of 300 crores.

Sikandar recovers over 75% of budget?

Ar Murugadoss’s directorial has reportedly earned 165 crores from its pre-release business alone.

Why Alfred Hitchcock Regretted Casting Cary Grant In This Movie With 97% On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
For decades, Alfred Hitchcock has been regarded as one of the greatest creative directors of all time. As a master of suspense, Hitchcock is mostly unrivaled and Suspicion is certainly no exception. However, after the director was coerced into an ending he was not in favor of, the movie's abrupt final scene made Hitchcock regret casting Cary Grant as his lead actor. The 1941 movie marked the first collaboration between Alfred Hitchcock and Cary Grant, which became the foundation for their future endeavors. Yet despite this, Hitchcock still called Grant's undoubted talents as an actor into question because of one crucial Suspicion change.

Suspicion is based on the 1932 novel, Before the Fact. Hitchcock's adaptation features Cary Grant, who became the king of classic Hollywood, and mostly remains faithful to the source material. However, Suspicion makes one surprising change in its final moments, leading to a dissatisfying conclusion that the director later regretted.

Warner Bros. TV Fires Back at Michael Crichton’s Widow Over ‘Baseless’ Claim ‘The Pitt’ Is an ‘ER’ Ripoff: It’s a ‘New and Original Show’ (Exclusive)
Image
Warner Bros. TV has responded to a lawsuit filed Tuesday by Michael Crichton‘s widow, calling the legal move “baseless” and arguing that the studio’s upcoming medical procedural “The Pitt” is very different from “ER.”

“The lawsuit filed by the Crichton Estate is baseless, as ‘The Pitt’ is a new and original show,” the studio said in a statement. “Any suggestion otherwise is false, and Warner Bros. Television intends to vigorously defend against these meritless claims.”

The swift Warner Bros. response comes after the Crichton estate accused exec producer John Wells of a “personal betrayal,” claiming that he and star Noah Wyle came up with “The Pitt” after the Crichton estate blocked their plans to reboot “ER.” “‘The Pitt’ is ‘ER,’” the lawsuit states. “It’s not like ‘ER.’ It’s not kind of ‘ER.’ It’s not sort of ‘ER.’ It is ‘ER’ with the exact same executive producer,...

Jon M. Chu Shares His TCM Picks from August’s Lineup, Including ‘Carousel’ and ‘Charade’
Image
Like Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese before him, Jon M. Chu is sharing his TCM Picks from their upcoming lineup. The director of “Crazy Rich Asians,” “In the Heights,” and the upcoming “Wicked” is following in Guillermo del Toro’s footsteps in highlighting a great film that sometimes doesn’t get as much love as it should. Watch Chu’s picks in the video below.

Del Toro picked Alfred Hitchcock’s “Suspicion” among his favorites. It’s one of IndieWire’s as well, and we put it at #10 on our list of Hitchcock’s greatest movies. But that film is often overlooked, even by Hitchcock fans.

Similarly, movie musical lovers sometimes overlook Henry King’s 1956 adaptation of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Carousel,” starring Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae. The people who love it, though, fiercely advocate for it, and Chu is among them.

“I’ve loved ‘Carousel’ since I was a kid,...

Elliot Silverstein Dies: ‘Cat Ballou’, ‘A Man Called Horse’ Director Was 96
Image
Update, with DGA statement: Elliot Silverstein, who directed Jane Fonda and, in an Oscar-winning performance, Lee Marvin in the 1965 comedy-Western Cat Ballou, died Nov. 24 in Los Angeles. He was 96.

His death was announced by family members.

Born August 3, 1927, in Boson, Silverstein launched his directing career during television’s 1950s on such programs as Omnibus and the Alfred Hitchcock-produced mystery series Suspicion, Silverstein stayed busy with episodic series throughout the 1960s. Among his credits from the era: Route 66, Have Gun – Will Travel, Naked City, Dr. Kildare, The Defenders and four episodes of The Twilight Zone, including the fan-favorite, Rod Serling-penned 1961 installment titled The Passersby, a mournful ghost story set at the end of the American Civil War.

Elliot Silverstein, Director of ‘Cat Ballou’ and ‘A Man Called Horse,’ Dies at 96
Image
Elliot Silverstein, who helmed episodes of such acclaimed TV shows as Naked City, The Twilight Zone and Route 66 before guiding Lee Marvin to a best actor Oscar in Cat Ballou, his feature directorial debut, died Friday in Los Angeles, his family announced. He was 96.

The Boston native also helmed A Man Called Horse (1970), which starred Richard Harris in the title role as an English aristocrat who eventually becomes the leader of the Native tribe that had captured and tortured him. The action movie spawned a couple of sequels.

Most importantly, Silverman was instrumental in the formation of the milestone Bill of Creative Rights for directors.

“Every director today owes a debt of gratitude to Elliot Silverstein,” DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter said in a statement. “No one ever worked harder or was more passionate about protecting artists from having their work and vision altered than Elliot.”

Guillermo del Toro doesn’t hold back about his love for his favorite movies. If you’ve spent any time on his Twitter feed over the years, you’ve likely seen him praise Stanley Donen’s use of the color red throughout the late director’s body of work, and hail everything from William Wellman’s 1931 film “Other Men’s Women” to David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” from 2022. The man has wide-ranging taste, and a deep awareness of cinematic history that’s informed his own films.

Now he follows Turner Classic Movies advisors Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and Paul Thomas Anderson in giving his own picks from TCM’s lineup, all titles that will be airing in October. Watch the video, exclusive to IndieWire, above.

Apple TV+ commissioned Keshet U.K. to produce “Suspicion,” which is based on the popular Israeli series “False Flag” and launched on the service in February 2022. Its sales foray marks one of the rare instances where an original on a streamer (that’s still available globally on the platform) has been sold on the open market for linear rights.

In recent years, major SVODs have been focused on keeping originals on their own platforms for extensive periods in order to drive subscribers. However, in this case, it’s Keshet International that holds...

Jessica Williams Reveals Harrison Ford Picked Sugar Ray Song to Sing on ‘Shrinking’
Image
Harrison Ford was one of the last major movie stars to avoid doing television, but 2023 has seen him jump onto the small screen in a major way. In addition to starring alongside Helen Mirren in the “Yellowstone” prequel “1923,” he’s also taken on his first sitcom role in “Shrinking.” The therapy comedy gives Ford plenty of opportunities to show off his brand of curmudgeonly humor, but he also plays against type in several heartfelt moments — including a scene where he sings the Sugar Ray song “Every Morning” in the car alongside his co-star Jessica Williams.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Williams opened up about the surreal experience of singing carpool karaoke with Ford — and revealed the actor’s role in planning the scene.

“Oh, it was really fun — Sugar Ray with Harrison in the car,” Williams said. “They asked me for a list of songs and a lot of the...

Jack Ryan Code Name Theory Explains The Franchise's Weirdest Elements
Image
The world of Jack Ryan has some weird elements, but the theory that Jack Ryan is a code name explains them. The Jack Ryan stories have been rebooted several times as movies and now as a TV show on Amazon Prime. This has created contradictions and potholes around various aspects of the main character. These changes in the protagonist from one installment of the franchise to another make it difficult to understand the timeline, or whether certain movies even fit into the Ryanverse.

It is necessary to suspend disbelief over characters' actions in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan movies. Action movies are meant to entertain with explosions and feats of strength, and often sacrifice realism as a result. However, Tom Clancy movies strive to present a sense of cohesive realism, evidenced by its complicated heroes and sympathetic villains. This means that the inconsistencies created by Jack Ryan changing actors between...

Producer Anna Winger on Making a Diaspora Project With ‘Unorthodox’
Anna Thomson
For Berlin-based American writer-producer Anna Winger, creating the Netflix series “Unorthodox” offered a unique opportunity to tell a Jewish story in Germany.

The show, which premiered March 26 on Netflix, is inspired by Deborah Feldman’s 2012 memoir, “Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots,” and follows a young woman who leaves her husband and her insular ultra-Orthodox Hasidic Satmar community in Williamsburg, New York, for a new life in Berlin.

Winger, whose credits include the hit Amazon series franchise “Deutschland 83″ and its two follow-ups, “Deutschland 86” and “Deutschland 89,” co-created with husband Jörg Winger, produced “Unorthodox” via her Berlin-based Studio Airlift shingle.

The series stars Israeli actress Shira Haas as Esty, who leaves an unhappy arranged marriage and travels to Berlin, home to her estranged mother and where she hopes to study music. As she begins to navigate her new life, her husband, portrayed by fellow Israeli actor Amit Rahav,...

26 Women Directors You Should Know About (and Why You Might Not)
Greta Gerwig
The denizens of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences need to get their eyesight checked. 2019 was another watershed year for women on and off-screen, even if the accolades accrued at the Golden Globes and Oscars did not reflect it. Greta Gerwig released her highly anticipated Little Women, Olivia Wilde made her directorial debut with the sassy, Gen Z Booksmart, Big Little Lies Season 2 aired on HBO, and a slew of films ushered in a horror renaissance featuring astonishing female leads including Florence Pugh in Midsommar and Lupita Nyong’o in Us. But 2019 also marked a year of great loss: the prolific filmmaker Barbara Hammer passed away, as did luminary Agnès Varda and the performance artist and experimental filmmaker, Carolee Schneemann. Which is to say, women were in the news when it came to cinema; some of us just had to know where to look.

While feminist film theory from...

Martin Scorsese at an event for The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards (2010)
The Oscar for Best Director doesn’t go to … 5 legendary filmmakers
Martin Scorsese at an event for The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards (2010)
With the Academy Awards just around the corner, it’s time to talk about the “who didn’ts” — the actors who never won an Oscas, let alone received a nomination-as well as classic films that never saw Oscar gold. And there are plenty of who didn’t filmmakers. Countless legendary directors didn’t win Oscars or even earn nominations.

Martin Scorsese, who is one of the most influential, acclaimed directors of the past 50 years has only won for directing 2006’s Best Picture winner “The Departed.” Though his 1976 masterpiece “Taxi Driver” was nominated for Best Picture, he didn’t earn an Oscar nomination for Best Director. He first got his first directing nomination for his 1980 masterwork “Raging Bull,” but lost to Robert Redford for “Ordinary People.”

Scorsese has received a lot of Oscar love. As far as producing, writing and directing, he’s received 14 nominations. And this year, he’s nominated...

Yalitza Aparicio could become one of the youngest Best Actress Oscar champs of all time
Marina de Tavira, Marco Graf, Yalitza Aparicio, Daniela Demesa, Diego Cortina Autrey, and Carlos Peralta in Roma (2018)
“Roma” star Yalitza Aparicio could make history with a Best Actress Oscar win in multiple ways. Not only would she become the first Mexican woman and the first indigenous woman to prevail, but she’d be one of the youngest as well.

The former schoolteacher just celebrated her 25th birthday on Dec. 11 and will be 25 years and 75 days old on the Feb. 24 Oscar ceremony, which would make her the seventh youngest winner in the category. Three 25-year-olds have won Best Actress: Jennifer Jones prevailed on her 25th birthday on March 2, 1944, for “The Song of Bernadette”; “The Country Girl” (1954) star Grace Kelly, whom Aparicio would dethrone, was 25 years and 138 days old; and Hilary Swank was 25 years and 240 days old when she nabbed her first Oscar for “Boys Don’t Cry” (1999).

Then-21-year-old Marlee Matlin holds the record as the youngest champ, for “Children of a Lesser God” (1986).

The Surprising Inspiration Behind Henry Golding's Character in A Simple Favor

The past few years have been a whirlwind for Henry Golding, and luckily for all of us, he doesn't plan on slowing down anytime soon.

The 31-year-old British–Malaysian actor first got his start on screen as a travel host on BBC's The Travel Show in 2014, and has quickly transformed himself into one of Hollywood's hottest up-and-coming actors. After stealing our hearts with his role as Nick Young in Jon M. Chu's blockbuster rom-com Crazy Rich Asians this Summer, Golding is stepping into a much darker role in the upcoming thriller A Simple Favor, alongside Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick.

"It's such a different take of characters that I've played," Golding told Popsugar about his role in the film. "Sean is this much darker, mysterious, unsuspecting character. You don't know where he sits." Even though Sean is a far cry from the romantic Nick Young,...
