“Frankenstein Legacy”
“Frnakenstein Legacy” is a new horror feature, written and directed by Paul Dudbridge, currently in post-production:

“…over the course of 100 years, the diary of ‘Dr. Frankenstein's has been stolen at knife-point, traded in back alleys and chased down by a shadowy cabal who would see it destroyed.

“Now the book is in the hands of ‘Millicent Browning’ a gifted scientist, as she searches obsessively for a cure for her husband's degenerative illness…”

Jacob Elordi under investigation for alleged assault
Image
If there’s one standout scene in Saltburn it’s — Ok, so it’s tough to pick just one, but this story centers around the bathtub scene, in which Barry Keoghan’s character drinks the bath water that Jacob Elordi’s character has masturbated in. It’s a scene that feels ripe for parody and that’s just what Joshua Fox, a producer on The Kyle and Jackie O Show — a morning radio program based out of Australia — went for: the joke. The only problem is that the subject, Jacob Elordi himself, didn’t find it funny at all, especially since he was being filmed. And now the actor is under investigation following an altercation that allegedly took place afterwards.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Fox approached Elordi at a hotel this past weekend with a container labeled “Jacob Elordi’s bath water.” Elordi then asked, “What am I supposed to do with this,...

Jacob Elordi Involved in Police Investigation After Alleged Altercation With Radio Producer
Image
Jacob Elordi is involved in a police investigation in his native Australia after allegedly assaulting a radio producer on Saturday.

As first reported by Australia’s Daily Telegraph, the “Saltburn” and “Euphoria” star was at a hotel in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs when he was approached by Joshua Fox, a producer for “The Kyle & Jackie O Show” on Kiis FM. According to Fox’s account of the situation on the show Monday morning, he asked Elordi if he could have some of his bathwater for Jackie O for her birthday — a reference to a viral scene in “Saltburn.” Elordi asked Fox to stop filming and delete the footage, and then the situation allegedly escalated.

“I refuse to because I feel uncomfortable right now and this is the only evidence,” Fox said on “The Kyle & Jackie O Show.” “And then Jacob kind of just flips and he kind of pushes me...

Willem Dafoe Talks ‘Poor Things,’ Why He’s Always “Aware” Of Awards Buzz & The Concluding Actors Strike: “I Assume Things Will Just Go Back To The Way They Were” — Camerimage
Image
With SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP reaching a tentative agreement on a new contract, our industry’s biggest stars, previously forbidden from participating in the promotion of movies distributed and made by struck studios and streamers, are finally joining the party.

The timing couldn’t have been better for Poland’s EnergaCamerimage Film Festival, which opened last night, and one of the buzzy names here on the ground in Torun is Willem Dafoe, who has stepped out to promote Poor Things, his wacky, darkly comic Golden Lion winner from Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos.

“I assume things will just go back to the way they were, but the terms will be different,” Dafoe told Deadline when quizzed on how he thinks the prolonged strike might shape the industry’s future, adding he didn’t hold all the details of the negotiations.

“I’m a worker bee. I work a lot. And I...

11 Sci-Fi Movies That Completely Changed How We See Reality
Image
Metropolis (1927): The German film continues to inspire popular media with its dystopian premise and impressive visuals. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956): This classic sci-fi movie coined the phrase "pod people" and influenced numerous adaptations and similar stories. Blade Runner (1982): Ridley Scott's film raises questions about the advancement of technology and its potential to mimic human life, reflecting society's current concerns.

There have been a handful of sci-fi films that have influenced how people perceive and interact with the world around them. Cinema and stories in general have always had a way of shaping public opinions and conveying ideas to their audiences. Nineteen Eighty-Four, the works of Shakespeare, and Frankenstein are just a few that continue to be studied, and provide inspiration many decades after they were first released.

Similarly, there are landmark movies that change the idea of what is possible in cinema, and many of...

Willem Dafoe’s ‘Poor Things’ Makeup Took Six Hours Each Day to Get On: I’d Show Up at 3 A.M., ‘Meditating and Trying to Deal With Standing Still’
Image
Willem Dafoe spent six hours in the makeup chair each day for “Poor Things,” the actor recalled in a recent interview with Vanity Fair.

Now able to speak about the Frankenstein reimagining after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Dafoe discussed his experience filming Yorgos Lanthimos’s upcoming black comedy. Dafoe stars as the disfigured mad scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter, whose face was maimed by his surgeon father when he was younger.

In the film, Dr. Baxter decides to reanimate a woman’s corpse by placing her brain with the brain of an unborn child. This woman becomes Bella (Emma Stone), who must navigate human life as an adult while she’s stuck with the brain of a child. When it becomes clear that Bella desires to explore the outside world for herself, Dr. Baxter is faced with the fatherly realization that he must let her go.

Tim Burton’s Favorite Movie Reveals Perfect 65-Year-Old Franchise To Resurrect (Despite $245 Million Flop)
Image
One of Tim Burton's favorite movies is Hammer's Dracula A.D. 1972, which he described as a "weird mixture of a Hammer horror film and swinging London." Despite his misfiring vampire comedy Dark Shadows, a Burton-helmed Dracula movie could revive the franchise and Hammer Horror. Burton's past successes with gothic horror make him an ideal choice to bring a fresh and more modern take to Hammer's Dracula.

One of Tim Burton's favorite movies makes him the best candidate to breathe life into horror's most famous monster. A quick look at Tim Burton's favorite horror movies reveals a broad diet of influences, but few that would be regarded as critically acclaimed masterpieces; instead, he loves old-fashioned B-movies like The War of the Gargantuas or Charlton Heston's The Omega Man. The director is also an admirer of classic British horror, including The Wicker Man or the works of Hammer.

The Halloween After Party: November Horror Releases from 1970 to 2023
Image
Who on earth would want to release a horror movie in November?! That’s like showing up to Thanksgiving dinner on a full stomach or going for a jog after a marathon. Surely, studios don’t purposefully plan to release their movie during the four weeks After the entire world is consumed with the dead, dying, maimed and dismembered, right? The calendar says spooky season is over (although you and I know differently) and as the grumpy neighbor in Halloween II says, the general audience has “been trick or treated to death” by October’s end.

On the contrary, November Horror has had some shockingly great runs over the years. And maybe there’s a method to the madness. If horror fans are lucky, October is packed tighter than a Black Friday sale at Target during a live in store Taylor Swift performance. Why not wait a couple of weeks...

Jennifer Aniston’s Eyes and Brad Pitt’s Smile: How SAG-AFTRA Fought AI Zombies
Image
SAG-AFTRA had settled dozens of issues, ranging from pension and health contributions, to page limits for self-taped auditions, to pay for background actors.

But there was still the small matter of zombies.

The union was worried that studios could use artificial intelligence to reanimate dead actors, or to create a digital Frankenstein out of the body parts of real actors.

Those were among the last deal points to fall into place before the union could end its 118-day strike on Wednesday.

In the end, SAG-AFTRA did not get every AI restriction it was looking for. But it did get most of it, including a requirement that if a Frankenstein actor contains recognizable features of real-life actors, studios must get permission from those actors.

“If you’re using Brad Pitt’s smile and Jennifer Aniston’s eyes, both would have a right of consent,” said Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the union’s chief negotiator.

Image
Emma Stone has found the perfect role in The Curse, a new TV show that allows her to showcase her versatility as a performer. Stone's career has been genre-spanning, from blockbuster comedies to hard-hitting dramas, but it's her post-Spider-Man films that have truly allowed her to shine. The Curse continues the trend of Stone exploring weird and off-beat projects that make viewers both laugh and squirm, cementing her status as a captivating and compelling performer.

Emma Stone's new TV show has finally created the perfect role for the Academy Award-winning actor. The Marvels Review: This Is No Cure for Superhero Fatigue
Image
There is a scene early on in The Marvels, the 33rd installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel makes a triumphant return by gliding through the cosmos of outer space with her trusty alien cat, Goose, perched imperiously on her shoulder. The feline looks as if it were a Space Bastet. This teases an interesting movie; a space opera wherein the most powerful beings in the universe are a woman and her cat. Imagine the kind of zany adventures they could have if you committed to the bit?

Shortly afterward, there is another scene where a young woman who calls herself Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), but who is really a teen named Kamala Khan, fangirls hard upon discovering her idol, Captain Marvel, was just in her living room. You can guess the sputtering double takes and easy laughs that ensue, yet laugh you shall because...

Guillermo del Toro's New Movie Is A Step Closer To A Classic Horror Milestone That's 31 Years In The Making
Image
Guillermo del Toro's next horror movie, an adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, is one of his most anticipated projects, bringing him closer to covering all classic horror monsters. After Frankenstein, Del Toro only needs to cover werewolves, mummies, and the invisible man to achieve the goal of covering all the classic monsters, offering his own unique interpretations.

Guillermo del Toro’s next horror movie is not only one of his most anticipated projects, but it’s also bringing him a step closer to a classic horror milestone. The Curse Rotten Tomatoes Score Grades Emma Stone’s First TV Show In 5 Years
Image
Emma Stone's new TV show, The Curse, has received an 80 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, falling slightly below her previous show, Maniac. Critics have praised The Curse for its genre-bending elements, blending cringe comedy with contemplative character study and undertones of horror. The Curse could continue the hot streak of its cast, including Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder, and Benny Safdie, who have all received acclaim for their previous work.

The Curse's Rotten Tomatoes score grades Emma Stone's first TV show in five years. Stone is one of the most singular actresses of her generation, known for her versatile performances in a variety of film genres. However, over her illustrious career, Stone has also starred in a few TV shows, including some small television roles early in her career and two starring roles after becoming an established actress. The latter include the 2018 Netflix miniseries Maniac and an upcoming comedy series called The Curse.

Sean Penn, Adam Driver, Academy Chief Bill Kramer to Attend Camerimage Alongside Robbie Ryan, Ed Lachman, Peter Biziou
Image
The 31st edition of the Camerimage Film Festival, Europe’s top cinematography event, will welcome a host of stellar guests to the Gothic Polish town of Torun, including Adam Driver, Sean Penn and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Bill Kramer.

Driver and Penn will screen their latest films, respectively, the high-octane biopic “Ferrari” and the portrait of Eastern Europe’s most remarkable wartime president, Volodymyr Zelensky, “Superpower.”

As regular fest guests have learned, the calendar of film screenings is just as important to study as the schedule for panels, seminars and masterclasses. That’s because Camerimage, with limited event space for now, strategically holds filmmaker talks following film projections, often in the same hall of the Jordanki cinema space.

Which means opening-night audiences who linger after Camerimage screens Robbie Ryan-shot “Poor Things,” the Frankenstein-esque fairytale by Yorgos Lanthimos, starring Emma Stone, will be able to...

Universal Had 2 Great Opportunities To Launch The Failed Dark Universe Before Tom Cruise’s The Mummy
Image
Universal missed earlier opportunities to launch the Dark Universe with films like The Wolfman and Dracula Untold, which could have offered a fresh perspective and connected universe. The failure of 2017's The Mummy at the box office ultimately killed the Dark Universe plans, losing Universal millions of dollars and crushing expectations. If Universal had used The Wolfman or Dracula Untold to launch the franchise, The Mummy could have had a better chance at success.

Tom Cruise's The Mummy was meant to launch the Dark Universe for Universal Pictures, but the studio didn't take two great opportunities to do so earlier. The studio was planning on creating its own monster universe, also known as Universal Classic Monsters, based on horror movies the production company released from the 1930s to the 1950s. Some of the most iconic titles from Universal's Dark Universe included Dracula (starring Bela Lugosi), Frankenstein (starring Boris Karloff), The Mummy,...

FilmBath Festival: ‘Poor Things’ Review

Stars: Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, Vicki Pepperdine, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael | Written by Tony McNamara | Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos

Ever since he made a splash with 2009’s Dogtooth, Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos has been considered an exciting voice in cinema, resulting in accolades and award nominations for his disturbing and absurdist works. That does not change for Poor Things, an adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel which sees Lanthimos and writer Tony McNamara on fire once more after their previous collaboration with 2018’s The Favourite.

After committing suicide, Bella (Emma Stone) is resurrected by the scarred and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe) – who Bella refers to as God. Initially naïve, Bella’s eagerness to learn more about the outside world clashes with Godwin’s desire to keep her safe. 10 Horror Movies That Are As Funny As They Are Scary
Image
Horror movies can effectively blend humor and scares through tension-building and perfect timing, making them both funny and frightening. Cult classic horror movies like Scream and Shaun of the Dead are lauded for their ability to be genuinely horrifying and hilarious without feeling like parodies. Movies like Jennifer's Body and Tucker & Dale vs. Evil combine gore-filled terror with brilliant comedic performances, subverting horror tropes for entertaining and shocking results.

Many horror movies manage to effectively infuse humor into their narrative, resulting in films that work both as comedies and scary stories. Comedy and horror are often achieved with surprisingly similar methods - typically through tension-building and perfect timing. As such, it is no surprise that some of the best horror movies of all time are also some of the funniest.

Many horror spoofs undermine the genre's conventions and movies for humorous means. However, some movies remain genuinely frightening, as well as being genuinely funny.

Frankenstein, My Father, My Brother, and Me

How did I find monsters? My father.

It was around Halloween 1956, the same week of Elvis Presley’s second appearance on Ed Sullivan.

My parents often let me stay up and watch late movies. Adventure stuff mainly: Tarzan, tiger hunters, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry. Earlier that year, the first monster I met was King Kong, when my father introduced me to him late one night.

One evening a couple of weeks later, my father said, “I have something special for you tonight.” It was James Whale’s 1931 Frankenstein.

My mother wasn’t happy.

10 Best Universal Monster Movies to Watch on Halloween
Image
The Universal horror cycle of the 1930s and 1940s shaped the entire genre, and continues to exert its influence today. Its incarnation of figures like Count Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster remain definitive, surpassing the original authors in some cases, and setting the cinematic standard for classic Gothic horror. It also established the notion of a shared universe for the first time onscreen, setting a trend that the Marvel Cinematic Universe would ultimately capitalize on.

Unsurprisingly, it makes pitch-perfect Halloween viewing. Time and familiarity has lessened its terrors, but its atmosphere and charm haven't aged a day. Gentle enough for casual fans, but serious enough for hard-core horror lovers, the films in the cycle tick off a lot of boxes for solid Oct. 31 entertainment. While not all of them are classics, the cream of them are always worth another viewing.

Why Freddy vs. Jason Is the Horror Genre's Best Crossover
Image
Horror crossovers are a common tactic when franchises are running out of steam. The history of monster crossovers dates back to the Universal cycle, with the best ones focusing on a fun fight. "Freddy vs. Jason" effectively concludes both franchises that had already exhausted their creative options.

Horror loves crossovers, especially when a given franchise (or two) is running out of gas. When the genre's various boogeymen run out of normal victims to eviscerate, the next logical step is to pit them against each other. Superheroes used the same trick in the comics from time immemorial, and the principle remains the same. The roots in horror movies go back to the Universal Monster days, and have included a number of memorable (if not always brilliant) match-ups.

2003's Freddy vs. Jason is an underrated member of their ranks. It understands the formula much better than most other monster mash-ups, and while...

Uzumaki: Fun Facts About About Junji Ito
Image
Universally acknowledged as the unequivocal master of horror manga, Junji Ito is beloved worldwide for his exceptional ability to capture the most raw and unimaginable fears through art. His most notable works — Uzumaki, Tomie, and Gyo — as well as countless other short stories and series, have developed an unprecedented cult following that spreads beyond fans of horror media. The art Ito creates can be appallingly disquieting and even downright disturbing due to the mangaka's hyper-detailed, unsettling art style and uncanny ability to evoke the readers' primal fears.

However, the man capable of creating such shocking horrors is, surprisingly, a kind and wholesome individual. The duality of Junji Ito and his unorthodox personality that combines a capability for creating frightening horror with a good-natured, life-loving character made the mangaka almost as adored as his works. Nevertheless, much of Junji Ito remains an enigma, which makes exploring the mind and background of...

Why Abandoning the Dark Universe was the Best Move for the Universal Monsters
Image
Universal’s Dark Universe is one of the most notorious failures of a franchise in the 21st century. The idea was essentially to recreate the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by utilizing the back catalog of popular monstrous characters that Universal is so well-known for. The franchise was meant to kick off with 2017’s The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, and an illustrious slate of other films were lined up to join the franchise shortly thereafter. This would’ve included Johnny Depp’s Invisible Man, Javier Bardem’s Frankenstein, and Russell Crowe’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (which was already introduced in The Mummy).

What happened instead was a disaster. Despite being one of the biggest opening weekends for a Tom Cruise feature at the time, the film failed to make a profit in spite of its $400 million in earnings. The plot took neither influence from the original nor...

Review:Poor Things is a Crowd-Pleaser at the Cost of Ideas
Image
The first thing to know about Yorgos Lanthimos' latest film is that it takes a very nifty metaphor for self-actualization, and turns it into a film that wants, more than anything, to drive that point home in as many ways as it possibly can – subtlety be damned.

The film is Poor Things, and stars Emma Stone and her hypnotic, ever-probing gaze. In it, she plays Bella Baxter, but how Bella came to be is not so simple. In a former life, Bella was a woman who took a plunge to her chilly, wet death. Happening upon her corpse, the disfigured Dr. Godwin "God" Baxter (Willem Dafoe) takes it to his lab for experiments. Discovering that this dead woman was pregnant, God removes the baby, and its brain, and plants it in the mother's skull. Reanimated, the daughter has essentially become her own mother. If this were a Mel Brooks film,...

"Creature" - The Revenge of 'Frankenstein'
The new live-action TV series "Creature", set during the 'Ottoman Empire', is a re-imagining of Mary Shelly's "Frankenstein", written and directed by Çagan Irmak, streaming October 20, 2023 on Netflix:

".... during the final era of the 'Ottoman Empire', 'Ziya', an adventurous, rebellious, medical student has the desire to become an excellent physician and to find cure to infectious diseases. Ziya's path crosses with 'Ihsan', a fellow medical doctor, balancing the fine line between genius and insanity.

"He is the only person who truly understands Ziya's ambitions. However these two estranged, wounded souls will pay the price for the forbidden experiment they were brave enough to conduct. The ancient encryption they have tried to decrypt could let all hell break loose..."

Why Bride of Frankenstein Is the Greatest Universal Monster Movie
Image
The Bride of Frankenstein was first released by Universal Pictures in 1935. Directed by James Whale, it follows the events of the 1931 classic horror film Frankenstein, fitting easily into the chronology of Universal's Monsterverse. The title itself is a bit of a misnomer in that it leads the audience to believe that the film follows Frankenstein or Frankenstein's monster’s wife... neither of which is true. In actuality, the "bride" in question is never even a bride. While both are horror icons on their own, The Bride of Frankenstein stands apart from both its predecessors and successors in Universal’s monstrous slate. The film is highly sophisticated for the time, featuring deep layers of characterization and developing the monsters in a way never seen before.

In this outing, Frankenstein's monster is gifted with genuine human emotion, which shouldn't come as a surprise seeing as how he was, after all, a living human at some point.

Frankenstein's Monster Gets A Creepy Update On The Classic Universal Monster Design
Image
New AI art provides a creepy update on the classic Universal design for Frankenstein's monster, with large sores and notches in the skin. Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein movie, featuring an incredible cast, is expected to begin production in February 2024. Other directors, Chloé Zhao and Robert Eggers, are developing different takes on classic Universal Monsters with star-studded casts.

Frankenstein's monster receives a creepy update on the classic Universal design in new AI art. Frankenstein has a rich history dating back to the early days of cinema. The iconic character, created by Mary Shelley for her 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, made his first appearance on screen in Universal's 1931 adaptation featuring Boris Karloff as The Monster. The film established the enduring image of the lumbering, bolt-necked creature.

Some new AI art, shared by @filzayeye on Instagram, provides a creepy update on the classic Universal design for Frankenstein's monster.

Turkey's Re-Imagining of Frankenstein: 'Creature' Series Official Trailer
Image
"We're helpless against death. You have to accept that." Or can we...? Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for an intense new Turkish series called Creature, adapted from the novel by Mary Shelly. This Turkish re-imagining of Shelly's classic Frankenstein story is set during the Ottoman Empire many years ago. One of the most fundamental questions of humanity, "death and beyond", is explored in Çagan Irmak's series. The biggest wish of Ziya, an adventurous, rebellious & excited young medical student, is to be a good physician and cure many epidemics that medicine cannot find a cure for. His path crosses with Ihsan, a fellow medical doctor, balancing the fine line between genius and insanity. However these two estranged, wounded souls will pay the price for the forbidden experiment they were brave enough to conduct. The series stars Erkan Kolçak Köstendil as İhsan & Taner Ölmez as Ziya, with Engin Benli, Şifanur Gül,...

The Curse: Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder face a series of strange circumstances while filming their renovation show in the new trailer
Image
Nathan Fielder is an off-beat comedian who graduated from one of Canada’s top business schools with really good grades. His former shows, Nathan For You and the recent The Rehearsal from HBO, are masterful at being uncomfortable and cringe-inducing by design as part of the humor. His combined powers with Uncut Gems director Benny Safdie bring us an abstract trailer for The Curse. The Curse is a rare scripted narrative series for Fielder, and it teams him up with the show’s star, Emma Stone. Stone is currently gaining praise in the festival circuit for her new bold Frankenstein-esque film, Poor Things.

The official synopsis from Showtime reads,

“Newly married couple Whitney and Asher are convinced they’re helping to build communities – and save lives – by developing eco-friendly homes for ‘Fliplanthropy,’ their socially conscious new reality show. But behind every on-camera renovation lies a path of off-camera destruction when a hostile makeover,...

The Best of the Frankenstein Movies Avoid Universal’s Biggest Mistake
Image
The specter of the 1931 Frankenstein looms over the entire canon of Universal Monsters and anyone who comes into it fresh. I can remember my first time going through these classic horrors; reviews, commentaries, documentaries, and pop culture referred to James Whale’s film more than any other, except for maybe Tod Browning’s Dracula. It wasn’t just parodies and references to Jack Pierce’s makeup job either. Frankenstein is regularly counted as one of, if not the best, of the Universal horror pictures. That reputation had time to build as I tried to track down the film at a video store or on cable. So perhaps it was inevitable that, when I finally got a chance to watch Frankenstein, it didn’t quite match the hype.

The Simpsons Crosses Over With Ghostface In Bloody Pulp-Style Art
Image
The Simpsons and the Scream franchise come together in new spooky crossover art, featuring Lisa Simpson and Ghostface in a vintage-style horror poster. The poster is titled Treehouse of Horror, paying homage to The Simpsons' annual Halloween episodes that incorporate horror tropes and movie spoofs. This art suggests that The Simpsons should consider a Scream parody in a future Treehouse of Horror episode, as the long-standing animated series continues to embrace horror elements.

The Simpsons and the Scream franchise get a spooky crossover in new art timed for the Halloween season. With October in full swing, there has been a sharp rise in horror content, both on the big and small screens. While the Scream franchise released a movie back in March, The Simpsons has another installment of its Treehouse of Horror series on the horizon. It is set to air on November 5.

The Simpsons now gets its own horror...

Guillermo Del Toro Reveals He Had A Jabba The Hutt ‘Star Wars’ Spin-Off In The Works
Image
Guillermo del Toro, the Mexican filmmaker and author known for winning three Academy Awards for the films, The Shape of Water and Pinocchio, revealed he was working on a Star Wars spin-off film that never got greenlit.

Del Toro’s spin-off centered around one of the franchise’s primary antagonists, the crime lord Jabba the Hutt.

The iconic director wanted the film’s story to have a style similar to Francis Ford Coppola‘s The Godfather while focusing on Jabba becoming powerful through unorthodox methods.

Del Toro admitted that his project became “‘one of those 30 screenplays that goes away,'” he said during a Q&a hosted by Collider. He followed this up by saying that he always tells his team that they did a good job and created an incredible world and incredible things.

The director remains humble about the fact that his origin story of Jabba the Hutt...

‘Close Your Eyes’ Review: Victor Erice’s First Movie in 31 Years Is a Gently Shattering Tribute to the Magic of Film
Image
First released 50 years ago, after Francoist censors convinced themselves that its anti-authoritarian messaging would have little social impact if buried under such a “boring” art film, Victor Erice’s “The Spirit of the Beehive” follows a gullible six-year-old girl named Ana (Ana Torrent), who sees a screening of “Frankenstein” when a mobile cinema arrives in the small Castilian village where she lives with her family in the Spanish Civil War’s immediate aftermath. Confused and horrified by the sight of Frankenstein’s monster accidentally killing a child, and the townspeople then killing Frankenstein’s monster in return, Ana’s elder sister tells her that neither of those things actually happened — that everything you see in films is fake. Later, with the memories of James Whale’s movie still fresh in her mind, Ana discovers a wounded republican soldier hiding in a sheepfold and decides to treat him with kindness instead of fear.

Busan 2023 Review: Poor Things, a Ghoulish, Glorious Fairytale of Tongue Play and Female Empowerment
Image
Equal parts Frankenstein and My Fair Lady, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Golden Lion winner Poor Things is a visually ravishing, disgracefully funny tale of sexual awakening and female empowerment. Adapted from the prize-winning novel by Alisdair Gray, this riotous romp stars Emma Stone as a young society woman in Victorian London, who is resurrected from the dead by Willem Dafoe’s eccentric scientist following a suicide attempt, who then embarks on a hedonistic adventure of self discovery. From its opening shot, of a vibrantly blue-dressed figure launching herself head first into the Thames, Poor Things dazzles with its perpetually evolving palette of lush colours, vintage monochrome, fantastical Munchausen-esque sets and wildly eclectic lensing. Not to be eclipsed by such an audacious aesthetic, the performances themselves are every...

Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie Release Date, Cast, Plot, And More Info
Image
One of the USA Network's most beloved television series is "Monk," which aired from 2002 to 2009. A police procedural comedy owing a lot to Sherlock Holmes (but set in 2000s San Francisco), the show followed Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub). A detective with crippling obsessive-compulsive disorder (Ocd) and social anxiety, Monk was once a police officer but retired after the death of his wife Trudy. He semi-comes out of retirement years later as a private consultant and that's when the series begins. Thanks to his performance as Monk, Shalhoub won three Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series, and the finale ("Mr. Monk and the End") broke cable ratings records.

In 2020, Shalhoub and his castmates starred in a mini-reunion for Peacock, "Monk In Quarantine." Monk, an infamous germaphobe, goes the extra mile with safety precautions during the Covid-19 pandemic while his friends check in on him over Zoom. Evidently,...
