Robert Eggers' 2 Count Orlok Teases Make Nosferatu A Lot Scarier Than The Original
Image
Robert Eggers continues to tease his upcoming horror movie Nosferatu, and two recent teases about Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgrd) make his version a lot scarier than the original. 2024 has been a big year for cinema, with a variety of stories that have earned the praise of critics and general audiences. One of 2024s most anticipated horror movies is Robert Eggers Nosferatu, a remake of the 1922 German film of the same name by F. W. Murnau, which is an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stokers 1897 novel Dracula.

Nosferatu tells the story of Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp), a young woman married to Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult), who is sent on a business trip to Transylvania to visit Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgrd). Orlok is a vampire, and he becomes infatuated with Ellen after seeing a photo of her. What follows is a tale of obsession and fear, as Orlok unleashes horror around Ellen and her loved ones.

How Self-Proclaimed Scaredy-Cat Melissa Barrera Became the Face of Modern Horror
Image
Some people are born with an affinity for the darker things in life. Its easy to imagine David Cronenberg watching Nosferatu while still in diapers or a prepubescent Wes Craven studying serial killers. But that wasnt the case with Melissa Barrera. And yet, the 34-year-old Mexican actor has become a face of modern horror. With lead roles in the last two Scream movies, Universals Dracula retelling, Abigail, and her current film, the romance creature feature, Your Monster, she is very much entrenched in the darkness now.

Nosferatu Remake Was Inspired by Chilling Real-Life Events
Image
F. W. Murnaus silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror owes an insurmountable debt to author Bram Stokers 1897 classic novel, Dracula. However, director Robert Eggers finds additional inspiration in more modern vampire occurrences. And the filmmakers updated Nosferatu actually pulled from these newer stories, which were written during this century, to complement his vision.

And while Nosferatu might be dropping into theaters this Christmas, there isnt anything festive about the real-life tales Eggers tapped into in order to differentiate his spine-tingling storytelling from the ancient vampires sordid history. That includes Murnau adapting his 1922 work from the pages of Stoker's book without asking for permission to use the material from the late author's widow, Florence Balcombe. Eggers elaborated on Nosferatu's inspirations in a brand-new interview with Vanity Fair:

Even as recently as the early 2000s, there have been vampire occurrences. There was a strigoi [a.k.a. an undead being] occurrence in southern Romania, someone's...

10 Underrated Vampire Movies That Deserve Much More Love
Image
This article mentions suicide.

Vampire films are one of the oldest genres of horror movies to grace the silver screen, and it's no surprise why. A good vampire flick can be addictive and fantastical, leaving the audience wanting more from the mystical underworld in the story. Over time, vampire films grew in versatility, from the seriousness of Francis Ford Coppola's Gothic hit, Bram Stoker's Dracula, to the angsty vampire romance of the Twilight series.

As pop culture's obsession with vampires grows with Hollywood, many underrated vampire films can fly under the radar. Though less popular than some of the bigger vampire classics and series, many of these hidden gems bring something fresh and unique to Hollywood's fascination with these monsters. For example, films like Queen of the Damned expand upon the mythology of Interview with the Vampire, and Nosferatu introduces audiences to the Dracula-alternative, German depiction of vampires.

Robert Eggers’ ‘Nosferatu’ Enters the Oscar Race, Fangs and All
Image
Robert Eggers puts another woman (Lily-Rose Depp) under assault in his sexy and frightening take on “Nosferatu.” The “Northman” and “The Witch” director first saw F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent vampire film when he was nine years old on a scratchy old VHS tape off a 16mm print, as he told moderator Guillermo del Toro at a DGA screening packed with Academy members and critics on Thursday night. Directors John Landis, Richard Kelly, and J.C. Chandor were among the attendees chatting up Eggers afterward.

“It had a magical quality,” said Eggers of the tape. “It stayed with me.” He went on to play Count Orlok in his own high school play of “Nosferatu,” and his background as a stage and production designer before becoming a feature director is on full display here.

Focus Features is releasing the gothic horror film wide as Christmas counterprogramming on December 25, which explains why “Nosferatu” was not presented at festivals,...

The First Reactions To Bill Skarsgard's Nosferatu Have Critics United
Image
Some lucky critics got to see an early screening of Robert Eggers' take on the classic vampire tale "Nosferatu" — and they all say it freaking rules.

The film, which stars Bill Skårsgard as the titular bloodsucker alongside Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and Willem Dafoe (among many others), is already earning raves from the fortunate folks who got to see it first. "'Nosferatu:' strangely comforting this week to watch a film that feels conjured from the darkest depths of pure evil," critic Jordan Raup wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). "Eggers' most assured work, one in which you can feel his obsessions flow through every nocturnal frame. Lily Rose-Depp and Bill Skarsgard are out of this world." Carlos Aguilar agreed, saying, "After a few months I can finally share I loved ['Nosferatu']. It further crystallizes Eggers' exploration of evil as an elemental force, as inherent to existence as desire,...

Bela Lugosi's 10 Best Horror Movies, Ranked
Image
One of the most celebrated names associated with the genre, the late, great Bla Lugosi is regarded as horror royalty to this day. Starring in some of the most revered cinematic offerings that the golden age of horror had to offer and renowned for his frequent collaboration with fellow horror icon Boris Karloff, the Hungarian-American actor announced his arrival on the scene in Hollywood during the 1930s with Tod Browning's Dracula - a legendary role that he is now virtually synonymous with - and never looked back.

While he often lamented the fact that he was forever typecast as a villain courtesy of his thick accent and imposing physical appearance, Lugosi embraced this status quo by breathing life into an array of the genre's most enduring dastardly characters. While many of his films were decidedly not perfect, the actor provided the foundations for many of horror's most archetypal character molds,...

‘Nosferatu’ First Reactions: ‘Seductively Macabre,’ ‘Erotic,’ ‘Pure Evil,’ and ‘Goes Harder Than Any Other Horror Film This Year’
Image
Robert Eggers’ gothic tale of obsession “Nosferatu” had its first screenings in New York City and Los Angeles on Thursday, November 7, including an L.A. Academy screening moderated by Guillermo del Toro. Early reactions are in for the 19th-century period piece horror about the title vampire’s (Bill Skarsgård) obsession with a woman named Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp). Nicholas Hoult plays her husband Thomas, sent to Transylvania to ink a real estate contract with Nosferatu, only to end up signing away his marriage and his wife’s soul. But is it not Ellen who was luring Nosferatu to her all along? The rest of the English-accented cast in the period-detailed gothic horror movie includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson.

On Threads, IndieWire’s Anne Thompson wrote, “Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is a period delight, a fantastic horror tale exquisitely mounted and efficiently told. It’s historically authentic with a strong English-accented cast.

Nosferatu first reactions: One of Robert Eggers’ best might be heading to the Oscars
Image
You have such a beautiful neck…and as it seems, Robert Eggers’ latest, Nosferatu, is living its mark on audiences. That might feel like a pun, but this film might be contending for one of the best of the year.

With just three films to his name so far, Robert Eggers quickly solidified himself as one of the premiere horror directors out there — and one isn’t even close to being in that genre: The Northman. However, Eggers might be heading towards the Oscars stage with Nosferatu, as it is earning some serious praise early on. Check out some of the initial reactions from social media, starting off with our very own Jimmy O’s take:

Our own @jimmytotheo says @Nosferatu is a stunning work of gothic horror. Beautiful performances throughout, however Lily-Rose Depp is simply luminous and Bill Skarsgard brings terror to the screen yet wraps it all in a layered character.

Why Nosferatu Didnt Film In Draculas Real Castle Explained By Robert Eggers
Image
Nosferatu remake writer and director Robert Eggers explains his decision not to film at the notorious Bran Castle in Transylvania, the place famously associated with the real-life Vlad the Impaler. Based on the original silent film made in 1929 by F.W. Murnau, the new Nosferatu will follow an ancient Transylvanian vampire as he stalks a young woman in 19th century Germany. Instead of opting to shoot at Bran Castle. Eggers chose Hunedoara/Corvin's Castle, located in Hunedoara, Romania.

According to Vanity Fair, Eggers selected the Hunedoara Castle due to its architectural complexity and its historical ties to Transylvanian lore, a fitting tribute to the eerie beauty that inspired Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. Bran Castle, appropriately recognized as Dracula's Castle, is often the popular choice for vampire films; however, Eggers believes Hunedoara Castle more closely represents the crumbling, haunting structure that he envisions. Eggers also incorporated other locations across Europe, such...

Thats Never Been Done: How Nosferatus New Count Orlok Look Breaks Ground For Dracula Stories Explained By Director
Image
Nosferatu (2024) director Robert Eggers shares new teases about Count Orlok's appearance in the upcoming film, explaining why audiences have never seen anything like it in a Dracula movie before. Loosely based on Bram Stoker's Dracula and serving as an adaptation of the 1922 German film of the same name, Nosferatu's story follows Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp), a haunted young woman, as she finds herself the object of a terrifying vampire's infatuation. Bill Skarsgrd plays Count Orlok, the vampire, in the film, and marketing materials have thus far kept his appearance hidden.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Eggers provides the best idea yet of what Count Orlok will actually look like in Nosferatu, teasing that he approached the vampire in a way that all previous Dracula films did not. The director calls Orlok "more of a folk vampire," meaning that he looks like an actual corpse rather than a more traditional movie vampire.

Unique Plot

It is clear Ghosts has found a winning formula with its unique premise centered around eight spirits who are all tied to a Bed and Breakfast in the countryside.

(Bertrand Calmeau/CBS)

And yes — the plot may be simple, but it’s a brilliant vehicle for storytelling with ghosts taking center stage.

Robert Eggers' Nosferatu Will End A Tiring Decades-Old Vampire Trend (With A Clever Twist)
Image
Robert Eggers Nosferatu is one of the most anticipated horror movies of 2024, and one of Eggers teases reveals his movie will end a tiring, decades-old vampire trend but with a clever and necessary twist. Joining the ongoing trend of remakes is the 1922 German horror classic Nosferatu, directed by F. W. Murnau. Nosferatu is an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stokers 1897 novel Dracula, and it has gotten a couple of remakes over the years. Eggers Nosferatu keeps the premise of the original movie, giving it his trademark style of gothic horror.

Nosferatu tells the story of Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp), a young woman haunted by a terrifying presence. Said entity is the vampire Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgrd), who becomes infatuated with her, unleashing horror around her and her loved ones, among them her husband, Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult). David J. Skal: The Monster Kid Who Gave Classic Monsters New Life

In honor of the Day of the Dead, I want to pay tribute to horror historian, author, researcher, and documentary filmmaker David J. Skal, who suddenly passed on New Year's Day of this year*. Considering how important Day of the Dead is to me culturally as a Mexican American and how influential David’s work was on so many people, including myself, I wanted to honor him, his work, and his impact on this day.

Early Life:

Born in 1952 in Ohio, David grew up as a Monster Kid of the 1950s and 1960s American monster boom. Like other Monster Kids of the era, David nurtured his love for horror through watching classic horror films on TV, reading the iconic Famous Monsters of Filmland, and the Aurora model kits.

1992s Dracula Changed a Huge Part of the Novel and It Makes Total Sense
Image
Bram Stoker's novel Dracula has had its fair share of adaptations and off-shoots over the years. The late-Victorian novel built on the Gothic tradition and introduced a now iconic monster: Count Dracula. Horror, as fans know it today, was in its infancy in the late 1800s, and Stoker was one of the first to try his hand at the rising literary form. Stoker could potentially be credited with bringing the vampire myth to the mainstream in Western popular culture. One of the earliest versions of Dracula on-screen was Bela Lugosi's portrayal of the Transylvanian nobleman in 1931's Dracula.

Other actors after Lugosi took on the mantle, like Christopher Lee in 1958, Gary Oldman in 1992, and even Gerard Butler in 2000. But it was Oldman's portrayal in director Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula that became one of the most financially successful and memorable iterations of the famed creature. Changes...

Irish Vampire Movie ‘Feed’ Pits Social Media Influencers Up Against Vampires
Bram Stoker
Based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula as well as an Irish legend, the upcoming vampire movie Feed has begun production ahead of the American Film Market next week, Deadline reports.

From director Marco van Belle (Mercy), the upcoming vampire movie Feed is being shot in Ireland. Fitting, given that the film is inspired by the Irish myth of the Dearg Due.

According to Wikipedia (linked above), “Dearg-due, an Irish name meaning ‘red bloodsucker,’ is a female demon that seduces men and then drains them of their blood.”

“The film follows a group of twenty something social media influencers who spend a weekend at a remote contemporary house in an Irish forest, and must fight for their lives when they awaken the world’s original vampire from her slumber.”

Grace Collender (Fréwaka) stars alongside Clinton Liberty, Daisy Jelley, Niamh Hogan, Rhys Mannion and Oskar Smith.

“With people using social media to...

Image
Greg Hildebrandt, the admired artist and illustrator who created movie posters for the original Star Wars and Clash of the Titans, drew Marvel characters and designed iconic 1970s calendars that celebrated the Lord of the Rings trilogy, has died. He was 85.

Hildebrandt died in Denville, New Jersey, his son, Greg Jr., told The Hollywood Reporter. For the past five months, he had been dealing with a serious side effect from a heart medication.

The artist, who frequently partnered with his late twin brother, Tim Hildebrandt, also illustrated covers for DC Comics and trading cards for an epic 1994 Marvel Masterpieces set; painted artwork for Dungeons & Dragons calendars; and designed covers for the 1981 Black Sabbath album Mob Rules and many LPs from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Without having access to film stills and publicity photos and given a very tight deadline by 20th Century Fox, the brothers painted the “Style B” poster for the U.

Francis Ford Coppola to receive AFI Life Achievement Award
Image
Francis Ford Coppola’s projects may be few and far between nowadays and his most recent film, passion project Megalopolis was a flop with audiences and critics (our own Chris Bumbray gave it a 5/10), but the guy still has a staggering presence and remains one of the most respected and influential filmmakers of his generation. As such, the industry is prepared to honor Coppola with the AFI Life Achievement Award next year.

In a statement, chair of the AFI Board of Trustees and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, said, “Francis Ford Coppola is a peerless artist – one who has created seminal works in the canon of American film, and has also inspired generations of filmmakers who now embody his artistry and his independent spirit. AFI is honored to present him with the 50th AFI Life Achievement Award.”

Like so many, Francis Ford Coppola came up through the Roger Corman system, delivering...

This Pre-Code Shocker Rivals Any of the Classic Universal Monster Movies
Image
In 1931, the classic movie monster cycle began when Universal Studios released both Dracula and Frankenstein. Paramount Pictures answered with their pre-Code Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, with Fredric Marchs ape-like sexually-predatory Hyde winning him a Best Actor Oscar. According to film historian Gregory Mank's book Angels and Ministers of Grace Defend Us!, Paramount wanted more of the same human-hybrid horror and sex, so the studio bought H.G. Wells book The Island of Dr. Moreau and began developing a film.

Maika Monroe reteams with Watcher director Chloe Okuno for vampire movie Brides
Image
At one time, Watcher director Chloe Okuno was attached to direct the fourth entry in Netflix’s R.L. Stine-inspired Fear Street franchise – but while Fear Street: Prom Queen has made its way through production without her involvement (the movie ended up being directed by Matthew Palmer), Okuno has been busy getting another genre project set up. One that will reunite her with Watcher star Maika Monroe. This one is called Brides, and Deadline reports that it’s currently in pre-production, aiming to start filming in the Spring of 2025.

Scripted by Okuno, Brides draws inspiration from Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. Set in 1960s Italy, it will show us what happens when Sally Bishop (Monroe) and her husband travel to a remote villa in the wake of Sally’s nervous breakdown. The villa’s owner, a mysterious count, takes a peculiar interest in Sally. But he gets far more than...

Longlegs Star Maika Monroe to Lead Vampire Gothic Film Brides
Image
Longlegs star Maika Monroe finds her next project in her busy horror schedule, this time a twisted take on Bram Stoker's classic vampire tale. Monroe, who made her name known in the cult classic It Follows, continues to find herself enraptured by terrifying tales that flip the genre on its head. Next time she's on the big screen, Monroe will encounter an "Eden of vampire brides" in a new film from FilmNation Entertainment.

Via Deadline, Monroe is set to star in Brides, directed by Chloe Okuno (Watcher). Currently in pre-production, the upcoming vampire flick is produced by Anthony Bregman and Stefanie Azpiazu through Likely Story, who describe the project as gothic, glamorous, and gory." In many ways, it will subvert expectations of Bram Stoker's Dracula by seemingly focusing on the vampiric brides, which come into contact with Monroe's Sally Bishop when she and her husband go on a trip.

If there’s any genre in film that it’s easy to be a snob about, it’s horror.

I try really hard not to be, but it’s a challenge.

With decades of incredible films shaping my expectations, it’s sometimes difficult to love new movies in this niche.

And look, I’ve accepted that I’ll never get to experience watching The Exorcist for the first time again.

But over time, it got more and more difficult to find horror films that could truly rattle me.

And yet … I curated this list because 2024 has blown me away with its horror offerings.

Keanu Reeves Cites Monty Python as His Biggest Creative Inspiration
Image
Monty Python have obviously inspired a number of comedians, writers, filmmakers and aggrieved garbage dump custodians, but it turns out that they also had a big impact on the actor best known for gunning down countless Russian mobsters and downloading kung-fu directly into his cerebral cortex: Keanu Reeves.

Reeves recently attended the Southbank Literature Festival to promote his new novel The Book of Elsewhere, along with his co-author China Miéville. When the moderator asked Reeves about which work of art from his youth “has been the biggest inspiration” in his work, the actor, at first, couldn’t come up with an answer. But then he admitted that it was actually Monty Python.

“It was such a wonderful influence and model of storytelling,” Reeves said of the iconic comedy troupe, noting that their humor “was so physical but also so intellectual and social.”

This might seem a little bit surprising, considering...

Hammer: Heroes, Legends, and Monsters is set to offer a unique tribute to legendary actor Peter Cushing, best known for his roles as Grand Moff Tarkin in George Lucas’ Star Wars. The Netflix Series to Watch Instead of Stephen King's Salem's Lot
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Vampire fiction found its definitive rendition in the late Victorian Era when Bram Stroker published his novel Dracula in 1897, bringing together eroticism, gothic horror, and a demonic contagion for an unholy union. With cinema capturing the imagination of the masses in the twentieth century, Count Dracula soon became the most recognizable vampire around the globe, with some preferring the sophistication of Bela Lugosi and others the animalistic drive of Max Schrecks Nosferatu. But most stories confined the vampire lord to the past, begging the question of what if he had landed in America in the present day. This is the question that the "King of Horror," Stephen King, answers in his book Salem's Lot.

Salem's Lot came when the vampire trope was entering a phase of fatigue after a string of lackluster sci-fi vampire literature and raunchy B-movies. An immediate bestseller on arrival,...
