FAQ

Un chien andalou

To be truthful: Yes and No... The meaning of it is that is has no meaning. Luis Buñuel insisted that there was no meaning, and the film is an example of how our minds can interpret things with no meaning and give them meaning. Most of it was from Buñuel and Salvador Dalí's dreams, but they both made sure that everything in the film would directly oppose what was considered to be normal, acceptable cinema at the time.

"Un chien Andalou" literally means "An Anadalusian dog"- Andalusia is a region in Southern Spain, near Dali's childhood home. The title is partly based on random free-association, and partly based on the Spanish idiom "the Andalusian dog howls- someone has died!". Like the film's plot and imagery, the title is less about literal meaning, and more about evoking a certain response in the viewer, in a vague, dream-like, non-linear way.
