- The Doctor, Mickey and Rose land on a spaceship in the 51st century only to find 18th century Versailles on board, the time of Madame De Pompadour! To find out what's going on the Doctor must enter Versailles and save Madame De Popmpadour but it turns into an emotional roller coaster for the Doctor.
- With almost everyone on Earth now recast in his image, The Master controls the Earth. He's shocked however when he realises one person hasn't changed; Donna Noble. The Doctor soon understands what the pounding in the Master's head is; it's the Time Lords, who are trying to return and re-establish Gallifrey. If they succeed, it'll mean the Last Great Time War will re-start, and all the horrors which came with it. In order to stop Rasillon's mad plan, the Doctor must make a choice. Finally, the Ood's prophecy for the Doctor becomes true, and he takes the TARDIS on a trip, to see friends for one last time, before he's to regenerate.
- Suspecting Persie of passing on information to the Germans, Sir Hallam ends their affair and joins his wife in trying to sober up Pritchard, who soon afterwards goes missing. Rose tells Johnnie that the butler is a reformed alcoholic who is clearly ashamed of his lapse. Casper visits Lady Agnes to tell her he is returning to the States, by which time Sir Hallam is aware of Persie's treachery, just as Lady Agnes is of the affair. With nobody to support her, Persie kills herself before she can be arrested. Beryl and Harry get married, planning to emigrate to America, and Pritchard returns for the wedding. As war is declared, Pritchard becomes an air raid warden, Blanche joins the fire service, and Johnnie is called up. The Hollands agree to stay together in London, but Lady Agnes's trust in her husband is severely compromised.
- With war inevitable and her marriage in ruins, Lady Agnes takes her children to the countryside, leaving her husband to carry on with her sister, in an affair which soon becomes noticed downstairs. Harry and Beryl get engaged and plan to emigrate to America, though Beryl almost backs out when she learns of her boyfriend's fling with Persie. Harry blackmails Sir Hallam into giving him the money for the passage in return for keeping quiet about his affair with Persie. Pritchard forms a romance with lady's-maid Violet Whisset when they are chosen to organize the annual servants' ball, but she rejects him on learning that he was a conscientious objector in the Great War. Later, a returning Lady Agnes finds Pritchard ill with drink and emotional on the area steps.
- England, 1651. A deadly highwayman known only as 'The Knightmare' plagues the dark streets of London, his fire-breathing accomplice by his side.
