      Clete Larkin, an executive with an insurance company, is murdered by a double-crossing partner in crime. That person is sociopath Cam Wheeler, who just got out of prison. The police rule Larkin's death an accident, but Larkin's widow doesn't believe it, so she hires Barnaby Jones to investigate. Larkin had been providing Wheeler and his gang of thieves the plans for the security systems of several jewelry stores and other insured businesses. But Wheeler learned that Larkin had moved in on Wheeler's girlfriend while he was in prison, he was determined to end that relationship. There is tension between Wheeler and girlfriend Gina Nelson. There is also tension between Wheeler and the other gang members, who feel they are not getting a large enough cut of the loot. That tension boils over during their final heist of a high-end jewelry store, at the same time that Barnaby Jones is closing in on the gang.
