- William 'Bill' Phillips was born on 1 June 1908 in Washington, District of Columbia, USA. He was an actor and writer, known for Living in a Big Way (1947), Detective Story (1951) and The Hidden Eye (1945). He was married to Eve Phillips. He died on 27 June 1957 in Los Angeles, California, USA.
- Clarence Malcolm Lowry was born in New Brighton, England on July 28, 1909. His parents were Arthur Lowry, a wealthy Liverpool businessman, and his wife Evelyn. Lowry was educated at Cambridge, and worked briefly as a merchant seaman. He was married twice. His first novel, 'Ultramarine', published in England, was heavily influenced by the poet Conrad Aiken. His breakthough novel was _Under The Volcano (1984)_ , an account of the last day of an alcoholic British ex-Consul to Mexico. Lowry died in England in 1957 after a drinking binge with wife Margerie.
