American character actor primarily of Western "sidekick" roles. Born John Forest Knight in Fairmont, West Virginia, Knight joined a traveling minstrel show as a musician at age 15. He attended The University of West Virginia as a law student, supporting himself as the drummer in his own band. Finding music more rewarding, he left school and played on the vaudeville and cabaret circuits. He appeared in Earl Carroll's Vanities of 1927 and on Broadway as a musical performer in "Here's Howe" and "Ned Wayburn's Gambols." He also played drums for the Irving Aaronson and George Olsen big bands. He appeared in a few short films for MGM and Paramount from 1928 to 1931, performing his "Little Piano" act. Mae West saw Knight in vaudeville and championed him for her film She Done Him Wrong (1933) and gave him his first substantive film role. His comic style and the soft voice which had given him his nickname stood him in good stead in movies, and he appeared in nearly 200 films over the next thirty years. His singing was a memorable part of the films The Trail of the Lonesome Pine (1936) and The Shepherd of the Hills (1941), but it was as a Western sidekick that he gained his greatest fame. He played the comic pal of Johnny Mack Brown and other cowboy heroes in scores of Westerns, and was listed among the Top Ten Money-Making Western Stars in 1940. In the 1950s, he gained new audiences with his sidekick role on Buster Crabbe's TV series Captain Gallant of the Foreign Legion (1955). He retired in 1960, but continued to make occasional appearances. He died in his sleep at the Motion Picture Country Home and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California at 74, survived by his wife, actress Patricia Ryan (née Thelma de Long). He is buried in an unmarked grave next to the grave of comedian Maxie Rosenbloom at Valhalla Memorial Park in Burbank, California.- Actress

Mary Lou Retton (born January 24, 1968) is a retired American gymnast. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, she won a gold medal in the individual all-around competition, as well as two silver medals and two bronze medals. Her performance made her one of the most popular athletes in the United States.
Retton was the first ever American woman to win the all-around gold medal at the Olympics and was the only one to do so for twenty years. She is credited with being a pioneering figure in American women's gymnastics, including by the four American women who have since equaled her feat consecutively: Carly Patterson (Athens in 2004), Nastia Liukin (2008 in Beijing), Gabby Douglas (2012 in London) and Simone Biles (2016 in Rio de Janeiro). Twice during that span, Americans also took silver as part of a one-two finish: Shawn Johnson in 2008 and Aly Raisman in 2016. Furthermore, prior to Retton's Olympic triumph, no American woman had won all-around gold at the World Championships; since then, seven Americans have done so a combined eleven times - in chronological order, Kim Zmeskal, Shannon Miller (twice), Chellsie Memmel, Johnson, Bridget Sloan, Jordyn Wieber and Simone Biles (three times).- Producer

Early rock pioneer Johnnie Johnwon was born in West Virginia in 1924. He taught himself to play piano as a youth. When World War II broke out he moved to Detroit, Michigan, to get a job in the defense plants there. In 1943 he joined the US Marines and played in a Marine "big and" that toured and performed in the Pacific theater. When the war ended he moved to Chicago, and started hanging out in the city's famed blues scene, eventually becoming acquainted with such blues legends as Muddy Waters and Little Milton and even playing with them at times. He then moved to St. Louis, MO, and worked with Albert King. He soon started his own band, the Johnnie Johnson Trio, which played mostly jazz and R&B instead of blues. In 1952 Johnson hired a relatively unknown country/western singer named Chuck Berry to play a New Year's Eve party with the trio. They hit it off almost immediately and collaborated for the next 30 years on some of the most famous rock songs of all time. Johnson would compose the music for a particular song on his piano, and then Berry would adapt it to his guitar and write the lyrics. From that collaboration came such classics as "No Particular Place to Go" and "Roll Over, Beethoven"--in fact, Berry's classic "Johnny B. Good" was written by Berry as a tribute to Johnson. In the 1970s Johnson, wearing of touring, left Berry and worked with a St. Louis group called Sounds of the City. Johnson later took over the group and renamed it The Magnificent Five. He still continued to perform with Berry occasionally, and appeared in a documentary about Berry, Chuck Berry: Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll (1987). In 1987 he released a solo album, "Blue Hand Johnnie" and four years later came out with "Johnnie B. Bad".
