A little cringey
24 March 2024
This film relies a little too heavily on nostalgia for the original movie. McKenna Grace and james Acaster were standouts for me, but the others were pretty weak. It felt very safe and intentionally tame, other than the bizarre teenage romance (?) sub-plot, as if it were made for children, but at the same time a lot of the references and jokes rely on knowledge of the original movie, or on culture of the 80s and 90s Especially using the original 1980s song lyrics a part of the dialog? Why?

I enjoyed the historical elements, and the linguistic mystery, and the art/sculpture, and some of the visuals were good.

I wish these remakes would not be afraid of redoing the theme songs. Indiana jones had the same problem. The theme songs sound horribly dated. Last years mission impossible features a fresh take on the familiar theme song, making it feel new. Using the original 1980s track is a gamble that didn't pay off. It doesn't have the same timeless quality that some songs from the 70s and 80s have.
