It's bad until you remember the series sucked too

Warning: Spoilers
I think every person who rated this movie a 1 needs to remember that it's meant to be for kids, however I think a good movie should appeal to older audiences as well. This movie doesn't do that at all. I have a lot of points to make as a big Miraculous fan who also hates the series. I'll do Pros first.

First of all, I appreciate what the film does to Gabriel's character. The ending of the series was obnoxious and his character in the series is obnoxious too. The movie actually paints him in an incredibly good light. I remember watching the scene near the end with him and Cat Noir and being almost brought to tears. I think it was really nice to see his character understand the errors of his ways when he realized who he is harming with his actions, and how maybe if his son can move on so can he. I also found his character design in this style of animation to be entirely less horrifying than it is with his scary individual teeth in the series.

I also like that the movie really avoids the elongated, 9 year, five season, love square. Don't get me wrong, it was still eye rolling but i'm ecstatic it got a conclusion at the end.

The Mime and Magician villains were the best character design of the whole franchise as well. I gasped seeing them on screen because they were soooo visually stunning, especially how their traits were incorporated into their attacks. The Gargoyle villain was also incredibly cool and the whole cathedral meeting scene was very good looking as well. Cat Noirs costume having little faint sparkles and little paw pads was verrryyy adorable. On this same subject a lot of the characters look better in the movie (obviously because of the higher budget) but this is where i start getting into my cons.

I found the same face syndrome really visually ugly. Marinette's mom looked like a child, and the constant male background characters with the same too-close together eyes just confusing. When we got to the part where Cat Noir was in the subway, That little kid in the background that looked exactly like his younger model was kinda confusing as well. I disliked Alyas hair a lottt, in fact a lot of the hairstyles in the show was very hit or miss. However, i don't have a lot of room to complain as the series is wayyyyyyyy worse.

I also really hated Cat Noir in this movie at a lot of points. His banter with Ladybug felt very two dimensional. The closest I can relate it to is in community when the study group complains about Jeff and Britta's gross flirtatious argueing. Him faking being attacked to get Ladybugs attention was insane to me. Every joke he made fell flat compared to his hilarious series counterpart and him calling Ladybug his sidekick immediately felt like a disservice to his character in the series because he always acted like Ladybugs equal, however I think it does show his adjustment to working in a pair as he was isolated a lot as a child. The transition of tension between him and ladybug to romance was abrupt and cheesy but their romance besides banter in the show was actually adorable. I did like the added detail that he's always listening to music. It felt very evangeliony which I thought was kinda cool, and the scene where Adrien tells Marinette about his mom was kinda sweet. Oh but Plagg. Don't get me started on that guy. I had to skip every scene of his because i could not handle the fart jokes. He looked so cute when he got on screen and I was so excited! And then every scene he was in he was just disgusting. Also when did he like rotten cheese? The Plagg I know only likes the most expensive Camembert. Also me and my friends agreed that Tikki looked like an unborn fetus.

Ladybug is equally as bad. I genuinely think Marinette might be psychotic. She was so negative about having no friends when everyone is nice to her except Chloe and Sabrina? It was kinda weird to me especially since her relationship with Alya and Nino seemed just fine. Her transition from being an unwilling hero to accepting it also felt shallow and two dimensional. But again a kids show so i don't really care much about that. I just felt like her behavior at the beginning was annoying.

This was mostly just a rant, there's a lot more good things to say but also a lot more bad. I think it's a solid Movie for kids, and definitely a fantastic improvement from the series and enjoyable to watch, but had too many cringe moments to count. I think the only way to encapsulate my opinion of it is that i'll definitely be watching it for the third time.
