Review of Elles

Elles (1997)
7/10
sometimes, relationships are all that there is

While it's not a great movie, Luís Galvão Teles's "Elles" ("Women" in English) is the sort of movie that I wish there were more of. This focus on five friends in Lisbon has the feeling of a Pedro Almodóvar movie but definitely does its own thing. The main character is Linda (Carmen Maura), a TV host. Over the course of the movie, we get to know her friends (Miou-Miou, Marthe Keller, Marisa Berenson and Guesch Patti).

It's the sort of movie whose complexity defies description in a review. I will say that we get a deeper look at women's relationships with each other than you'll see in the average romcom, and in particular with women over the age of forty. This movie probably isn't available on any streaming platform, so you'll have to check out your neighborhood video store.

Marthe Keller is most recognizable to US audiences from "Marathon Man". Marisa Berenson is best known for her supporting roles in "Cabaret" and "Barry Lyndon" (her sister Berry was married to Anthony Perkins and got killed in the 9/11 attacks).
