I agree that this is the craziest plot line yet, but as for the question about anybody in school noticing, this is explained on their first meeting as the other guy having conveniently "just moved in". That, to me, at least, shows even more desperation. You know when you hear a line like this that even the writer knows how bad it is.
This is towards the end of the run, and I can see why Robert Reed had decided he'd had enough. Sherwood Schwartz obviously recycled this plot device from Gilligan's Island, where it was used, not once, but three times. But at least we knew Gilligan's Island was pure hooey. The Brady Bunch was supposed to be a comedic look at blended family life.
