Messing with monsters is never a good idea

Warning: Spoilers
A group of high school kids doing community service discover a flesh-eating female monster in an old building. They decide to capture and torment said monster. Moreover, the thing's angry older sister goes in search of her missing sibling and kills everyone who crosses her lethal path.

Writer/director Giddens Ko relates the absorbing story at a steady pace, maintains a dark and nihilistic tone throughout, delivers a handy helping of graphic gore, and even provides a potent and provocative subtext on mankind's shocking capacity for extreme cruelty. Kent Tsai makes a strong impression as sadistic bully Duan Ren-hao while Yu-Kai Teng also does well as persecuted wimp Lin Shu-wei. But this film's key triumph is how the two lady ghouls manage to be not only scary and ferocious, but also surprisingly sympathetic as well. The unexpectedly grim ending packs a devastating punch, too. A superior creature feature.
