Spite Marriage (1929) : Brief Review -

Buster Keaton's Last Silent is better as a Post-Marriage love story or Rom-Com than a Comedy. Another Keaton comedy which has left lots of influences and adaptable material to many Rom-Coms and i believe it has been used many times. I don't remember names of those films now but i can feel that i have seen similar storylines in many romantic comedy films. Spite Marriage is not about hysterics, hilariousness and loud gags but it is more about perfect balance of Romance and Comedy. An unimpressive but well intending man is given the chance to marry a popular actress, of whom he has been a hopeless fan. But what he doesn't realize is that he is being used to make the actress' old flame jealous. Post marriage scenario in this film is really heart winning. Keaton explores theatrical comedy as well as physical comedy. That drama scene is totally hilarious and it rides on only one man's shoulder despite the Big Crowd. That shows you why Keaton was the greatest comedian of his time. With Dorothy Sebestian's character some things go wrong but one good thing happens because of her character that it makes you feel compassionate about Keaton's character even before it actually strikes in the film. Apart from that drama scene, Spite Marriage gives another memorable scene, that Ship fight Sequence. It's full of comedy and action and it is amazingly shot. Rest of the characters in the film are okay to good, nothing sort of high claim. Sedwick and Keaton presents a nice Story, oh sorry a nice Rom-Com rather than a comedy. With little more space to comic situations, Spite Marriage would have been better as comedy, too. Nevertheless, a watchable flick anytime, anyday for anyone. Rom-com lovers would definitely like it.
