Pretty solid follow up to Menace 2 Society from The Hughes Brothers
8 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Dead Presidents is a pretty grim depiction of both the war in Vietnam and the aftermath taken from the point of view from a black man and his circle of friends from the Bronx. The Hugh Brothers pull no punches in showing the horrors of war. Plus they show the circumstances that lead to poverty and desperation that lead to a violent heist gone way wrong with bullet ridden corpses. Larenz Tate (from Menace...) is excellent and very sympathetic as the lead. Keith David is incredible as always and Chris Tucker is less annoying than usual. I prefer Menace 2 Society over this for sure, but Dead Presidents is a pretty solid, tragic and action packed picture bringing social commentary without being preachy and being entertaining and well performed as well.
