Interesting story, but pretty heavy

Welcome to New York chronicles the story of a French politician whose career gets threatened because of a rape accusation from a hotel maid. It was loosely based on a real scandal, but all the names were changed. If you remember the lawsuit against Dominique Strauss-Kahn, you'll know quite a bit about the movie already, but if you don't, you'll be surprised as the story unfolds.

One really nice aspect about this movie is that the supposed rape isn't shown. I've always held the opinion that showing something terrible in a movie still glorifies it, so even though there are many other sex scenes in this movie, the camera doesn't show anything that's not consensual. Also, since whether or not the rape actually happened is one of the questions the film brings up, it behooves the filmmakers to leave that scene up to the audience's imagination.

Gérard Depardieu plays the lead, and his long suffering wife is Jacqueline Bisset. While they're both effective in their roles, this probably shouldn't be the first movie of either that you watch. Jackie isn't really known for playing the ignored wife, humiliated by her husband's sexual exploits, and Gérard doesn't play someone particularly likable. Fans of both will be treated to great performances, as well as an interesting story with twists and turns.

Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to nudity and sex scenes, I wouldn't let my kids watch it.
