"What's new and exciting?" Detective Emily Edith is on a case in a closed Hasidic community. She must change her clothes and follow peculiar rules while living amongst the Hasidim in New York City in order to search for the culprit of a murder by "A Stranger Among Us". The murderer is the "stranger" in the apparent plot. However, Emily is the "stranger" in the subplot. She is invited to move into the home of the Rebbe. A Rebbe in the Hasidic community is the chief Rabbi, who is involved in all interactions with anyone in the society. While Emily learns about the Hasidic lifestyle, she encounters Ariel. Ariel is a Talmudic genius and his life is bounded by his Hebraic studies of the wisdom of the Kabbalah. They exchange some interesting ideas and interpretations of life and find each other attractive. Alas, Ariel is forbidden to engage with Emily on any intimate level but is truly intrigued by this Shiksah. Ariel meets his intended bride who arrives from France and despite feeling torn by his thoughts about Emily, he weds his predestined bride. He discovers the bride is indeed his Bashert - his fate. Emily, the stranger, is a guest at the wedding briefly but curiously disappears before the ritual is complete. Intriguing storyline with a bit of a twist.
