I won't comment on the quality of the film except to say that it's "fine". However, I have to ask WHY make one more version of this story that has already been told so many times, without saying or doing or showing us something NEW?
I am a big fan of the musical, and have never read the book. However, after seeing Claude Lelouche's 1995 French adaptation of the novel, this "straight on" version pales in comparison.
Do yourself a favor-- rent Claude's version AFTER you have seen this one.
