Image
Conrad Harrigan, patriarch of Paramount+’s MobLand, has built a criminal empire that — if Fisk doesn’t get to it first — could very likely outlive him. Which raises a salient point: Which of Conrad’s children is best suited to run the family business in his stead?

Let’s just go ahead and ignore the cliffhanger that ended last week’s episode, in which Conrad’s son, Brendan, and daughter, Seraphina, were in the middle of a shootout organized by their father’s biggest rival. Let’s assume for now that all Harrigan offspring are on the table — not that...

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Jo & Link’s Wedding Becomes a Musical Affair
Image
[Warning: The following post contains Major spoilers for Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 17, “Love You Like a Love Song.”] There weren’t wedding bells at the wedding of Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) and Atticus Lincoln (Chris Carmack), but there was an entirely different kind of music at play. After Link spent the day stressing over his inability to write meaningful vows for the slapdash ceremony — while Jo tried to keep his mom’s worst blue eyeshadow and borrowed veil instincts at bay — all day, Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) gave him a pep talk and advice to communicate in a way that felt more natural to him. For Link, that meant toting an acoustic guitar to the altar and playing a song that was made just for the occasion. The lyrics for the song were: Strumming this guitar may seem like I don’t know what to say, But I swear I have the answers to the questions of the day.

[Warning: The following post contains Major spoilers for Doctor Odyssey Episode 17, “The Wave.”] The penultimate episode of Doctor Odyssey is bound to send shockwaves through the show’s fan community because it puts Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson) in very serious danger. Johnson didn’t want to use anything fancy to pull it off. He wanted to dig into what a “Poker Face” episode looks like, and maintain that vintage aesthetic that had been established in...

‘Forever’: Mara Brock Akil on How the Period Before George Floyd’s Murder, the Dangers of Smartphones and Judy Blume Inspired Her Black Teen Love Story
Image
As it turns out, what it’s like to be a teenager hasn’t changed all that much since 1975.

That’s what Mara Brock Akil concluded in the process of making a modern-day Netflix series out of “Forever,” the groundbreaking Judy Blume novel about high-schoolers preparing to have sex for the first time. Katherine and Michael, Blume’s protagonists, were sorting out their feelings for each other only 15 years after the Fda approved birth control pills and just two years after Roe v. Wade solidified the right to abortion nationwide. Akil’s Justin (Michael Cooper Jr.) and Keisha (Lovie Simone...

WGA Members Face a ‘Deeply Uncomfortable’ Vote to Expel Two of Their Own
Image
Members of the Writers Guild of America West are engaged in unusual vote this week on whether to banish two of their own — Roma Roth and Edward Drake — for allegedly performing “writing services” during the 2023 strike.

The membership is also being asked to uphold disciplinary moves against two others, Julie Bush and Tim Doyle, that fall short of expulsion. The vote will conclude at 2 p.m. on Friday.

In an email to members on Wednesday, WGA Board Member Rob Forman acknowledged that it’s an awkward situation.

“I know it’s deeply uncomfortable to vote on disciplining other writers, especially during this horrible contraction,...

A Deadly American Marriage Documentary is About Jason Corbett and Molly Martens
Image
When Jason Corbett, an Irish widower and father of two young children, found love again with his American au pair, Molly Martens, in 2008, their relationship seemed ripped from the pages of a storybook. The couple, along with Jason’s kids, Jack and Sarah, moved from Ireland to North Carolina to build a new life together. But on Aug. 2, 2015, their idyllic tale took a dark turn when Jason was killed in a violent altercation at home. The perpetrators? Molly and her father, Thomas Martens — a former FBI agent.

Molly and Thomas claimed self-defense, the former eventually pleading no contest and the latter guilty to voluntary manslaughter in 2023 to avoid a trial, but their release from prison in June 2024 reignited questions over the incident’s true nature. Was this actually self-defense, as they argued, or a calculated killing? For some, the intricacies of Jason and Molly’s marriage add...

Why Netflix’s ‘Adolescence’ Had a ‘No Dicks’ Policy
Image
The golden rule to treat others as you would like to be treated doesn’t always hold true in life. But it was a necessity on “Adolescence.” The demands of shooting episode-length single takes require weeks of rehearsal and the kind of intuitive, balletic coordination we normally only see on sports fields – and unlike on a lot of sports teams and film sets, co-creator, executive producer, and star Stephen Graham was in a position to make sure there were no dicks on the team.

To its absolute credit, the Netflix miniseries is a meditation on the fallout after a 13-year-old boy (Owen Cooper) murders one of his female classmates (Emilia Holliday) rather than a whodunit or a breathlessly titillating true-crime rehash of the violent event. Speaking to IndieWire on an episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit Podcast, Graham said that the idea to interrogate how incel culture online leads to violence...

Yes, ‘The Studio’ Really Did Recreate the Golden Globes from Scratch. Here’s How
Image
Let’s first get this out of the way. Episode 8 of “The Studio,” aptly named “The Golden Globes,” was not filmed during the real Golden Globes, nor did the Apple TV+ series strike a deal with the yearly awards ceremony to shoot the entire 31-minute episode on its set. Instead, they rented out the Beverly Hilton ballroom, where the Globes are hosted, and built their own awards ceremony from scratch.

“We were adamant that it had to be shot at the Beverly Hilton in the actual room where the Golden Globes were,” said series co-creator, co-director, and star Seth Rogen, when he was on an upcoming episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “I’d say rightfully, a lot of our producers and partners, and the studio, were like, ‘Why? Who will know the difference?’ And we were like, ’It just has to.’ I thought a cool part of the show is to really give people,...

The Price Is Right saw an $80,000 winner who screeched like a pterodactyl after winning a car. He also got some help from host Drew Carey after the game malfunctioned in the Wednesday, May 7, episode. Ala won the third item up for bid — a pair of Apple tablets that were worth $2,398. Ala had the highest bid at $1,500, so he won the tablets and the round and got a chance to play for even more prizes. He played Gridlock for a 2025 Nissan Versa Sr with splash guards and interior accent lighting. Gridlock is a pricing game that is usually played for a car. There are seven mini cars on a track. The first car is dropped down to the second track, which is the first number of the car. The contestant has to pick two more cars that each have two numbers on them, to determine the price of the vehicle. For Ala,...

Paramount Global, under scrutiny as it works to complete a deal that will have it acquired by Skydance Media, said it swung to a profit in its fiscal first quarter, boosted by revenue increases from its film and streaming businesses. The company’s largest operation, its TV networks, grappled with downturns in ad sales tied to comparisons with the year-earlier quarter, when a Super Bowl broadcast generated outsize revenue.

The New York owner of CBS, Comedy Central and the Paramount movie studio said net income in the first quarter came to $550 million, compared with a loss of $417 million in the year-earlier period.

How ‘The Pitt’ Became Such a Breakout Hit
Image
Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.

Writer/producer/showrunner John Wells is a busy man. He’s produced and/or created countless hit series over the decades, many at his home at Warner Bros. since 1986, collecting six Emmy wins along the way.

More are in the cards.

His latest, Max’s new dramatic series “The Pitt,” set in a overflowing Pittsburgh emergency room, has ranked among 2024’s most popular hits (over 10 million views per episode). Easy explanations for the appeal of “The Pitt” range from its immersive, music-free “you are here now” structure — each episode of the procedural unwinds one hour of a 15-hour ER stint — to its dead-on accurate portrayal of contemporary medicine.

But mainly it’s a zeitgeist thing: the right show at the right time.
