The horror-tinged dystopian thriller about a group of participants tricked into playing deadly versions of childhood games debuted back in 2021 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Originally planned as a limited series, the wild success of "Squid Game" led to its season 2 renewal, and it took some time to pull together a continuation of the story.

We won't know until we see more of season 2, but everything we do know indicates that the show will be even more ambitious in its second outing. Gyeongseong Creature is loosely based on the tragic lethal experiments conducted by the Japanese imperial army on the Chinese and Koreans. Unit 731, as it was called, was a unit of the Japanese imperial army that conducted human experiments to create bio-weapons in the 1930s and 1940s. This is when the TV show moves away from reality and creates a fantastical creature that can destroy entire cities. The main question the show poses is: Who were the real monsters? Of course, the most obvious answer is the members of the imperial army, who ruthlessly conducted these experiments with no remorse. In this fictional tale, a man named Tae-Sang is sent on a mission to find a woman for a police commissioner. Slowly, he starts to discover the truth about this hospital.

The Worst of Evil has left a large crater in our hearts after that finale. Not only is it an engaging show with some very talented actors, but it comes alive with a bibimbap of genres that makes it thrilling throughout. We can’t go without talking about the chemistry between our two leads, gangster Wi Ha-Joon and undercover cop Ji Chang-Wook. There’s no need to compare the two because they each bring their best work to the table in these roles that they wear so well. While we’ve seen Ji Chang-woo in action roles before, this is the first R-rated version, and it’s great to see him reach his full potential. On the other hand, this is the first time we’re seeing Wi Ha-Joon as a gangster, and we’ve got to say it suits him rather well. With that, let’s quickly get into...

Ji Chang-Wook and Wi Ha-Joon’s K-drama series has crossed the midpoint and is still going strong. The Worst of Evil, set in the 90s, is well-stylized and thrilling in all the right ways, not shying away from violence. This week’s episodes of The Worst of Evil have revealed some interesting things, and as always, there’s the question of Junmo’s morale: how far can he go as a cop, what will he do to keep his wife safe, and why is he doing all of this at the end of the day? At the same time, gangster Gi-Cheul thought he had an informant on his team, but maybe he should’ve checked up on his facts first before trusting new guy Seungho.

We’re only two episodes in, and already there are a lot of confusing turns in The Worst of Evil. As expected, the show is extremely violent and leaves nothing to the imagination. Of course, all the actors are commendable in their roles, and to see Wi Ha-Joon and Ji Chang-Wook team up together is a real delight. Additionally, this is like a comeback to action for Ji Chang-Wook, and a fitting one at that. InThe Worst of Evil episode 1, we find out about Gicheul and Junmo’s pasts, their backstories, and how they ended up getting to know each other. At the beginning of episode 1, we see them fight it out with what looks like another gang, but when Junmo’s wife, Euijeong, gets caught in the crossfire, it’s both him and Gicheul who react. How does Gicheul know Euijeong?

Chang-Wook, Wi Ha-Joon, and Lim Se-Mi starrer The Worst of Evil begins with a scene that looks like it came out of Park Chan-Wook’s Oldboy. Set in the 1990s, this show follows a police officer’s ambitious mission to infiltrate a drug operation in Gangnam, Seoul. The show is immediately violent and super brutal, thrilling viewers right from the start. Now, this operation is on a global scale, and Junmo, a mere detective in the police department, has to try and get to the bottom of this all alone. Ironically, Junmo isn’t new to drugs, and he really wants to clear up his reputation. Will this mission help him do that?

Over the past few years, I have become heavily immersed in K-content and K-dramas on a personal and professional level. Many hours have been spent watching the same perfectly executed tropes in various genres, from crime thrillers to romance K-dramas. Some dramas have won my heart and become favorites, like the teen romance True Beauty. But there is no denying that not all K-dramas were spectacular. K-dramas like Inspector Koo and a few others did not hold my interest and were unfinished.

When it comes to the thriller genre, South Korean cinema does not disappoint. Some might even say it dominates. And Kwon Oh-seung’s directorial debut, “Midnight” (2021), is no exception. Fleshed in spine-chilling tension, the film features Jin Ki-joo (Little Forest), Wi Ha-joon (Squid Game), and Gil Hae-yeon (In Her Place) cast in a heart-stopping game of cat-and-mouse. The film’s 2020 premiere was delayed given the Covid-19 pandemic before being made available in theatres and on online streaming platforms on 30 June 2021. Nevertheless, in spite of its subdued release, ‘Midnight’ proved a critical and commercial success, placing third at the Korean box office with a gross of 796,540 as of December 12, 2021. Additionally, it clinched the ‘Silver Audience Award for Best Asian Film’ at the ‘25th Fantasia International Film Festival’.

With a steady catalog of media new and old, there is quite literally always something to watch on Netflix. The streamer is constantly producing, curating, and promoting a unique plethora of films and shows for our viewing pleasure. Whatever your tastes, you're guaranteed to find something bingeworthy on the platform. Netflix has even become a host for quality non-English television, especially after the smash success of shows like "Squid Game" and "All of Us Are Dead." But until series achieve ludicrous virality, like the aptly-named "Extraordinary Attorney Woo," it's difficult to keep up with the many, many K-dramas that Netflix churn out.
Fortunately, that might not be the case for another recent drama, the female-led mystery thriller "Little Women." Despite a quiet release on Netflix in early September, the series is already gaining a generous amount of buzz. With its impressive cast and crew and tantalizing storyline, "Little Women" could...

With 111 million viewers “Squid Game", the South Korean survival drama series, focusing on a contest where players compete in children's games with deadly penalties for losing, returns for Season Two written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, starring Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-joon, Jung Ho-yeon, O Yeong-su, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo-ryoung, for streaming on Netflix:
"...'Seong Gi-hun', a divorced and indebted chauffeur, is invited to play a series of children's games for a chance at a large cash prize. Accepting the offer, he is taken to an unknown location and finds himself among 455 other players, all with similar large debts. The players are kept under watch at all times by masked guards in pink jumpsuits, with the games overseen by the 'Front Man'.
"The players soon discover that losing in these games results in their death, with each death adding millions to a potential billion dollar grand prize.

With so many streaming services to choose from, finding a new show or film to discover is rarely an issue. Especially not on Netflix, the streamer that essentially started it all, and continues to churn out quality originals to add to their already-stacked catalog. Each month on Netflix introduces titles both new and old, but not every title's got a permanent home on the platform. There's also the small issue of Netflix's promotion strategy: With so many movies and shows coming and going with each passing month, there's always the chance that something truly great is going to slip through the cracks. "Blonde" is finally getting its long-awaited (and scandalously-rated) release on the streamer, but the Ana de Armas starrer is far from the only exciting development on Netflix.
Whether you're on the hunt for a soapy thriller, a star-crossed romance, or some adult animation, there's plenty to go around this month.

Over the course of the last couple of years, we have seen many movies and read many novels, dealing with the subject of bullying, with Tetsuya Nakashima’s “Confessions” and Lee Su-jin’s “Han Gong-ju” being two of the perhaps most prominent examples. Given the focus on the social phenomenon, its victims and the repercussions for both sides, the ability to transform yourself into someone who can fight back, physically as well as emotionally, has become a pop-cultural trope. In their 2016 webtoon “Shark” writer Woon and illustrator Kim Woo-seob took this narrative as the foundation of a story about a character going through a transformation, searching for strength and eventually finding something completely different within himself.
“Shark: The Beginning” is screening at Florence Korea Film Festival

Hello, dear readers! With Indie Horror Month rolling on, we have a pair of reviews featuring two great recent indie genre releases that have come out in the last few days: Kwon Oh-Seung’s South Korean thriller Midnight and the vamp-tastic Let the Wrong One In from Conor McMahon (whose Stitches has been a movie that I’ve been singing its praises for nearly a decade now).

Kwon Oh-Seung’s impressive debut cleverly uses social sexism to ramp up disbelief in his female characters
This twisty-turny thriller from South Korea is an impressive, auspicious debut for writer-director Kwon Oh-Seung; taut as a piano-wire garotte, it’s compelling as a genre exercise. But it also offers a (possibly accidental) critique of a culture that often treats women and disabled people as inferior to able-bodied men. That latter point is extremely well illustrated late in Midnight when heroine Kyung Mi (Jin Ki-joo), a young deaf woman, keeps trying to get help from the cops or onlookers in a crowded street only to find people usually inclined to believe her pursuer, serial killer Do Shik because he’s such a good actor, skilled at implying she’s “hysterical” or “damaged”.

"You're dead if you touch it." Epic Pictures has revealed an official trailer a Korean serial killer thriller titled Midnight, marking the feature debut of a filmmaker named Oh-Seung Kwon. This played at the 2021 New York Asian Film Festival, Fantasia Film Festival, and Fantastic Fest last year, and also won Best Feature at Grimmfest in the UK. A deaf mother and daughter interrupt a serial psychopath as he attempts to claim his next victim, only to find his wrath redirected toward them instead. Now a witness to the killer's latest brutal crime, Kyung-mi is being ruthlessly hunted down. Will she survive or become his victim? Starring Wi Ha-Joon (best known as Detective Hwang from "Squid Game"), Jin Ki-Joo, Gil Hae-Yeon, Park Hoon, and Kim Hye-Yoon. Korea really loves movies about killers, there have been so many of them over the last few decades. This looks like a good spin on the usual,...

A man has reportedly been sentenced to death in North Korea for smuggling copies of Netflix’s blockbuster series “Squid Game” into the country. According to Radio Free Asia (via Variety), authorities were led to the man after they caught high school students watching the series. The report states that “Squid Game” was smuggled into the country from China through the use of a Usb flash drive. “Squid Game” is not available in China but remains popular thanks to piracy websites. The smuggler faces death by firing squad, while the students involved in bringing “Squid Game” in to school are facing prison sentences.
Radio Free Asia reports: “A student who bought a drive received a life sentence, while six others who watched the show have been sentenced to five years hard labor, and teachers and school administrators have been fired and face banishment to work in remote mines.”

‘Squid Game’ Triggers Feeding Frenzy As Hollywood Agencies Chase Creator & Stars Of Netflix Mega Hit
The phenomenal success of Netflix’s Squid Game came seemingly out of nowhere, catapulting its writer-director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, and cast to global stardom and making them the hottest commodity in Hollywood. That has created a stampede among the major agencies to sign Hwang and the actors, the vast majority of whom have no Hollywood representation.
That includes Hwang who recently met with the heads of the major talent agencies, CAA (soon-to-be-merged with ICM), WME and UTA, sources said. He is said to still be mulling who to sign with. The cast, led by Lee Jung-jae, Jung HoYeon and Park Hae-soo, also have been taking agency/management meetings this week, sources said.
Hwang and the actors are all in town; they flew in for the big press junket Netflix held for the show on Monday following its breakout success.

The series, which was released September 17, follows 456 desperate contestants who compete with each other in a mysterious and deadly survival game involving multiple rounds of childhood games to win 45.6 billion won in prize money that can pull them out of their misery. Squid Game is a winner for Netflix.
Building on its reportedly solid initial launch, the Korean series about 456 people who are lured into playing (incredibly) deadly versions of children’s games now stands as the streaming giant’s most sampled debut ever, having reached 111 million accounts less than a month after its release. (Netflix counts two minutes of any program as a “view.”)

It’s the next big thing on Netflix, and now the rest of the world is catching up to the phenomenon of Squid Game. That includes an appearance with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show on Wednesday night.
For the uninitiated, Squid Game debuted on Netflix on Sept. 17, and quickly grew to the streamer’s No. 1 show via word-of-mouth. Produced in South Korea and subtitled, the survival drama is set in Seoul, where people with enormous, unpayable debts are lured into a competition that promises riches to the victor – and death to the losers. Think Hunger Games for its closest cousin.
Fallon noted how the phenomenon has created a buzz. “Now all the major networks are trying to create the next Squid Game,” he said in his monologue. “Somewhere, there’s an NBC executive saying, ‘Let’s drain the pools on American Ninja Warrior.'”
