Even as superhero movies took Hollywood and the box office by storm in the 2010s, it has proven difficult for fans of those movies to get into the source material comics. If you're a Spider-Man fan eagerly waiting for "Beyond The Spider-Verse," though, pay attention to a new comic swinging its way to stores in January 2024. It will be the easiest jumping-on point for you in a long while.
That comic is "Ultimate Spider-Man," first announced via Marvel's Twitter account on September 20, 2023. It will be an ongoing series written by Jonathan Hickman and drawn by Marco Checchetto. The talent involved was already enough to pique comic fans' interest (and we'll explain why it should rouse yours' too soon). More details about "Ultimate Spider-Man were confirmed at New York Comic-Con this past weekend — at a panel attended by comics outlet Aipt, Hickman said the comic will be about a middle-aged Spider-Man,...

Much like the Goonies, superheroes never say die. Exciting comic book news comes from Entertainment Weekly this Friday, with word that Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani is co-writing a new Ms. Marvel comic as a part of the character’s embiggened reintroduction to Marvel Comics. Before we share the details, you should know that Marvel recently killed Ms. Marvel after the character sacrificed herself earlier this year in Amazing Spider-Man #26. Ms. Marvel’s death elicited mixed reactions from fans, but like most things in comics, there’s always a plan.
Vellani will co-write a new Ms. Marvel comic alongside Ms. Marvel TV writer Sabir Pirzada. Carlos Gomez and Adam Gorham supply the art, with Sara Pichelli creating covers for the series.
“This was way scarier than joining the MCU for me,” Vellani tells Entertainment Weekly. “Those projects feel like they live in their own dimension, so I guess I can separate myself easier.

"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" is shaping up to be one of the biggest movies of the year. The film, which hit theaters on June 2, grossed $120.5 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, putting it just behind "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which debuted with $146 million. Besides its animation, story, and representation, "Across the Spider-Verse" will be remembered for pushing the boundaries of the multiverse in Marvel films.
While "Spider-Man: No Way Home" brought three iconic live-action versions of the web-slinging superhero together, "Across the Spider-Verse" reportedly included over 250 versions of the beloved character - this time, both in animated and live-action form. Seeing so many Spider-People in one movie was definitely exciting, but perhaps the biggest crowd-cheering moment of all was when Donald Glover's version of the Prowler came on screen. Here's why.
What Is Donald Glover's Connection to the "Spider-Man" Franchise?
Glover actually has a long history with "Spider-Man.

Among the many pleasures of the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was its celebration of all things Spider-Man. The 2018 film filled the screen with webheads, letting audiences delight in all of the variations of people and creatures who can do anything a spider can. Into the Spider-Verse made fast fans of Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy aka Ghost Spider and Nicolas Cage‘s tough-talking Spider-Man Noir. Across the Spider-Verse continues this tradition with Oscar Isaac as conflicted antagonist Spider-Man 2099, but the real breakout is the movie’s loudest, rudest character: Spider-Punk.
Voiced by Daniel Kaluuya (in an accent closer to his native English), Spider-Punk is Hobie Brown, the Spider-Man of Earth-138. Draped in the trash aesthetic of 70s UK punk, Hobie battles against oppression with a commitment to anarchy and disruption. Spider-Verse directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers,...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
By the time "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" hit theaters in 2018, the world had seen an awful lot of the A-list Marvel superheroes on the big screen. Beginning with Sam Raimi's smash hit "Spider-Man" in 2002, Spidey became just about the most bankable movie star on the planet, if we consider the superheroes themselves the movie star (as some of the actors who play these roles have suggested). In any event, the "Spider-Man" movies, covering Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland, had made nearly $5 billion at the global box office up to that point — not even counting "Avengers: Infinity War," which arrived in 2018 and became a $2 billion global smash.

In the world of Spider-Man comics, Miles Morales is definitely one of the coolest variations of the web-slinging hero. The Afro-Latino teenager who was first introduced in 2011 by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli is a standout version of Spidey not just because he represents people who have rarely seen themselves in comics before, but also because he has some pretty sweet powers.
In addition to his basic Spidey sense and the web-shooting abilities that also allow Peter Parker to tie up villains and swing between buildings, Marvel comics Miles ended up equipped with a few extra talents after he was bitten by a different spider than the one that bit Peter. Namely, in a technique that some real-life arachnids use, Miles can camouflage himself and become near-invisible. As if all that's not enough, he also has a move called "venom blast,...

There isn't a superhero who's captured the hearts and aspirations of comic book readers more fervently than Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's Spider-Man. Ever since the character's introduction 61 years ago in the fifteenth issue of Marvel Comics' "Amazing Fantasy," the web-slinger has hooked 'em young with the universal origin story of Peter Parker, a nerdy teenager transformed by a radioactive arachnid (and the preventable murder of his Uncle Ben) into a quip-happy, crime-fighting dynamo. Every kid can relate to Parker's journey, and, as we grow older, our inner-child's fondness for the wall-crawler only deepens.
Though Spider-Man belongs to all of us, the character's massive popularity left open the possibility of an iteration that directly appealed to non-white fans. Finally, in 2011 (40 years after DC introduced the Black character John Stewart as a new member of the Green Lantern Corps), Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli thrust Miles Morales, a...

Even before the days of Marvel's Cinematic Universe or its equivalent in DC, the relationship between film, television, and comics was a pretty symbiotic one. Just as film and TV are now majorly informed by comics, comic artists have taken inspiration from film and TV — especially when it comes to the design for certain characters. "Batman: Year One" artist David Mazzucchelli famously modeled his Bruce Wayne on "Roman Holiday" star Gregory Peck. Another less-subtle reference to a famous face — and one of my personal favorites — came in 2016's "Invincible Iron Man": artist Mike Deodato Jr. modeled his Tony Stark off Santiago Cabrebra, of "The Musketeers" and "Star Trek: Picard" fame.
Sometimes, though, the inspiration is equal parts thematic as it is aesthetic. On occasion, an episode of television can even inspire a shift in a narrative arc, a fresh conflict, or even a brand new character. Such was the case for Brian Michael Bendis,...

Comics are an intimidating medium, which is ironic considering how many of us had formative reading experiences with comic books. But there’s a perception (that isn’t always unfounded) that if you aren’t constantly keeping up with comics, especially superhero comics, you’ll fall too far behind, get lost, and never get caught up. Or that you’ll be roped into buying a bunch of books that you’re not into just to “understand” the ones you’re following. Or that it’s all superheroes all the time.
Well, we say…to hell with that noise! Comics are no different than TV or movies in that there’s an infinite array of genres and tones to indulge yourself in, and even well-established long-running characters routinely set easy jumping on points for newer readers. It’s a new year, and there’s no better time to get into (or back into) reading comics.

Anyone can be Spider-Man. At least, that was the idea when Miles Morales first hit the scene in 2011 as the successor to the Ultimate universe’s Peter Parker. An Afro-Latino teenager taking up the mantle of Marvel’s most beloved and well-known hero, even if it was in an alternate universe, was a game-changer. The possibilities for the character, the topics that could be tackled, and the creators who could put their stamp on the character seemed endless. We’ve seen some of those possibilities reflected through the Oscar-winning animated film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and a stellar PlayStation game, Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Anyone can be Spider-Man. But the recent blowback from the comic issue What If…Miles Morales Became Thor? begs another question: can anyone write Spider-Man?
If you’re Black, the answer to that has been a rather telling “no.

This is not Zeb Wells’ first time in a comic book writers’ room. It’s not even his first time breaking Spider-Man stories as part of a team. The big difference with this one is that hopefully no children get eaten on his watch.
“I deserve that,” the new Amazing Spider-Man lead writer chuckles when we compare this new team project to “Shed,” the critically acclaimed, impossibly bleak story he wrote back when Peter Parker was in the middle of his “Brand New Day” era that saw the Lizard return and promptly eat his son.
There’s a lot different this time with the new status quo unrolling in “Beyond,” starting with Spidey himself. The premise of the new run of Amazing Spider-Man has Ben Reilly becoming Spider-Man after the copyright for the character is swiped from under Peter by the Beyond Corporation.
And then there’s the creative team surrounding Wells.

One of Star Wars’ most revered villains from its pre-Disney days of prequel-era stories is poised for a comeback. Durge, the fearsome bounty hunter best known from Genndy Tartakovsky’s 2003-2005 Star Wars: Clone Wars microseries, is set to make his Disney canon debut in the pages of Marvel’s Doctor Aphra #11. And with the upcoming arrival of Tartakovsky’s non-canon Clone Wars series on Disney+, it’s enough to make one speculate that bigger—live-action—plans might be in store for the character.
Durge was indeed immensely popular in the defunct Legends continuity of Star Wars in the early 2000s to the point that Matthew Stover’s 2005 novelization of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith makes direct reference to the character among other notable shout-outs to the events of Tartakovsky’s series. The reveal of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales arguably stole the show during a loaded PS5 digital event. Not only was the game’s debut trailer expertly crafted and stunningly beautiful, but given the success and quality of developer Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4, it was inevitable that Sony’s next trip into the Spider-Man universe would generate quite a bit of hype.
With Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales set up as a standalone game, we imagine many fans may be wondering what’s next for Miles Morales and how the Insomniac Games’ version of the character differs from other takes on the iconic hero that we’ve seen in other mediums.

J.J. Abrams' Spider-man Comic Book Series Gets a Trailer with a First Look at the Villain Cadaverous
A couple months ago it was announced that J.J. Abrams was going to write a Spider-Man comic book for Marvel with his son Henry. Now today we have a trailer to share with you that offers us a first look at what’s in store.
The comic will be a five-part series, and it will introduce a new villain to the Marvel universe named Cadaverous, who “will cause problems for Spider-Man, his alter-ego, Peter Parker, and his beloved Mary Jane Watson.”
The story is still being kept under wraps, but Abrams did promise that the series will show Peter Parker “in a way you haven’t seen him before.” The trailer features Abrams and his son talking about the development of the comic and features some of the art, which was created by Sara Pichelli. Looks like J.J. Abrams is mixing things up and trying something new. He is set to co-write a new Spider-Man comic book for Marvel with his son Henry. They are teaming up with Ultimate Spider-Man artist and Miles Morales co-creator Sara Pichelli on this project. Dave Stewart will do the colors with covers from Olivier Coipel.
The comic will be a five-part series, and the story will introduce a new villain to the Marvel universe named Cadaverous, who “will cause problems for Spider-Man, his alter-ego, Peter Parker, and his beloved Mary Jane Watson.”
There are no details on what the story will tell, but Abrams promises that the series will show Peter Parker “in a way you haven’t seen him before.” Abrams also said that this has been in the works for awhile:
“Nick [Lowe, Marvel Comics editor] had been pressing me to do a book with him. A year or so ago,...

If you’re a Spider-Man fan, then there’s a very good chance you’ve been taken on an emotional rollercoaster ride in the past few days. Long story short, Marvel posted the number “4” formed out of webs on their Twitter page over the weekend, thereby forcing True Believers to think that a comic book based on Sam Raimi’s canned Spider-Man 4 movie was in the works. Well, either that or a possible Future Foundation reunion.
To the chagrin of many, it wasn’t long before those hopes were dashed when a “3,” a “2” and a “1” followed on subsequent days, thus revealing we were enduring a countdown of some sort. Though the speculation was fun while it lasted, someone needs to tell the House of Ideas that nobody starts a countdown at “4.”
As it turns out, the big announcement is that famed movie producer/writer/director J.J. Abrams is actually...

Based on characters created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli, the new Sony Pictures Animation movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, offers an entirely different take on Marvel's beloved web-slinging superhero, which was first introduced by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1962. Produced by the filmmaking team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the story centers on African-American/Puerto Rican teenager Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore of Dope and Netflix's "The Get Down") as he tries to fit in at the prestigious Brooklyn Visions Academy. Miles' father, Jefferson (Brian Tyree Henry of Widows and If Beale Street Could Talk), is a straight-laced police officer and his mother (Luna Lauren Velez) is a hard-working nurse — both loving parents who are proud of their son's achievements, and really want to see him succeed studying at the school for gifted students. Adjusting to a new school proves to...

With Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, their latest animated outing, producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller took a big swing, experimenting with bold formal choices to meet great power with great responsibility. The big screen debut of Miles Morales—an Afro-Latino teenager who dons the spidey suit, within a Marvel multiverse—Spider-Man would feature an unprecedented visual presentation befitting a truly groundbreaking character. Created in 2011 by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli—and soon amassing a major fan following—Morales comes into his own in the fast-paced origin story, swinging through poignant family moments, rampant meta comedy, and various dimensions, coming face to face with a number of Spider-Men and Women, while combatting a dire threat to humanity.
An endlessly innovative duo, Lord and Miller have always sought to raise the creative bar, demonstrating that there are few limitations to what is possible, when imagination is in no short supply.

“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (December 14) is the wild card in the animated Oscar race. It not only introduces Miles Morales as the alternative Spidey, the Afro-Puerto Rican teen from Brooklyn, but also boldly breaks the rules of animation as a moving comic book splattered with graffiti. Yet, given what Phil Lord and Chris Miller already accomplished with “The Lego Movie,” this was the logical next step.
“Miles is one of the most popular characters, if not the most popular character, to be introduced in the last 10 years or so,” said Lord, who shares script credit with Rodney Rothman (“22 Jump Street”). “The thing that [‘Miles Morales’ co-creator] Brian Bendis did was to help us imagine that it could be a completely different kind of person under that mask. And yet a person that embodied the heart of what Steve Ditko and Stan Lee started with: an unexpected hero who feels too young and too unqualified,...

One thing that’s ticked off True Believers in recent years was that of the Fantastic Four being given the short end of the stick by the House of Ideas. Having been dubbed their “First Family” for good reason, pretty much the entire Marvel Universe owes their existence to that quartet of heroes.
Of course, much of this had to do with the Fantastic Four’s cinematic rights residing over at Fox, thus forcing Marvel to cut off its own nose to spite its face. In fact, even the X-Men were on the outs for a time, but some justification can be made for cancelling Fantastic Four books because they weren’t selling as well – and there was also word on the street that the publisher wanted to distance itself from the 2015 box office flop.
But now that everyone’s had almost three years to rid that taste from their mouth,...

“He’s half Puerto Rican and half African American, he’s the product of a happy and alive family,” Lord and Miller told to the crowd at the Forum Theater at Caesar’s Palace about Morales, making references to Peter Parker’s unfortunate family situation.
“It’s really true that anyone can wear the mask,” said Shameik Moore, who voices Miles.
Created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, Miles Morales was introduced to the comic book world in 2011 as part of the Ultimate Marvel universe, a timeline separate from the main Marvel world. In that series, the Ultimate incarnation of Peter Parker was killed off, with Miles stepping in as the new New York webslinger. After the Ultimate Universe ended in 2015, Miles joined the main Marvel universe as the new protector of the Big Apple, as the main timeline’s Peter Parker took on villains around the world.
“Venom” is the first in a series of planned “Spider-Man” spinoffs that Sony plans to release in coming years, including the animated Miles Morales film “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse,” due out December 14, and the Silver Sable/Black Cat spinoff “Silver & Black,” which has Gina Prince-Bythewood attached as director and is slated to be released next year.
However, those Spidey-spinoffs are unlikely to be connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Last summer during the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” press tour, Amy Pascal told journalists that “Venom” will take place “in the same world

Writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller introduced very rough footage showing a super-charming Morales at CinemaCon. Morales dons the Spider-Man mask in a comic world where several people are empowered to do the same.

Last month we learned that Marvel Comics would be bringing back The Fantastic Four comic after it was canceled in 2015. I'm happy that they decided to bring Marvel's first family back together again. It will bring Reed and Sue back to Earth, reuniting the team for the first time since Secret Wars.
The comic will be written by Dan Slott, with art by Sara Pichelli, and Marvel has released a new piece of cover art that you see above, which comes from Esad Ribic. We also have a teaser trailer for you to watch that highlights some of the Fantastic Four's greatest moments over the year. Here's the description that came with video:
Celebrate the Fantastic Four with a view into their past and a look towards the future, from their debut in Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s classic 1961 issue to their much-anticipated return in August’s upcoming new series from Dan Slott,...
