Stars: Himesh Patel, Lily James, Sophia Di Martino, Ellise Chappell, Meera Syal, Harry Michell, Vincent Franklin, Joel Fry | Written by Richard Curtis | Directed by Danny Boyle
Yesterday is the latest film from the visionary mind of director Danny Boyle and acclaimed writer Richard Curtis. It stars Himesh Patel as struggling musician Jack Malik who, on the premature eve of his own self retirement from the singer/songwriter craft to the disappointment of his manager (Lily James), is involved in an accident that knocks him out cold and by coincidence all the memory of The Beatles throughout history for everyone aside from Jack. What commences is a meteoric rise of Malik who in the wake of no John, Paul, Ringo and George, takes the mantel himself and travels on a far greater and prosperous journey than he ever could expect.
By no means is it the best work from Boyle, who...

Poldark creator Debbie Horsfield has lifted the lid on the final season of the British period drama, which will air in 2019.
Horsfield has opened up about her approach to the fifth and final season of the Mammoth Screen-produced drama after BBC and PBS confirmed its end. This comes ahead of the launch of the fourth season, which launches on PBS Masterpiece on Sunday September 30 at 9pm.
Poldark is based on twelve novels by Winston Graham; season four is based on the seventh novel, The Angry Tide. However, the author left a gap of ten years before the eighth novel, The Stranger from the Sea.
Horsfield, who has written every episode of the four series, said, “In The Stranger from the Sea, Winston Graham made many references to developments that happened in the gap years. Much can also be inferred. There are, of course, also historical events and people of the time,...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the Season 3 premiere of “Poldark.”]
For Season 3, “Poldark” had to pull itself out of the mire of bitterness and betrayal that plagued the end of last season, when the series’ hero tarnished his sterling character with infidelity. The central romance suffered as a result, and still stings in the hearts of both his faithful spouse and viewers.
And for the most part, it does appear that Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) is keeping his word to his wife Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) this season, although a shadow cools their once sizzling-hot romance. The season begins several months since last season, enough time for his old flame and one-night affair Elizabeth (Heida Reed) to be ready to pop out a baby any second. And while the passage of time has allowed Ross and Demelza to reconnect, it has only allowed toxicity to bloom in Elizabeth. Not only is she still angry at Ross for bedding and then jilting her,...

Drake and Morwenna face tragedy in the latest Poldark series 3 episode…
This review contains spoilers.
See related Oculus review
Of the many things Poldark has to recommend it—the escapist beauty of its cast, landscape and baked goods—accessibility is near the top of the list. You could be watching from inside a wheelie bin with the lid down and you’d still be able to grasp what was going on (though admittedly, you’d miss the beauty of the baked goods).
It’s all down to the translucency of motivation. Usefully, everyone in Poldark lists their character goals each morning before brushing their teeth. “I must feed the poor” says Ross, “I must hang the poor” says George, “I’ve got the major hots for one of the poor” says Morwenna. “I’m keen on toads” says Drake.
There’s no murky ambiguity or doubt as...
