Vashon Film Institute has set the date for the third annual Vashon Island Film Festival, which is slated to take place Aug. 8-11. The announcement comes with the launch of two new divisions of the Vashon Film Institute and a new donation arm, which accepts restricted funds to be used solely to fund improvements at the Vashon Theatre.
Vfi’s new divisions are the Quartermaster Lab, a collective of filmmaking programs, and VFIpresents, its sales, distribution and release division, which will also focus on organizing community events outside Viff.
“The quintessential goal in founding Vfi was to support independent filmmaking in the Pacific Northwest,” said Mark Mathias Sayre, founder of Vashon Film Institute. “To that end, Viff has already brought compelling indie features and documentaries to local audiences and will continue to do so. But that’s only part of the game plan: We’re equally committed to engendering the...

Somewhere, as "Euphoria" struggles to reassemble its cast of former no-names-turned-movie-stars for season 3, the team behind "Bones" is wistfully inquiring, "First time?" Hart Hanson's nearly-unstoppable procedural dramedy not only transformed Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz into household names over its 12 seasons, but it also took many of its supporting players to the next level. The only downside was, this meant it was sometimes necessary for the show's creatives to kill off a fan-favorite member of the Jeffersonian's staff once the actors behind them had filled up their workload with outside projects.
Most infamously, "Bones" took Booth's honorary little brother Lance Sweets out back behind the shed after John Francis Daley's directing career made it impossible for him to continue playing the cherished FBI psychologist on a regular basis. It wasn't fun for anyone (least of all Daley), although he was far from the only cast member whose character got Old Yeller-ed.

The day’s conversations spanned topics of politics, race, education, climate change, health and labor, with intentions to provide information that will influence future onscreen storylines and help maintain narrative authenticity.

Almost eleven months have gone by since we heard that Julie Bowen – who played the character Claire Dunphy on 250 episodes of the ABC sitcom Modern Family – had signed on to star in the coming-of-age Satanic Panic thriller series Hysteria!, which is set up at the Peacock streaming service. Emjay Anthony (Physical), Chiara Aurelia (Cruel Summer), Kezii Curtis (Charm City Kings), Nikki Hahn (Magnum P.I.), and Anna Camp of the Pitch Perfect films joined the show soon after Bowen. Then genre icon Bruce Campbell signed on to play small town police chief Dandridge. Things have been quiet for a while, but now Deadline has revealed the names of several more Hysteria! cast members. They are Garret Dillahunt (The Last House on the Left remake), Nolan North (Pretty Little Liars), Elijah Richardson (Fantasy Football), Milly Shapiro (Hereditary), Allison Scagliotti (Warehouse 13), and Jessica Treska (Alex & Me). All of the newly announced cast...

If there is one death that hit "Bones" fans hard, it was the death of Lance Sweets. Played by John Francis Daley, the character was killed off rather brutally in the show's season 10 premiere. That left everyone else to pick up the pieces, namely his on-again, off-again, girlfriend Daisy, who happened to be pregnant with his unborn child. Carla Gallo, the actress behind Daisy, had some thoughts on what she would have liked for the characters. In the end, it didn't go her way.
Back in 2014, Gallo spoke with Give Me My Remote about Daisy's relationship with Sweets, particularly in light of the show killing off the character. For Gallo, it seemed to be bittersweet as Daisy was the last woman Sweets loved, but they didn't get to be together in the end. That is what she truly wanted, even if the powers that be weren't planning on going that direction.

Everyone has a TV character death that struck a raw nerve -- like Tara suddenly getting killed on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Or Cordelia abruptly dying on "Angel." Or Wash's shocking demise in the "Firefly" movie "Serenity." Being sadistic to his fans was kind of Joss Whedon's thing long before his fall from grace, is what I'm getting at.
Lance Sweets (John Francis Daley) being murdered on the orders of the corrupt Dr. Glen Durant (Jd Cullum) in the "Bones" season 10 premiere, "The Conspiracy in the Corpse," was another gut-punch of a TV death. Unless you knew what was going on behind the scenes, it must have come as a rather unexpected blow. It wasn't like he got offed in the lead-up to a season finale or at a point where his story appeared to be drawing to a close organically. Quite the opposite; things were going swimmingly for the boyish FBI psychologist,...

"Bones" fans were delivered a crushing blow when FBI Psychologist Lance Sweets was killed off. Not only did John Francis Daley's fan-favorite character die, but he was beaten to death by a Navy Seal in a parking garage. It was a brutal send-off for a character who was a staple of the show for seven seasons. In many cases, an actor leaving a show after so much time would be met with a great deal of shared emotion from the cast and crew. That's not exactly how it went down for Daley on his last day.
In a 2014 interview with TVLine, Daley discussed his character's departure from the long-running Fox TV show. The actor explained how his final day of filming went down and, unfortunately, it wound up being a very lonely experience for him. Much like the character's send-off, the actor's last day was pretty brutal. Here's what...

John Francis Daley and his writing/directing partner Jonathan Goldstein are not exactly what you might call household names just yet, although they've assuredly achieved "Oh neato, it's those two!" status. With writing credits on "Horrible Bosses" and "Spider-Man: Homecoming," plus their efforts as directors on "Game Night" and "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," Daley and Goldstein have cemented themselves as aficionados at merging cheeky humor with well-crafted action and wholehearted drama -- so much so that it's easy to forget Daley had a full-blooded acting career before he turned to filmmaking.
Fans of Paul Feig's "Freaks and Geeks" will recall that Daley played series lead Sam Weir on the cult classic teen dramedy series, kicking off his run as a television actor in the process. He would go on to have recurring roles on "The Geena Davis Show" and "Kitchen Confidential" before signing up to play Lance Sweets,...

If you thought George R.R. Martin had a monopoly on shocking character deaths, guess again.
In reality, killing off your faves is a tried-and-true tradition in TV. At worst, it's the result of a cynical ratings grab or behind-the-scene turmoil. But even when that's not the case, it can still be a controversial practice. Death is a part of everyday life and deserves to be treated as such, yet certain shows are better equipped to handle the topic than others. For example, medical dramedies like "M*A*S*H" and "Scrubs" were particularly well-suited to the task, seeing as their characters had to deal with people dying on their watch weekly. Likewise, the heroes in Fox's long-running crime procedural "Bones" spent their days, in a figurative sense, speaking to and trying to better understand the dead.
Still, as difficult as it can be for those watching at home to say...

When you're a long-running network TV series with 20-plus hours of material to deliver every season, you're inevitably going to take some wild swings to meet your quota. "Bones" was as formulaic as any other television procedural, but it had a good deal more personality and would find ways to spice things up now and then. Sometimes that meant a break in format, like when it showed an entire episode from the perspective of a victim's skull. Other times, that meant inviting further "X-Files" comparisons by forcing its investigating heroes to uncover the truth behind what appears to be an extraordinary crime.
In season 6, episode 19, "The Truth in the Myth," the power couple of forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) are tasked with looking into the death of Lee Coleman (Leigh McCloskey), a myth-buster -- not that kind -- who hosted...

John Francis Daley is one of the most exciting comedic voices working today. Together, he and his writing/directing partner Jonathan Goldstein have given us such fantastic movies as "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," and "Game Night," as well as the screenplay for "Spider-Man: Homecoming." Their scripts strike the right balance between fantastical and relatability, and the duo has an eye for turning even the smallest moment into a visual spectacle.
But before that, and even shortly before they made their feature writing debut with "Horrible Bosses," the two collaborated on the script of an episode of the hit Fox series "Bones." Daley was no stranger to "Bones," as he played the recurring role of psychologist Lance Sweets starting in season 3.
For season 6, Daley got the chance to write an episode about the corpse of a myth-busting TV show host found in West Virginia, amidst rumors of a chupacabra attack.

Shane Black’s latest thriller, Play Dirty, is getting a new producer.
Amazon, which is backing the feature, is in negotiations to tap Jules Daly to replace Joel Silver after the streaming giant parted ways with the veteran moviemaker over claims of verbal abuse.
Silver was steering Play Dirty, a feature seen as a comeback vehicle for both him and longtime collaborator Black, who is writing and directing for Amazon. Simultaneously, he also was producing the Doug Liman-directed remake of Road House, this one starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Road House had completed shooting and is deep in post-production, with expectations of hitting sometime next year. Play Dirty is expected to begin shooting next year.

A UK assault trial for Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black was dismissed by a judge Wednesday after the trial got underway.
The judge, Louisa Ciecióra of Westminster Magistrates’ Court, ruled that there was inconsistent and insufficient evidence that BBC3 presenter Teddy Edwardes was the victim of an assault in an altercation with Black at a Soho nightclub in August 2022.
The ruling, reported by the Daily Mail, meant that Black and his husband, Olympic diver Tom Daley, did not have to take the stand.
According to London’s Metropolitan Police, officers were called to the Freedom nightclub in London’s Soho district after midnight in August last year following reports of “an altercation” at the bar between a man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s. Black had reportedly grabbed Edwardes’ wrist and spilled her drink, after which she allegedly hit him in the head as Daley looked on.

Warning: this article contains major Spoilers for all five series of Ghosts
So the fifth and final series of critically acclaimed BBC sitcom Ghosts is out, and it’s the end of an era, but thankfully the show has bowed out with a flurry of important questions being answered.
This comedy, created by and starring many of the team behind Horrible Histories, has earned itself a dedicated and enthusiastic fandom (as well as an American remake on CBS) thanks largely to its heartwarming ensemble performance.
The majority of the characters are ghosts from various eras, but at first it wasn’t clear how any of them had died. One of the show’s many charms is that over the five series it gradually drip-fed us the hilarious and often lowkey heartbreaking back-stories of these lovable ghosts one by one, but we went into series five with the fate of two...

The Handmaid’s Tale traveled outside the confines of Gilead for much of season five, expanding the story of June Osborne, played by Elisabeth Moss, after her escape from the totalitarian society at the center of the Hulu series. The first two episodes, in fact, picked up in Canada in the 24 hours after the show’s most violent act yet, when June led her fellow handmaid’s in the brutal murder of her former abuser, Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes).
And those episodes, both directed by Moss, kicked off the tone of the entire penultimate season, explain cinematographer Nicola Daley, costume designer Leslie Kavanagh and composer Adam Taylor in a THR Presents panel, powered by Vision Media. Particularly when the double-episode premiere ended with June’s abducted daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake) being used as a pawn by June’s Gilead nemesis Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) during the worldwide broadcast of Fred’s funeral.

Actors Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh are teaming up to star in ‘Mayday’, an action adventure film helmed by ‘Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.
The script was penned by the duo and was completed before the WGA strike that is currently going on in the US, reported the entertainment news magazine Deadline.
While the details for the feature have been almost entirely under wraps, the idea had apparently been germinating prior to Apple’s involvement.
Once Reynolds showed interest in joining the project this April, the development of the project started picking pace.
While the start date is still not determined, it seems very likely that this could be the next thing Reynolds shoots.

Mayday will be produced by Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger. Reynolds, Ashley Fox, Johnny Pariseau and Patrick Gooing will produce for Maximum Effort. Carin Sage will oversee for Skydance.
The project is part of Skydance’s first-look deal with Apple, which has already resulted in the Chris Evans-Ana de Armas action-comedy Ghosted, and the upcoming Mark Wahlberg...

Production on the Peacock series Hysteria! starring Julie Bowen and Anna Camp has shut down production in Atlanta for the remainder of the WGA writers strike.
Deadline understands the WGA picket line was respected by Teamsters and IATSE early Monday morning, the 35th day of the strike.
While production shutdowns have become a regular occurrence in New York and Los Angeles as a result of picketing by striking writers, this is believed to be the first series to suspend filming in Atlanta. WGA East and West members are organizing in key cities outside of New York City and Los Angeles to help set up pickets with local members where productions have expanded in recent years, including Atlanta and Albuquerque.
Created by Matthew Scott Kane who writes and executive produces and co-showruns alongside David A. Goodman, former WGA President who is a co-chair of the negotiating committee. Hysteria! explores America’s...

With just the CW left tomorrow, the near-talent-free upfronts are winding down, and shows are still being shuttered in New York City, while on the picket lines in LA there was Mariachism, tacos, tunes and some Mandalorians to galvanize the troops.
On the 16th day of the Writers Guild strike, picket signs were up near Madison Square Garden this morning as Warner Bros Discovery kicked off its muted pitch to advertisers a week before the company’ streamer officially becomes Max. As HBO chief Casey Bloys offered support on-stage at the Msg Theatre for a “fair resolution” for the WGA, outside picketers were moved almost out of view of entering attendees due to nearly construction.
Slated to be between 32nd and 31st streets on 8th avenue, the picket line this morning was moved to 31st and 7th in front of building Penn 11.

Paramount Picture and eOne’s “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” will be available to stream on Paramount+ on Tuesday, May 16. This comes 47 days after its March 31 domestic theatrical debut, continuing Paramount’s mostly-firm 45-day window — most movies arrive on home video on a Tuesday — between theatrical and streaming which began in July 2021 with “A Quiet Place Part II.” The film has been available to rent on PVOD for $20 or buy digitally for $25 since May 2, with a DVD, Blu-ray and 4K release arriving May 30.
The film received solid reviews and excellent word of mouth, but the $150 million franchise starter barely topped $205 million worldwide in theatrical earnings. The Dungeons and Dragons brand was a prime example of “IP for the sake of IP.” None of its admittedly impressive cast qualified as a butts-in-seats draw. Moreover, the film was initially slated for March 10 before being moved to March 31.

2018’s dark comedy, Game Night, made a splash upon its release when audiences found the movie to be a cleverly written mystery on top of the laughs, with the look of a David Fincher film. If you ever clamored for a sequel to the R-rated comedy, you are in good company. Rachel McAdams recently spoke with Empire about how her own mom was so impressed with the movie, she wants her to do a sequel.
While doing promotion for her new film, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, McAdams revealed that her mom was one of Game Night‘s biggest fans. “You know, right after my mom saw that movie, she was like, ‘You have to do a sequel!’ ” she explains. McAdams would then express her enthusiasm to return to the world of the film. “I would totally be down for that. I love [Daley and Goldstein] , and I love a game night,...

If you’ve seen Game Night, chances are, by the closing credits, you were ready for more. Directors John Francis Daley pulled off something special with their unexpected 2018 comedy – crafting a smartly-scripted, mystery-driven laugh-fest with excellent performances, and the sleek visual style of a David Fincher movie to boot. All that, and it was a critical and box office hit – prime material for an expansion pack. Or, as they call it in Hollywood, a sequel.
If you were keenly looking out for any possibility of a Game Night 2, you’re not alone. “You know, right after my mom saw that movie, she was like, ‘You have to do a sequel!’,” star Rachel McAdams tells Empire. And if it happens, she’s ready to play. “I would totally be down for that. I love [Daley and Goldstein] and I love a game night so it’s the perfect package for me.

There's nothing quite like gathering with your friends for a rowdy session of "Dungeons & Dragons" or any fantasy tabletop role-playing game. But if that's not an option, playing together virtually from home will do in a pinch.
Despite having dominated the tabletop RPG market ever since its arrival in 1974, "Dungeons & Dragons" hasn't had the easiest time translating its appeal to the screen. Courtney Solomon's 2000 "D&d" movie is more of a cringe-fest than an amiable cheese-fest, save for a never-hammier Jeremy Irons somehow doing both the most and the least as the film's villain. (That it somehow got two straight-to-video sequels is an achievement even the savviest D&d player would struggle to pull off.) More than two decades later, Paramount finally gave the property another go with "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," hiring John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein — the duo behind 2018's glorious action...

Dungeons & Dragons series: Drew Crevello joins the party as showrunner of the live-action adaptation
The Dungeons & Dragons series is gaining another party member in Drew Crevello (WeCrashed) as the showrunner of the live-action adaptation for Paramount+. Crevello will work closely with Rawson Marshall Thurber, who wrote the pilot script and will direct the first episode. The eight-episode series is a co-production between eOne and Paramount Pictures, with eOne leading the charge.
According to Deadline’s previous report, “Adapting Dungeons & Dragons for television has been a major focus for eOne under President of Global Television Michael Lombardo following the company’s 2019 acquisition by Hasbro. The live-action series has been tipped to be the studio’s largest-scope TV project ever, potentially launching a Dungeons & Dragons universe spanning multiple scripted and unscripted shows.”
Deadline would also like to remind us that Dungeons & Dragons is “a fantasy role-playing game franchise. Featuring humans, elves, orcs, and other fantastical creatures engaging in wars, treasure hunts, and campaigns,...

This post contains spoilers for "Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves."
Somewhat amazingly, "Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" currently ranks as one of the best-reviewed movies of 2023. For what could have been a cheap franchise play, directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley actually managed to deliver the goods, thanks in no small part to an A-list cast led by the likes of Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez. But there was another A-lister who came as a big (technically little) surprise to audiences: Bradley Cooper.
"The Hangover" and "A Star Is Born" actor shows up a bit late in the film as the surprising husband to Rodriguez's character Holga. Whereas she is a hulking warrior, Cooper's character is a tiny, tiny man, making for a hilarious, crowd-pleasing scene in the film. In a recent interview with Variety, the filmmakers explained how the cameo came to be. Daley worked...

Congratulations are in order for Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black! The couple have grown their family, and have welcomed their second child into the world. The 28-year-old Olympic diver and his 48-year-old director husband - who are already parents to 4-year-old Robert Ray Black-Daley - shared the surprising news on April 5 via an announcement in The Times.
While the couple hadn't publicly revealed they were expecting a second child, the news of their son's birth was shared with the outlet, reading: "Births: Black-Daley on March 28 to Thomas Robert Daley and Dustin Lance Black, a son, Phoenix Rose." Reps for Daley later confirmed the news to Popsugar.
The couple previously welcomed Robert Ray via surrogacy on June 27,2018 after announcing they were growing their brood in February of that year. Their first child is named after Daley's late father, who tragically died of a brain tumor in May 2011. Their first baby...

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves should not work nearly as well as it does. It’s an adaptation of a game whose heyday was forty years ago, in a genre that spits out three flops for every success – lest we forget, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings was preceded by a Dungeons and Dragons adaptation that even hardcore fans of the game are loathe to revisit.
And yet, this new D&d adventure is a hoot, an imaginative and fun yarn that will please longtime Dungeon Masters while keeping the unfamiliar engaged. It has enough wit and charm to be mentioned in the same sentence as The Princess Bride, even if it can’t quite capture the epic highs of Rob Reiner’s classic.
The film opens with thieves Edgin (Chris Pine) and Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) in an icy prison, appealing for pardon. There’s just enough time...

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves opened to an honorable enough $38.5 million at the domestic box office, enough to take out John Wick: Chapter 4 and top the chart.
The big-budget movie — based on Hasbro’s fantasy tabletop game — came in ahead of expectations but will still need strong legs throughout April and into May in order to launch a new movie franchise for Paramount and eOne after costing $150 million to produce before marketing.
Dungeons & Dragons certainly has that chance: it earned stellar reviews and an A- CinemaScore from audiences. Upcoming spring breaks and the Easter holiday will be another advantage. But adapting games has always been tricky business. Last year, Sony’s Uncharted debuted to $44 million domestically on its way to ultimately being considered a success.

[Editor’s note: The following story contains spoilers for “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”]
A good “Dungeons & Dragons” session always features some memorable NPCs (that’s a “non-playable character” for you newbies) and supporting characters for the central party to encounter. In the new film “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” our heroes come across plenty of allies and enemies, but none make quite as immediate an impression as Marlomen, the ex-lover of barbarian Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) who is played in an unexpected one-scene cameo by Mr. Jackson Maine himself: Bradley Cooper.
The scene is a delightful surprise for many reasons, starting with the fact that Marlomen is a diminutive halfling, only reaching the ripped Holga’s belly button. Then there’s a fact that he’s pretty clearly patterned off of the Hobbits from “Lord of the Rings,” living in a cottage that brings The Shire immediately to mind.
But, while there’s definitely a kick from...

This weekend “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” opens nationwide. And with it, countless viewers who have never played the tabletop role-playing game, first published back in 1974, will be introduced to a fantastical world full of magical creatures, dangerous dungeons and daring wizards.
Chris Pine stars as a bard and former spy who gets together with some other thieves to exact some delicious revenge on a former partner (Hugh Grant). The movie debuted at Austin’s South by Southwest Film Festival to a rapturous response and the reviews from critics since have been just as strong.
But the question remains: can someone who has never rolled a five-sided dice get as big a kick out of “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” as a level-five mage? Read on to find out:

A month mostly filled with successful sequels and franchise installments comes to an end with an unexpectedly promising original. Not wholly original, as “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” is based on the 1974 table-top role-playing game which counts as its own genre. However, the picture is closest in spirit to “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.”
It is an IP sell with plenty of Easter Eggs and in-jokes for fans of the brand. However, it’s first and foremost a rousing, crowd-pleasing action comedy filled with a game cast including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant that plays for those who play the game or those who have merely heard of it via pop culture osmosis.

In the latest episode of Crew Call, we talk to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves directors, scribes and EPs John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein about the vision they sold to Paramount to make the dark and dingy world of the role playing game, not just fun, but funnier. And even more so, a broad film that appealed to the die-hards and non-die hards alike. That take seems to be working after a rapturous SXSW world premiere and critical and audience scores well over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses an unannounced cameo in the film “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” which is currently playing in theaters.
For “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” writer-directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley pulled from the expansive trove of creatures and lore created over the 50-year history of the Dungeons & Dragons role playing game. There are paladins and sorcerers, red wizards and owlbears, bards and barbarians — all of them written by Goldstein and Daley and performed by Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Daisy Head with the same good-natured pluck that has imbued the countless campaigns waged by the game’s players.
Throughout the film, the roguish bard, Edgin (Pine), talks with the gruff warrior, Holga (Rodriguez), about Holga’s ex, Mariamin, for whom she’s still harboring feelings. At one point in the characters’ journey, Holga decides...

The following post contains spoilers about “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves”
Before he hunkers down to prep for the “Maestro” awards campaign, Bradley Cooper has one small thing to get out of the way: a surprise cameo in “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” as a little person.
Roughly halfway through the new fantasy comedy, Cooper appears as a character named Marlamin, the former romantic partner of the heroic Holga (Michelle Rodriguez). The twist is that while Holga is the size of Rodriguez, Marlamin is about the height of an average Hobbit.

“I co-starred with Bradley on the show ‘Kitchen Confidential’ when I was 19 years old, and we appreciated each other’s careers from afar after that experience,” Daley, a former actor who is most famous for playing a lead role on “Freaks and Geeks,...

Plot: A thief and his team find themselves on an epic quest, one putting him in search of his daughter. Monsters, mayhem, and more ensue – with a healthy dose of humor.
Review: In this year of sequels, we have something a little different but very familiar to many. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, directed by John Francis Daley (who you may remember from Freaks & Geeks) and Jonathan Goldstein, is another big-screen adaptation of the popular interactive game. The last time a D&d movie played in the cinema was the less-than-stellar 2000 feature starring Justin Whalin and Jeremy Irons, which made little of an impression. It certainly didn’t meet the expectations of critics or audiences. At all. The upcoming film stars Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez as Edgin and Holga, hapless thieves on a desperate journey. Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Rege-Jean Page, and Hugh Grant join the two...

In the final episode of the seminal high school TV comedy-drama Freaks And Geeks, titled ‘Discos and Dragons’, teenage nerd Sam Weir (played by John Francis Daley) is fed up. “I'm sick of being called a geek,” he complains to his friends. “I mean, what's so geeky about us, anyways? We're just guys.” Then, with perfect comic timing, his equally nerdy friend Harris (Stephen Lea Sheppard) approaches him in the school corridor and announces: “Gentlemen. Good news! New Dungeons & Dragons handbook. ‘Deities And Demigods’. We’re gonna have a fun Friday night!”
Criminally cancelled in 2000 after just one season, Freaks And Geeks was at the time perhaps the most accurate on-screen depiction of the fantasy tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. For a long time, D&d — with its high fantasy tropes, its fair maidens, its complex magic, its many-sided dice and its opaque, labyrinthine rules — seemed solely the domain of geeks.

[This story contains spoilers for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.]
If 2023 is any indication, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves filmmakers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley have leveled up.
The writing-and-directing duo’s fantasy adventure film, which is based on the beloved tabletop role-playing game, has been met with rave reviews from critics and audiences, and most impressively, they’ve managed to pull off the impossible by satisfying both D&d die-hards and newcomers to the world. Furthermore, Goldstein and Daley even have a story credit on one of the buzziest superhero films of all time, The Flash, which finally releases in June after first being announced in 2014. (The pair left the project as writer-directors in 2019 due to creative differences.)
Daley is most known for his role as the D&d-playing Sam Weir on the short-lived cult classic Freaks and Geeks, and when Paramount’s marketing department pitched a D&d-related reunion among Daley’s character,...

Stars: Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Hugh Grant, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, Daisy Head, Jason Wong | Written by Jonathan Goldstein, John Francis Daley, Michael Gilio | Directed by Jonathan Goldstein, John Francis Daley
Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez headline this fantasy action adventure thriller based on the titular Role Playing Game. Co-directed by Game Night duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves ticks all the right blockbuster boxes and could find its way to a successful franchise, with a prevailing role of a D-20.
Set in the Middle Ages of what might as well be called Fantasyland, the story begins with best buddies Edgin the thief (Pine) and Holga the barbarian (Rodriguez) escaping from prison in highly entertaining fashion, while simultaneously filling us in on some backstory as they’re recanting their deeds for the parole board. We learn that Edgin’s...
