Exclusive: Roswell, New Mexico star Michael Vlamis is preparing to make his feature directorial debut with Crossword, a psychological thriller in which he’ll star alongside Aurora Perrineau (When They See Us), Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows), Nick Thune (Love Life), Sarah Ramos (Winning Time), Karan Oberoi (Counterpart), Andoni Gracia (Warner. Bros’ upcoming The Flash) and Spencer Waldner (5 Years Apart).
The indie heading into production this spring centers on James (Vlamis) and Tessa (Perrineau), a young married couple coping with the loss of their daughter. While Tessa trudges forward focused on her bestselling children’s book series inspired by their daughter, James tries to find solace in the daily crossword. As the crossword takes on a mind of its own, the seams of the couple’s reality begin to unravel, revealing that death is more than a five-letter word.

Exclusive: Sujata Day from HBO’s Insecure is set to make her directorial debut with Definition Please which will star Ritesh Rajan and Jake Choi. Day wrote the script and will produce alongside Cameron Fife of June Street Productions. Gook and Ms. Purple‘s Justin Chon and Alex Chi will serve as consulting producers. Executive producers are Ahmad Cory Jubran and Hiren C. Surti.
Definition Please, which is written by Day, follows a Scripps Spelling Bee champion that must reconcile with her estranged brother when he returns home to help care for their sick mother. “Definition Please is loosely based on my relationship with my family and growing up Indian-American in my hometown of Greensburg, Pennsylvania,” Day told Deadline. “Instead of waiting for the powers that be to greenlight my film, I greenlit it myself.

Exclusive: After the warm reception it received at its world premiere at Sundance in January, Justin Chon’s sibling drama Ms. Purple has found a home. Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that it has acquired North American rights to Ms. Purple which features breakout performances from Tiffany Chu and Teddy Lee. Oscilloscope, which was founded by the late great Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch, will release the film in theaters later this year.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be working with Oscilloscope for the release of Ms. Purple,” said Chon. “Their independent ideology has always been in line with what we envisioned for this film so we are excited to work together in its release. Oscilloscope is punk rock in an industry where punk rock no longer exists.”

Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired North American rights to Gook, writer-director Justin Chon’s drama set during the 1992 Los Angeles Riots.
The company is planning an August theatrical release.
The film, which stars Chon, David So and newcomer Simone Baker, centres on two Korean American brothers that run their late father’s shoe store in a predominantly African American community of Los Angeles.
The brothers strike up a friendship with an 11-year-old African American girl. As one brother dreams of becoming a recording artist and the other struggles to keep the store afloat, racial tensions build to a breaking point as the La Riots break out.
