In Patty Jenkins' bonkers superhero flick "Wonder Woman 1984," various characters have access to a magical wish-granting stone that is causing havoc in the world. Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) wishes her deceased beloved Trevor (Chris Pine) to be resurrected, but he has to occupy another person's body in order to live. The evil villain Max Lord (Pedro Pascal) wishes that he becomes the wishing stone, giving him wish-granting powers. Wonder Woman's mousy co-worker Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig) first wishes to be more like Wonder Woman, but eventually goes a little power mad and angry when that wish is granted. Later, Barbara wishes to become an "apex predator," transforming herself into a were-cheetah. During the film's climax, the cheetah version of Barbara and Wonder Woman -- dressed like a golden angel -- will do battle on the shores of a rocky, remote island. There are concrete slabs, power lines, catwalks,...

Wonder Woman took cinemas by storm when it was released in 2017. Despite being a period piece set during World War 2, it managed to bring in droves of fans to witness Diana Prince’s origin tale. So, with the same creative team returning for a sequel and the ever-popular decade of the 80s being its setting, this could outdo the first in every way. But with expectations comes disappointment as the film released during Covid caused quite a stir for its creative partners and had some rather questionable CGI. So today on DC Revisited, we’re getting into it all as we dive into Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984.
After the first film made $822 Million worldwide, a sequel was announced just one month after release. A few months later, it was announced that writer/director Patty Jenkins and her co-writer Geoff Johns would return and serve the same roles for this new venture.

Sean Gunn, who audiences may know from his performance as the Ravager pirate Kraglin from writer/director James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise, has reunited with his older brother once again and joined the growing cast of the new DC Universe. According to Deadline, Sean Gunn will play Maxwell Lord, the DC Comics villain previously played by Pedro Pascal in Patty Jenkins' "Wonder Woman 1984." It's unclear if Lord will have a cameo role in James Gunn's "Superman: Legacy," but Deadline says the character will at least be referenced in the background of that movie and will appear in future DC projects. Will Sean be able to bring a similar level of goofiness to the role, or does James have something else in mind for this character? More on that in a minute.
While I typically like Sean Gunn as an actor, I'm kind of hoping he doesn't pop up in "Superman: Legacy,...

As they say, art imitates life, and for Pedro Pascal, playing a Nicolas Cage superfan wasn’t too far from the truth.
Pascal stars as a billionaire who offers 1 million to a fictionalized version of Cage to attend his birthday party in “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” in theaters April 22.
And while Pascal’s “Unbearable” character has villainous intentions, the “Narcos” alum noted that he previously tapped into an inspired “Cage rage” to play DC evil mastermind Max Lord in “Wonder Woman 1984.”
“I remember shooting a scene in ‘1984’ and, in the instant, I was like, what kind of energy do I need here?” Pascal told Entertainment Weekly. “And I remembered Nicolas Cage — before I ever met him, before the thought of ever making ‘Massive Talent’ existed — I remembered him jumping on the desk in ‘Vampire’s Kiss,’ kind of torturing [co-star] María Conchita Alonso. This article contains spoilers for Zack Snyder’s Justice League and other DC movies.
The timeline of the DC Extended Universe began in a fairly clear manner, with most of the events of Man of Steel set in 2013. As more films were released, containing flashbacks, or lacking a clear chronological setting, things became increasingly complicated. And by the time we got to Birds of Prey film, its precise placement in the Dceu is downright murky. But there are contextual in-universe clues in the form of media, gravestones, mugshot photos, or throwaway lines of dialogue that provide some clarity.
With the long-awaited release of the Snyder Cut of Justice League hitting HBO Max, it’s a good time to break down what we know so far about when some significant moments in Dceu history took place.

Exclusive: In one of the biggest TV castings of the year, The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal is set to headline The Last Of Us, HBO’s high-profile series adaptation of the Sony Playstation franchise from Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann.
Based on the critically acclaimed video game The Last of Us, developed by Naughty Dog exclusively for the PlayStation platforms, the story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel (Pascal), a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie (Game of Thrones‘ Bella Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.
Pascal’s Joel, tormented by past trauma and failure, must trek across a pandemic-ravaged America, all the while protecting a girl who represents the last hope of humanity.

Wonder Woman 1984 is about a magic stone that grants any wish you desire. Nothing too outlandish or crazy is beyond its power, and it can do everything from getting you a delicious cup of coffee to turning you into a superpowered Cats extra. But as magical as it is, it might struggle a bit with Warner Bros.’ wishful thinking, as they’ve just submitted this terrible movie for all eligible categories at the 93rd Academy Awards.
These nominations include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Gal Gadot for Best Actress, Kristen Wiig, Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen for Best Supporting Actress, and Chris Pine and Pedro Pascal for Best Supporting Actor. They’re also putting it up for Best Cinematography, Editing, Costume Design and Score.

After several delayed releases due to the pandemic, Wonder Woman 1984 was finally released on Christmas Day in theaters and for the folks in the United States, on the streaming service HBOMax. Though the sequel to the 2017 film fails to live up to the original, the cast is the strength of the film and allows the movie to rank higher than most films in the DC Universe.
Wonder Woman 1984, as the title suggests, is set in the mid-1980s during the peak of the Cold War between Russia and the United States and at a time everyone wanted more of everything. More money, more power, more nuclear weapons. It didn’t matter what it was, as long as it was more than another person.

(This article contains some spoilers for “Wonder Woman 1984”)
Films based on DC Comics properties, including the first “Wonder Woman” movie, didn’t used to do the whole post-credits thing, but that’s changed in the past few years as the DC Extended Universe franchise has evolved. And “Wonder Woman 1984” also joins that party with a bonus scene that pops up midway through the end credits.
This mid-credits scene doesn’t tease any upcoming movies from the larger DC Extended Universe like “The Suicide Squad” or “Aquaman 2,” but it might, possibly, suggest something about future “Wonder Woman” movies. Maybe. Though we think it’s likely just a fun extra moment that calls back to something Wonder Woman herself, Diana Prince (Gal Gadot), said earlier in the film.
In the scene, we see a woman walking through some sort of outdoor market when a large wooden pole starts to fall.

Comic book movie fans may not have seen the last of Kristen Wiig’s Barbara Minerva, the lonely Smithsonian worker who transforms into the villainous Cheetah during “Wonder Woman 1984.” In an interview with Den of Geek, franchise director Patty Jenkins confirms she purposefully left the fate of Barbara/Cheetah ambiguous at the end of “Wonder Woman 1984,” thus leaving the door wide open for the character to return in the next chapter of the “Wonder Woman” story. Unlike Pedro Pascal’s Max Lord, viewers never see Barbara renounce her wish. The film ends with Barbara alive watching the sunrise while no longer in her Cheetah form, her full story arc seemingly not complete.
“I have my reasons for making it ambiguous, and I think it’s not clear what her point of view [is] on everything that just happened,” Jenkins said. “I love that we wrap up Max Lord’s point of view,...

It’s widely acknowledged that between DC and Marvel, DC has the best villains. From the volatile anarchy of the Joker to the delicious anti-heroine of Catwoman, some have even become worthy of their own spin-off movies. So it was a fascinating decision by co-writer and director Patty Jenkins to take a different route with the baddies for Wonder Woman 1984. Namely, that neither are truly villainous.
Max Lord
Ok, Pedro Pascal’s Max Lord is a selfish, greedy con man who doesn’t care about what he does to society in the pursuit of money and power. He’s not evil per se, isn’t out for revenge, doesn’t actively wish death upon anyone; he just doesn’t care about the consequences of his actions. He is the embodiment of corrupt ‘80s capitalism and the pursuit of more,...

The ending of “Wonder Woman 1984” — specifically the confrontation between Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) and Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) — might not be the most coherent thing you’ve ever seen.
We do, however, believe that even if it doesn’t highlight all the details in the standard ways movies make sure the audience can keep up, the film contains everything you need to know to make sense of it. So this is mainly a situation where you really needed to pay attention to an earlier scene to understand what happened at the end.
So let’s break it down:
Max Lord uses his powers to basically steal control of the country from the president, and then he and Barbara Minerva, aka Cheetah (Kristen Wiig), head off to a secret facility where the government has created technology that can hijack the entire world’s broadcast signals.

This article contains Wonder Woman 1984 spoilers. Our spoiler-free review can be found here.
In Wonder Woman 1984 an ancient artifact forged by a god wreaks havoc in the consumerist 1980s by granting those who touch it one wish. Magical wishing objects are rife in storytelling, so much so that kids in playgrounds across the world already know what the correct answer is when you are given just one wish. And no, it’s not $1 million or world peace. It’s an infinite number of wishes.
While that is presumably against “dreamstone” rules in the world of Wonder Woman 1984 (and it usually is or the stories don’t work), sleazy would-be oil baron Max Lord (Pedro Pascal), not content with just the one wish, tries to find a loophole and wishes to be one with the stone itself. That way, he can control who gets a wish and take something in return.

This article contains major Wonder Woman 1984 spoilers for the ending of the film. We have a spoiler free review here.
Wonder Woman 1984 fits a lot of story into its 2.5 hour runtime, especially in its action-packed third act as Diana faces off against not one, but two villains: Cheetah and Maxwell Lord. While audiences have been encouraged to think of the DC blockbuster as a relative standalone, there’s much about the sequel that harkens back to the first film and there’s much about the movie that hints at what’s to come for our eponymous hero.
If you have some burning questions coming out of Wonder Woman 1984, you’re not alone. What happens at the end of the superhero sequel? What might it mean for the future of the franchise? And which characters might be back for future installments?
We have those answers and more ahead…

As 2020 comes to a close, Wonder Woman 1984 aims to spread a positive message of hope. As the title would suggest, the film takes place in 1984, where Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) now works in the archeology department of the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC. After befriending a sweet, but slightly awkward new colleague named Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig), things really start to go haywire when a greedy business man named Max Lord steals an ancient artifact with wish-fulfillment powers. Based on the synopsis alone, it may seem obvious who the film's villain is here, but the lines become even more blurred as the story progresses, asking audiences: what would you become if you were granted your deepest desire with a steep price?
For Barbara in particular, she wishes to become special like Diana, but in return, she ends up losing what makes her special. Over the course of the movie, we...

When Pedro Pascal was offered the role of Max Lord in “Wonder Woman 1984,” he’d been working almost non-stop since his breakout performance as Oberyn Martell on “Game of Thrones.” In just a few short years, the Chilean-born actor had bounced from shooting the Netflix series “Narcos” to action franchises “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” and “The Equalizer 2” to a memorable (and uncredited) cameo in the acclaimed drama “If Beale Street Could Talk.” By the time he landed in Hawaii for pre-production on the Netflix thriller “Triple Frontier,” Pascal was, in his words, “a little work weary.” But the opportunity to be directed by Patty Jenkins as the main villain in a giant superhero movie was simply too enticing to pass up.
With reviews singling out Pascal’s performance — “This year has not offered up a lot of reasons to just smile, but every second of Pedro Pascal’s performance made me do this,...

Ahead of the film's release, we virtually sat down with Gadot and Wiig as they shared some behind-the-scenes secrets from filming - including Wiig's favorite scenes to film . . .
. . . and the fact that they started planning the sequel while still filming the original movie.

If you ask the cast of Wonder Woman 1984 pretty much any question about the film, they will find a way to gush about how much they love working with Patty Jenkins. Did Pedro Pascal bring any of his past characters into his new role as Max Lord? No, but it took a new level of vulnerability that Patty supported him through. Has Kristin Wiig always wanted to play a villain? Yes, and almost no one has asked her—except for Patty, apparently.
“[Patty is] like a Japanese sword,” says Wonder Woman 1984 star and producer Gal Gadot to Den of Geek and other outlets during a 2018 set visit. “No, really. It’s the same wonderful creative rule of hard smarts, see the bigger picture and the macro and the micro and everything. She has all the same qualities but now everything is quicker. She’s been there, she knows how it works.

Filmmaker Patty Jenkins says she is hoping to use her upcoming film, Wonder Woman 1984, to add to the conversation on how each of us can discover the hero within.
The $200 million-budget superhero adventure was originally supposed to release earlier this year, but got delayed repeatedly amid the Covid crisis. Finally, the Gal Gadot-starrer will open in India just ahead of Christmas, on December 24.
"I hope that people come to the film and love it, of course. But I also hope that everyone gets something more out of it as well," Jenkins said.
"I want it to be a great time and a great superhero film experience, but I also hope to use our film to add to the conversation in this world about how each of us can find the hero within. That's what this world needs, so I'm so happy to get to be a part of that thought process,...

If Pedro Pascal gets his way, “The Mandalorian” won’t be the only time the actor gets to portray his beloved bounty hunting hero on Disney+.
Pascal discussed his Mando character during a recent interview with Comicbook.com shortly after Disney announced that a myriad of other “Star Wars” shows would premiere on the company’s streaming service over the next few years. Pascal said that he hadn’t been briefed by Disney’s higher-ups about Mando appearing in other shows but noted that he was keeping his hopes up for opportunities to reprise his role in other “Star Wars” shows.
“Man, fingers crossed. How could you not? This is like, this is something that’s so much bigger than all of us, and we’re all a passenger to it in a great way,” Pascal said. “And so, I find out, as it is decided and shared.”

EntertainmentThe ‘Wonder Woman’ sequel will release in India across theatres on December 24 in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.Tnm StaffHBO Max on Wednesday released the opening scene of the superhero movie, Wonder Woman 1984, which gives a peek into the life of young Diana in the fictional state of Themyscira, ruled by Amazons or warrior women. It starts with the young Diana (played by Lilly Aspell) running through the lush green forest in Themyscira to a huge stadium, where the warrior women are sitting in the amphitheatre, watching the majestic games. The young Diana then joins other older, competing warrior women. As she starts running in the competition, the scenes cut to older Diana (played by Gal Gadot) running through a street in a city, interspersed with scenes from Wonder Woman 1984 trailer. The opening scene also features Antiope (played by Robin Wright), who steps in to give the young Diana...

“Greatness is not what you think,” Robin Wright’s warrior leader Antiope tells the young Diana Prince (Lilly Aspell) at the start of Wonder Woman 1984 during a sequence depicting something akin to the Themysciran Olympic Games. “Pace yourself and watch.”
It’s an electric opening which sees a stadium full of women cheering the acrobatics of the island’s finest as they shoot, dive, leap, swing, and ride their way through a complex course to well-earned victory. The first superhero movie to be released during the pandemic, Wonder Woman 1984 has had to overcome obstacles of its own – primarily its release date and platform. Landing almost concurrently in cinemas and on VOD this Christmas is a different outcome to the one director Patty Jenkins and her cast and crew would have expected when they were filming back in 2018, yet it’s arrival in 2020 marks something of a shining light in a dismal year.

With just a single dedicated feature under her belt — the Patty Jenkins-directed 2017 smash hit “Wonder Woman” — star Gal Gadot’s iteration of the beloved DC heroine has already managed to span the earliest years of the Dceu, thanks to appearances in the team-up features “Justice League” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” But as the timeline of this particular blockbuster franchise only continues to tangle itself, from the addition of the upcoming “Snyder cut” to a new take on “The Suicide Squad,” its most human superhero is tasked with a very modern problem indeed: where can she possibly go next?
It’s the sort of issue that will, unfortunately, continue to knot the ever-expanding world of franchise filmmaking, the kind of creativity rooted in timelines and making them work. Franchise filmmaking has narrowed plenty of good ideas (and characters!), boxing them into not just time and place, but backstory and personality.

Before WarnerMedia’s decision last week to move Warner Bros’ entire 2021 feature film slate to HBO Max along with their theatrical releases, the company made the same move with its DC tentpole Wonder Woman 1984. The sequel to the 2017 hit will still premiere in cinemas on December 25, but now also at home via streaming.
Director Patty Jenkins discussed the decision for her movie Tuesday during an interview with Jess Cagle on the SiriusXM Stars channel that will air in its entirety next week. In a nutshell: she says there was “no good option.”
“If you had told me a year ago that we would ever go straight to streaming in any way, shape or form, I would have flipped out,” said Jenkins, who was joined in the town hall discussion with the film’s stars Gal Gadot, Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal. “Like I’m not for that plan in general,...

Early reactions for “Wonder Woman 1984” are in, and the highly anticipated sequel to Patty Jenkins’ and Gal Gadot’s “Wonder Woman” is raking in the praise.

“I got to watch Wonder Woman 1984 yesterday and… honestly it’s just what I needed. What we all need. It’s uplifting, hopeful, and so utterly Wonder Woman. Just a beautiful film with themes that hit you right in the heart,” Nerdist’s Amy Ratcliffe tweeted.

The Other History of the DC Universe, John Ridley and Giuseppe Cammuncoli’s new prestige miniseries from DC’s Black Label, has a particularly evocative title. When you hear that name, you think Howard Zinn, something like A People’s Crisis on Infinite Earths. It implies a grand, broad look at the sweep of DC Universe history from the perspective of marginalized people, voices who were not the ones telling the story (in and outside of it). But the book that is out this week is…not quite that.
Ridley was “less interested in putting obelisks on the timeline,” he said at a roundtable discussion with Den of Geek, and more focused on how some major signpost events in the history of the DC Universe were contextualized and absorbed for different characters.

Additionally, in a tweet, Jenkins confirmed that the film would be available both in open theaters and on HBO Max on December 25. “Wonder Woman 1984” will open in international markets on December 16. A new trailer also included the updated release details, including its HBO Max availability.
This move comes after the studio pushed its other 2020 heavy-hitter, Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” adaptation, from December to October of next year.

When Warner Bros. announced last month that “Wonder Woman 1984” would open on Dec. 25, it was no less than the sixth release date for the movie, and the third since the Covid-19 pandemic has forced the film industry to play a losing game of hopscotch with the theatrical release calendar. Once expected to be the biggest movie of the summer, “Wonder Woman 1984” has been pushed this year from June 5 to Aug. 14, then again to Oct. 2, and now to Christmas as practically the only major theatrical release left in the calendar year.
Asked about the ever-shifting release dates for the project for the latest Variety cover story, “Wonder Woman 1984” costar Pedro Pascal — who plays the villain Max Lord in the film — basically shrugged.
“As far as movie releases are concerned and the tremendous way that the industry is having to improvise around these circumstances, nothing is surprising,” Pascal said.

As Grant Morrison wraps up his sprawling multiversal epic in The Green Lantern, the architect of the modern DC Metaverse will also be finishing his foray into Earth One. Wonder Woman: Earth One Vol. 3, the finale of Morrison and Yanick Paquette’s multi-year graphic reimagining will be arriving in stores this march.
Volume three picks up right where the last story left off. After successfully beating back Uberfraulein, the leader of an invading Nazi force who the Amazons attempted to rehabilitate after her capture, Wonder Woman has become queen of the Amazons. Diana is preparing her sisters for an attack from man’s world; specifically, government weapons dealer Max Lord and his A.R.E.S. armors. She’s determined to fight back against what she perceives as the god of war and try and bring Themiscyran values to the world of man.
Lord’s presence feels like slick timing,...
