After two years at the University of Washington, she served in the United States Army from 2003-2010, where she was a Chief Warrant Officer and a OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter pilot-in-command and air mission commander for almost eight years in the 101st Airborne Division. She is a combat veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
She earned a Master of Science in Safety, Security, and Emergency Management with a specialization in 2012 and a graduate certificate in Homeland Security in 2011 from Eastern Kentucky University. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics with a minor in Management from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in 2010. Amber has researched terrorism events and contributed data to the Global Terrorism Database at the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism. - Her older sister, Capt. Kelly Allyn Smith, was a C-130 pilot in the California Air National Guard. Her younger sister, Lacey Anderson Smith, was an Army Chief Warrant Officer and flew the UH-60 Black Hawk. All three Smith sisters have served in Afghanistan. Her grandfather flew in the Army Air Corps as a lieutenant colonel during World War II and a commercial pilot after that. Her grandmother and mother were flight attendants. Multiple others in the family became commercial pilots, including their father, uncle and a couple of cousins.
