While Barbie and Oppenheimer were hogging the spotlight in 2023, a sneaky contender lurking in the shadows is now claiming its throne, and that is Chris Pratt’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This Italian plumber and his crew managed to stomp their way to the top, surpassing the combined profits of Across the Spider-Verse and Oppenheimer.

Recent reports from Deadline reveal that the Super Mario Bros. movie emerged as the most profitable of the year. Despite facing initial backlash, it conquered the box office tournament, even leaving behind Barbie’s profits at the box office by a huge margin.

In 2022, teenagers flocked to cinemas dressed in suits and tuxedos, there to see and celebrate the Illumination film Minions: The Rise of Gru. It was part of a trend, apparently developed organically, called #GentleMinions, of young fans celebrating (some, perhaps ironically) the film franchise with which they grew up.
Universal, which distributed the film, was, suffice it to say, thrilled, and the film ultimately delivered more than $939 million at the box office.
This year, Illumination has another film in the franchise hitting theaters, Despicable Me 4, and the studio is once again betting on a dose of social media virality to kick-start its campaign, turning to an athlete known as “The Joker.”
On Saturday, Nikola Jokić, the star NBA center for the Denver Nuggets, arrived for the team’s playoff game against the Los Angeles Lakers dressed suspiciously like Gru, the franchise’s protagonist. It quickly went viral, with memes and jokes all over TikTok,...

It's been 14 years since Illumination entered the movie scene with "Despicable Me," and in that time, the film series has become the highest-grossing animated franchise ever. It has done so on the back of catchy tunes, memorable characters, a fun story of a villain accidentally (and reluctantly) finding redemption, and also the cultural phenomenon that is the Minions.
After the second movie in the franchise, we've also seen a new spin-off movie in between each new "Despicable Me" film that's centered on the Minions and their adventures before they met their best friend and overlord Gru. Now, after a seven-year absence, Gru is finally back -- and this time, he encounters an even greater challenge than when he tried to steal the moon. Now, he's a father.
That's right, following the monumental success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Illumination is taking the "Shrek" route with Gru and the Minions by giving Gru a family.

‘All of Us Strangers’ Starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal Set for Christmas Release by Searchlight
Here’s some good news: Instead of delaying a film to 2024 due to the ongoing strike, Searchlight Pictures has dated an anticipated new film for December of this year. “All of Us Strangers,” the new film from “Weekend” and “Looking” filmmaker Andrew Haigh, will open in limited release in theaters on Dec. 22, 2023.
The film stars Andrew Scott as Adam, a screenwriter who has a chance encounter with his mysterious neighbor Harry (Oscar nominee Paul Mescal) one night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London. The encounter “punctures the rhythm of his everyday life” and Adam and Harry get closer. But when Adam is pulled back to his childhood home, it appears his long-dead parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) are both living and look the same age as the day they died 30 years before.
Haigh wrote and directed the film, which is based on the 1987 novel “Strangers” by Taichi Yamada.

Refresh for updates….Disney will keep it relatively short this Am in their presentation of their creme de la creme this year on the big screen versus Warner Bros’ two hour, yet robust, session yesterday.
In a first CinemaCon appearance, Alan Bergman, co Chairman of Disney Entertainment fired off the session after a new splashy Disney 100 logo for the studio.
“I wanted to personally thank you for your support,” said the Co-Chairman, “It’s so gratifying to see the business coming back.”
Indeed, exhibition is happy too after Disney practiced with theatrical day-and-date on Disney+ during the 2020-2021 portion of the pandemic. No more, the films shown here are for the big screen only.
“Thank you for the success of Avatar: The Way of Water,” Bergman added.

It was true in the early '90s and it remains true now: Mario is the king of video games. To this day, there's arguably no mascot more recognizable for an industry worth billions and, by the end of the '80s, Hollywood was starting to realize this whole video game thing was here to stay. Naturally, that meant capitalizing on the popularity with a major motion picture. It also meant that Nintendo's "Super Mario Bros." was the white whale of IP that any studio could hope to get their hands on. In 1993, the result of producer Roland Joffe's unlikely bid to win those rights hit theaters and set the tone for video game movies for years to come --...

With The Super Mario Bros. Movie coming to theaters later today, Illumination is ready to preview its next animated adventure for the silver screen. Today, the studio released a teaser trailer for Migration, an animated film about a family of ducks trying to convince their overprotective father to go on the vacation of a lifetime. Illumination’s Migration teaser trailer introduces the family and finds them taking to the skies for a breathtaking flight before being grounded by bad weather.
Benjamin Renner directs from a screenplay by Mike White. Illumination founder Chris Meledandri is serving as producer on the upcoming film. Initially, Illumination set Migration up for a summer release, but the film will flock to theaters during Christmas instead. While that’s a ways off, you don’t have to wait to check out the film’s gorgeous animation, quirky characters, and bold sense of adventure.

In 1993, the live-action adaptation of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros was so hideously chaotic that it led the games giant to largely shun the film industry until 2019’s Detective Pikachu. Instead of a moustachioed, hyperactive Italian plumber hopping across platforms and down pipes, we were presented with a depressive Bob Hoskins trapped in what looked like the rotting set of a Broadway musical production of Blade Runner. At least you couldn’t call it predictable, though. The Super Mario Bros Movie, an animated rendition of the game courtesy of Illumination (aka the Minion people), is nothing more and nothing less than what you’d expect from a Mario film.
Its comfortable mediocrity is no better captured than in its choice to cast Chris Pratt – the current face of generic, easy-to-market heroism – in the starring role. Pratt, it should be said, is perfectly capable of the sort of outsized performance Mario needed,...
