Kim Gordon has revealed her new sophomore solo album, The Collective. Stream it below.
Featuring icy, industrial, and hip-hop centric sonics, Kim Gordon narrates the scenes of The Collective with a stream-of-consciousness, collage-esque lyrical style. The album was produced by Justin Raisen, who has worked extensively with Lil Yachty, Yves Tumor, and Angel Olsen, and produced Gordon’s last album, 2019’s No Home Record.
The Sonic Youth co-founder previewed The Collective earlier this year with the laundry-list lead single “Bye Bye,” which we named as a “fucking banger” in our Song of the Week column, and the toxic masculinity-skewering “I’m a Man.” She also shared the noisy, mantra-heavy “Psychedelic Orgasm” this week. Stream Kim Gordon’s The Collective below.

IndieWire shares an exclusive first look at the film here ahead of its March 10 premiere in Austin at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival. Riegel previously directed 2021’s “Holler,” a blue-collar drama starring Jessica Barden.
Here’s the SXSW synopsis for “Dandelion”: “Dandelion, a struggling Cincinnati singer-songwriter in a downward spiral, takes a last-ditch-effort gig at a motorcycle rally in South Dakota where she meets Casey, a guitarist who walked away from his dream long ago. As Dandelion joins Casey’s nomadic group of struggling musicians, the kindred spirits make music together and strike up a whirlwind romance. Keith Richards takes on the Velvet Underground’s classic “I’m Waiting for the Man” for an upcoming tribute album dedicated to the music of Lou Reed.
Arriving a day before what would have been Reed’s 82nd birthday, Richards also shared a new video of studio footage from the recording of his rendition, which puts his trademark Rolling Stones riffage on the Velvet Underground & Nico track.
“To me, Lou stood out. The real deal!” Richards said in a statement. “Something important to American music and to All Music! I miss him and his dog.

For an unfinished novel, Edith Wharton's 1938 tome The Buccaneers certainly has enjoyed a healthy life of adaptations through the years since it arrived posthumously. The latest to take a crack is actor/writer Katherine Jakeways, who has overseen this new show version for Apple TV+, and given it a post-modern spin (not just around the dance floor). See the trailer below…
Girls with money, men with power. New money, old secrets. A group of fun-loving young American girls explode into the tightly corseted London season of the 1870s, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash as the land of the stiff upper lip is infiltrated by a refreshing disregard for centuries of tradition. Sent to secure husbands and titles, the buccaneers’ hearts are set on much more than that, and saying, “I do” is just the beginning…

Apple TV+ is channeling Bridgerton and The Sex Lives of College Girls in the first trailer for its new drama series The Buccaneers, and we're definitely interested in what comes next.
The series has a target audience, and running the trailer to the sound of Olivia Rodrigo's "All-American B----" is a choice.

Interestingly, original music from Folick, Lucius, Alison Mosshart, Warpaint, Gracie Abrams, Sharon Van Etten, Bully, Danielle Ponder, and more are thrown in for good measure.

Ethan Hawke and Maya Hawke are just a couple of over 20 musicians who’ve contributed to Light in the Attic & Friends, a covers compilation that’ll be released for Record Store Day’s annual Black Friday event. As a preview, the father-daughter actor duo have shared their rendition of Willie Nelson’s “We Don’t Run,” featuring production from Christian Lee Hutson and mixing by Jay Som’s Melina Duterte.
Considering the delicate indie folk Maya releases on her own, it’s not too much of a surprise that Nelson’s classic outlaw country would be a staple of the Hawke household while she was growing up: “This song is off Willie’s brilliant album Spirit, which has been a mainstay in our home since it was released in 1996,” Ethan said in a statement. “Everybody needs a good anthem song. When Tyler Childers was named Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2018 Americana Honors & Awards, he let loose with an acceptance speech for the ages, denying the very term “Americana” and pointedly declaring himself a country artist.

What is a folk festival to do after becoming a global news story? That was the central question for this year’s Newport Folk Festival, which over the past half-decade has drawn increased attention with a slew of surprise guests, world premieres, and special appearances — from Dolly Parton to Chaka Khan, and culminating in last year’s revelatory return of Joni Mitchell after her several-decade absence from the stage.

It’s a wish-you-had-gills type of humid September day in Nashville, but Lucinda Williams is comfortably out of the soup, sitting at the kitchen table of Ray Kennedy’s Room & Board Studio telling tales about life on the road to a gang of touring lifers including Tommy Stinson and Jesse Malin. They’re rare, behind-the-curtain anecdotes, many of which she shares in her superb memoir, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You. Musical tag-teaming doesn’t have results much more fruitful than what came about when the showrunners of “A Small Light” picked Ariel Marx to compose the score for the limited series and Este Haim to serve as executive music producer. Neither Haim nor Marx was in a position to take anything about the job lightly, given that the eight-episode series for National Geographic and Disney+ tells the story of a Dutch woman, Miep Gies, who helped hide Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis. Yet, in their very separate roles, both found ways to bring musical light or even levity into a drama that inevitably skews toward tension.
Este Haim took on the Emp job for the first time with “A Small Light” after previously scoring or co-composing “Maid” and “Cha Cha Smooth” — on top of her day job as one-third of the rocking sister trio Haim. For “A Small Light,...

Williams’ longtime road manager, Travis Stephens, also co-wrote six songs on the album.

The first episode of Season 2 of “Yellowjackets,” which is now streaming on Showtime, features songs from Sharon Van Etten and Tori Amos that the drama’s creators had been trying to find a place for since the hit show debuted.
Van Etten’s teen angst track “17” opens the episode, and co-creator Ashley Lyle explained to TheWrap that she was blown away when when realized that the singer-songwriter is a big “Yellowjackets” fan.
“I went to see a show at the Greek last summer and it was Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten,” Lyle said. “I was totally unprepared, because when Sharon came on, the lights all went out and all the house lights went down. And then she opened her set with the audio from the scene of Natalie (Juliette Lewis) in the rehab center and I felt like I was having an out-of-body experience. I was like, ‘What’s happening?...

Gina Birch has been creating punk art her entire life—but she’s just getting started. What could be more hardcore than dropping your first solo album at 67? She became a legend with the Raincoats, the London punk band she started in 1977, four renegade women inventing their own kind of racket. But she’s got that same rebel spirit on her new solo debut I Play My Bass Loud, on Jack White’s Third Man Records. It’s a statement of purpose, and one of the year’s freshest, funniest rock albums so far.

Ahead of the EP’s April 14th release, the singer has shared “Nothing’s Free,” a track about “that point when self-denial breaks, and you notice how long youʼve been restraining who you are,” Olsen said in a statement.

If you loved Angel Olsen’s 2022 album Big Time, you’re in luck: the singer-songwriter is issuing a new EP of songs from that project’s recording sessions called Forever Means, and the track “Nothing’s Free” is available to stream now.
Olsen began pondering the definition of “forever” while on the road. “I was somewhere traveling,” she recalled in a statement, “stopped for a few days and wandering the city, and I was thinking ‘what does forever really mean? What are the things I’m seeking in friendship or love, and how can forever be attainable if we’re always changing?’” Ultimately, Olsen decided that “Forever is to remain curious, never letting yourself think you’re finished learning or exploring, while trying also to be kind and honest.”
Out April 14th via Jagjaguwar (pre-orders are ongoing), Forever Means was co-produced and mixed by Jonathan Wilson. While the project’s...

The most common question at the annual AmericanaFest – a SXSW-style multi-venue music festival held in Nashville since 2000 – is “what is Americana?” “Diverse” seems to be the answer, after decades of favouritism shown towards white, male country singers.
At the event’s opening awards ceremony, which takes place at The Ryman, aka country music’s “mother church”, the sensational Canadian songwriter Allison Russell picks up a well-deserved Album of the Year for her illuminating solo debut Outside Child. Other gongs go to bluesy husband-and-wife duo The War and Treaty, flamboyant gypsy jazz renegade Sierra Ferrell, and the Grammys-conquering LGBT+ icon Brandi Carlile. There’s still room for the old guard, too. Robert Plant, Chris Isaak and Lyle Lovett all make appearances, as does the great Lucinda Williams, while tribute is paid to late honky tonk singer-songwriter Luke Bell, who died last month aged 32.
Aside from the established names, AmericanaFest is also a hotbed of young talent.

After a summer where many music festivals felt anticlimactic and unfulfilling (Was standing on dirt or gravel for hours on end ever fun?), AmericanaFest 2022 delivered one of its most satisfying and diverse weeks in the history of the Nashville event. While the festival suffered a major blow with the loss of its de facto home base, the Cannery Complex, to the city’s aggressive development, artists and bands found new venues at which to play and friendly audiences eager to experience something fresh. Here’s the sounds, parties, and places that moved us.

Angel Olsen showed an affinity for working with classic country sounds on her latest album Big Time, which came out in June. On Tuesday, Olsen released an updated version of the title track, which features country maverick Sturgill Simpson.
A lilting countrypolitan waltz about the rush of falling hard for someone, “Big Time” is recast as a duet here between Olsen and Simpson. “Good morning kisses, giving you all mine,” Olsen begins in the opening verse, as with the original, but the second verse sounds like an answer as Simpson takes over.

Prior to performing a swerving version of Lucinda Williams’ “Drunken Angel” for an intimate dinner party in Nashville on Monday night, Jason Isbell remarked how some songwriters just can’t write a good song anymore. But Williams, he said, was so unfailingly talented that she could restart her career right now and in 10 years “we’d be right back here.” Here was the BMI Troubadour Award celebration, which honored Williams — the first woman to receive the award — for decades of songwriting greatness.
