In one of the last interviews he gave before his death this week, Bruce Brown talks about chasing summer and surf around the globe, turning a $50,000 gamble into a $33m cult classic
The first Hollywood movies about surfing like Gidget and Beach Blanket Bingo gave the sport a bad rep. They made us out to be a bunch of idiots having food fights. We wanted to show how it really was: a legitimate sport. In 1955, while I was doing military service in Hawaii, I started filming my buddies on the waves. By the early 60s, my surf films were giving me a regular income, and I decided to take more time over one.

In an announcement guaranteed to pique the interest of sci-fi convention attendees everywhere, Star Wars stalwart Mark Hamill will be lending his voice to an animated film inspired by the life and work of legendary horror author H.P. Lovecraft. Hamill has joined the cast of the upcoming Howard Lovecraft And The Undersea Kingdom, slated for release in late 2017. Other actors attached to the Shout! Factory/Arcana Studios production include Oscar winner Christopher Plummer, Doug Bradley (aka Pinhead from Hellraiser), and Jeffrey Combs. Mark Boal, writer and producer of “Zero Dark Thirty” and “The Hurt Locker,” has settled his case with the U.S. government over the protection of unpublished material and confidential information.
The decision is being celebrated by First Amendment experts and more than 36 major national media organizations, as it calls for the government to drop its subpoena of Boal’s tapes, allowing him to protect all confidential material on them.
Boal filed his suit in Los Angeles federal court against President Barack Obama and U.S Army Prosecutor Major Justin Oshana after Oshana threatened to subpoena all 25 hours of Boal’s taped interviews with accused Army deserter and prisoner-of-war Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl. Several of the tapes were used as the basis of the recent “Serial” podcast that Boal produced.
“I’m happy that the Army ultimately agreed to uphold the traditions of a free civilian press,” Boal said in a statement.

The investigative journalist and Oscar-winning screenwriter and producer of The Hurt Locker hailed on Tuesday the settlement of his Bowe Bergdahl recordings case with the Us government.
Boal sued the U.S. Army in July when the institution tried to subpoena him to hand over 25 hours of recorded interviews with Bergdahl, the Army deserter who faces a court martial, for the Serial podcast.
Boal’s attorney Jean-Paul Jassy of Jassy Vick Carolan said on Tuesday that Boal v United States was settled on December 6 with an agreement to protect unpublished material and confidential information.
Under the terms of the settlement, the government will drop the subpoena and allow Boal to protect the confidentiality of the tapes.
Boal will withdraw his demand for attorney fees and will verify the interview tapes contain Bergdahl’s authentic voice, before a court martial if necessary.
Furthermore, small portions of his interviews with Bergdahl, which were either...

Mark Boal, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of The Hurt Locker who also wrote Zero Dark Thirty, is suing Barack Obama and the Us government over a threat to seize his taped interviews with Bowe Bergdahl.
The accused Army deserter and prisoner of war is facing a general court-martial and Boal, through his lawyers, is attempting to prevent the military prosecutor in the Bergdahl case from forcing a private citizen [Boal] into military court to relinquish legally protected materials for an ongoing military trial.
“Mark Boal fully supports the military justice system and believes that Bergdahl has to face the music in a fair judicial process,” said his lawyer. “But Boal is a civilian and a journalist, and under the First Amendment, he should not be hauled into a military court to divulge his unpublished and confidential materials. We are asking the federal court in Los Angeles to protect Mark Boal’s constitutional rights.”

Shout! Factory and Vancouver-based Arcana Studios have inked a North American distribution deal for the forthcoming animated film "Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom," the companies announced today. Based on Bruce Brown's popular graphic novel, the film, written, directed, and produced by Sean Patrick O'Reilly ("Pixies"), will receive multi-platform U.S. and Canadian releases from Shout! Factory in 2016. The timely acquisition capitalizes on the current vogue for big-screen comic book adaptations, as well as renewed interest in author H.P. Lovecraft, whose work inspired a thicket of allusions in the first season HBO's "True Detective." The graphic novel introduces Lovecraft's particular brand of eerie fiction—including the famed book of magic known as the Necronomicon—to a new generation, following young Howard through a portal and into a dangerous frozen world, where he befriends a monster named Spot. The move also signals further...
