Exclusive: MRC Film has named its romance label, led by Elizabeth Cantillon, Bisous Pictures—also announcing the appointment of Sydney Fleischmann as VP, Development and Production.
Bisous Pictures’ first film Persuasion, starring Dakota Johnson, Cosmo Jarvis, Henry Golding and Richard E. Grant, is an adaptation of the Jane Austen novel, which debuts on Netflix today. Carrie Cracknell (Broadway’s Sea Wall / A Life) directed the film—made with Mad Chance and Fourth and Twenty Eight Films—in her feature debut, from a script by Alice Victoria Winslow and Ron Bass.
Going forward, the label will explore a wide range of stories within the romance genre that are inclusive and expansive, traditional and modern, original and literature based, and real-life stories that serve all audiences. It remains in development on previously announced projects including:
Photos of You, based on Tammy Robinson’s novel, which is being adapted for the screen by Tom Dean. Jenny Gage and Tom Betterton of All This Panic are attached to direct. Pic centers on Ava, who after a devastating diagnosis, breaks off her engagement, decides to throw herself a groom-less wedding, and becomes somewhat of a sensation and voice of empowerment. She discovers that it’s never too late to find the love of your life. 28 Summers, adapted by Allie Hagan. Based on Elin Hilderbrand’s #1 New York Times bestselling novel, 28 Summers explores the agony and romance of a one-weekend-per-year affair, its profound impact on the lovers and the lives of the people around them. The Return, adapted by Tom Dean. Based on Nicholas Sparks’ novel, which spent 22 weeks on bestseller lists, focuses on an injured army doctor who moves into his late grandfather’s home in New Bern, North Carolina, where he encounters two women whose secrets will change the course of his life.
Fleischmann comes to MRC from Duplass Brothers Productions, where she was most recently a development and production executive. She notably served as an executive producer on that company’s HBO anthology series, Room 104.
“We’re proud to unveil our name, Bisous, the french word for kiss, which honors our label’s focus on the romance genre in all its various forms,” said Cantillon. “We also welcome Sydney, a fantastically talented exec, to our team as we continue to expand our label and we cannot wait to introduce our first film, ‘Persuasion,’ to audiences alongside our partners at Netflix.”
MRC Film’s releases have collectively earned more than 6B in worldwide box office and received accolades including 12 Academy Award nominations and 11 Golden Globe noms. Coming up for the company is writer-director Matt Charman’s Netflix film The Mothership, starring Halle Berry. It recently released David Frankel’s Paramount+ dramedy Jerry and Marge Go Large, starring Bryan Cranston and Annette Bening, and has also been behind films like Ted, Knives Out, Baby Driver, Babel and The Lovebirds. MRC has co-financed films including The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, the Peter Rabbit franchise, the second and third installments of Hotel Transylvania, 22 Jump Street, Think Like a Man Too and Fast & Furious 7. It’s also a partner of Deadline’s parent company Penske Media in two joint ventures in publishing and content, where both companies hold significant ownership.

Room 104 returns for its fourth and final season on HBO this evening, Friday July 24. The end of the anthology series is “bittersweet” for Mark Duplass, who created the show with his brother Jay.
Joking that HBO must have felt really bad for canceling Togetherness to give them four seasons of the show, Duplass talks about working with up-and-coming filmmakers throughout the four years and how he hopes to use this approach going forward with other projects.
The Morning Show star discusses the difficulties of breaking into the business, and how he encouraged actors including Dave Bautista, Jillian Bell, Kevin Nealon and Erinn Hayes to appear in the fourth season.
He opens up about The Murderer, the first episode which he stars in, writes, directs and performs the music, as well as the show’s first animated episode.

It’s almost time for one last check-in to “Room 104.” Mark and Jay Duplass’ ethereal HBO anthology series will premiere its fourth and final season on July 24 and IndieWire is exclusively premiering the season’s first trailer.

The series’ new trailer promises to explore a dizzying range of genres and characters for the series’ send-off and even teases a glimpse at the season’s original songs, one of which will be performed by Duplass.
Per HBO, Season 4 will also include the series’ first-ever animated episode, and the premiere entry will mark the first time that Mark Duplass stars, writes, directs, and performs original music for the series. Stories...

On an Atx panel for Room 104 today, co-creator Mark Duplass reflected on his journey with the series, while teasing details regarding its fourth season.
The anthology series centers on a seemingly unremarkable room in an American hotel, exploring the lives of an eclectic group of characters that pass through it. Shifting tonally from episode to episode, it’s covered everything from horror and thriller material to comedy, wrapping its third season last November.
“This is officially our last season, until everyone comes in and gives us huge numbers,” Duplass joked. “And then we’ll be back for another season.”
Joining Duplass on the live-streamed panel, moderated by Indiewire’s Steve Greene, were executive producers Mel Eslyn and Sydney Fleischmann, composer Julian Wass, along with actors Karan Soni and Natalie Morales, all of whom have now also served as directors on Room 104.

Atx Television Festival has added the HBO series “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark,” “I May Destroy You” and “Room 104” to its first-ever virtual festival programming lineup, Variety has learned exclusively.
In addition, “A Black Lady Sketch Show” creator and showrunner Robin Thede will be joining the festival as part of the “Showrunners: State of the Union” on June 7, and Atx and HBO have announced the panelists for the previously-announced “Perry Mason” panel.
“We can still remember getting HBO’s support for the first ever physical festival in 2012; we may have cried,” said Caitlin McFarland, co-founder, Atx Television Festival. “We were told then that they wanted to say in Year 10 that they were there from the beginning. We aren’t quite to our 10th Season, but as we completely pivot to virtual, HBO has stayed by our side. We’ll miss seeing them at the Paramount Theater on Opening Night,...

In the Season 3 finale of “Room 104,” the motel room that has housed three dozen different self-contained stories does something it certainly hasn’t done before: It sprouts into a rainforest.
Even if you haven’t seen the episode yet, “Room 104” executive producer Sydney Fleischmann is Ok with you still knowing about it.
“Our initial reaction with a lot of things is, ‘Oh my God, that’s a spoiler! That’s gonna give away everything!’ And then we sort of talk ourselves down and remember no one has any sense of anything that happens in the room. It’s all going to be fresh and weird and new,” Fleischmann told IndieWire. “And so showing the room as a jungle is not, it’s not a spoiler, it’s really alluring and it’s weird. I think the fun part is that it’s much more than ‘the room is filled with green.

Friday the 13th may be the day when many horror fans pay a visit to Camp Crystal Lake, but it's also the day HBO invites viewers back into Room 104 for the third season premiere of the thought-provoking (and oftentimes unsettling) anthology series. With HBO kicking off the third season following its debut at the Tribeca TV Festival, Daily Dead took part in a roundtable conference call with executive producer Sydney Fleischmann and co-creator/executive producer/writer/director Mark Duplass to discuss the horror-centric storylines in season 3 (including vampires), the importance of working with innovative filmmakers on the ambitious series (including Creep director Patrick Brice), the challenges (and rewards) of setting an entire series in the same hotel room, and where the ideas for the show come from.
On when season 3 was filmed:
Sydney Fleischmann: We got back and wrapped about a year and a half ago, and then wrapped the post about a year ago.

Jay and Mark Duplass are creators who don’t like to be put in a box, even if they’re making six hours of television set within the same four walls.
“Room 104,” the new HBO anthology series from the Duplass brothers, tells individual, episodic stories in each of its 12 half-hour installments, and all 12 are set within the same cheap, dingy hotel room. The first episode, which premiered at the Atx TV Festival Saturday evening, is a lot closer to Mark Duplass’ work in indie films “Creep” and “The One I Love” than the brothers’ former HBO comedy.
During a panel discussion following the episode, Duplass said he felt inspired by the constraints of the premise.
“I have something like 218 ideas in a Word document on my computer,” Duplass said.
Noting how it felt like he was back making low-budget indie films, Duplass said he wrote seven of the 12 episodes...
