Ventana Sur 2023: Major Narratives, from Frémaux, Rebordinos’ Support for Argentine Agency Incaa to the Seismic Pivot in International Business
Image
In bigger picture terms, the major highlights of Ventana Sur were a masterclass by Cannes head Thierry Frémaux and an impromptu speech by San Sebastián director José Luis Rebordinos, heads of the most important film festivals in the world and Spanish-speaking world, supporting the continued existence of Incaa. There words came after Argentinian President elect Javier Milei had vowed on the campaign trail to shutter Argentina’s state-backed film-tv agency if voted into power.

In industry terms, never has Ventana Sur been this big, its final attendance numbers sky-rocketing to 4,300, some 30% up on 2022, beyond even the wildest expectations of organizers, Cannes Marché du Film and the Incaa.

Put that down in part to new sections – Shoot the Book, Fantasmática, and Show Shorts – and enlargement of other sections, such as El Principio del Film and Solo Series. Latin America seems to have a bottomless well of new talent. The biggest reason,...

Futurama Loves Making Fun of Season 4's 'Jurassic Bark'
Image
The following contains spoilers for Futurama Season 8, Episode 6, "I Know What You Did Next XMas," now streaming on Hulu.

One of the things that's always stood out about Futurama is the way the show balances a constant goofy tone with more emotional beats. Whether that's endearing romance, surprising introspection, or heartbreaking tragedy, Futurama's best episodes have run the gamut of emotional beats. But it's also made a habit of turning one of its single saddest moments into a punchline over and over again.

Season 8's "I Know What You Did Next XMas" -- Written by Ariel Ladensohn and Directed by Crystal Chesney-Thompson -- features a sly gag at the expense of Fry's long-dead dog, Seymour. Seymour was introduced in one of Futurama's most infamously somber episodes, often held up as one of TV's saddest sequences. It's far from the first time the sci-fi/comedy has poked fun...

Futurama's Planet Express Ship Is Better Than the Enterprise
Image
Futurama is a unique entry in the science-fiction genre for a lot of reasons. Its flexibility in terms of tone and content has always allowed it to be impressive and silly at the same time. Even as the series pokes fun at the tropes and conventions of the genre, Futurama has explored sci-fi through exciting action, compelling romance and deep philosophy. One of the unique elements of the series is the ship at the center of its story, which stands out above any other major vessel in the genre.

The Planet Express ship is easily one of the best ships in sci-fi history, far exceeding the potential of more famous vessels like Star Trek's iconic USS Enterprise or Star Wars' Millennium Falcon. It's shockingly durable, endlessly adaptable and boasts one of the most powerful engines in the genre. The Planet Express ship is one of a kind, and Futurama's...

Ventana Sur, Latin America’s Biggest Market, Sets Dates, Preps First Full-On Regional Reunion
Image
Buenos Aires’ Ventana Sur, Latin America’s biggest film-tv market, has set dates for its 2022 edition, which promises to be the first full-on reunion of its burgeoning regional industry in three long years.

Running Monday, Nov. 28 to Friday, Dec. 2, Ventana Sur has also launched a call for applications for Proyecta, its film co-production forum organized by Cannes’ Marché du Film and the San Sebastian Festival and targeting first or second film projects in development seeking co-production between Europe and Latin America.

Launched in 2009, the Cannes Festival/Film Market initiative, organized in partnership with Argentina’s Incaa agency, looks vital to regional rebuild in Latin America.

It also catches the industry as it is pulled by opposing pressures. Many film-tv professionals are anxious to curb non-essential travel. Yet film and TV industries are being positioned by regional and national governments alike in Latin America as a priority growth sector for post-pandemic recovery.

Will Smith, Jared Leto, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Adam Beach, Viola Davis, Jay Hernandez, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Margot Robbie, Cara Delevingne, and Karen Fukuhara in Suicide Squad (2016)
DC has some interesting characters, some of whom are so interesting that they pop up in every possible media. A big one is actually Deadshot, an expert marksman, mercenary and assassin. He's ended up in a variety of DC multimedia offerings, including the Arrowverse and the 2016 Dceu movie Suicide Squad.

In those two worlds, Deadshot was played respectively by Michael Rowe and Will Smith. While some things about the character never change, each actor brought his own unique take to portraying Deadshot. Two Arrow Stars Say They Want To Appear On Legends Of Tomorrow
Arrow concluded after eight seasons this past January, bringing an emotional end to the Emerald Archer’s adventures. The handy thing about the Arrowverse, though, is that the rest of Team Arrow could feasibly crossover onto any other show in The CW’s DC shared universe. Perhaps the most obvious choice is Legends of Tomorrow, as the Waverider has always been home to characters from other corners of the franchise. It seems that two former Arrow stars would be up for such a switch as well.

ComicBook.com caught up with both Black Canary Juliana Harkavy and Michael Rowe Aka Deadshot and asked them for their thoughts on a potential hop over to LoT. Unsurprisingly, they both love the idea. For Harkavy, she’ll hopefully be appearing in Green Arrow and the Canaries, anyway, but she’s still open to a Legends role, too.

“Legends is one of my favorite shows...

Arrow Actor Michael Rowe Wants To Return As Deadshot
Before Will Smith, Michael Rowe portrayed the only live-action version of Deadshot on Arrow. But since Smith won’t be returning for the sequel to Suicide Squad, the actor has expressed interest in reprising his role as Floyd Lawton.

Most fans would agree that David Ayer’s 2016 movie was a convoluted mess, and ultimately, a missed opportunity. That being said, Smith’s Deadshot was undeniably one of the things that made Suicide Squad tolerable. But before there were plans to cast the legendary actor in the role, Michael Rowe portrayed Lawton as one of Oliver Queen’s first enemies in Starling City. He then continued to reprise his part several times as an agent of A.R.G.U.S. and a member of the Suicide Squad. As a matter of fact, there were even plans to develop a spinoff show centering around the character, but with Will Smith coming along,...

Crown and Anchor Movie Review: A Dark, Biting Look at Family and Abuse
Family can lift you up, or they can drag you down.

In the case of Jimmy Downey, his family filled with abuse and crime threatened to pull him under so far he escaped leaving them far behind.

But when Jimmy's beloved mother, Rose, dies, Jimmy heads back to his hometown to face a lifetime of disillusion and disappointment that he was never able to escape no matter how much distance he set.

Michael Rowe, best known by TV Fanatics as Floyd Lawton/Deadshot on Arrow, stars as Jimmy, a police officer brimming with loneliness and unreleased anger.

His escape from St. John's, Newfoundland, to Toronto didn't heal his wounds after watching his father brutalize his mother for years, nor did it ease his pain at walking away and leaving his family to their own devices even if Jimmy was trying to be a better man.

We're only briefly treated to...

Zac Efron at an event for Running Wild with Bear Grylls (2014)
Berlin Film Review: ‘The Golden Glove’
Zac Efron at an event for Running Wild with Bear Grylls (2014)
A recurring controversy flared up again at last month’s Sundance festival, this time with the Zac Efron-starring Ted Bundy biopic “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” as its lit match: Where is the line drawn between representation and celebration in films about appalling figures, particularly with a swoon-worthy sex symbol in the lead? That’s an issue less likely to be raised with “The Golden Glove,” Fatih Akin’s hyper-grisly true-crime study of another notorious 1970s serial killer, Fritz Honka: No one could accuse the German filmmaker of glamorizing anyone or anything in a film so strenuously dedicated to its own seaminess, you can practically smell the human flesh rotting on screen.

As played by 22-year-old actor Jonas Dassler, aged up and slathered in repulsive prosthetics, the film’s Honka is practically the anti-Efron/Bundy: a freakish charisma void so inhuman that it’s hard to feel...

Stephen Amell Teases A Returning Fan Favorite For Arrow Season 7
With Arrow set to return from its summer vacation in a matter of hours, viewers should know that Oliver Queen will run into a few old friends while in prison. To be more specific, Vinnie Jones, Michael Jai White and Cody Rhodes will each reprise their respective roles of Danny Brickwell, Bronze Tiger and Derek Sampson.

Now, from the sound of it, yet another familiar face is taking up residence at Slabside, but we’re going to have to wait to find out exactly who it is. While recently speaking with ComicBook.com, lead actor Stephen Amell first shed light on what’s to come by discussing how Ollie’s in a much different place when we join him:

“After the premiere, we really isolate Oliver. He goes a long time without interacting with really any familiar face. I have enjoyed the couple of visitors that I’ve had. I...

Arrow's Willa Holland has revealed that Warner Bros nixed TV's Suicide Squad to make room for the film version...

This article contains spoilers for Arrow (if you've watched up to season 4 episode 11, you'll be fine).

Fans of The CW's superhero shows will know that Arrow introduced its own version of DC Comics' famous Suicide Squad long before the Suicide Squad movie was announced. Cynthia Addai-Robinson played Amanda Waller, Michael Rowe was Deadshot and - in a very brief cameo - Tara Strong's voice and Cassidy Alexa's physical form combined to portray Harley Quinn.

You may have noticed that Arrow has moved away from the Suicide Squad storyline recently, with Waller and Deadshot both killed and Harley never released from her cell. Willa Holland - who plays Thea Queen in the show - has now revealed that it's no coincidence that these characters were...

Deathstroke to Arrive in a Future DC Comics Movie?
Stephen Amell in Arrow (2012)
Six months before Warner Bros. officially announced their Suicide Squad movie back in September 2014, The CW's hit TV series Arrow introduced their own version of this villainous group, which featured DC Comics characters Amanda Waller (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), Deadshot (Michael Rowe), Bronze Tiger (Michael Jai White) and Shrapnel (Sean Maher). While this lineup is obviously much different than the Suicide Squad movie lineup, the series eventually killed off both Amanda Waller and Deadshot, leading fans to speculate if they were removed because of the Suicide Squad movie. Another pivotal Arrow character, Deathstroke (Manu Bennett) hasn't been seen since Season 3, and Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim recently teased on his Tumblr page that he won't be popping up anytime soon, since he is "currently tied up in another DC project."

It has been clear from the start that the DC Extended Universe exists separately from the TV universe, which allows for two...

'Arrow' is addicted to resurrection, will bring Another character back from the dead
Stephen Amell in Arrow (2012)
If "Arrow" had an alternate name, it would be called "Resurrection", or at least "All Hail the Lazarus Pit". I say this — mostly in jest — because "Arrow" is bring another character back from the dead this week in the episode titled "Brotherhood". While Thea (Willa Holland) and Sara (Caity Lotz) needed the help of the Lazarus Pit to bring them back, this character doesn't need magic, he needs discovery. Much like Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), who was thought to be dead until Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) and Curtis (Echo Kellum) discovered his message, this character was also only presumed dead. Who is this mysterious character, now returning to the land of the living? Andrew Diggle, John Diggle's believed-to-be-dead brother. Andy is played by Eugene Byrd, whose acting credits include "Bones", "8 Mile", "Heroes", and previous flashback episodes of "Arrow". According to John Diggle (David Ramsey), Andy was killed by Deadshot (Michael Rowe...

With filming now well under way on Warner Bros and DC Comics' Suicide Squad movie, it seems like the perfect time to cast an eye over the lesser-known members of the world of Batman and Superman.

The film's Comic-Con trailer is a stunner

John Ostrander: Face To Face
Stranger Than Fiction, a 2006 film from director Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Monster’s Ball, and World War Z, among others), is a favorite of Mary’s and mine. It that starred Will Farrell in a very atypical Will Farrell role, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, Queen Latifah, and Emma Thompson.

The voice turns out to be a world famous author who is writing a story about an IRS auditor named Harold Crick. The author, Karen Eiffel, always kills off her main character at the end of the book. The real Harold’s only hope to survive is to find the reclusive author and convince her not to kill him. Eventually, they meet.

John Ostrander: It’s always Halloween at the Con
Before I was a professional comic book writer, I was a fan. I still am. I was going to comic cons long before I turned pro. Some are good, some are not so good, and some are the San Diego Comic Con which is too large to fit into any category. For me these days, cons are mostly working weekends where I meet with fans and fellow pros, sign some autographs, maybe sell a few of my trade paperbacks.

Last weekend, I and My Mary were at the Motor City Comic Con in Novi, Michigan, and we had a great time. It’s close enough to where we live so that we could just drive there and the Con gave us a hotel room so we didn’t have to drive back and forth. The cats weren’t pleased that we were gone but they survived and, once we fed them,...

Suicide Squad is scheduled for release on August 5, 2016.

What we've seen so far

The movie has attracted a lot of attention as images of the Suicide Squad's members in costume began to roll out.

Leto showed off his new muscles, which everyone seemed to be fine with.

What fans have been less keen on is the photo of his tattooed and be-grilled Joker.

Despite suggestions that this was a concept that wouldn't show up in the film itself, shots from the set have dashed these hopes to pieces.

'Suicide Squad': Will Smith Promises Best Deadshot Ever
Will Smith at an event for Seven Pounds (2008)
With just over one week left until Focus hits theaters, stars Will Smith and Margot Robbie are continuing their press tour, where they have revealed new details about their next collaboration, playing Deadshot and Harley Quinn together in the Warner Bros.' superhero adaptation Suicide Squad. Production is slated to begin this April in Toronto, and while many fans are familiar with The Joker (Jared Leto), others may not be as familiar with Deadshot, who was featured in the CW series Arrow last season. Will Smith revealed he looks forward to creating "the global definition" of the DC Comics character Deadshot, promising fans the best version of the character in history (we're sure Michael Rowe, who does a fine job of playing Deadshot on The CW's Arrow, will be happy to hear this):

"With this character and the DC world, I love that I'm getting the opportunity for the global definition of Deadshot.

Arrow's 'Deadshot' Talks Suicide Squad Movie, Crossover With The Flash, And More
The small screen success of the Suicide Squad in Arrow has been credited in part with Warner Bros.' decision to move ahead with a movie featuring the villainous team. Fury helmer David Ayer is directing, and the cast includes names like Will Smith, Jared Leto, and Margot Robbie. Talking to ComicBook.com recently, Michael Rowe (who plays Deadshot on the small screen) had this to say about hearing the news that a movie was in the works. "I’ve grown quite attached to it, the character and the squad. So for Will Smith to takeover Deadshot, it’s gonna be fun, man, because he’s gonna take the squad, and all the A-lsit stars, are gonna make the squad into a household name and give it the respect that it’s due, so that makes me really happy." The disadvantages of a movie though? "I guess if you do look at it,...

Warner Bros. and DC are mining quite a bit of material from the Suicide Squad comics. Not only has this team of super villains been featured in previous episodes of The CW's Arrow, director David Ayer is getting ready to bring them to the big screen in a feature film. Of course, the TV and movie casts are both quite a bit different. In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, actor Michael Rowe, who plays Deadshot on the show, had quite a bit to say about his film counterpart Will Smith, and the possibility of a Suicide Squad spinoff series.

Last month, it was revealed that The CW is planning to create more spinoff shows from Arrow, especially with The Flash being so popular. Brandon Routh's Atom was mentioned as a good candidate. And there was even mention of a Suicide Squad series in the recent past, but that...

Suicide Squad To Return In Arrow
While Fury director David Ayer is currently hard at work on bringing the Suicide Squad to the big screen, comic book fans can see another version of the villainous team on TV in Arrow.

Et Online have revealed that they will return to the popular series in episode seventeen, appropriately titled “Suicidal Tendencies”. Unfortunately, Michael Jai White won’t be back as Bronze Tiger, but Michael Rowe Will be back as Deadshot (the character Will Smith is set to play in the 2016 movie).

A new addition to the team is Amy Gumenick as Cupid, a character we met a little earlier in season three. She has a serious thing for The Arrow, so seeing them potentially interact once again promises to be very interesting indeed!

Those are the only members confirmed to appear as of right now, but expect more to follow as two villains don’t make much of a squad!
